Waited 45 minutes past the time of our reservation. I have dined here several times before and it seems to have gone downhill. None of our appetizers or entrees were good. The pea shoot salad tasted like field grass. The bison short ribs were over cooked, gristly and dry. The steak was undercooked even after we sent it back to be cooked more. The cod was just fair. This restaurant could be delicious but their downfall is lack of creativity and salt. The first time I came here I was hoping for excellence but found nothing more creative than au gratin potatoes. My husband and I ordered a salad to start that was big enough to share but the description said it had goat cheese and asparagus spears. There were three 1/2 inch asparagus tips and a teaspoon dollop of goat cheese on top. So the toppings were quite disappointing. My husband's pork was great but my flap steak was charred on the outside and chewy on the inside with a bernaise sauce that was very heavy. The sides are extra and a la carte so we ordered sauteed vegetables and potatoes au gratin. The vegetables were very deicious but the potatoes were standard, nothing special. I wanted to give it a second chance so I attended a cooking class with a meal following. While I enjoyed watching the chef prepare the meal, my mother-in-law and I both agreed everything was very oversalted. The cauliflower soup, the quinoa, roasted root vegetables and the roasted chicken pan sauce were very salty and nothing creative. After two disappointing experiences I won't be returning. read more

WOW! Date night and I found Communal thanks to yelp. Romantic little place w very friendly staff. Lee was our waiter, and everything he recommended was spot on: carmalized mushrooms fennel tart, porkbelly, sweet potato grautin and date bread w caramel type spice sauce (to DIE for). Good. Not great. Some dishes tended toward precious. They don't quite deserve their price point. Inconsistent quality. Decent flavors. They are obviously trying, but while one piece of pork was nice, the other was dry and tough, on the same plate. Trout was tasty but too small to satisfy. Short ribs were the highlight. And the farro salad was good. Would have been better as a side. Beet salad was a bit of a mess. If we return, we will not listen to our server and will focus on entrees. Splitting three among five people meant only a spoonful or two per person. My wife's favorite thing about Communal is the cool reclaimed wood floor. Even if the bar is low in Provo, you can do better. Parents of university kids need better choices when we come to visit our youngins. read more

What the heck?! One of the best, hippest restaurants with the most appealing menus we've been to, and we found it in Provo? Last thing were expecting and such a happy surprise. Two words: "bacon steak!" They call it their 'Berkshire Pork," but let's be honest...it's a bacon steak and it's almost worth killing for (probably not dying for, but close). Things are a little cramped, and if you sit close to the door when it's cold out, you may get a breeze every now and again. The food here is absurdly fresh, as it is farmed and raised locally. Even the beer and wine selections are fairly regional. Having been several times, there's not a thing on the menu I didn't feel was absolutely delicious. It is served family style, so go with a mind to share (it's in the name!). The atmosphere is very different for the area. There just aren't many places like this around, which is why I find it so appealing. I've been eager to try Communal for some time now, being a Provo native I love to see restaurants pop up in my down town. My wife and I finally got around to eating at Communal for lunch today. It was nice when we sat down, it's clean and pretty and the menu is simple even for a first timer like myself. The prices are very high for a lunch time sandwich of it's proportion and the fries are six dollars extra!!! The presentation of the served meal was quite attractive... except for the large piece of plastic hanging out of my sandwich. I showed the waitress and she told me it was just a piece of wrapper or something... okay... I tried to continue, my first bite was good, but the second came with another long string of plastic. At this point my appetite was done, I sat the sandwich down and picked at the six dollars french fries, which had just arrived at the table. The waitress offered me another sandwich but I did not have time as I was on a lunch break. She offered again, I did not want the sandwich but told her I would take one to go... to end the conversation and get out of that place. She brought back the sandwich and the check, the biggest surprise of the day was that they had charged me for my meal... isn't that a no brainer? Apparently not, it appears as though it was my privilege to have even been served in such a fine dining establishment. Very disappointed, wont be back, can't recommend... unless I want to play a mean prank on someone. read more

In downtown Provo this is hands down the best restaurant. We stayed in Provo for 10 days and had dinner here once and lunch twice. Space is small so would definitely recommend reservations for dinner. There are a few of private tables as well as communal seating (hence the name), affording a great opportunity to interact with other diners. For dinner, we had their mushroom soup special and a pheasant ravioli special, both of which were superb. Their ginger ale is made on the premises and is a must-try. Nice beer selection, try Old Rasputin if you like stout. For lunch, recommend the po-boy sandwich. Only one desert is served at lunch -butterscotch pudding- and it is Communal's longest served dish. But the salad was over dressed and the blood oranges should have been sectioned instead of sliced (the membrane was like chewing leather). The Brussel sprouts were tasty but too oily. Our family has visited Communal almost since it's inception. However, last week, with a group of 9, we had such a poor experience. The food was, for the first time ever, less than appetizing. One of the courses we ordered was their duck - nearly raw and at $38 a plate, it was wasted. All of the other courses were so under the bar that we are used to at Communal - so much so, that certain family members who had been a fan in the past said they would never go back. We spent well over $300 on dinner and left very disappointed. I hope this only a one time event of poor quality food because we used to love, love this place and the food. read more
