As my typical behavior, I arrived early for a private party at, The ART Bar upstairs in the Penthouse at the Angad Arts Hotel. I arrived early on purpose so I could check-out the bar in, Commonwealth. When I arrived between 5 and 5:30 PM, there were a scattering of filled tables in the dining room and only two guest seated at the bar. So it was real easy for me to take a stool at the very contemporary bar. After taking my seat, the bartender quickly greeted me and said she'd be with me shortly. I could see she was busy mixing and shaking other customers cocktails, so I waited patiently. When she approached me, she came with a tall glass of water, menus for both food and adult beverages. Once I saw the Vanilla Old Fashioned on the cocktail menu, I knew what I wanted. One of my favorite classic cocktails is an Old Fashioned and vanilla is my favorite flavoring. So combining both of them had to be a winner and it was. The cocktail was strong, but with the taste of vanilla it went down smoothly. I dad to pace myself, I was tempted to chug it and enjoy it in one big gulp. I told the bartender I was not dining, that I just stopped by before going upstairs to the private party. She was still attentive and followed up with while I sipped my cocktail. While I sat there, I enjoyed being entertained by her skills making other cocktails. Only detail that was missed, was placing a cocktail napkin under my drink. I am old school and like that presentation and protection from the moisture. As I watched her, she did napkins for others, she just missed mine. Reading the food menu was very tempting and seeing the food being served around me, it all looked very good. As I was leaving to attend my party, the bar had filled up and so had the other tables in the dining room. I'm pretty sure I'll be back for the full experience, very soon. read more

My husband and I have had breakfast at Commonwealth several times and have always enjoyed it, which made today's experience especially disappointing. After being seated, we waited about 20 minutes without a server acknowledging our table. The restaurant was not busy, and only after we flagged down the manager did someone come over to assist us. I ordered a latte and we placed our food order. The food arrived well before the latte, and when the latte finally came, it was barely warm. The cinnamon roll was served cold, as though it had been taken straight from a box with icing added on top. In the past, the quiche was served with bread. When I asked for a croissant, I was told they no longer offer them, so I ordered an English muffin instead. When the check arrived, I noticed a $6 charge for bread. The server explained that the charge was listed on the menu, but this was not clearly communicated when I placed the order. It is disappointing to see such a decline in service. When the upstairs dining area was open, the food was consistently excellent, the service was prompt, and the staff was welcoming. Based on this experience, I would not recommend breakfast here unless you have plenty of time and a great deal of patience. read more

Ended up at Common Wealth on a Saturday night before the symphony because Art Bar was closed for a ticketed event. The menu was pretty small compared to what was offered on the rooftop. I ended up getting the truffle fries and vanilla espresso martini. The French fries were definitely on the smaller side to be considered a dish to share. A little pricy and I would recommend having reservations we got lucky that a table opened up when we got there. read more

Had a reservation here for 3 friends, to have a meal before a show at the Fox. The cocktails were DELICIOUS and the food was good. There wasn't so much food that we needed to take any home with us. The atmosphere was nice. We shared the Spinach Artichoke Dip and it was tasty. I ordered the Pan Seared Red Snapper which was GREAT, though the couscous was rather lacking in flavor. When we went to pay, we were told they were short on bills and might get only $1 bills in return. It took a long time to get the bill paying taken care of, and we were the LAST ones out of the restaurant. We had given ourselves an hour and a half at the restaurant, and almost didn't make it into the show in time. That's pretty slow service overall. For the price, it was too slow IMO. read more

The space is casual with a light upscale vibe. We highly recommend the truffle fries. The aioli was probably the best I've had in a while. Creamy and herbaceous and a perfect compliment to the crisp fries! For entrees the shrimp and grits came highly recommended. There was a generous portion of creamy grits. The shrimp were perfectly cooked. The sauce had all the flavor notes necessary to qualify as true shrimp and grits. Planned this for a date night prior to heading to a night at the Symphony. The dining room is nicely decorated and located in the Angad Arts hotel, so the "cool factor" is pretty high! The service was top notch and our drinks were fantastic. We had the Cosmo and The Classic. A friend and I went to Commonwealth before a Fox show last night. We made reservations but probably not necessary for two people since we arrived pretty early! It is really cool looking and the bar looked fully stocked. We each started off with a drink, I got the Mezcal Sour, and my friend got the Violette Cosmo. Both were delicious and strong enough, which I love! The bread they gave us was really nice with soft butter. We got the spinach artichoke dip which was absolutely delicious, a bit rich and definitely more food than we needed. For dinner, we split a burger and fries. Burger was super messy but huge and tasted great! The fries and aioli were perfect. Our server was also very kind and enthusiastic. We will definitely be coming back to try more on the commonwealth menu! We split a salad, flatbread, and truffle fries (not pictured) and everything was good!! I would say these weren't their specialties, but we also didn't want to eat too much because we were going out to meet friends for drinks afterward, so that's saying something skewed our order. Overall, no notes on the salad or the fries. The flatbread could've used a bit more flavor, but it was still very good. The vibe is classy but not black tie or dressy. I had breakfast at Commonwealth last week when staying at Angad Arts Hotel for one night. The service from my waitress was excellent, and the food was great and fast! I wanted to try the Strata but it was out, so I went with my second choice, the English Fry Up. I had it with scrambled eggs, two sausage patties, two strips of bacon, and mushrooms and tomatoes. It was excellent! A very simple but well prepared, hearty breakfast which covered all the bases you need to get the day started right. The restaurant itself is beautiful and is "so St. Louis" in its architecture and updated art deco design. Ive had this place on my lists to try for quite some time. The ambiance of this place is perfect for a quaint dinner. They have an amazing menu and an even better cocktail menu. Since I'm expecting, I was very happy to see they had a NA section for a drink as well. We ordered the cheese plate as an appetizer and it was delicious! Met up with two friends who have been to Commonwealth before but this was new to me. It is a limited menu and yes, it is a bit on the spendy side but I've had a successful week in Saint Louis and I'm ready to celebrate. (Also, Commonwealth was our third choice after the first two reduced to a limited menu because of Hamilton at the Fox.) We were warmly greeted even though we did not have a reservation and they made a four top for us out of two neighboring twos. Our service was perfect. Madison took amazing care of our table, providing recommendations, telling us about the specials and later, describing the desserts. It is more than obvious that she is not only an experienced waitperson but she is confident with the food she is delivering and enthusiastic about this restaurant. She took this from a five star meal to well, a five star meal. She rocked it. Cheese plate to start with three different offering and a honey smear and some berries with toast points. The cheese was perfect. For main course, I chose the pheasant. Served with a beet sauce reduction and on top of two roasted half-onions, it was fantastically delicious. For dessert, I didn't have any (keto!) but the "Starry night" dark chocolate torte looked amazing as did the white chocolate cheesecake. Some regrets on my part. For our monthly ladies night dinner, we decided to make reservations at the Commonwealth. We made it for 6pm but when we arrived, there really wasn't a need for one as there wasn't anyone. It was a Tuesday night. Is it usually dead like this? Not sure. I came in through the main door of the hotel, I think? I was slightly lost and then the valet guy came in and told me the restaurant is a left turn at the end of the hall. Anyway, I made it and was seated with the rest of my party. So, drinks... I was sorely disappointed that their wine by the glass selection is quite thin. I wanted a Cabernet Sauvignon as usual and there's only one option and the same applies for other varietals as well (by the glass). Our waitress told us they have a bigger selection by the bottle but we don't all drink the same type of wine so that didn't really help us and I wasn't about to drink an entire bottle solo on a Tuesday night (or any night). For my appetizer, I ordered the cardamon and fennel seed pork belly. That was delicious, the highlight of the night if I am being honest! Tender and flavorful... I'm glad no one else wanted to have a bite of my appetizer. The other ladies shared the prawns (3 in a serving), the Camembert Brie, and the foie gras. I did have a bite of the foie gras and it was quite tasty as well. The cocoa nib crumble was a bit excessive but otherwise, I wouldn't say no to it if someone was offering. For my main dish, I ordered the Tandoori duck breast. Great, fantastic flavors on the duck but again, too heavy on the cocoa nibs. Some people might like it but I didn't particularly care for it all that much. I saved room for dessert as usual and got the starry night which is a chocolate torte, chocolate creme patisserie and blueberry compote. It was pretty good, beautifully done as far as presentation goes. So service was actually great. Our waitress checked on us occasionally to make sure we didn't go for too long needing something and she was able to answer questions that our party members have about the menu. There was some loud banging while we dined. Construction? I'm not sure but hopefully not at 7pm! Overall, I'm glad I tried this place. My Uber driver did ask me on my way home about the arts but... Went here last night for dinner with friends. The atmosphere was great and so was the service. Parking is not so easy due to being so close to the fox and the Powell, but we were able to find street parking. The food here was delicious, husband and I ordered the mussels for appetizer and he got the duck and I got the cast iron scallops. Friends got the prawns, rack of Lamb and the chicken tikka masala. We finished our meal with the starry night dessert. All of the food was flavorful and delicious. I don't usually order dessert, but it was well worth it! Reason for the 4 star reviews was the drinks. They were pretty high priced for what you get. They seemed watered down and lacked potency and for $15-$17, we had higher expectations. Chef McKinney and Melissa Taylor's first collaboration with Angad Arts Hotel/Commonwealth Restaurant knocked it out of the park! It's a really cool venue and I hope there will be more collaborations with Melissa and Chef in the future! It was also a good reminder we need to check out Commonwealth more often when we have evening events in the area. The 5 course meal was perfectly portioned to leave comfortably full, and the wine and cocktail pairings were exceptional. For future events, we will definitely be ordering different options between vegan and meat, wine and cocktail, for sharing. Our friends had the vegan option while we had the meat choice, and there were a few of their dishes I would have liked to try. On the other hand, I wouldn't have wanted to give up more than half of any of my courses, they were all so delicious! I forgot to take photos of several of the courses, but the risotto and broccoli were from the vegan option. All of the vegan dishes got huge compliments, but the risotto was resoundingly a favorite. The other 3 pics are from the meat option, and all were amazing! The lamb and pork belly were both melt in your mouth! Of the cocktails, the vanilla old fashioned and lavender spritzer were particular favorites. Last, the service was second to none. The servers were professional and attentive, but we also got a strong feeling of cameraderie amongst the entire crew. I loved that Melissa, Chef, and staff made the rounds for introductions and greetings as time allowed. Such a great energy. Don't let this place fool you! It is absolutely trash with servers who pretend not to notice it's trash!! We stayed at the Angad hotel and I had paid for breakfast during my booking so they gave us two tickets for breakfast when we checked in. We went down there and the menu was pretty small.. I decided to go with the avocado toast with a side of salmon and side of bacon. My wife ordered the biscuits and gravy and she seem to enjoy them, but my avocado toast was the worst I've ever seen.. first the description on it sound really appealing and maybe it's something more on the clean side so I gave it a try. They drizzled some type of vinaigrette all over it and just ruined it! I am not a fan of vinaigrette at all! But the fact that this wasn't listen on the menu in the description of the food was really disappointing. I tried to work around it and I'm doing so I realized that they had only put not even half an avocado on the toast.. and put the egg in the center rather than covering the whole "avocado" toast with avocado then placing the egg on top. Not only that but the egg was poached and it was supper wet! They didn't dry it after poaching it so when I went to pick up the toast it was so soggy.. so disappointing and I was so hungry already.. I picked up the bacon because eat this point I can't make this avocado toast work anymore.. and the bacon is so over cooked.. not even crunchy just over cooked that it breaks when I pick it up.. so I just ate the salmon.. so defeating.. When the server came by and asked if I wanted a Togo container I said absolutely not and she didn't bother to ask me what was wrong with it or offer my something else.. she just took it and left. When I walked in there was no one at the entrance. I waited while three people looked and me and kept on going. I had a 730 reservation so I didn't want to miss out on my time slot. I walked to a guy who was standing at a register to ask if I was standing at the correct entrance. He was nice and introduced himself as the hostess. He got my name and went to prepare my table while I waited for the three other ppl in my party. I think they may be short-staffed because the wait was long for pretty much every step from the waitress coming over, to ordering food and drinks, and getting entree. I think it would have been a better experience had we not come in after a rush. They were out of the menu items I wanted to try as well. The free glass of champagne and dessert is what saved the dinner for my group. I'd like to visit at a different time because I honestly believe it could be better. They were doing their best so it didn't seem like the service was intentionally poor or slow. If I'm going to have a 400 dollar bill, the service/experience has to make me not regret it. Instead, I feel like I should have gone somewhere else. They only gave us free champagne because it was my birthday and my mom's graduation. Limited menu, but focused on what the chef has been creating. Located within a hotel. If you come in a front door on Grand, then you enter right into the restaurant area. We came in on the side street, where the valet parking brings you, and there's no signage at all that we could see. Wandered around some until helpful hotel guests directed us to the restaurant. Some signage would be useful! I started with the honey jalapeno bisque. Warm and creamy, with a lingering but not overpowering heat. Pretty good really. Best way to describe it might be a thin melted ice cream with hot pepper sauce added, although it was much more appetizing in reality. My main course was the volcano pork shank. Volcano because the braising causes the pork to drop down and expose the shank bone. Extremely tender and moist pork. Quite a lot, too, so no complaint about a small portion. It came with polenta with candied brussels and and a blackberry reduction (there actually were blackberries in the polenta, too). The polenta was a good contrast with the pork, offsetting the richness of the meat. The wife ordered creamed beetroot soup. There was a choice of chilled or hot, and she got the hot. It too was quite good. The flavor was similar to a mild masala. Her entrée was trumpet "scallops", which was mushrooms prepared in the style of scallops. She had wanted to get the actual scallops entrée, but they didn't get delivered to the restaurant. She thought the flavor was okay, but not as good as actual scallops. It came with spaghetti squash and pea puree. The presentation was beautiful. The flavors for the squash and peas were bland. Dessert was the Starry Night (chocolate torte, chocolate crème patisserie, blueberry compote). It too was beautiful, and also delicious. But presented as for 1 to 2 people, when it to me was small enough that it really was only for one. And for $17, was ridiculously pricey. read more

The hotel/restaurant decor was warm, inviting and elegant. The hostess and waitress were super friendly. Our vanilla and wine Old Fashions were good. My smoked Gouda tomato soup was very tasty. It took quite a long time to get our entrees, but they arrived together at least. I had the Jamaican lamb chops, which were plenty (6 chops) and grilled to a nice medium that I asked for. However, there was absolutely no spice at all in the dish. The Caribbean salsa consisted of not sweet pineapple, red onion, and red and green bell peppers, but I did not taste any salt, lime, spice or herbs. The coconut rice was probably the worst rice I've ever been served. It was watery though not mushy (suspect someone last minute remembered and doused it with coconut water before plating) and bland though I did find a little coconut aroma. I'm not sure why the rice was beige in color. Thankfully, the soup, chops, and grilled asparagus were good and filling. My husband had the hamburger with herb truffle Parmesan fries which were delicious. Our waitress checked on us after the entrees were delivered, but we did not see her for a long time afterwards and had to go find her to get our check. I did enjoy my dinner even without the spice I anticipated, but I should remember to order food that the restaurant is geared towards (I believe is contemporary European at this place) or bring chili crunch in my purse. read more

One of the worst steaks I have ever had, not because it was cooked improperly, but the sauce is totally overpowering and without any complexity, ruining an otherwise good steak. My girlfriend's seafood ravioli was also disappointing, due to the flavorless sauce. My old fashioned also left much to be desired. This is not me being a snob. I almost never leave reviews, but people should be warned not to come here. The ambiance and service leave much to be desired, but that was the least of my concerns. this food is truly sub-par for an upscale price. There were only about 4 Diners in there when we came in but we decided to sit at bar anyway. The place filled up while we were there. We ordered Brie appetizer and then volcano pork shank for dinner. All of the food was great with the exception of the crostini that was stale. Brie was baked with cranberries in the crust. The pork shank gave us quite the laugh but it was SO good. Meat melted in your mouth. It is served with polenta. I could have definitely used more polenta in there. Yum. Price was a bit steep but the food was excellent. Their wines by the glass covered the basics and I loved my St Francis Chardonnay. The bartender was great. This place would do well to offer happy hour specials although I understand not offering them on nights there is a show at the Fox since those evenings are already quite busy. read more

Tonight was the grand opening of Commonwealth and I was excited to try the new restaurant in the Angad Arts hotel for dinner. The restaurant's menu is a modern take on European cuisine, influenced by international flavors. The space is beautiful, spacious, and the perfect ambiance for a special occasion or date night. My server Anthony was great. Pleasant, spoke well about the menu and did an adequate amount of table touches for a fine dining experience. The one thing he did not do was refill my water glass, but luckily I was at dessert when I noticed and was ending my meal. I started with 2 appetizers, the Camembert brie and the curried mussels. The brie was topped with fig jam and served in a baked puff pastry on a plate garnished with honey and Marcona almonds with a few crostini to finish the plate. It was really delicious! For me, it was a safe appetizer to get if you love baked Brie and it didn't disappoint. The other appetizer I ordered was a little more out of my comfort zone, the curried mussels. I love seafood and shellfish, but I normally don't go for mussel dishes because they are not very filling and can be a little messy to eat. But I know many people who love them, so I wanted to be able to offer some reflection of the dish. The mussels were amazing. If you love curry, you will enjoy the broth, which was prepared with coconut milk, lemongrass and curry and the dish was topped with a little fresh tomato. Served with crostini, you will love to use them to devour the flavorful broth that the mussels were served in. It was a great appetizer and I would highly recommend if you enjoy mussels. For my main entree, I once again stepped out of my comfort zone (and the comfort of my wallet!) and splurged in the veal ballotine, the favorite dish of my server Anthony. I had my eye on a few of the entrees and the veal was not one of them, but when asked for recommendations, my server quickly said the veal was his absolute favorite. He also mentioned he was not a fan of beef or mushrooms, and this dish had both, so I figured if someone who is not even a fan of beef or mushrooms could make this recommendation and speak so highly of the dish, it is a must try! And it did not disappoint! The veal was perfectly cooked, stuffed with mushroom duxelles and served on the most delicious mushroom cognac sauce, complimented with Peruvian purple potatoes and Swiss chard. I ate every bite. It was absolutely phenomenal! Finally my favorite course, dessert! I ended my meal with a recommendation once again from Anthony. His favorite was the white truffle cake and that was the dessert that was top of mind for me, so the white truffle cake it was! It was ok. Anthony said it was smooth, and had the consistency of a cheesecake. It was denser than a cheesecake and yes it was smooth, but it was a little too heavy and sweet for me. It definitely put you in the mind of a chocolate truffle but I didn't want a whole bar of that. If you love white chocolate this is definitely the dessert for you. I love white chocolate and actually prefer it over chocolate but even for me this dessert was heavy and a bit too much. I was focused too much on the cake part and was looking for something light and airy to finish my meal versus something heavy and dense. Overall my experience here was great and I was pleasantly surprised. I reviewed the menu extensively ever since it was publicly available online and nothing really jumped out at me as something I had to have and would seek out. But the perfectly crafted plates pleasantly surprised me and were all very delicious. This is not a price point that I can afford on a regular basis so for me, it is definitely a special occasion place. Even with its location so close to the fox theatre I will be interested to see how well this restaurant does long term, because the prices limits customer frequency for me. Since it is part of a hotel, the hotel guests may keep it busy. I hope the menu changes seasonally, since that might keep it fresh enough for me to at least try it every season. As for the trifecta it has it all- great service, great ambiance, great food, just be prepared to drop anywhere from $75-$100 per person especially if you are into cocktails. I'm not a drinker but they did have some cool cocktails but be prepared to pay Chicago/NYC/LA prices for them. read more

Be prepared to drop $200+ for the full experience! We started off with oysters for our appetizer. They still were offering their winter menu so I had the short ribs and my friend had the rack of lamb. We each ordered four cocktails and ended with a dessert. We went on a Tuesday so it was pretty empty. Wasn't much happening at the hotel either. Next time we will go up and look at the art! read more

Sam our bartender/waitress was amazingly friendly, attentive and great with recommendations. My spouse and I split the red pepper Gouda soup, spinach salad, and seafood ravioli, recommended by Sam. the chefs preparation and presentation were outstanding and the food delicious. We had the lemon raspberry cake for desert. the atmosphere was wonderful and relaxing for a pre Fox dinner. Food was amazing and service was equally amazing! We had tickets for a show at the Fox on a Saturday evening and planned accordingly and made reservations for 2 hrs in advance. If you leave a bad review because you showed up and expected to be served immediately on a show night without the foresight to plan ahead, save your negativity.
