went in for oil change, they ended up finding an issue with break fluid leak, told me it will cost $700 to fix the leak, of course i never take advice from just one mechanic, so i went to another mechanic to get it checked out and ended up being a $9 rubber seal to fix the leak. i wonder how many customers they lie to. shame on these people at comfort auto. read more

Let me first say that this is my first one star review. I usually give two stars, but this situation, I just can't get myself to add a second star for the amount of time and money I lost, and the situation I was put in. DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT A MECHANIC NOR DO I WORK FOR ANY OTHER MECHANIC. Therefore my knowledge of this stuff is little, most of what I say here I learned through this experience. My clutch was slipping as I had driven many miles on it, so I figured it was time to replace it before going down to mexico where I had work for a week. I had bought the clutch kit online brand new and brought it in. I also had a little bit of difficulty putting it in first / second gear. I called around and his prices seem to be the most reasonable (buyer beware). I brought my truck in the morning, and the following afternoon received a call saying my truck was ready. Maybe I can give him an extra star for that, but, it would have to be removed for what happened next. I drove down to mexico. On the way my clutch felt a bit jumpy, which is common when putting in a new clutch. I arrive to Ensenada (about an hour and a half south of the border) and the following day, it is nearly impossible to put it in gear. I call the show and he tells me that I should try pumping the clutch pedal several times and checking the clutch (brake) fluid. There are two containers for brake fluid, one was fine, the other was a bit low. So the next day I go buy some brake fluid and add it... that does not solve the problem. I called the mechanic again and he essentially told me I have to get it looked at because there could be a faulty part. (Meantime, I couldnt get to my gig and lost a nights worth of work / pay... im a musician, and my gigs are all that support me.) Because my truck can't get in gear, I have to get a tow truck to come take my truck to a local mechanic here in Ensenada (luckily labor is less expensive down here). $75 out the window for the tow truck. The mechanic down here tells me the part hadn't been installed properly, the flywheel hadn't been properly adjusted to the new clutch, the brake fluid hadn't been purged from the system, and many screws were left loose during the installation. They said that because of this, it caused damage to other parts of my transmission (master / slave cylinder), including the original clutch kit, and the transmission has to be taken out and many parts had to be replaced. I called Comfort Auto again, and he said "none of this is my fault". I do think it is a mechanic's job to make sure everything is properly installed and that the part works before returning the vehicle. I am pretty sure he did not test it well. And if while doing the job, you notice other parts that need to be replaced, I do believe for safety reasons, that it is your job to inform your customer. Which means either he failed to mention that they needed to be replaced, or, they did not need to be replaced until after the work he had done, due to poor installment of these parts and damage done to other parts. Luckily I speak enough Spanish and know enough people around here and didn't get stranded... On top of the $500+ I spent on this guy and the $89 I spent on the part that got ruined, I ended up having to purchase a new clutch kit (this damage doesn't fall under their warranty so I couldn't return it, another $89 bucks out the window), new slave / master cylinders (around $150), pay for new labor ($250 in mexico, $500+ in USA), pay for a tow truck $75 (a lot more expensive in US), and lose 2 days worth of work... (i wont disclose how much I earn per gig, but its not enough to make these expenses insignificant). As mentioned, I rarely leave reviews, but after calling him and giving him a chance to clarify / rectify the situation, and him just denying any sort of responsibility / accountability, I felt I needed to leave this review. Sorry if this affects their business negatively, but if I had known ahead of time, I would not have taken my car there, I would have paid an extra $50-$100 elsewhere to have it done right. read more

Dishonest mechanics! Hovick and Vic were only nice to get your business but they have really bad work ethics, not to mention did not fix the issue I brought my car for. They claim to know but did it incorrectly then get mad at me for complaining that it was not done properly. If a mechanic tells you they can do the job, you trust them. They are dishonest people for saying they can do it but install it wrong! They returned my money but did not remove the improperly installed part. You cannot trust them. They don't even have the professionalism to tell you they can't do the job. Go somewhere else. Don't waste your time with these people! read more

My friend has a older Lexus. He had car problems yesterday, and had to come to Comfort Auto because it was the closest auto repair shop in the area. My friend was a former part time mechanic in college, so he knows whether or not the labor fit the price. All in all, the work done at this auto repair shop was adequate and fair. read more

Super nice people and great service. I always come here for my smog checks and I'm in and out within 15 minutes, with no appointments made. The last time I had to get my smog done was during the pandemic so the DMV really slowed down the process. The DMV told me that they hadn't received any smog results, but I called Comfort Auto and they were able to find my smog results and take a picture and send them to me for proof within 5 minutes. Negatives: employees were not wearing masks as well as some people who appear to be friends or acquaintances. They did not sanitized my car after working on it for a smog check or at least used a disinfectant spray. Price was high. Other places nearby would have been cheaper had I known. They changed the discount from what was advertised in app or on web version of Yelp from $10 off any service to only $10 off only during weekends if appointment was made. Positives: They did social distance at times. Service was fast. I appreciated that. They quickly sent passed smog check to DMV department and California AAA. I would have given a more positive rating if they had honored the discount and wore at least face coverings during this pandemic. read more

I strongly suggest anyone reading this avoid this mechanic. Vic charged me almost $300 for a water pump replacement to fix a coolant leak. Problem: It never stopped leaking, and I'm sure he knew that when I left the lot (after all he is a mechanic). Of course, I didn't find out until all the coolant had leaked out and my car overheated on the freeway. (He is dishonest about prices-see photos). I went to three other mechanics and they each explained to me why the problem was probably never the water pump. They said at a superficial glance it appears to be the water pump, but after thorough examination, it's definitely the gasket. They also confirmed that any mechanic would have been able to tell that the coolant was still leaking when I picked up the car. I don't think he thoroughly checked before he worked on my car. Also, I found out that he paid $57 for the part and even though the list price was $73, he charged me $119 (see photos). I know mechanics jack up prices, but this is extreme. He also charged me $15 for coolant, which is a whole bottle's worth, even though he only filled up about 1 qt. When he was replacing the water pump, he tried to squeeze extra money out me to fix random things that weren't problematic. I didn't fall for it. He did, however, admit that they weren't essential to the function of the car. My gut told me there was something sketchy about him, but I didn't listen because it was nearby and I couldn't drive my car very far. I found another place to take it to, and I'll update with recommendations if everything goes well. read more

This place deserves 0 stars. I had a minor service on my 2009 Toyota Prius and a smog check. The smog check was fine, but the oil change was not done properly. The replaced oil filter was not properly inserted and the bolt on the oil pan was not screwed in tightly enough. My car was leaking massive amounts of oil when I drove it, but since it had been raining and this is an extra vehicle, I did not notice it right away. When I attempted to resolve the situation with Comfort Auto they refused to tow my vehicle back to their shop to fix their mistake. The owner even said that I probably did the damage to my vehicle. I decided not to bring my vehicle back there and took it to Bob Smith Toyota instead. I have always taken my vehicles to Bob Smith Toyota, but decided to try this place since I needed a smog check from a certified station. Boy was that a mistake! I will never go back to this place and will advise everyone I know to never take their vehicles there. They do shoddy work and then refuse to accept that they made a mistake and make it right. read more

Vic has consistently treated me fairly. He has given me safety inspections at no cost, and his recommendations are seemingly always honest and straightforward. For instance, on more than one occasion, when I was primed by car concerns (ie, check engine light and the like) to be ready to spend for a fix, he has told me not to do anything and instead monitor the situation. Those situations have often resolved themselves without expensive fixes. I use two different mechanics in the La Canada area -- mostly a function of different operating hours & locations, which gives me flexibility with drop-offs since I work in Pasadena -- and I am glad Vic/Comfort is one of the two. Comfort Auto saved my young children and I from a sweltering car on a 95+ summer afternoon! My GMC Acadia air conditioner broke and I refused to take a day (or 2!), and be overpriced by GMC dealership service dept...... we were suffering, so I drove to Jiffy Lube and their Freon machine was broken. I begged them to send me somewhere close-by and trustworthy. The worker pointed across the street to Comfort Auto. (It was 4:30pm when I drove in and asked Horvick to help me.) They had other cars they were busy with, yet they invited my young son and I to wait in the office with cold water & fans, while they quickly diagnosed my car, and added Freon. I was on the road 40 minutes later and it cost me a little over $100! The brothers Vick and Horvick gave our family outstanding service and I'll go there first from now on. Of course I waited till the last day to get my car smog checked and registered and just my luck, my usual smog place was closed for some reason and I had about an hour to get smog and hit AAA to get registered. I found Comfort Auto about a mile away from my AAA. I drove up there and they immediately got my car hooked up for the smog test with no waiting completed in and out in under 20 minutes. They even took my $10 off coupon which saved me a little dough! Comfort Auto's smog check was fast and efficient overall I would say this was a five-star experience.
