Upon arriving, one of the servers(?) asked me very rudely if I had reservations, as if she was looking forward to turning us away if we didn't. No greeting or welcome, just demanding if we had reservations. When I told her we did she pointed us to a table uncomfortably close to another couple. There were only a handful of other diners there, so I asked if we could sit by the window. Seeming even more annoyed, she said that was for someone coming in with a reservation. I pointed out that I had a reservation, and there were multiple tables near a window. She muttered a few more excuses before finally saying "fine," and pointing to one. We sat, and eventually someone brought us water, but didn't ask if we wanted anything else to drink, or to tell us someone would be with us- nothing. We sat for 8-10 minutes and watched them go to other tables and talk between themselves, but no one ever approached us. I still have no idea what we did to be treated like that. We were dressed up nicely, we were polite, we were on time for our reservation... but we were treated so poorly and felt so unwelcome and mistreated I called Black Sheep across the street for their wait time, and we walked out and took our business there. Black Sheep seated us promptly and kindly, had fantastic food and dessert and even more importantly, service that CARED. Communal could learn a thing or two from them. Communal gives off a very cozy and relaxed vibe, I enjoy getting dinner after a long day at work. Food is generally quality. For some reasons the winter menu wasn't as good the night we went. On the winter menu we ordered the goat cheese walnut citrus salad, flank steak, mashed potatoes and pork belly. Pork belly was cook to perfection with a perfect amount of fat and meat with apples and apple butter on the side. The salad and the mashed potatoes didn't stand out. Tasted like regular salad and mashed potatoes that anyone could make. steak was a little chewy and bland for a $30 steak. I had only had communal for breakfast and hadn't been in years but we ordered their food to-go during the covid outbreak. Oh my gosh it was so good. We got the beef stroganoff, roasted brussel sprouts, the beet salad, and their butterscotch pudding - I was raving over all of it. We ordered their dinner for two package which was $35 dollars (plus $5 for the dessert) and I honestly felt like it was a very reasonable price for delicious, filling, hot food. The only negative is that when we ordered through grub hub it showed a different menu item and we were surprised to get stroganoff. Luckily we liked it so much that it wasn't a problem at all. This place was simply incredible. To start, the atmosphere was so inviting and classy with the lower lighting and original artwork everywhere - loved it! Service was good nothing too special, but the FOOD... wow. You definitely have to share with someone though. So first, you get complimentary warm house rolls with delicious salted butter, then we ordered our starter, the Spiced Pear salad. If I could give 10 stars for this salad I would. The dressing, the cinnamon on the warm pear wedges, the pomagranate and almond crunch, and bitter notes of feta altogether created a salad I will be dreaming about for weeks. Now the protein - we ordered the Chicken & Dumplings. Loved it! Chicken was seasoned and cooked to perfection, the dumplings were doughy and delicious, and the sauce was buttery and perfect to dip each bite in. Our starch was the Barley Parsley Risotto. My first few bites were amazing! The mushrooms in it were so yummy. The more I ate it I decided I wouldn't get it against just because it was super heavy and creamy to go with the food we already had. Would recommend though if you're craving a good risotto. Our vegetable was the Maple Glazed Squash. Simply incredible. It was sweet with hints of salty melted butter on top, with a some cream-like paste underneath. It was amaaaazing! Overall, 10/10. A visit to Communal was pending for a long time, especially after reading the review of friedn Yelpette Siobhain. It was truly amazing, from the atmosphere, to the super attentive and professional service, to the food. I liked the quality of utensils, real towels in the bathrooms and good quality napkins at the table, and of course rotating art in the walls. All these details matter and create ambiance, and this was really good for us. We shared some dishes and every single of them was excellent. The broccolini so tender and flavorful, the salad so fresh, the meat fabulous with a sauce that tastes a bit like chumichurri but has different ingredients (waiter explained everything). Seeing the open kitchen, everything so clean, fresh and that sense of small bistro where everything seems so personalized is guarantee of success for this restaurant. I love Provo's vibe so much and Communal alone makes this town worth the visit. Can't wait to go back. read more

One of the best dinners I have had in a long time. This restaurant was super accommodating to our party of six when we had reservations for 9pm but showed up at 9:50pm! We were in town for business and didn't expect to take so long getting off our flights and into a rental car. We chose two items from each category- I didn't take any pictures as we all dug in immediately. We shared 'Chili watermelon', 'beet salad', and the funeral potato croquette (the best!!). Then onto the ginger chicken and mushroom pasta (to die for) with cauliflower, broccolini, Lima beans, mashed potatoes, polenta cakes, and risotto! All was so amazing! The environment inside is quite cozy, but it's a double edged sword in my opinion, as you're sandwiched in pretty close depending on where you're seated. Brunch server wasn't very friendly but did make sure we had everything we needed. Did like the cornbread stuffing and bread served at the beginning of dinner. Hanger steak was very tough and chewy. It's certainly on the pricier side but their upscale atmosphere and quality service makes Communal the perfect date night for someone special. It's proximity to downtown Provo also makes it part of the growing local scene as its close to many boutiques and dessert spots. They had a variety of meat and vegan options and everything was well-plated. Foodie heaven! The seared pork belly had a delicious flavor, the braised short rib was super tender and the roasted chicken was just clean but flavorful! I loved everything about it! I don't think theres a single restaurant in utah that can beat the saturday brunch menu here. It was SO GOOD. We had the beignets and potato/churrizo breakfast tacos + a side of the house fries. Everything was SO GOOD. The beignets are super soft and pillow-y and come with house-made honey butter. I ate like half the plate before the rest of the food ever came out. The breakfast tacos were straight NUTS man like there were so many flavors i almost cried. And the coleslaw they add on top just topped it off with some great acidity to the really rich potato flavors. The staff were all super nice and its cool that you get to see the kitchen from right where you're sitting. The vibe overall is super nice and relaxed and you have a great view of DT provo. My husband and I reserved their small room for our wedding. It was so wonderful having the space to ourselves. It was a nice small intimate dinner with our closest family. The staff were super friendly and accommodating. They were super patient and willing to work with the 11 of us. Everything was super clean & the staff were all wearing masks. The food was amazing. Everything is shareable. Everyone was happy with what they ordered and there wasn't a single complaint among all of us. We got two charcuterie boards to share with everyone- the cheeses were out of this world and the meats were awesome. The braised pork belly was to die for. I think I could eat it everyday for the rest of my life and not get tired of it. It just melts in your mouth and it's so juicy and tender. The hanger steak was also super yummy, along with the polenta, and the broccolini. With the steak, we ordered it as Medium and it was still mostly pink/red in the middle. I normally get my steaks rare of medium-rare but I'm pregnant and didn't feel like risking it (even though I'm sure I would've been fine). My in-laws got their steak well done and it was also still a bit pink and they really enjoyed it. Overall we had an amazing experience. We will definitely be back soon.
