One of our favorites! There aren't too many places where you can get bubble tea around here, so I'd come here just for that, but their food is le awesome and very reasonably priced. Vegetarian options, check! No idea how authentically Taiwanese it is, but basing solely off of this place, my impression of Taiwanese food is very positive. Their peppercorn tofu is FREAKIN delicious, and you can order it w/o the hot peppers if you're like me and don't do spicy food. Their Taro flavored tea is both unique and tasty, though I'm not sure why, since it tastes similar to the milk that's left after eating a bowl of cereal : / I'm a fan of their almond milk tea as well. Great boba tea. Love the boba tea. My favorites are almond milk and taro - always with tapioca pearls. Only once have I had pearls that were slightly over cooked but they were really busy and the place is so popular mistakes are bound to happen. I tried their food once - bacon pork. Wasn't a fan. So good the first time, I came back and brought my daughter. Iced mocha with boba is so good...like a coffee milkshake. Watermelon cream is very refreshing. If you haven't ever had boba pearls, they are little tapioca gelatin balls that you need to chew and probably shouldn't give to a child under 5 (choking hazard). Peppercorn chicken is really good-I'm very sensitive to spicy food and it didn't bother me. Rice was cooked perfectly. Second time, I had pork sticky rice that was wonderful. Slightly sweet and smoky. Served with shredded dried pork that looks like carpet fiber, so don't be alarmed. My daughter had the pepper steak with rice. Similar to sweet and sour beef, but not super sweet. And the pork potstickers were excellent!! The only thing my daughter could find to complain about is how hard chopsticks are to use!! read more

Having just come back from Taiwan, I was in search for some quality boba. Had the lychee slush with pearls, and it was absolutely delightful. Say what you want about Austin's lack of proper Asian cuisine, but all the boba pearls I've had in this town have been perfectly cooked. The cafe was hot and humid, just like the motherland. This place was popping when I came in and it seemed like they had a lot of Chinese and Asian customers, so I was optimistic. The boba pearls here are pretty good, but everything else was below average. The milk tea was on the watery side and the shaved ice was a hot mess. I was craving some shaved ice since I hadn't had any in months and they don't have any in San Antonio. The shaved ice looked so pretty in the picture, but wasn't so cute when it was finally prepared. The shaved ice is basically plain flavorless ice. They don't have any other ice flavors like mango etc here. You then get to put on some toppings. There are no fresh fruit topping options like I'm used to on the West coast. They pretty much just have puddings, jellies, boba, beans, and sticky rice based toppings. I chose my 4 toppings and then they put condensed milk and sugar syrup on it. Then they shaved some more plain ice on my toppings making it look like an ugly ice mountain. Then they put more milk and sugar on it. Overall, it was edible, but not what I was expecting at all and definitely the worst shaved ice I've had. I'm not Taiwanese, so maybe this is authentic, but I definitely prefer a shaved ice with a little more flavor and fresh fruit. The ice wasn't the best shaved either, not the smooth layers that you get at the really good shaved ice places. Coco's cafe may be a good option for food or some of the other items, but I wouldn't recommend the milk tea or the shaved ice. read more

Went here to get some shaved ice and some food after a nice day of kayaking on Lady Bird Lake. Was pleasantly surprised with their shaved ice (still doesn't beat Star Snow in Houston!) and their broad selection of Tawainese dishes and desserts. But beware regarding parking - be ready to circle for street parking (and don't park in the spots for the vegetarian restaurant next door - they'll tow!). Food: The shaved ice was pretty good with the standard toppings available. They are fairly generous with their toppings and ice, and serve it to you in these large styrofoam cups. I don't think they charge extra for condensed milk, so that was a bonus. It really hit the spot after an afternoon out in the hot Austin heat. Their savory dishes are pretty decent as well. Ordered a beef noodle soup and a couple of small side dishes. The fried tofu was only so-so, but the beef noodle soup was very flavorful. If you order a meal, I highly recommend trying their free soup they have on the counter next to the condiments - it's really tasty! I think most people overlook it, but when I went, it was a watermelon rind soup with lots of veggies and full of flavor. In fact, I've been inspired to try to make it at home. Service: Nothing to complain or rave about. Ambiance: Coco's Cafe has plenty of seating, although the closer you get to the bathroom, the more it smells like the bathroom (think back row airplane seats by the lavatory). Otherwise, it's clean, hip, and trendy. The condiments are only available on a counter along a wall, so don't expect salt and pepper to be at your table. I went in mid summer when school wasn't in session, but I can imagine this place getting very busy, very quickly. Pricing: Reasonable pricing. And I just can't get over the free soup! If you're going to just purchase a bubble tea drink or something small, make sure to have cash on you. They only take cash up to a certain amount (I think $5). They have these little snacks you can purchase to bump your tab if you only have credit/debit. If I'm ever in Austin, I'm sure to drop by. read more

Most recently they overcharged for curry that they had already run out of and offered to refund it only if I was willing to drive back in. I liked this place in the beginning, but now that I have gone there several times, I think of Coco's Cafe as an overrated shop. First of all, the food is not that great. Their spicy popcorn chicken plate consists of more flour batter than chicken. Several reviewers noted that the green onion pie is great. I disagree. The first slice is good, but you definitely won't be fighting for that last slice. Other meals are passable; nothing jumps out. The bubble teas are reasonably priced, but it's cheaper next door (I'm serious, walk over and check it out). They have shaved ice, a popular desert in the Taiwanese and Polynesian areas of Asia, which is basically snowcone-like ice mixed with a base of sweet syrups (condensed milk is often used) and covered with toppings such as beans and jellies. It is overpriced, however. The service is quite poor. First of all, they are understaffed. When the tables start filling up (which is every day), the service quickly goes downhill. Once, with a party of six, it took one of my friends over forty five minutes to get his plate. We were already done eating. Secondly, they accept only cash. This is nothing new, as many Asian-operated restaurants (don't charge me as a racist here, I'm Asian) do this. As for the reason why, I can only speculate. It is either for tax evasion or because they don't want to pay the credit card companies. Both are stupid (and the first, illegal) reasons. I want to give Coco's Cafe a three out of five stars because it's rare that you find a Taiwanese eatery like this in Austin, especially one that offers shaved ice, but its poor service forces me to give Coco's a two star rating. read more

You know a boba is below average is when you take a bite into it and the core is hard or feels like it's been left out to dry then soaked for just a bit. Not quality bobas. Their food is only ok especially their peppercorn stuff. Tofu is ok too. A plus is that they removed their minimum for credit card charges. Hope it's kept like that for awhile. read more

Coco's is a great place for drinks.. they are famous for the "Pearl Ball" or tapioca ball drinks.. I love the teas and milk shakes.. The food is good, nothing too fancy (Taiwanese food).. I'd been in the Drag location of this place once, and it was ok. I went into this place once for boba, and it was ok. I went today for lunch and it was really damn tasty! The drinks: I had a watermelon juice without pearls. Tasty on a hot summer day. Definitely has some sugar added to it, though. The Ambiance: you don't come here for the ambiance, do you? Really? I mean, they have Christmas garlands and things hanging over the door, for Pete's sake! And who the heck is Pete anyway? Or is it Peat? Like the dirt that Celts either use as firewood or make whiskey with? Anyway... The Food: If you order food, you get a free cup of soup (self serve). Pretty tasty stuff. I had "Peppercorn Tofu", which is essentially "Salt and Pepper Tofu". And, S&P here in texas means it's not peppercorns, it's jalapenos. Since I've yet to have any decent S&P dish made without jalapenos, I'm going to say that it's perfectly fine with me! So, get that. There are other "Peppercorn" dishes that aren't veggie, but this one was good for me, and beat out my previous favorite, T&S for that dish. I also had a 1/2 order of Green Onion Pancake. Pay attention now. Green Onion Pancake. And 1/2 order is well more than you need. I'd hate to see a full order! Really freaking tasty. I highly recommend it. My friend had some sort of sticky rice with pork wrapped in a banana leaf. It's her favorite thing, and it looked pretty freaking good. They also have a condiment section in the back by the soup and water cups. Soy with jalapenos, Chile sauce, Cilantro, Black vinegar, and plain soy sauce. Eh. Honestly, more of a 2.5. The food is so mediocre. I was craving Curry Rice w/Tofu, but alas they were out of curry. So I ordered the tofu stew w/rice. I had expected tofu soup, but instead it came out on a plate with two tiny balls of rice. Totally not worth $6. I can get something like that, and much tastier, in SoCal for $3. My friend ordered the Hot Spicy tofu w/rice & veggies. Let's just say that was not very good. We all ordered two appetizers: the veggie egg rolls and eggs in a blanket. The egg roll platter came with 3 super skinny rolls that you can eat in one bite. And the eggs in a blanket--if you're wondering what the heck that is--is basically the traditional Chinese breakfast condiment of a thin layer of eggs on a Chinese pancake: 'danbing'. The drinks, however, made up for the incredibly mediocre food. I had a taro milk tea, and it had the perfect amount of sweetness. The boba was a bit too sweet though. I was looking to getting some Boba after eating pho, saw this place next door. I was expecting to have a list of options, but this place only have a short list of boba flavor. At least for me shorter than what I am used to from other Boba place I usually go to. They do serve shave ice and other food item, like Vietnamese sandwiches or pho. I find that places that sell other food items have less of a quality of Boba. If you want a simple flavor or shave ice, this can do it for you. I was in Austin for a work training and this place was suggested for lunch. I got the fried chicken and noodle soup! The chicken was light, crispy and flavorful. Also had the onion pie and it was like nothing I've ever tasted. Think of a crispy croissant consistency with chopped green onion baked into it. But the onion isn't over powering at all! I love Coco's! A great variety of drinks compare to other boba places in Austin. Taro milk is great! I haven't had a drink from there that I don't like. So needless to say, I'm a frequent customer. I haven't tried all of their dishes yet. But the spicy beef noodle soup is amazing! Their curry is pretty good as well. And the green onion pie is very addicting! Another dish I recommend is their peppercorn chicken with rice! Although sometimes the chicken can be a little dry, most of the times it's great. The reasons why I only give place a 4-star is because the place is a little tight. Very small spaces to move around the tables and sometimes the tables are not all the clean. When I want something light and refreshing, I love their Pineapple Slush and their Taro Bubble Tea! I'm also a sucker for their coconut milk slush... Great quality and great service and I love their location. There is a great Chinese Market right across from them along with the Ramen Tatsuya shop just around the corner. When I am in the mood for their food, the eel bowl hits the spot perfectly! Great quality of eel and I have NEVER gotten a bone from their filet. Don't know why I hadn't left a review sooner. So, here is the thing. I would give Coco's 5 stars except for the fact that a lot of the dishes that I love here are fried/ breaded/ doubly fried or both. Also, I find the Bubble tea mixes to be sickeningly sweet -this could be a personal preference thing. So much so that I can never drink more than a quarter of the cup. I now get my Boba tea from Barton Creek Mall, right next to the AMC Theatre. There is a small Sushi place there. The tea is awesome and not super sweet. Anyhow, potential clogged arteries and possible weight gain aside, the food at Coco's is generally delish! I love the Onion Pie and do often dream of it. Love the Fried Tofu and the sauce that comes with it is heavenly. The Peppercorn Chicken has a very good flavor and I love the jalapenos that come with it. The Pickled Veggies and Spicy Eggs are really good too. Add to that, the fact that the prices are ridiculously low! $3 for my half-pie of Onion Pie! All of these dishes get a 5 star if I didn't care about the occasional coronary event. Anyway, I now limit my visits and skip the Peppercorn chicken. I still eat the Onion Pie :-) Will recommend but check with your doctor or physical trainer first lol. read more

Love this place but it has a few problems. from what i've experienced The Good: Drinks come out fast Tapioca pearls taste wonderful The food is fresh and good (exept the free soup) The Bad: Sometimes the wait for onion pie is horribly long, I have waited 30 mins for fried food there. It is good but not when you are in a hurry. The free soup is questionable. It seems like they use vegetables that are going bad or that have gone bad in the soup. examine it the carrots have blackening on them and the cabbage has black too. I personally have gotten sick from it. Sometimes the counter girls seem to gossip loudly about other employees that work there. The tables are usually full of old dishes and food that others have left. I have eaten here next to someone else's old meal. (most seats were taken) and it stayed there the whole time i was dining. I reccomend this place for the drinks and shaved ice they are the best ive had in Austin, Cheaper than starbucks and good quality. read more

I'm a high school student who has a ton of Asian friends. I know the Asians in my school use this place as a hangout, and after coming here, I can see why. When I walked in there was a bit of line. This is one of those places where you pay at the register (no table service, kinda like Tacodeli, if you've been there before). The staff were friendly and helpful, which was good as it was my first time there. I ordered a milk tea with pearls and a curry fried chicken. It was my first experience with both these items (only curry i was familiar with was my native, Indian curry), but damn, both were heaven. Service was extremely quick too- there's no wonder why many youngsters like to stop in here for a quick lunch or even just a quick bubble tea. The atmosphere is quite nice too- pretty hip and a good hangout spot. Serms kind of like an Asian Starbucks in a way. I will definitely come again! read more

I was disappointed both times. First time, the bubble tea was too sweet that I felt pre diabetic. Second time, the beef broth tasted like water. It is the first time that I felt the urge to ask for a refund. My brother got the lo mein and it was too greasy. I couldn't stomach this and just left (and I never waste food no matter how bad it is). It was too disappointing since I have been craving Taiwanese food. The staff are nice though. read more
