I'm sad to say after being a loyal customer at the cloud for nearly 10 years (seeing it through 2 owners and spending thousands on panini and coffee and highly recommending this spot to my friends), I will not be back. Despite the new owners mountebank friendly demeanor, they're after little more than the last few pennies in your wallet. If you under purchase, if you overstay without re-purchasing, or if you have colleagues join you and they happen not to purchase - the owner will repeatedly come to your table, red in the face and shaking with rage, demanding more capital. If you refuse you will be ejected from your table, and made to leave. Quite strange indeed. Perhaps their business is hurting. Perhaps they are unhappy with their choices in life, taking over a cafe in a college town, but one should not take these things out on loyal customers. I have never experienced such a willingness of a business owner to negate thousands in future returns over such small, arbitrary and opaque rules around seating in a half-empty space. If your business is failing, your customers aren't the problem. So, so long cloud forest, and thanks for all the fish. read more

I had the avocado toast, which was ok. I don't think it's worth the $9. It's one slice of bread and probably 1/4 of an avocado. It's just sliced on there with 3 tomatoes. No seasonings either... I also had an iced coffee which was too sweet and watered down. Their juices are great though! Had an orange/carrot juice which was fresh and delicious! It's a cute spot and local but the food and coffee needs improvement. read more

This is a quaint little place that knows how to make a great panini! Can I just start off by saying it was tough deciding which panini to get. There weren't that many options, but it was still a hard decision because all of the choices available looked scrumptious. For me it was a toss up between The Villager and The Fresh Mozzarella panini. The Villager was the victor and didn't disappoint in any way shape or form. I came here with one of my friends and we ended up sharing The Villager, which was ham, provolone, red onions, tomatoes, lettuce, mayo, and garlic pesto spread on foccaccia. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it... The ratio of filling to bread I think was perfect, as well as how the panini was cooked. I've had some panini's where the bread is warm but the filling is cold and stiff. I like my panini's warm throughout with the cheese completely melted and the meat warm. I never write bad review but I think people should be aware before coming into this place and walk out on a bad mood like I did this morning. We went here a several times before and quite the location even it is over price. And we went back again this morning with a very bad experience. I came in to order 2 coffee and a BLT while my husband were waiting outside. The man who took my order told me "no laptop please, tell your friend (my husband) to close his laptop. This is a dining place, not a working place" I was shocked, he literally just sat down for 1 minutes, not even while I were ordering. When I asked him why there are 2 people outside using the laptop and it's ok but not for us. He told me, that guy is one of the owners. I was super offended and decided to leave. I understand that maybe people might sit too long with small order but this is totally not ok for a coffee place in Davis. I will never be back. read more

This may be my worst cafe experience. I have never been made so in comparable at a place of business. Me and three others came, one of our friends did not order a drink. After a minute the woman at the register came to our table said what would you like to drink when he responded nothing I'm fine she rolled her eyes and went back to the register. I ordered a soy latte but it was half foam the taste was okay. My friend ordered an iced soy chai, it tasted like water and soy with a tiny tiny hint of soy the glass looked white. My other friend ordered a Italian soda and all the syrup sat at the bottom. Over all the building looked nice but the drinks and people were not so great. Reading other reviews I see this is a normal thing... why be in a people business if you don't like people. read more

This is yet another one of Davis' gems that I didn't have the pleasure of trying when I was in college. After a "ratchet" night of drinking with the boys (think: pregaming, Wickys at Cafe Bernardos, and lots of beer at University of Beer), all we wanted was a nice hot bowl of pho the next morning before we all headed back to the bay. Unfortunately, none of the pho restaurants were open yet! So my friend decided we should get some sandwiches from Cloud Forest Cafe. Great idea! We ordered the Cloud Forest Panini with a scoop of potato salad. They don't skimp on the insides (meat, veggies, spread, etc.) and the bread was perfect! There was definitely enough food for me to eat one half there and take the other half home. I'm sure a lot of people come here not only for the food, but also for the ambiance. It's looks like a little hipster coffee shop, and it seems like a lot of people like bringing their work to do here. read more

I love this place! Their paninis are really yummy and they accommodate and substitute anything you'd like on the menu. For example I went in there around 8:30 and wanted a breakfast panini. They allowed me to add on an extra and substitute cheese for a different type. Quality wise they're amazing and I'm definitely coming back to study. read more

The hazelnut latte and iced mocha is so good, you'll be coming back for more. The hazelnut latte is slightly on the sweeter end, but it's definitely nutty and creamy. The mocha was flavorful with an overpowering chocolate taste. Tried one of their "special of the day" panini and it came up short for me. I paid $8 for them to grill two slices of bread with cheese, eggplant, and pesto sauce. On the board it was written roast beef in there as well, but it wasn't in the panini. The place doesn't let you use their wifi unless you order something (which is fine) so I decided that I would study without internet for about an hour and then order coffee. I was studying with my friend (who had already ordered) for about 5 minutes and the owner comes up to me and demands that I order something. I told him that I wasn't using the internet and that I just wanted to study with my friend for a while but he tells me that he is still providing space... I didn't answer right away so he says "Pete's Coffee is right next door" before walking away. My favorite panini so far is the Cloud Forest panini on ciabatta bread. With avocado and pesto in it, I couldn't pass it up. The bread was pressed and grilled just right to give it that crispiness. It's so easy to eat that I scarfed it down in a matter of minutes. One downside is their side dishes. It's either baby carrots or potato salad. Both come in one of those plastic to-go condiment containers... Not much at all. But for the price, the panini makes it well worth it. Coffee is alright, but it's much better than Starbucks. Mocha latte was too sweet, but vanilla latte was good. I can't believe that went to school here and never went here until after I graduated... The food is delicious, and I love that they provide space for computer users and a place for people who want access to a cafe to visit with a friend and not have all spaces taken by folks sitting for hours on their computers. Food is decent and coffee is pretty excellent @ around $2.09 for a small. But something that really needs to be fixed is the owner's attitude. The owner tends to passive aggressively pressure people into ordering. If you come in with a friend and your friend does not order a drink, be rest assured that he will come up to the table you are sitting at and ask you what you want to order in an blatantly insincerely friendly manner. This is a very common occurrence. Even when I used to come here and buy a coffee every day he would consistently give me what seemed to be mean stares I'm assuming because the coffee is such low price. So basically, the owner can be pretty rude and money scrounging. BUT, other than that this place is really great for studying especially if you get a window seat. One of the few places I haven't tried until now for my 4 years of college. The cafe interior is very farm to table looking. I saw a few students studying there and since it's the summer it's very quiet. They have a wide variety of lattes, I decided to try the hazelnut where the coffee flavor was more pronounced than the actual hazelnut itself. Their panini sandwiches are more on the pricey side ranging between 7 to 8 dollars each sandwich. The sandwiches were filling though. My boyfriend and I got two sandwiches, the Castro creek and the turkey panini. (I don't remember their exact names) the bread was very toasty but the turkey pesto panini was very heavy, it needed something more acidic like a few slices of Granny Smith apples to cut the avocado and pesto sauce. The Castro creek was a roast beef sandwich and it needed a little more flavor to it. All in all the place get 3 stars for food and coffee. It was ok, but nothing stood out there. The atmosphere is cute and unique so I would recommend Davis students to check it out, but it's not worth a drive to go there. read more

3.5 stars First impression, this place is super quaint, casual, and am loving the ambiance. Second impression is this placed is packed, so that must indicate good things, right? Third impression, the music is absolutely amazing. Definitely would hang out for that factor alone. Now on to the bad. The hostess/cashier left a bad taste in my mouth. There's kind of a camaraderie when you see a fellow sista or brotha, but there was none of that. I said hello to begin my order, and she kind of just stares blankly and only speaks when I ask what size are the lattes (no size indicated). From then on, her tone was just super sinner and like why am I having to speak with you. Having spent several years in the food service industry, I believe you have to have a bit more of a personable demeanor and attitude if you're dealing so closely with customers. But hey, maybe it just wasn't her day. Now on to the food and drink I ordered. The matcha latte was served in a to-go cup, because all the in-house cups were taken. First sip was heavy on the matcha powder. Not sure if I love it or hate it. Honestly I would have preferred it to be creamier and sweeter. Next up is the food. I ordered a #1 Breakfast Egg Panini, which with just a little bit of tobasco, made up for some of the other least favorable experiences. All in all, I'll be back to give this place another try. I have a great sunday afternoon there the only bad thing about the place that its wifi is nearly non existent but luckily i dont really need it to do my work. Tried Cloud Forest Café today while looking for a lunch option. Their menu online had much lower prices listed and seemed appealing, so we headed over while in the area. We arrived at the café and wanted a coffee initially, only to be told that they were out of brewed coffee - at 1pm on a weekend?! They didn't seem to want to make more, at which point they tried to upsell us the much higher priced americano. We settled for a $13 panini and $12 berry toast, which each did not arrive at the table, but was for self-pickup at the counter with a buzzer, and it came on basic paper plates with single-use plastic utensils. This made the café experience much less enjoyable. With the "cloudforest" name, we would have expected more of a nature-themed ambiance, not Bob Dylan photos all over the walls and cheap picnic vibes. MOST IMPORTANTLY, you would be generous in calling these portions an appetizer, especially for the money forked over. The amounts did not even suffice for a substantial snack, and we ended up having to get more food at another place nearby. The food quality and freshness were good, but the portion size and presentation along with measly customer service and plastic made for a pretty disappointing experience overall. read more

Compared to the chaos of Mishka's or Peet's, this place is like a haven. Good, strong coffee, good selection of coffee drinks and alternatives, fairly nice proprietors, a quiet atmosphere, and free Wi-Fi, (though you need to ask the cashier for the password) adds up to a welcome change of pace from the aforementioned shops, especially if you're looking to study. Customer service was good, they had the drinks ready fairly quickly, and were very apologetic that one pot of the self-serve coffee ran out when I attempted to fill my cup. There's a limited seating, maybe for about 20-25 people, and I can only recall there being 2-3 outlets. Also, the parking is regulated by the city of Davis, so that means on weekdays before 6 p.m., you can only park your car for 2 hours at a time in the same spot. Good coffee, and on the right day, a great place to study. read more

This place has a lot to offer! Their proximity to campus, cool atmosphere, friendly staff, and quality of drinks/food are some of this place's strengths. This place has one major shortcoming though, and it's the reason it was so quiet here at peak study hour. The prices here are completely outrageous. For instance, I ordered a 16oz london fog for $5 not including a tip! My friend I came with bought a delicious Matcha green tea latte for $6. This place has so much going for it, but the crazy prices in a college town definitely hold it back. It's a shame to see its potential go to waste because of their pricing -- I can't help but think this place would be doing a great business with a lot of traffic if they lowered their prices to meet the budget of the poor Davis college student. read more

While this place tries hard to be a hipster coffee joint with sandwich options, it falls short for many reasons. When we entered, every table was taken, but most of the patrons had coffee beverages and not sandwiches. We decided to give the sandwiches a shot. We ordered the Caprese Panini with carrots. As we waited for a table and food, I noticed the employee touch the register, handle money, pick trash up off the floor, and then grab slabs of mozzarella cheese for our sandwiches! Yuck! I was pretty grossed out but continued to wait. When our food was finally ready, the end result was extremely disappointing. The panini was barely warm and the cheese was still cold. It had no flavor and cup of baby carrots were bland and uninspiring. Coffee beverages were also mediocre at best. Free wifi and a nice study environment? Sounds too good to be true in a college town like Davis. A year ago, my friend told me this was a place a lot of graduate students and professors frequent - she recommended it because it's much quieter and chill than most of the study spots on campus and downtown! She was totally right - I've been coming here ever since my first visit and I love it! They play super soothing music and the customer service always brightens my day! Oh, and the food and coffee are delicious! FOOD: I usually get their their breakfast and lunch paninis - decently priced and portioned and they taste great! You can get them with your choice of a side of potato salad or carrots. Then I get a coffee with my panini. The lattes and mochas are really balanced and delicious! Since I'm not a huge fan of drinks that are overly sweet I'll warn you that they do put a lot of chocolate in their drinks, it tastes more rich than sweet! My favorite here is the Zebra White Mocha - I think that's what it's called! SERVICE: The customer service is excellent - they always ask me about my day and sometimes they'll upgrade my drink to the next size, free of charge. AMBIANCE: Not much to be said, it's a fairly spacious coffee shop with multiple wooden tables and it's always nice and warm inside! The menu items are written in chalk to the right of the cash register and they have seasonal coffee specials you should definitely try! There aren't too many outlets here, that's my only gripe - so make sure your laptop is charged before you come! Besides that, this is my favorite coffee shop in Davis! Cutest patio in Davis for sure. I usually stop in quickly for a to go latte on weekdays (the honey latte is amazing). But on weekends, my husband and I like to sit in the patio and drink our coffee out of their ceramic mugs- I swear it makes coffee taste even better! Sometimes its difficult to find seating due to students using the space to study, but over the summer this hasn't been a problem at all. Eh. I don't get what all the hype is about. I went here to get a panini because everyone has been RAVING about them, especially the cloud forest one. I even got a coupon for it that made it $5! But yeah, I walked in and awkwardly stood there for a bit before someone actually came to get my order. Apparently, the Cloud Forest Panini is now $6.80 without tax.. so I think it was $7.40. And the coupon for "any panini" did not cover it, as the Middle Eastern employee pointed out in a very rude manner to me. Alas, I thought since everyone has been saying such great things about it and how it's such a deal, I get it anyways and wait ten minutes for a single panini to heat up.. Really..? Since the employee was making it near me, I decided to kind of sneak a peak and.. SHE WASN'T WEARING GLOVES.. That's so gross! I mean, maybe she washed her hands and everything, but come on! You work in the food serving industry, lady. After she finally called my name, I went up to pick it up and she informed me that they ran out of the potato salad!
