Coming to Clementine Bakery is like reaching an oasis after wandering the desert for 40 days! This place has been on my radar ever since it opened and today I finally made it here and boy was I excited! I walked in and there was an older couple ordering at the counter. I was busy ogling all the wonderful VEGAN sweets in the two cases but sadly my ears were picking up everything. The woman at the counter was asking the counter guy where exactly is the location of this bakery. He responded, "the bakery is in Clinton Hill." She then asked, "is the bakery in Bed-Stuy?" He then said "it was on the border." And then she said, "I don't want to be in Bed Stuy, no where near it." I then looked up and couldn't help but roll my eyes at her. And on top of it, she was Asian. God, she made us all look bad. Get the Hell out of Brooklyn if you can't be in certain neighborhoods. Shame on you for being a neighborhood segregator! OK, I digress. Finally, when this woman was done her ranting, I was able to have my order taken. Michael, the counter help, was extremely nice and helpful. Since I am a glutton, I told him I wanted to buy one of everything in the two cases. We both realized that that was not reasonable, so he helped me choose a slice of cake, a cupcake, a cookie and a savory snack. Yea! I ended up with a slice of cookies n cream chocolate cake, a lemon raspberry cookie, a chocolate chip cupcake and a savory biscuit with VEGAN gravy. I really really like the lemon raspberry cookie, it has a nice tartness to it. The savory biscuit is great with the VEGAN gravy. It now makes me want to come here early in the morning! Went there to get some vegan treats for my birthday. I got 4 cupcakes: vanilla, chocolate, Mexican chocolate and carrot cake. They were all super tasty, moist and delicious. I was kind of freaking out how good they were. My favorite flavor was the Mexican chocolate - such a rich chocolatey flavor with a nice little kick to it (yeah baby). I also tried a slice of their chocolate cake and I think the other slice of cake was blueberry passion fruit. Both were amazing! The regular girl up front has been replaced by a really sullen guy who treats the customers like he's doing them a favor (and I even gave him a tip just to make his day a bit nicer- NO DICE). Been there twice and now I'm in love. I have to start with the warmth and friendliness of the staff. The owner should be very pleased with them. Everything is vegan though not labeled as such. This is brilliant. If that word turns people off than don't use it. The seating is tight, a table or two and small counter inside and two tables outside so you might be taking yours to go. On to the food. I have had three sandwiches, the Schmancy, the Autumnal and the Tepheh Reuben. The best was the Autumnal. A great bbq sauce and delicious ingredients. It came with a sage mayo on the side that was not that great when I tasted it. I put some on the sandwich and it raised it to a great new level. The Reuben was good but not perfect. Its awesome homemade bread was delicious but so think that the Daiya mozzarella did not melt fully. It also needed more dressing. I would get rid of the Daiya altogether, use more dressing and re-name the sandwich because it is not reminiscent of a Reuben. If you want a vegan Reuben that mirrors the traditional version, try Snice. The Schmancy is a delicious celebration of pesto. I would be thrilled to have any of them right now. We also tried some potato salad which was quite good. For dessert we had a thumbprint, a small cookie with some fruit jelly in the middle. Decent, had some autumnal spice. I also tried the chocolate coconut cupcake which was great. I have no clue why most places don't just make their desserts vegan already. 2nd visit to this bakery and once again wasn't really impressed by customer service. The first time my husband walked out because the cashier was yelling out that there was only a 5person limit and looking at us when we were ahead of the group of women who had come in after us thus making it over capacity. Today I ask the cashier what flavors are left and she replies you can read the signs on the window. I was the only customer in there... taking the time to talk about the pastries would have been nice. Ordered the carrot muffin asked die it to be heated, only offered to put it in the panini press and it was cold still on the inside. They had wayyyy too much cinnamon but the lack of customer service was the real turn off. In these times it's especially important to make all customers feel welcome. read more

I have given this place too many chances and now I really feel like it needs to be said. The food is good, I cannot deny this. Compared to the price for what you're getting, its a good deal. I never had vegan red velvet cake taste like one of my favorite non-vegan places in Brooklyn. The issue is that their business ethics and customer services is severely poor, so much to the point that it didn't matter how good their food is. Not only is their staff (not all of them) cold and dismissive which is beyond the norm for New York paucity of outward kindness, they cancelled so many of my orders without notification. I went as far as to order something the DAY BEFORE, which eventually led them to cancelling it again without notice. My biggest gripe is when we tried to order a wedding cake a few years back. Gave the specifications of what was wanted and scheduled a tasting. They haven't contacted back for 3 months close to the wedding and when we reached out, we continued to get no response. Eventually we got into contact and told them to cancel the order since we felt our business wasn't valued. The person on the phone not only didn't apologized, but was very remiss to cancel the order. That definitely solidified our feelings that our business didn't matter at all, especially for someone to decide to choose a place for a very meaningful occasion. That was very low of them. Being the only decent vegan cafe and bakery within vicinity, I'm guessing they feel they're a greater need for them without the need to improve. However, that's expected from placing a business such as theirs in the middle of a gentrified neighborhood. I ordered a lovely cake from Clementine nearly 4 years ago for my daughter's 3rd birthday. It was a big hit and delivery wasn't an issue. Fast forward to middle of last week when I needed a cake for an Easter dinner my son and I were invited to. I'm 7.5 months pregnant and have a toddler so even though this cake was much smaller, i figured after the great experience I had before, I would pay the extra cost, order another strawberry cake from Clementine and pay for delivery. I ordered the cake Thursday and scheduled a delivery of the cake for Sunday (Easter) between the hours of 2-4. I received confirmation of ordering the cake and the scheduled delivery through email. Fast forward to yesterday (Easter), at my friends' place from about 3:30 watching our kids play. The cake hadn't arrived yet, but no pressure. Dinner wasn't until 4:30. Around a little after 4 I started making calls to Clementine to check up on the delivery. I was told that the cake was en route but there was a 3 hour window on either end of the delivery time. Something that would have been nice to know when I ordered the cake and scheduled the delivery. That means the cake could arrive anywhere between 11 and 7pm?? My friend has a 24 hour doorman who could've easily taken the cake and held it for us, so if I had known that, I would've scheduled the delivery much earlier. After calling back about 3 Times to check on the cake, the final time being just before they closed at 6pm, I was told again that there was no way for them to contact the driver or the delivery service (?? Seems like not a good arrangement when you have the customer pay $30 to send a $40 cake). What exactly am I paying for if you can't even call and check in on delivery status? I'm writing this review on Monday, the day after our Easter with no cake. My son, who loves strawberry cake, was super disappointed after I pumped him up about it the last few days, and my hosts, who are completely awesome and kind, were kind of incredulous that I could order a cake and there could be no way of checking in on the status of the delivery. They assured me when we left at 7:30, after picking at peanut m&ms and Reese's pieces from the kids' Easter baskets for our dessert, that they would let me know when the cake arrived. It never did. The crazy part is, I left my email with the woman i'd talked to various times throughout Sunday evening so that I could be contacted by a manager in the morning. It's 1:30 on Monday and still no word from the manager. So I basically gave the bakery $70 for nothing and they have nothing to say about it. I've emailed the manager now explaining what happened and I'm waiting to hear back. Hoping for a full refund and that they will make it right by delivering me another cake this week at no cost. If I don't hear back from them by tomorrow I'll definitely be calling my credit card company. If you're looking to order a cake for an event I would maybe look elsewhere. Wish I had read the more recent reviews and not just gone off of my past experience. Wouldn't recommend this bakery to anyone, which is sad cuz I would have liked to. Love the ambiance including all fresco on a quiet, leafy street. And I like the extensive menu of vegan breakfast, lunch, and desert items -- especially an impressive menu for a tiny place. I took a a cab from Manhattan to try this en route to JFK. However, the quality gives vegan cooking and baking a bad name. Heavy on oils salt, and overdone other seasonings. Low on fresh, low on balanced taste. Clumpy stuff turned up also in my chilly cupcake and spoonful of stale ice cream (store bought). I tried a bell pepper and cheddar biscuit (creative in concept maybe but execution was too oily) and a "schmancy" sandwich -- too much oil, seasoning, and salt ruined it. Wow, I am so happy to have Clementine in Brooklyn! I first tried some of their treats (cookies, I believe) at the Vegan Popup Shop at Pine Box Rock Shop earlier this year and I wasn't particularly impressed so it wasn't a priority to visit their shop. However, I am very glad that I finally did, as their items were WAY better. I got a mix of sweet and savory items for the road to share with a friend back at her place. We started with an artichoke and caramelized onion tart which was absolutely delicious, and a savory scone with peppers and tomatoes and onions, which was also very good. We heated both items up in the toaster oven, which I think made them even tastier. I also had a slice of the cranberry cake with espresso frosting (tasty, but I would have liked more action in the cake itself), and an apple/cream cheese brownie, which I ate the next day and really enjoyed. Vegan Treats has had NYC veg restaurants on lock for years and I am SOOOO sick of the same 6 or 7 cakes being rotated all over the place. Clementine offers a refreshing change, and has many unique cakes like the aforementioned cranberry espresso, pineapple upsidedown cake, various flavored brownies, sweet scones, cinnamon buns, savory pastries, pies, and more. Ordered a cake for my birthday. As it turned out, somehow, the order never went through. (An error on my part with my bank, not with them) I was very visibly distraught but lovely lovely Kirsten helped me out. She went above and beyond to help me find my order just in case it went through and assured me I could get a cake. And lo and behold, I was able to go home with one just in time for my birthday. Grateful for her sweetness and understanding. I'm a huge fan of their food and the varieties of sandwiches, coffee, and pastries, but I'd go back everyday for coffee because the environment is so nice. The cake was absolutely delicious. A friend recommended this place knowing I am Vegan and I don't know how I didn't go herer sooner! So far I only tasted 2 slices of the cakes, blueberry and Strawberry lemon. It was sweet, moist and didn't disppoint. The blueberry cake was full of whole berries and though the cake was grainier (healthier if cake can be) it was still incedibly moist. It was my husbands birthday so as vegans we wanted the closest thing to a traditional birthday cake. Now to the even more amazing strawberry lemon slice, it still was so soft and the flavors paired well. The cake was lemon and the icing a perfectly rich strawberry... REAL strawberry flavor. I was tasked with introducing some friends to their first vegan desserts and, feeling the pressure to make a good impression, let Yelp lead the way to one of the best in Brooklyn. I found myself at Clementine, a tiny but homey bakery in Fort Greene where they apparently do vegan baked goods right. The man at the counter amicably accepted my challenge when I all but said, "Box up whatever you think is yummy" and packed me two boxes full of goodies. It was a long drive back to my friends' place and I figured, 'What better way to enjoy the ride than to enjoy some sweet treats? I first dug into the salted chocolate chip cookies, which he described as "gluten-free without any of that weird GF aftertaste". If you've ever tried bad gluten-free cookies, I'm sure you'll understand why I was dubious, but I found these to be lovely - crumbly yet not dry, and just a hint of occasional saltiness so that your mouth is never overwhelmed with the sweet chocolate. I also broke off a brownie piece, with high expectations after someone had written that this brownie had "changed [her] life". I would respectfully disagree - this wasn't the very best brownie I've ever had (vegan or non). In fact, it was quite hard and only the very middle had any of the fudgy moistness that I personally enjoy in a brownie. Still, I attributed a lot of the textural disappointment to the fact that I bought these at nearly 5:30 in the afternoon, which was probably long after its infernal trip in the oven. Because the chocolatey taste was so spot on, I imagine these would be far better earlier on in the day, right after they've been baked. The last one I tried was the peanut butter and jelly bar, which the guy at Clementine announced was his personal favorite. I enjoyed this particular dessert with friends (I did leave SOMEthing to share), and when my newly vegan friend had his first bite, his eyes fluttered shut as he moaned, "This is exactly what I imagine pb&j would taste like as a dessert." A decadent layer of peanut butter cream sits on top of a buttery-tasting crumble layer and then the whole thing is given a light smear of grape jelly. This is sold in thinner slices, and once I tasted how rich and intense it was, I was thankful for the smaller serving, lest I eat too much of it and get knocked out into a sugary stupor. I loved how warm and friendly the bakery felt and could easily imagine myself coming back to try more of the more savory items (I saw a couple enjoying some delicious looking vegan grilled cheese sandwiches and really had to hold myself back). Some of the desserts were a little stale and clearly past their prime, but even then, they tasted delicious enough that I'd be willing to come back and try them fresh. read more

There is a small dine-in area of about 3-4 tables ( for 2) insides and some seatings outside in the summer. I had no issue findng a place to sit on a Monday night, not sure what its like on the weekend. The service was decent. I believe my server was new. You order at the counter. On my visit I had tempeh ruben, autumnal bbq tempeh and a berry rosemary cake. Both sandwiches was very good. The tempeh was flavorful and moist - nothing is worst than bland dry tempeh. they have one of the best rubens maybe after champs who serves theirs on rye. The cake was pretty good. I have been coming to Clementine for years, and initially their cupcakes and customer service was good. However, the last few times I have been there to purchase cupcakes; the cashier has been rude. Usually there is a long line due to social distancing guide lines. However, today when I went there around 3:15pm in the afternoon there was no line outside and there was literally no other person standing inside waiting to be served, and the slim blonde hair cashier around the counter looked at me, and went back to doing her work; then she had the nerve to take another customer's order before mine. Then when I went to place my order she didn't greet me. I ordered 4 cupcakes and one slice of cake; it came in two boxes, she offered no bag, and when I asked for one she put it on the counter and walked away. If it was a busy time in the bakery I would have assumed she was overwhelmed and having a bad day. However, since it wasn't busy, and I was the only black person in the bakery at that time. I am left to assume she was a RACIST. The quality of the baked goods hasn't been the same for awhile, and the only reason I was still coming is because the bakery is vegan, but I would rather travel all the way to Harlem to purchase delicious vegan cupcakes; then to support an establishment that hires RACIST to serve their customers; especially when the business resides in a historically black neighborhood. read more

First, the Autumnal sandwich is fantastic! I have to lead with that because my first and only direct exposure to Clementine was when they first opened and I found my bakery item (some muffin) to be lackluster. However, since then, they have upped their game. Last summer was my first exposure to this, a vegan birthday cake (actually, exactly a year ago) that my brother and wife got for their daughter. The inside looked like a swirly rainbow and the outside was a vanilla-y icing - and one of the best cakes I've ever had. My niece couldn't stop eating it! I had thought about going back since, but didn't until a lil' bird recommended I do so last week, which is when I had the Autumnal. Now, I hadn't even known that they served non-bakery items (pretty sire they didn't before) and while they all sounded great I'm glad I had this one with its BBQ tempeh, grilled kale, and sweet potato mash. I should've asked for the non-gluten bread, but forgot. The cashier was extra nice too. I haven't had any, but they sell vegan ice cream in various flavors as well. Clementine Bakery is a vegan eatery on the boarder of Clinton Hill and Bed Stuy Brooklyn. It is frequented by vegan foodies, hipsters, and lots of vegan toddlers. Clementine's specialties are baked goods: cakes, pies, cupcakes, scones, and muffins. Each time I arrive here, the people behind the counter are warm and friendly. They always have a smile and don't get annoyed when people ask a million questions about each of the various vegan goodies. This small restaurant has an atmosphere that is relaxed and casual. It is very Brooklyn, with random pictures, a horse, and dolls on the brick walls. The wallpaper looks like it is from the 1970's. They best way to describe the inside is - a combination of grandma's attic (the wallpaper and random knickknacks) and grandma's kitchen (the amazing smells and baked goods!). Each baked goodie I have tried here (and trust me I have tried a lot) has been delicious. It can sometimes be challenging to get the right consistency with vegan baked goods, but Clementine's baked goods resemble non-vegan baked goods in consistency and flavor. My personal favorite baked goods are their scones! As someone who has tried and failed repeatedly with vegan scones, I am very impressed with both the taste and consistency. They have both sweet and savory scones. Today I tried a mushroom artichoke scone that was filled with fresh herbs. The herb flavors were strong and it was a little salty. It was also dry and a little crumbly, as any good scone should be. At $3 to $5 for a vegan baked good, this place is a competitive vegan bargain! Although baked goods are their specialty, Clementine recently added sandwiches to their menu on their homemade bread. These are also incredibly tasty and, at $8, a great addition to their menu. I have tried the Tempeh Ruben several times and am never disappointed. They add apple to this sandwich, which is a nice sweet contrast to the vinegar in the sauerkraut. It is on whole-wheat sourdough and complete with vegan thousand island dressing. My one concern is that they add a very thick slice of vegan cheese, which makes the sandwich a little too heavy. I am sure if you asked for less they would be willing to compromise. Recently, Clementine also added vegan ice cream and milkshakes to their menu! I have yet to try them but they looked amazing. I highly recommend this place to vegans and non-vegans alike. Came here on on my Vacation and it was so good!! A Cute cafe with their own bakery on site. I had a breakfast burrito and it was everything! Tofu scramble, with potatoes and vegan bacon! I recommend going for daily specials whether in the bakery or for meal items. The sandwiches are good. I love the danishes and that's usually what I go for here. The cinnamon rolls are a bit sweet, but very good when that's what you're looking for. If you find out that the owner/head baker is in, definitely try a scone. When they open up the ice cream in the summer too, it's delicious. The only things that hold me back from a full 5-star review is that quality differs from day to day, and on somethings much more so than others. I also don't order coffee here. I do everything in my power to visit this spot as many times a year that I can. Location, service, and product are always magnificent. I work at a bakery, myself, and I have a soft spot for this kind of business. Everything is vegan. That doesn't always mean that things are exponentially good but in this case they do not hold themselves to the "it's good for being vegan" weird standard that a lot of people seem to have. I've tried almost all of the sandwiches and I've yet to dislike one. The autumnal is my favorite! All bread is baked in house, very impressive. I've been going to Clementine for several years now and you could call me a regular - this is my absolute favorite vegan place! But, I'll keep my gushing to myself and keep it short. Their baked goods are amazing. They added donuts to their menu a few months ago and they compete with the best vegan AND non-vegan donut options in NYC. Love their scones and danishes too. Amazing bakery! I love that everything here is vegan and that there is also soy-free options for those who are allergic. Their coffee is alright -- nothing special but their baked goods are delicious, rich, and does not that have the crumbly texture that many vegan bakeries have. I got a muffin and a slice of cake from here, will definitely come back for their banana-walnut cake. read more
