Owner is unbelievably rude and nasty. He treats customers unequally depending on the amount of money you spend. If you read any of the other low rated reviews they will say the same. I sat down on the outside seating area with my laptop and the owner came out and told me "laptop hours" weren't for another hour. I closed my laptop. (There man was there with his laptop before me and the owner said nothing to him.) 5 minutes later the owner comes out again and literally tells me to leave because the space is needed for other customers and I told him I was waiting for my online order. His whole demeanor changed when he realized he was wrong for thinking I didn't order something. I totally understand not wanting non paying customers to sit in the area but he could have said that. Instead he watched me from inside the shop and made me incredibly uncomfortable for simply waiting for my order. Not to mention the weird power dynamic between the owner and the college students who work for him. Yikes. read more

My husband and I were on a morning walk for coffee and decided to pop in for a breakfast sandwich. We decided on the breakfast panini and as the employee was ringing me up she mentions that they don't allow outside drinks. I had my peet's coffee in hand not drinking it. I asked if we could take it go or eat outside and she said yes. Really awkward timing after paying nearly $30 for two paninis to tell me I'm not allowed to walk in with a cup of coffee from around the corner. But, we sat outside and we got our paninis. Nice seating on deck, my coffee was awful on this visit (4/5 green stars) I think I can see the problem here - a few students come in and overstay their welcome or don't order food or start eating their own food. The owner(s) get really pissed at this and start policing everyone. Nobody likes being treated with mistrust as soon as they enter an establishment (I certainly didn't). So, note to owners: you have to get out of this spiral and start being nicer to customers. I wasn't sneaking any food in. I merely asked what kind of milk they have and where their beans come from. These two questions were dealt with in a belligerent manner. I understand that some places are not yet used to being asked questions along these lines - it might seem like an intrusion. But a lot of people want to know what they are eating and drinking these days - either for health or ethical reasons. I'm not one to give a place one star because a server was cold or unfriendly. That's just one part of the experience. I like the space - especially their outdoor deck. But my Americano ($3.25) was not good at all - it was about the same level as Folgers instant. I have a memory of it being a bit better last time I was there, so perhaps it was just a bad day... Overall, I enjoyed sitting on their deck (the third star was for that) and might give them another try for tea and food. I'm giving the Cloud Forest Cafe 4/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: * In the end I didn't find out where their beans came from - they are roasted somewhere in Davis. There's no info on trade practices or sustainability. Overall, I think they deserve 3.5 green stars but would give 4 stars if I knew their beans had a positive social or environmental impact. I'm rounding up for now. * They stock almond (not organic), rice and soy milk. * Their teas are amongst the best that you can find, in terms of impact: Equal Exchange and Choice Organic. * Their cup lids and cold cups are standard plastic. They do have ceramic cups and plates for in-house. * I think their pastries come from the Village Bakery, which I reviewed separately (4 green stars). * Decent selection of vegetarian and vegan food options. Horrible experience. The customer service was non-existent, and the older man who helped me (assuming he was the owner) was downright rude. After ordering a latte and simply asking if I could have one pump of two different flavored syrups, still less syrup than would come in a regular latte (4), he told me he would have to charge me MORE for this. I kindly agreed with no argument even though I knew he was still using less product. I love supporting small businesses and know sometimes their prices will be higher. After sitting outside for a bit, I moved inside to the only place with an outlet. I opened my laptop and sat there quietly, like many other patrons were doing. He came over to me within two minutes and told me my laptop wasn't allowed here?? Apparently only on the other side of the wall where there were no outlets. In a CAFE. I had been kind and accommodating and felt like he was just picking on me. I got up and left. I won't be back. Greed and poor customer service will not get you return business. Do better. read more

First timer...bad experience! A place where all customers are not treated equally. I ordered my panini, then sat awaiting my order. A couple bad mouthed me for apparently breathing the same space as them with a Philz cup. They assumed I ordered nothing and sat down with my Philz, still inexcusable! I told the couple rest assured I have ordered. They, after speaking very loudly about me, are denying ever saying anything. Assuming the guy who brought my order was the owner, he comes out with my panini and sees words being exchanged back and forth. Knowing the situation now, he goes to the couple and talks to them, kissing up, they must be regulars. Saying enjoy your trip, come tomorrow, etc. I get no apology from anyone. First and last time!!! Cloud Forest Cafe has a lovely wood deck shaded by some wonderful Oak trees. It's a great spot to sit outdoors.

My experience is similar to others, the owner is very unwelcoming to students. I enjoy their coffee and sandwich (though overpriced for what you get) but after a rude encounter with the owner over asking to use their WiFi as a paying customer I've never been back and will never go back. Cloud Forest Cafe makes me feel like I'm on cloud nine! Quaint and cozy, this cafe is a hidden gem in downtown Davis. The staff is INCREDIBLY sweet and helpful, the food is delicious and fresh, and the atmosphere (reminiscent of some European cafes) is perfect for chatting with friends or studying. I got a BLT panini and a sweetened matcha latte, and it was perfect for a rainy day. The matcha latte especially was DELICIOUS, I highly recommend it if you are looking for a stronger, milky matcha flavor. There's plenty of outlets along the walls, and they give you a wifi slip (about 2 hours) with every purchase. A little bit pricey for daily studying, but I will definitely come back! read more

Best PANINI in town! You have to try this place out if you want simple, healthy, and fresh panini. I love my cloud forest panini with rosemary focaccia. The panini is well constructed so you don't feel like a slob while you're eating it. The reason why I chose this place originally was because of their juices. My favorite is beat and carrot juice (I know this is not for everyone but if you feel adventurous, I highly B&C) This cafe has nice background for you to take pictures (that are IG worthy). The ambient is very chill and relaxed, perfect for a weekend brunch. P.S. We get to try green tea affogato, which is not in the menu yet! Cloud Forest gets two thumbs up from me! Great place to come and get work done -- the amount of people here throughout the day tends to ebb and flow. There were more people at 930 am than 1130am so really try your luck! So far I've tried two of the breakfast sandwiches -- the sausage and egg and the vegetarian option. Both really tasty and good value for the price! They serve coffee in real mugs which gives your time here a more homey and welcomed feel. Coffee is decent! The mix of music they play is decently eclectic, tending to have more of a 70s and 80s vibe. One of my favorite parts are all of the windows along the front and side which offers a lot of light to work places inside! The employees that work here, at least the ones I've met, are really sweet. This is such a cute little cafe spot. I love places like this. They have some unique foods here. Came here because the paninis looked really good and I love paninis. The cloud panini which had veggies, turkey, pesto, mayo, tomato. You get to choose between a focaccia bread or a ciabatta bun. I opted for the focaccia with rosemary. The panini was really good. One of those where all the flavors went so well together and though simple, was very satisfying. We also tried the villager. It was pretty much the same except with ham and provolone. It was also really good. They also make breakfast paninis with eggs and stuff so I definitely will come back to try that. As for drinks, good drinks. We tried the pomegranate iced tea. After adding some sugar to it, it was really refreshing and fresh. Overall, great place for breakfast and brunch. Also a good place to chill, do some work with their WiFi. I love this place. The coffee is good, the food is excellent, and it has a really friendly, easygoing vibe. There's a limited menu, but I think that's why it's so good--they don't try to do everything, but what they do they do well. I think the toast options (avocado, of course, but also sweeter choices like ricotta and berries with honey and powdered sugar) are as good as those at more expensive, busier places like Philz. I ordered some coffee and came here to do some work. The coffee was great! They have lots of tables around the cafe so you have space to get your work done. There's a lot of outlets aligned against the wall so that you can keep your devices charged. The wifi here was pretty fast. I don't remember the exact numbers, but It was at least 17 mbps when I did a speed test for downloading. There is also some outdoor seating in front of the cafe if you would prefer getting some sunlight. My favorite part about the cafe was its employees. I love mom and pop coffee shops, especially when they sell delicious, delicious paninis and salads like Cloud Forest does. I'm a bigger fan of their food than i am their coffee, which is better than Peets, but not as good as Mishka's. It's not expensive considering the portion size (which is substantial, but not gargantuan) and the free-ness of their Internet. Granted, they do request that, at peak business hours, you don't stay at a table for more than 2 hours...but I've never seen it so busy that I wasn't able to spend a whole afternoon reading or writing there. They have indoor and outdoor seating: the little patio area put front is both ckmdortable and picturesque. The seating inside is a little awkward and the chairs not particularly pleasant to sit on for very long periods, and I'm never as close to an outlet as I would like. Overall, I'd rank this among the top three coffee places in downtown Davis. Not my favorite, but definitely one I'd go to regularly. read more

My first time here, and I got the pink lady drink because so many yelpers got it and had good things to say about it! I really like it! It has orange, pineapple, beet, and lime! It's all organic and fresh as well which is really nice! I also like this cafe cause it has a nice and quiet atmosphere. I love this coffee shop! It's the one by the red English phone booth. They have a great food selection as well as an espresso bar and juice bar. When I'm hungry and I want a macchiato, I don't have to choose food OR coffee. I can do both! I usually have the Cache Creek Caliente (roast beef) w/carrots and I really like the sweet almond butter toast with bananas, honey and walnuts. I also like the Pink Lady juice blend (not sure what's in it.) They have a nice mix of students, grad students & long time Davisites. It doesn't feel cliquey like a lot of coffee spots.
