Came in for Brunch and it was a mistake. Got the eggs Benedict with a side of home fries. Firstly the eggs Benedict was bland and very salty, terrible hollandaise sauce didn't have flavor at all. The English muffin tasted like great value brand you get at Walmart. Secondly the home fries tasted like fried salt. They were crispy yet chewy which is a strange combo. Lastly it was overpriced for the quality, I can get a better breakfast at Village Inn and pay 1/2 the price. I still can't get the salt taste out of my mouth, puke! read more

This place is just a little too hipster for me. The food was good, but way to expensive for what it was. I just felt that for the price it was severely lacking. We've been meaning to make it down to Communal for ages, and we finally did. It was worth the effort! We ordered the london broil, the trout, the brussels sprouts and the fingerling potatoes. I could have ordered a few more things that looked good, but as Communal plates are designed for sharing, it would have been way too much food! It was all excellent! I also really love a good non-alcoholic drink, and their housemade ginger ale was fantastic. My only complaint is that it's a small restaurant, so tables are closer to the door than I would like, but it was fine. I didn't feel overly cramped. Overall, I highly recommend Communal. read more

Not sure how I missed reviewing this place. The food here is just art, it's is a marriage of classic beloved comforts and unique flavorful pairings. Made a reservation for a Friday night (off of yelp I may add) and was seated promptly on arrival. The atmosphere is fun for down town Provo with the constant movement of the chefs preparing fine delicacies in plain view. Our server new the menu extremely well giving us specifics on every item we inquired. My wife and I split the arugula beet salad, crusted halibut, and mushroom risotto. I have been here twice and have been pretty disappointed. I ordered the steak and asked for medium-rare and it was burnt and they gave me another and it was still scorched. The waitress was very slow and forgot about us a couple times. Maybe the two times I went there they were just off. The place is pretty cool looking, I will give them that. read more

Like a lot of people, I love Communal. I've eaten every meal of the day there at least once, and never had anything bad. Sure, some food was better than others (gnocchi=amazing, french toast=merely good). And sure, it's not cheap. But everything about it is unique -- the environment, the ingredients, the philosophy behind the cooking. Some people seem to want Communal to be more like a chain (bigger portions, smaller prices), or conversely to go head to head with fancy restaurants in major metro centers. But I think Communal is doing a great job at what it is. Also, the service has always been superb in my experience. read more

Now while it is Provo, Communal is a great spot regardless of its geographical location. The menu is always changing and boasts a vibrant appeal that offers a fresh breath of air for such a culinary wasteland. I will say, however, that Communal can be inconsistent and that the front desk does not utilize seating as effectively as they could--many times there are empty tables or parties of two sitting at a pour person table and they turn people away, including a part of my own one time. Stopped here on a drive from Park City on the way to Capital Reef National Park. The font and the feel of the place made us turn around and check it out. So happy we did! First, let me say that my fiancé and I are total food snobs and live in Austin, TX where the food is consistently out of this world good. From the get-go, one look at this menu gave us the impression we were going to be satisfied with our choice to stop. We shared the cheeseboard, then she had Fried Chicken sandwich (with OMG bacon aioli) and I had the salmon Caesar. Both were incredible and thank god she let me finish her's b/c she was full. Not too full to not order the Butterscotch Pudding dessert served in a Mason Jar. I'm strictly a no-sugar guy, but she insisted that this was worth breaking the diet for. Holy mother she was right. I cleaned the jar out. We were so impressed that on our drive back north 2 days later, we ate her again during a Saturday for brunch. The wait was 45 mins for 2 people (make reservations), but the hostess was so sweet that she got us some tea while we were waiting (we had the alimentary Dear Watson tea from a local Grey Mountain Herbs tea company and went looking for the place to buy more after brunch-that good). And then sat us at the bar after not more than 15 mins. The head chef, Wayne, saw us and decided to take care of us himself and made our food right in front of us in about 5 mins. He is super cool and loved our "oohs and aaahs" watching all the other patrons food come out. We could have sat there salivating all day! This time girl had the Pine Breakfast (which is basically a sampler of biscuit, gravy, chicken, bacon, eggs, and cheesy awesomeness. I had the salmon Caesar again (original, I know), and then Wayne went and made us special a Butterscotch pudding b/c he heard us talking about it. (It's not on their brunch menu). Hands down two of the best dining experiences we've ever had. We only wish we had this place in Austin. But that it's in Provo, UT makes it even cooler. Thanks Wayne and everybody at Communal. Really enjoyed my dinner at Communal. That being said, we had a weird encounter when we first walked in the restaurant. I had made a reservation literally weeks before for a party of 3 on OpenTable (link on their website.) When we got there, they said that they were overbooked that night and online reservations were going to be seated at the bar....even though there was a room full of empty tables when we got there. I spoke to 2 different people explaining my confusion and asked if there wasn't another table we could be seated at (there were no backs to the bar stools, and we wanted to comfortably face each other so that we could talk during the meal). They said no, but that the bar was great. Finally, someone else came over and said they had "found" a spot for us in the main dining area. So weird... But once we were seated, it was great service, and great food. I know the menu changes, but here were our favorites: Bests: Compressed watermelon salad Squash tart Short ribs Good: Polenta Macaroni and cheese Left something to be desired: Salmon Total after tip came to about $120 for 3 people. read more

Waited 45 minutes past the time of our reservation. I have dined here several times before and it seems to have gone downhill. None of our appetizers or entrees were good. The pea shoot salad tasted like field grass. The bison short ribs were over cooked, gristly and dry. The steak was undercooked even after we sent it back to be cooked more. The cod was just fair. What the heck?! One of the best, hippest restaurants with the most appealing menus we've been to, and we found it in Provo? Last thing were expecting and such a happy surprise. Venison was perfectly done. All the veggie sides were seasonal and perfect. Chicken hearts? Amazing. Chocolate mousse reportedly mind-blowing. Friendly service, great atmosphere. Great date spot. Our party of six was seated in a cool, private room with a great vibe. Dimly lit with rice paper on the walls, adorned with local art, this is a cool space. Meals are meant to be shared, but good luck with that as each dish is so good you may want to pull your selfish card out... Soup tonite was pork and wild rice. Nice, fatty (but delish) pieces of piggy combined with mild brown rice in a wonderful broth. The farrow salad was served cold and so good we re-ordered more for the table. I loved the cripsy brussel sprout leaves scattered over the top. You won't be disappointed. Everything here is organic, no hormones, etc, and it tastes it. Simple dishes like the roasted chicken tastes like it should, like chicken, simply prepared and oh-so-tasty. My short ribs brought a bowl of redux, a couple of carrots and a slab of tender, juicy, meaty goodness. The salmon was perfectly prepared. Everything is ala carte so we ordered lots of sides. The brussel sprouts with almonds and apple was sweet, toasty and perfectly prepared. I am going to try to replicate this dish at home. Spaghetti squash was enjoyed by my dining partners but was perhaps my least favorite side. Mac n cheese, well, it's homemade, high calorie decadence. Iced tea was a little too foo-foo for me, or else the taste was just a bit off. I prefer crisp, straight forward tea, and Communal's preparation didn't work for me. Friends raved about the excellent specialty beer selection, and one raved about the cool hot tea ordered with dessert. The small tea pot is brought to the table, and my fellow diner secretly admitted that it was something she'd love, love, love to have in her home! In downtown Provo this is hands down the best restaurant. We stayed in Provo for 10 days and had dinner here once and lunch twice. Space is small so would definitely recommend reservations for dinner. There are a few of private tables as well as communal seating (hence the name), affording a great opportunity to interact with other diners. For dinner, we had their mushroom soup special and a pheasant ravioli special, both of which were superb. Their ginger ale is made on the premises and is a must-try. Nice beer selection, try Old Rasputin if you like stout. For lunch, recommend the po-boy sandwich. Only one desert is served at lunch -butterscotch pudding- and it is Communal's longest served dish. It is easy to understand why! Do come hungry, Communal will not disappoint! read more

Love to see a unique spot in the Great Land of Chains, and they've got the right idea. Problem was, food just wasn't that great. Sure, the decor, the menus and the vibe were all true to foodie form, but the barbecue chicken leg/thigh I had, along with the pork belly salad, just really didn't do much for me. Pretty sure I could've whipped up the same at home in about 15 minutes--and for much cheaper. My wife and I stopped in to try Communal after having it on my list of places to try for quite awhile. We ordered an appetizer (carpaccio), a main course (blue cheese/mushroom rib eye), and a side (hush puppies) and it was more than enough to share between us. Everything tasted great. The only thing I would have opted for was a quieter environment, but that isn't really what they are going for in their entire approach to the restaurant so I can't fault them for that. It is a bit pricey -- not a place I'm going to eat at frequently, only special occasions. I think for the two of us with no drinks was about $65. Two last things; 1. the parking stinks. The jewelry store next door has about 20 parking spots with tow signs but you can park in their spots after 6pm. 2. They were full on a Wednesday night and so reservations would be recommended. read more

Dinner at Communal was an unexpected pleasure. Our waiter, Andrew, was friendly and extremely knowledgable. The Farrow/Kale Salad was bursting with flavor. The pièce de résistance was the pork belly, which is a five star/five diamond dish. Finished the meal off with Coconut Pie and Charming Beard French-pressed coffee. The ambiance is marvelous. What a great spot for dinner with family and/or friends! Food is family style which I like because it seems when food is served to share the meal becomes a conversation starter! The food was served timely and we all left very satisfied. We ordered the lamb, steak and salmon - all were delicious, but I surprised myself for choosing the salmon as my #1 (I'm a huge lamb fan). I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu, and if you do it's likely someone else in your crew will love it...everyone wins! :) I look forward to trying more things on their menu my next trip to Utah. read more

It's a nice change to the usual food as they are much more creative in their preparations.
