Beep beep. Sam's Auto Clinic and more specifically, Sam, to the rescue. My Audi hybrid was DOA and the battery was not accessible, as Audi thoughtfully disables the hatch so it can't be opened. Grrrr. Sam got it all unraveled in a matter of hours. He wasn't sure which battery was needed, so he ordered all of them, put in the right one, and returned the rest to his vendor. No upselling, and about half the price quoted by my service writer at the Audi dealer in Pasadena. Could it get any better? Yes. Sam's an awfully nice guy with a sense of humor and a busy shop. Left the car on Friday. Wouldn't give me a quote till Tuesday. He kept saying it's a vintage car and finding the part would be hard. Another auto shop already had a photo of the problem and stated they could fix for $70. This guy said that because it's vintage and hard to find part will likely be around $100 to $125. First red flag because the other auto shop guy said that part was common and in every auto zone. Felt like he was going to overbill me. So we called him couple times to find out estimate. He kept delaying. Asked him if he could let us know at least on Monday what the estimate would be. He yelled at us because we called him multiple times. I was just worried because times are hard and money is tight. So disappointed by him yelling that I took the car to the other auto shop. He threatened to charge us $100 bucks a day starting same day for storage. Never again. --- Response to owner Sam: First of all I don't care about your happiness. I am happy not to use your over charging services! You gave me couple hour notice to move my car but need multiple days just to give me price? Your threat with couple hour notice was so disrespectful and your yelling was so disrespectful that I filed a complaint with AAA. I have never felt such disrespect from an auto shop. Next time why don't u try to have an adult conversation. I called you after my husband called u first because he stated you yelled at him too. By the way you wanted 2 work days to do an estimate. Including weekend that's 4 days of my car sitting at your shop without a price. You want to get technical? You had three hours on Friday and wanted until Tuesday to give me an estimate on a simple fix. You were not even busy on Friday when we arrived. Was on the 210 and my car started to jerk and decelerate. Glanced at the temp gage, it was all the way up to hot! To avoid causing an accident, I hit the emergency lights and made my way off the freeway. Found a safe spot to park and Googled the nearest mechanic. The first hit was Sam's Auto Clinic. I set the GPS and was on my way. The gage was still on hot but was not jerking as much. Was relieved when I pulled into the driveway. Parked and entered the office to the shop. Was greeted by Sam. Took my car to Sam's to get my windshield wipers fixed. They were not working at all. He kept the car for 2 days. He said I needed the wiper motor and relay. He charged me $65 for a system inspection, $450 for labor, $320 for parts for a total of $935. That seemed very high. Past experience with mechanics has been if they diagnosis the problem and you have them fix it there is no charge for the diagnosis. The first time I used the wipers in the rain the right hand wiper kept banging the hood real hard. The wipers were brand new Bosch wipers. The next time I had to use the wipers they wiped for about 10 passes then stopped in the middle of the windshield. I had to turn the engine off to reset the wipers. I was not real confident that Sam knew what he was doing since he did not seem to check the system before letting me take the car home. I took the car to another mechanic and he replaced the relay a second time. Although Sam's Auto Clinic is close to where I live I will not use him again or recommend him to friends or family. read more

CAVEAT EMPTOR I took my Toyota Corolla here b/c it wasn't idling smoothly. I asked Sam if he could adjust it. He said to leave the car there and he'd see what he could do. I also asked him to check the brakes. When I came back, he said the idle couldn't be adjusted. He said he had it on a machine for a long time, and charged me $100! He said there was only about 10% left on the brakes, so better bring it in soon for replacements. I paid the bill, but I suspected I had been had. Later, I took the car to the Union 76, at Foothill Blvd, in La Canada for a couple of new tires, and I said I might need new brakes. When I came back the mechanic told me there was at least 70% still there and I wouldn't need brakes for a long time. So, I told him what Sam said, and about paying $100 to find out he couldn't adjust the idle. He said every mechanic knows that carburetor can't be adjusted b/c its computer controlled. Save UR dough! My friend who had an old beater car recommended that I go to Sam when I had my old beater car. Why? I needed an honest mechanic who could help me prioritize what to fix when I might be told by a random mechanic to fix everything. It's not economically smart to fix everything on an old car when the repairs might cost you more than the Blue Book value! Sam was great to help me prioritize and plan ahead on my list of repairs for my 2001 Nissan that I bought from a friend at 130K miles. Yes, my poor car was worked too hard and I needed to keep her in shape so I could get around town. He was my emergency hotline when I panicked from various things. Dumb things like I didn't know how to turn off my car alarm when it got accidentally triggered. Then a near-heart-attack when my alternator failed me in San Diego and I couldn't breathe from the smoke--whether the random mechanic I had to see for the fix (out-of-town) was charging me a fair price, Sam could give me confidence that I was doing the right thing.
