I'd seen countless Yelp reviews taking about how great Coat Check Coffee is. I found myself downtown for an "Indy experience day" with my sister during July 4th weekend and knew that Coat Check would be on the list of things to do. I had pretty high expectations going in (thanks fellow Yelpers for making me drool from your descriptions and pictures!) so I was a little worried that the place may not live up to the hype. I am happy to report that I give them five stars, two enthusiastic thumbs up, an A+....( running out of cliches here!). The short of it was that my coffee (butterscotch latte) and croissant were so tasty and fresh. Why do I have to live in the 'burbs and not jave access to this place every day?!? Coat Check is the kind of place that makes me want to move downtown. Yes...it was that good! The space is huge! I couldn't believe how much room there was and how many tables could accommodate the guests. Located right in the Athenæum, it's easy to find. The staff were super friendly, even with my sister who dared to ask about the calorie count in the lattes (it's like we aren't even related!). She ended up ordering a chai tea. Not a latte, mind you; a chai tea bag. I seriously was ready to disown her. The butterscotch latte itself (because I clearly don't give a *** about how many calories I was ingesting that morning) was beautiful and had a surprising hint of citrus flavor to it. Can we just pause for a second and give homage to Coat Check's croissants? They are made on location and are worth the extra dimple in your butt. I even convinced my sister to eat part of it--remember she's the one who asked about calories....in a latte...at a cool coffee house. ‍ She agreed that it was very good. I mean, I bit into this piece of heaven and literally had a dollop of melted butter fill my mouth. I realize that this may sound disgusting but trust me when I say that this is how all croissants should be made. Do yourself a favor and check out Coat Check. This place used to be amazing. Their lattes were and still are my absolute favorite lattes ever. The workers are amazing and really take the time and effort to get to know you and learn your name/order. Previously I was able to justify spend $7.09 on a latte, especially because they refused to accept tips so it was always just $7.09. However, recently they raised their prices to where the same latte is around $7.70 AND they've started giving the option to leave a tip both on the machine or in a tip jar. I'm someone who feels bad not tipping so now my $7.09 coffee is $9.00 and I can't justify it. The coffee is SO GOOD just way to expensive for me to justify going :( read more

Coat Check is a phenomenal coffee shop and an ideal place to study or be productive. The interior of Coat Check is quirky and mismatched, with a wide array of unique seating options. The layout is very open concept, which was a nice change of pace from the cramped little tables I am used to sitting at, struggling to find room for both my laptop and drink. I will note that there are not a lot of standard desks or outlets but lots of different couches and chairs. And while it's not pindrop silence, there is a low level of noise so it may not be a great place to catch up with a friend. The coffee is excellent and the baristas are very friendly and knowledgable about their craft. The menu has some pretty out of the box coffee drinks with fairly original additions like candied orange peels or torched anise and rosemary. My favorite part about the experience by far though was the barista encouraging me to try a new drink. It didn't end up suiting my taste so he made me another one free of charge. I have come multiple times since and they always do this. It encourages people to take advantage of the less common menu items and try new things. I would highly recommend this place and look forward to returning myself! read more

The staff allowed us to to eat our lunch, and we showed our gratitude by purchasing butterscotch lattes and fancy teas. It was a win-win for both parties. I must say, the transformation of this space is incredible. What was once an open lobby now is now a coffee shop with plenty of room to sip your caffeine and co-work. Better yet, the coffee is as good as it gets from the beans (from Tinker Coffee of course) to the baristas. And yes, that butterscotch latte deserves alllllllllll the hype. I have been really into drinking Matcha lattes lately and this place has hands down the BEST matcha latte in town. It's right next YMCA/Rathskeller with lots of tables, couches, lounge chairs and stools. It's more on the noisier side but I personally enjoy that. Will definitely be coming back! This $5+ coffee beverage is a labor of love - from the milk sourced from an Iowa creamery (Kalona) to the orange twist toasting magic that adds an extra splash of surprising flavor. I'm hoping the word gets out about the level of thought and creativity that goes into each drink made here. It certainly explains the price. Beyond the drinks there is the made in house pastries ranging from fluffy quiche to pigs in a blanket. I was super impressed with what they're rolling out in what was once a cost closet. Speaking of the space...hoorah! My heart was filled seeing the Athenaeum so alive on a Saturday morning with a diverse audience. This place is so surprising. First, it doesn't have a loud storefront - it's literally the old coat check closet in the Athenaeum. You wouldn't ever suspect to find this kind of coffee hidden away so well. Second, they make their own pastries and baked goods from scratch...in a kitchen the size of a coat check closet. The quiche ranks among the top 3 slices of quiche I've ever had. Third, depending on your own personal preferences, the coffee could fight its way to the top of the heap of all third-wave coffee in Indy. I like a richer latte and these guys nail the milk steaming every time. Come try Coat Check if you want to feel like you've found the best secret coffee spot in town. read more

There is so much to love about Coat Check. They have an ever changing menu of drinks and food. They always seem to use unique and delicious combinations of flavors and even have some really good non-coffee options if you want something else. The atmosphere is a wonderful combination of old-fashioned architecture with more modern decor and seating. Super great space to get some work done. This is a very hip coffee bar in the lobby of an old theater that was designed by Kurt Vonnegut's great-grandfather. It was for historical reasons that I chose to add it to my itinerary. However, it exceeded my expectations! It was comfy and cozy, as you might imagine an old theater lobby to be, with rugs and plenty of soft places to sit and put your feet up. I noticed it was dog-friendly, so plenty of people were lounging around with their dogs. They also had a variety of drinks to try besides coffee, including local kombucha and what I got: the rhizomatic ginger beer (made with turmeric, galangal and lime). My friend got an iced matcha latte. Both drinks were beautiful and tasty. This is a great place to study, to chat, or just to sit down and rest your feet after walking a big on Mass Ave. read more

Love Coat Check! The wonderful barista was helpful and patient while I decided on coffee. I picked the butterscotch latte which was super delicious and I finished easily. They have a few different milk options like oat milk and cashew milk along with their local grassfed jersey milk which I appreciate. The cafe is spacious and there's plenty of seating. Even when they got busy it never felt crowded. I would recommend Coat Check to anyone in the area looking for tasty coffee. Although it is a great place to get work done, I've experienced some wifi interruptions when it gets busy. Coat check has just about everything! This cute coffee shop is located in the Rathskeller, right next to an art gallery and the YMCA, and below a theatre. They have a variety of signature lattes and coffee roasts. My personal favorite is the chocolate latte: tastes just like a dark chocolate milk! It's not too sweet and has a pop with the sprinkle of salt on the top which is perfect for those without much of a sweet tooth or chocolate lovers. I also tried to the pistachio latte and it's unlike any I have ever had. It's a party of flavors in one cup with the pistachio and tart lemon flavor but still has a hint of sweetness. Takes almost like a lemon bar with pistachios. I highly recommend if you are looking for something creamy but refreshing! In general, coat check also has food and a ton of tables for studying. The drinks are a bit on the expensive side as it's $7 for a speciality latte so that is a bit of a downside but every once in a while it's worth spending the money bc they taste amazing! read more

Although it smelled strongly of ginger, the taste wasn't overpowering and it was fairly smooth. Good pick if you don't like coffee flavored coffee. That being said, it sounded like their butterscotch latte was the preferred option for latte drinkers. Maybe it's because it was a lazy Sunday, but this is more of a place to sit and sip than to grab and go. I've been wanting to try this place for awhile now and I finally had the chance this past weekend. It was a bit confusing because of how it was set up and blocked off due to COVID. But they were following guidelines which is important. The staff was really friendly and had good suggestions. I came thinking they would have chai tea since I don't like coffee but they didn't. I ended up ordering a hot chocolate instead. I believe they made it with dark chocolate, which I'm not fond of, but it was still drinkable. The menu was not very readable. It was printed on a piece of paper and the ink was faded quite a bit making it very hard to read. After we ordered, we headed upstairs to some spread out tables. It's a great place to meet with friends or do some work. I'm curious to see how it would normally be once things get back to normal. read more

Love this place for so many reasons: 1. Located inside the beautiful Athenaeum. 2. Lattes are also beautiful. Prepared for quality over quantity, which, to me, is always apparent in the final product. My most recent visit I ordered the Pear, a seasonal latte, with house oat milk. 3. Scrummy pastries. I had the gargantuan vegan cinnamon roll during my last visit; snacked on it during my entire four-ish hour visit. Which brings me to 4. Super comfortable lounging space. It was so modern and cozy and there were SO many areas to sit, drink coffee, and study! The coffee and food was a bit expensive, but so is everything for two college students! My girlfriend got a butterscotch latte which not only looked amazing but tasted even better! I ordered a coffee of the day; Utopian blend, which I had never had before and very much enjoyed! Great tasting coffee drinks: check - the server asked my preferences and suggested the one and one so I could get my espresso kick in for the day while also getting to try out the famed butterscotch latte. Did the trick. The butterscotch latte wasn't overly sweet and actually a bit savory and citrusy Friendly service: check Cleanliness: check Spacious study/lounge area: check - there's music but you can head up or downstairs if you need a little more quiet. If you're cold natured like myself, bring a cardigan/sweater. Free wifi: check Comfy seats: check check (thank goodness for my boney butt!) Every week, I ride my bike to work from Lawrence to downtown with a group of fellow cycling enthusiasts. They love to reward themselves after a long ride with a delicious café and a savory pastry at Coat Check. I so look forward to this detour on our morning route now. Housed in the lower level of the Anthenaeum, this local coffee shop and bakery boasts wonderful espressos, belly-warming teas, buttery croissants baked fresh every day, and sometimes if you're early enough even some tasty quiches. The baristas are pleasant and very skilled at crafting any espresso drink you can think of. I'm very partial to ordering macchiato with a dash of cinnamon on top. They always drop the foam in the shape of a heart. Sometimes if I want a nice sweet treat to accompany my espresso drink, I'll indulge in one of their tasty chocolate almond croissants -- so flaky and scrumptious. Coat Check used Tinker's coffee. I do like their espresso and drip coffee, but I am not a big fan of their cold brew. It's a little too earthy for my taste. They also have a wonderful selection of herbal teas, local kombucha, and sodas if you're looking for something non-caffeinated. Stop in on your way to work for a quick pick-me-up or visit on the weekend and relax while you enjoy an espresso. There are plenty of tables and chairs to spread out on. read more
