The long-time standard among Indy coffee shops, this is the best I know in town for working or having meetings. The space is roomy and well-set up, with two- and four-top tables, a padded banquet against one wall, and a large library table you can spread out at (if you can get it). Sound levels are good (the music isn't great, sometimes repetitive and predictable jazz or 70s hits, but it's at the right setting of audible but not distracting). Outside tables get a shifting mix of sun and shade as they day passes. So, yes, it's the best coffee shop for work. Unfortunately it is not the best coffee shop for anything else. The coffee is generally fair; espresso drinks are inconsistent and never get the creamy richness a good cappuccino or latte ought to have. They use a variety of good beans that the company roasts at their 52nd street plant, but for straight-ahead drip coffee they brew it overly strong, on the Starbucks model. And the vibe is impersonal; no one has ever described it as "fun," I'd wager. I've been there twice a week for probably ten years, and among the current staff, no one has ever asked my name or obviously acknowledged recognizing me. There was a lot of staff turnover a few years ago, and the current staff -- maybe I'm projecting here -- but they seem kind of downtrodden. It's a busy place, hard work, and I get the impression that ownership/upper management doesn't do much to make the staff's lives livable. read more

The coffee shop gods smiled upon me during my first visit, and granted me an open table at which I could open up my laptop and work like I had planned. The place was super busy and all the tables were full, but somehow I managed to snag one. And I can see how this Hubbard & Cravens is busy: They have good beverages, good food, and very quick and friendly service. I got the Ginger and Lemongrass Iced Tea, which was one of their two decaffeinated iced tea options (the other was Raspberry Hibiscus). I also got a readymade chicken wrap, which was really good. By the time I showed up (which was around lunchtime), the baked goods case was pretty bare. Apparently, their baked goods go quickly, according to what the friendly guy behind the counter told me. So if you want a muffin or scone, it's probably best to get one in the morning! Parking is plentiful, and there is even parking in the back. WiFi is free (just ask them for the password!). read more

I was in the area for a class, and had an hour to kill and a hungry belly. Yelp suggested Hubbard & Cravens for lunch and it also had easily accessible parking during lunch hour. So it was Hubbard for the win. I instantly loved the relaxed, cozy vibe of the place. While it looks small from the outside, there are plenty of tables. And of course it has that heavenly coffee shop smell. The guy that took care of me was really friendly. I let him know it was my first time visiting and asked for suggestions on tea and light lunches. He was really helpful and I ended up with a raspberry hibiscus tea and a veggie and feta wrap. Lunch rush must have just ended, but the place was still very clean and tidy. There were plenty of tables for me to pick from, all of them clean. I got a comfy little spot by the window and enjoyed my lunch while I read. The tea was great, but the wrap wasn't my favorite. I would have preferred more veggie and a little less feta, but that's just me. I think adding cucumber to it would make it perfect. The feta was just a bit to strong for my tastes. One half of the wrap filled me up. I liked the place well enough that I'm interested in going back and trying out some other items and coffee. read more

It had been years since I'd been to this location. I usually get their oatmilk latte at the Broadripple farmers market and it's always delicious. I was in the area and knew I wanted to stop and get something from their seasonal menu. I went with the Winter Wonder Latte- Hollander white chocolate, brown sugar, espresso and your choice of milk (I went with oat). It tasted like Christmas in a cup! I got my husband their seasonal Krismasi holiday blend coffee, which is a medium roast. He really enjoyed it and we both said we'd order the drinks we got again. The man who took my order and the woman who made my drink were very friendly. There is plenty of seating for people who want to work or meet up with friends. It is everything that Starbucks is NOT - relaxed, calm, and inviting. I used to work at H&C in Carmel and had the best time! All the drinks are to-die for and unbelievably fresh, as is the food on offer (I can vouch for that)! The other locations are equally charming and less pretentious, perfect for a 20-something. I've tried every drink on the menu and have loved it, including the popular Elephant drink. I'd also vouch for the food, including this extremely picturesque veggie sandwich. The food is fresh and of high quality and can really fill you up! Before my latest visit to Hubbard & Cravens, I was debating whether I wanted to stick with my usual coffee order (an Americano), or if I wanted to switch it up. After looking at other reviews and pictures that were posted, I continued to see a drink that was frequently posted about, but I had no idea what was in it - The Happy Elephant. I went to the H & C website to see what it was all about. If I wasn't already intrigued by all of the pictures and reviews that I saw on Yelp, the description on the website convinced me that I would be working from H & C in the afternoon, while I enjoyed this fine beverage. The Happy Elephant is a seasonal drink (that they brought back due to popular demand), and is a frozen melmosa that is made with espresso, almond milk, honey, unsweetened cocoa and natural peanut butter - no added sugar, full of antioxidants, and a great source of protein. I couldn't wait to try it - it was made with all the flavors I love. When I went to order The Happy Elephant, I asked the barista if they had tried it and what their thoughts were. Without hesitation, the barista said that it was so good and I would love it. I ordered a small, which cost me around $4.75. When my drink was made the barista told me that she made too much and was giving me a medium instead, and boy was I happy she did. One sip, and I was in love. It was the perfect amount of sweetness and richness, all while hitting my soft spot for peanut butter. It was also the perfect afternoon snack (that also contained caffeine!) - filling enough to keep me going, but not enough to weigh me down. I loved this drink so much that I have wanted to come back every day just to get it again, and no, I don't think I would ever get tired of it! It was worth every penny, and I honestly wish they would rename it "The Happy Jayne" because I am just that obsessed with it. read more

Hubbard's and cravens is a super nice coffee spot! I visited around 8:30 and all the tables were full but I snagged a comfy chair with a side table to do some work. The feel is definitely sort of posh, feels more like "uptown" and not so much "downtown" which I'm not a super fan of but thats just my opinion some people love that! My mint tea was good but this shop looks more like a Starbucks than a hometown coffee shop. I will say there were lots of people talking and smiling and shaking hands, and that was super nice just as far as vibes go! I'll visit again maybe around slower hours. read more

It seemed only appropriate that when I was meeting a student from nearby Butler University that I would make sure our meeting was at a locally owned coffee joint and that it would also allow me to snag a new Yelp review. I wasn't sure I hadn't reviewed Hubbard & Cravens, I believe I'd actually been here one time previously, but a quick check let me know that this place tucked away in a small strip center at 49th & Penn would qualify. I never know if this is considered Meridian-Kessler or Butler-Tarkington, but what I do know is that this is a residential area of mostly middle-to-upper income families and older couples. My coffee companion for this occasion also shared that this was her first time at this location. Hubbard & Cravens started in 1991 in Indy. They've got 4 Indy locations, though they sell their coffee/tea products nationwide. This location is intimate, though a bit larger than you might expect. The layout is kind of tight, especially if you're in a wheelchair, but I couldn't help but notice that probably 75% of the tables could easily be wheelchair friendly. The parking lot is also quite small with two accessible parking spots to the back of the building. They are ADA compliant and a curb cut goes up to the sidewalk. The doorway is pretty workable - a touch heavy, but also clearly within visibility of many people. On this visit, the order counter was toward the back - to their credit, they did have a small sign out letting you know the front counter was closed. The guy who took my order was friendly - I wouldn't quite say hospitable, but the service was fine. The tables were completely full, a bit disconcerting since I was supposed to meet with someone and it was likely we'd need room to either write and/or record the conversation. However, it was only a few minutes before a table opened up that also happened to be wheelchair friendly. The tables are pretty close to one another, a little too close but everyone seems used to it and they were all friendly. That said, if you're wanting to have a private conversation that's not very likely here. Hubbard & Cravens offers free wifi - including 5G, though you'll need to ask for the password. They offer a wide variety of coffee and tea type products including the usual specialty products. I ordered a large cold brew iced coffee that was served up in a clear plastic solo cup. As I recall, the price was $3.65. The prices seemed reasonable to me - certainly less than a certain other national vendor we won't name. The coffee itself? I have to be honest. I didn't particularly care for it. It tasted a touch watered down and I doubt I'd order it again. However, they have enough other products that I'd easily return and order something else. I agree with some observations that there's a bit of a corporate vibe here. I also think Hubbard & Cravens lacks the warmth that screams out "Come back." I would easily come back if in the area, but nothing about the experience made me think of this as a destination spot. Overall, this was a solid 4-star experience. I really never considered any other rating. While I wasn't thrilled with the product ordered, I didn't dislike it. I enjoyed the atmosphere and appreciated the efforts toward accessibility. While not in my upper tier for local coffee shops, it's easily one I would return to and it's close enough to my home that returning is a realistic option. read more

Hubbard & Cravens Coffee was a great experience. A bit, crowded, the employees were still attentive and greeted me as I walked in, were ready to take my order right away, and completed it quickly. Offering a vast assortment of drinks and pastries, Hubbard & Cravens Coffee had plenty of options for me to choose from. There was also a lot of seating inside, however it was basically all taken when I got there. This can be expected at most smaller coffee shops though. Hubbard & Cravens Coffee offers free WiFi as well, which was a welcome feature for me to do some school work. The overall atmosphere was a fairly professional one but was still comfortable to be a part of. The menu was also very clear and simple to understand as a first time visitor. Hubbard & Cravens Coffee offers a secluded group work/cooperative space as well, which featured several large tables and a rack of free-to-read books. As a student, this space made Hubbard & Cravens Coffee a very appealing place to meet with group members for school projects. Hubbard & Cravens Coffee also has several unique coffee blends that are sold and advertised in multiple locations throughout the shop. One major benefit Hubbard & Cravens Coffee has over several other small coffee shops in the area is a dedicated parking lot. While shared with a bank and still relatively small, having this parking area makes accessing Hubbard & Cravens Coffee much easier. Overall, I give Hubbard & Cravens Coffee a 5/5. It's a great coffee shop that has a little something for everyone, a good atmosphere, friendly employees, a cooperative space, and a dedicated parking area. read more

Visited my first Hubbard's & Cravens in Indy! I went mid-day, so it was pretty packed! I got the iced Carmilla latte which was an unsweetened iced coffee and I was expecting the caramel+vanilla latte. I'm not sure if they forgot the flavors or it if it was just naturally this way, but got my order to go so didn't notice until I sipped while driving away. I'd like to go back and give them another chance and cross my fingers for being able to get seating next time. I noticed several people come in and leave because there was no open seating available.
