My girlfriend and I have been on a bit of a Mexican food kick as of late, and in particular she has discovered a love of mezcal, the smokier cousin of tequila. She wanted to drink some mezcal this weekend, so I started Googling things like "best mezcal bar NYC". There were some options in Manhattan, but none of them particularly compelling. Lo and behold, Colonia Verde had a selection of mezcal, including a flight option, and was just a fifteen minute walk away from my apartment in Fort Greene. Reservation made. We wandered over and found a cozy space with a bar on the right, and tables on the left. I didn't see quite how far it went back, but every table was packed and an open kitchen was in my line of sight. A quintessential Brooklyn restaurant. Having come for mezcal, that was the first order of business. In addition to a couple of cocktails (both fantastic), we ordered the mezcal flight offered to get a taste of some more types of mezcal. The pours are an ounce, which was perfectly fine to share between two people (remember, it is a sipping liquor, not a shooting liquor). The variety was quite interesting and my girlfriend was quite happy to try three different types. The menu invites sharing, with the For the Table option having several appealing options. The entire menu can be shared as far as I can tell, and that is what we did. As if by magic, once we had finished our mezcal flight, our first course came out: crispy pork belly and the shrimp aguachile. The crispy pork belly was an immediate standout, I may have even squealed with delight. The pork was crispy, and the salsa verde delightfully fresh and acidic. The shrimp aguachile was a lovely pairing as well, also bright and acidic. One very small piece of criticism: giving three tortillas to two people is just cruel. We managed to split the last tortilla, but an even number of tortillas would have been appreciated for our table of two. The shrimp aguachile was a lovely pairing as well, also bright and acidic. Having overcome the tortilla shortage, however, our next course came out: a Brazilian potato stew special. Similar to pozole, a base soup is provided, along with accouterment (avocado, chicken, capers, a chipotle sauce, and sour cream). I hadn't thought soup could be shareable, but with two spoons we happily dug in. Some time during the soup, our baked eggplant came out. It was reminiscent of eggplant parmesan, but with a delightful mole sauce and feta cheese. After all that, we had to see a dessert menu. From what I can tell, the Gringo Churro Donuts may be one of the most popular desserts, and we followed the crowd. A la mode was an option, and we took it (having had a lot of Whole Foods ice cream in my life, it tasted quite familiar, though I am certainly not mad about that). They thoughtfully include a mezcal pairing with each dessert, and though we did not avail ourselves (we had had plenty of mezcal at this point), if you were looking for a digestif I'd highly recommend the pairing. All in all, this restaurant made me furious: I had been living a half mile away for years and never tried it. I will certainly be back, and my girlfriend and I keep talking about how good it was. Secret hidden gem!!! I almost don't want to write this review, but the restaurant deserves it and I won't gatekeep. :) I first discovered this restaurant when looking for a place to have a quick drink before eating dinner at another restaurant nearby. I quickly discovered they have an INCREDIBLE backyard. You feel transported to another place in South America surrounded by a canopy of trees, lights, and clay walls with beautiful decorations. I also loved the atrium, which is sort of an indoor/outdoor section completely enclosed by glass where you also get the outdoor vibe. They kindly squeezed us in before another reservation and we got a couple of drinks - both of which were delicious! Then I realized... I should have my birthday dinner here! I had never tried the food before, but the drinks were great, so I just went for it. Viridiana was a dream to work with. We collaborated on a family style menu at a fixed price per person, which was very helpful for my guests to financially plan for the dinner. And she made a special menu with the name of my event at the top! All of the food was AMAZING. Oh my goodness. We ordered basically the entire menu, so diners should feel safe ordering anything. I would come back for the Brazilian cheese bread. Again, I had never eaten before, so it was a gamble, but we hit the jackpot! This weekend I ventured to Fort Greene to enjoy the neighborhood vibe and decided on a meal at Colonia Verde. The atmosphere at this quaint little hot spot is transporting. Upon entering the front dining room one is completely unaware of the gorgeous little oasis that lies just beyond in the atrium and subsequent outdoor patio. I was seated in the patio area and it was a beautiful bit of a mirage that felt like a magical little courtyard in a hacienda in Central America. The staff, while friendly, were not as attentive as one would have hoped and the wait to be seated, place orders and receive orders was a bit extensive. That said the drinks and food that finally followed were elevated and worth the wait! I began my meal with a Spicy Margarita with Tajin and lime that was both refreshing and bright on a steamy summer day. I ordered the Esquites as an appetizer. The brilliant mix of charred corn, pepitas, mint, cotija cheese and cumin dressing tasted like the essence of summer with brilliantly balanced and authentic flavors that were both indulgent and satisfying. For my entree, I decided on the Shrimp Tacos and opted out of the avocado, chipotle cream with which they are customarily served. The tortillas are among the absolute best I have had and the shrimp was perfectly seasoned and cooked! Unlike the traditionally heavy serving of refried beans, they offered a thin layer that provided the flavor without the weight. I chose to add a bit of my Esquites to the tacos and it proved to be a deliciously wise choice. The marriage of flavors was divine Last, I couldn't resist the promise of the Little Piece of Brazil dessert. This succulent Yuca Coconut cake topped with whipped cream and lime zest was delicate, complex and unique. The yuca creates a surprisingly light background from which the abundant coconut flavor bursts. The creamy homemade whip and lime zest balance the rich coconut flavor to create an inspiring flavor profile unlike any dessert I've had to date . Colonia Verde offers next level mastery of latin flavors and, if you can be patient with the slightly lackadaisical service, it should definitely make your must try list the next time you are in Fort Greene. read more

Came here on a Thursday after 6 and the place was already jumpin! Thank God that we were able to land the last two seats at the bar and was immediately greeted by Jorge the bartender slash waiter. He was great, the food was great and so were the folks who sat next to us at the bar. Where we sat, we had open access to the kitchen where we saw all the scrumptiousness being prepared. Update: I'm rounding down to a 2 because we got shooed out of there! I hobbled into this place for a late brunch after breaking my heel 1 block away from there and was hoping for a nice and unstressful dining experience. Instead, I had a mixed one. Food = 3.5 / 5. Service = 2.5 / 5 aka middle of the road. I sat in the back across from the kitchen watching the staff work so hard to prepare dishes that looked appetizing. Our server Amando was lovely and their actions epitomised stellar customer service. We were provided so many recommendations and guidance about the menu items. I asked Amando what their favorite brunch dish was and although I was recommended shrimp tacos, I decided to go with duck chilaquiles. The flavor of the duck is nice and it's a pretty large portion of food to keep you nice and full. Maybe it's missing some onion? The yucca coconut cake with lime zest dessert with the cream on top was also tasty. At some point after we finished our meal, we hung out for a bit in the restaurant just chatting. After a while, someone possibly named Sebastian came to our table abruptly and introduced himself to us by barking in our faces that we need to leave because (paraphrased), dinner service is starting soon and he needs the table. It was then that I noticed that the restaurant had cleared out and was empty apart from staff and ourselves. His tone and approach were aggressive and rude (hence why I used "barked"), especially considering that we'd been sitting there, not warned about this by him or anyone else while we were there (or we would have left). He approached us as though this was something we were repeatedly being told. Maybe he was having a tough day or maybe that's just the way he talks. I could try to be understanding about that. Unfortunately, a manager who conducts himself that way with customers has potential to scare them off. Remember how I mentioned my heel broke? The boots were brand new I was upset about almost spraining my ankle from the incident, but didn't feel the need to take that out on anyone else whether it was The Outnet's (grrrr!) customer service agent I spoke to right before entering the restaurant or the restaurant staff. My friend and I chatted for a bit outside the restaurant about how uncomfortable that was and how we didn't deserve to be snapped at. A different staff member came outside to talk to us in an attempt to explain that the restaurant had dinner service while not addressing us explaining that our disappointment was with how aggressive and rudely the information was delivered to us by Sebastian. Started off with the crispy pork belly in salsa verde that had fragrant herb flavors with a touch of tangy vibes. Pork belly pieces were indeed crispy with a good meat to fat ratio. Let me start off by saying food and drinks are solid. Got the Agua Chile Shrimp and Ribeye and they were good. But what I found a little disappointing was this specific table that we were sat at. This table looking out the window should be only for walkins! We were cornered right next to the host stand, phone ringing and food delivery right next to us. The best part was the view, the table was leveled with the seats outside so you can see peoples behind. No offense to the woman but a $300+ meal for 2 people should not include that. Went here for dinner last night and overall had a solid experience. The food I tried was tasty, and the atmosphere was great for a night out. That said, I noticed that a lot of the menu items included pork or cilantro--which I personally don't eat (I have the gene that makes cilantro taste like soap). It made my options a bit limited, but what I did order was well-prepared. My friend, on the other hand, loved everything she tried and raved about the flavors and the drinks. So if those ingredients aren't a dealbreaker for you, you'll probably have a great time. Would be amazing to see a few more flexible or customizable options on the menu in the future! We're so sad that the quality of the food has dropped so far down since the last time we came a few years back. Their shrimp taco, as seen in the picture below, comes with ONE small slice of avocado, despite their price increasing to 23 dollars. The tortilla is large but the filling is incredibly limited, making you wonder how they couldn't add one or two more slices of avocado for that price...since the wrap was huge with such little fillings, the entire dish tasted overly bland. This used to be our favorite, but now it became one of the worst shrimp taco we ever had :/ The fries came 10 minutes after our main entree arrived, and they also did not have any ketchup to go with the fries; it comes with a overly watery chipotle Mayo that barely stuck onto the fries because of how watery it was. The hostess told us the fries was around 5 dollars on its own, but they charged us 8 at the end, which was unexpectedly shocking. The duck and chips were also nothing special, with the duck being overly lean with no fat to make it a bit more rich. The hostess was very friendly but seems like she doesn't know the prices of their items, which is unfortunate. Service was often chaotic and inconsistent, albeit it being a Saturday during brunch so I understand if they're overwhelmed. We really had high hopes for Colonia, but this experience was so disappointing and demoralizing :/ unfortunately I can't rationalize coming back for the poor quality and high price tag of their dishes.. I've come here several times now over the last few years and stopped by again yesterday and realized I never left a review for this place. Overall, the interior of the space is spacious and quiet when it's not busy. They have outdoor seating for the warmer months as well as a backyard patio. Highly recommend their shrimp tacos and the golden tilefish for lunch. The fish and risotto have a lovely texture whilst being light and creamy. You must also try the pork belly appetizer. The shrimp Al ajillo is delicious and flavorful but they come unpeeled so you have to work for the shrimp which is tedious and both my boyfriend and I disliked having to skin the shrimp. The palomita drink is spirit free and could benefit from some carbonation in my opinion because it otherwise leaned more towards a medicinal flavor. The staff are all very kind and attentive. Overall, I do enjoy my visits here and they are consistent with both service and food quality. Highly recommend checking them out!!! Stop by and enjoy their varied Latin American menu. read more

They reminded me a lot of the aromatic duck dish that you can find at many Chinese restaurants, which would usually be cheaper and greater quantity. The macaroni and cheese was pretty underwhelming. We had 2:00 reservation and the shop closes at 3:00 to get ready for dinner. The place was still bustling and took a bit before our server came to take our order, but aside from that all was fine. Very basic intimate open air concept that works, and feels relaxing. I went with the steak and was so in love with it, I forgot what else was ordered at the table. Steak And Huevos Divorciados Grilled skirt steak, rice, tomatillo, and roasted tomato salsa, and two fried eggs. I would recommend ordering the sauces on the side because the red is very spicy. Perfect savory, pureed black bean sauce and fresh avocado. We also got the breakfast arepa which I thought was ok, but my partner really liked it. Arepa was not too thick or dense, fried runny egg with fresh pepper and cilantro. We were pretty full but got the donut churros and didn't regret - slightly crispy outside but so soft and airy inside, tasted like churros but really a perfect light donut and chocolate sauce on the side. I paid two tickets to the Sunday Asado event in hope to interact with the chef and sommelier. While I had the great time initially, especially with the sommeliers in the mezcal table and the wine table, some particular server at the food table there constantly interrupted and harassed me because I tried to have a conversation with the chefs, which I thought is partly the charm of the event. I understand if the chefs are busy and can't have a conservation, but the server shouldn't harass me the entire time just because at some point I had particularly interest of the cooking process of the event. I asked questions about the ingredients, seasoning and etc, instead of just mindlessly consuming whatever the event was serving us (and praising the chefs ha), and the particular server there told me the chefs were busy and couldn't have the conversation. I backed off immediately and went to another room and used the bathroom. However, when I came back from the other room to the food tasting table, this particular server IMMEDIATELY BLOCKED me from even trying the samples of the new dish the chefs prepared and other attendees were already eating. The hostility was beyond reasonable. This particular server later explained that the food was not ready (while other attendees were already eating), but instead of talking to me, she physically pushed my hand trying to reach to the sampling food before saying anything because she WAS targeting and singling me due to the fact I asked for a second eggplant sampling dish (for an event that I paid over $100) earlier and tried to talk to the chefs. I thought the whole Sunday Asado event was to create an environment to talk to the people who are in the industry and have a great time with the fellow New Yorkers, but if the whole thing is just to create an overpriced event to yuppy rich New Yorkers to get wasted and mindlessly consume whatever pushed towards them and think they are cultural, then congratulations you succeed! After all, what's easier than paying over $100 and getting paid to feel "cultural" and good about yourself as both consumers and creators? Yeah yeah yeah everyone is working in the hospitality industry and things are hard, but this whole targeting, isolating and following episode JUST BECAUSE I WAS VERY INTERESTED in the cooking process and and the food was alienating and very much the anticlimactic of the event Colonia Verde was trying to create. We loved brunch in the greenhouse at Colonia Verde and will be back for dinner someday, hopefully in their adorable looking garden. The greenhouse is completely inside, so you'll be protected from the elements. We ordered the duck confit chilaquiles, which didn't look like much from the outside but were a hit. The burger was flavorful and delicious, and the breakfast tacos were also tasty. We split an order of the churro donuts with chocolate sauce - warm and decadent and the sauce was the die for.
