It's always great to have a place in town where you can have a great breakfast at a great price, lunch that's tasty at a great price and dinner that reminds you of home at a great price and has great service. Clarette's what happened? I know you're under new owners now for about a year or so, but can that be it? They supposedly know the game so what gives? My wife and I loved Clarette's from the time we arrived a few years ago. The eggs were fried correctly, the toast was toasted and the hasbrowns were actually brown without the grease. And the waitresses were attentive and some reminded me of my aunts fawning over me. That's not the case any longer. I was recently in for breakfast and the toast was warmed over bread, the hasbrowns were greasy (waitress said that everyone was saying that) and the overeasy eggs were cooked hard through. We came in today and wanted a grilled ham & cheese with fries, a Coke and a bowl of split pea with ham. It was only memorable by how bad it was. Now, split pea with ham should be thick, but this was mostly the dried out paste at the bottom of the pot with a thickness like dryish oatmeal. We had to get some hot water to stir in to make it like soup. The taste was good, but the question is why was it served in the first place. Didn't anyone look or care? You know, a grilled ham & cheese is supposed to be hot with the bread crispy and warm right off the grill. Apparently not any longer. On one side of the sandwich, the bread was crispyish - that was the side under the warming lamp. On the other side of the sandwich, the bread was soggy from the steam the ham was giving off. It was pretty soggy so that tells you how long it was under the lamp. You know they weren't busy for that time of the day (one waitress was even vacuuming the carpet - good marks there). Clarette's, what's the scoop? Now I know that the cost of everything is going up, but the grilled ham & cheese with fries is $16.00 and the bowl of soup is $8.00. We were prepared to pay that amount, but not if the food wasn't good or no one cared to make sure it was. Because the waitress who brought the hot water was the one who rang us up, she comped the soup. Shouldn't the aim be to deliver a consistently good product so people want to come back and make dollars that way instead of serving bad product and giving money back? Oh, because we checked, there's a place in Milton-Freewater that has grilled ham and cheese and it's only $6.00, 60% off. read more

Just had the Whitman omelette with hash browns and wheat toast. It was delicious and really hot. The place is pretty busy on a Sunday but the service was outstanding. She really liked her veggie omelette and the pancakes tasted really good as well. All the people who work here work really hard. You can tell. The burgers looked really good too. First, we drove 8 minutes away from the area most of Walla Walla eateries are at to find this place off the beaten path and packed! We feel we made the right decision coming here even though the majority of Walla Walla eateries are 4-5 stars :-) There was only one street parking spot and we got it. Watching others leaving we noticed they are even parked in the lot across the street. Wow Claretta's. The hostess greeted us immediately and even offered to seat us since everyone was so busy. The place is decorated like grandma got ahold of it. Very old Victorian and like a home. Hubby had his bowl of clam chowder that was filled to the rim and in a minute disappeared to pictured level. He said it is delicious!!!! He's been craving it so that's awesome. He also got the smoky meatloaf sandwich which he liked so much that he is taking the 2nd half with us even though we are driving back to Cali with a stop in Oregon. I got the 2 egg meal (O'Briens and lightly toasted white). I HATE any part of the white of the egg to be runny so I always say over medium with dry whites. I messed up adding the extra info and my yolks were cooked thoroughly so I couldn't dip my toast :-( It was all good though and we would eat here again and recommend. I've been to Clarette's a number of times over the years. Their breakfasts are pretty good, except for the corned beef which is canned. Recently, we went for dinner and I ordered meatloaf. Now meatloaf is a very easy dish to make as in I've taught 14 year olds how to make it. Their meatloaf was canned and reminded me more of dog food. I don't even know where you'd get canned meatloaf! So, try their breakfasts, especially the omelets but avoid dinner. read more

I'm glad to see they're still busy during the pandemic, this is our favorite place to eat when we visit Walla Walla. We visit 3-4 times per school year (we live in seattle and have a student at Whitman) My favorite breakfast is the GF pancakes with a side of vegan sausage (Beyond Meat brand) with Seattle's Best coffee. Our waitress, Vicky was the first we noticed. Immediately, she waited on us once we sat down. I haven't had service like that in years. Outstanding service! We both ordered breakfast meals that was outstanding. Eggs were cooked to exactly how we asked. My husband is a new fan of French toast. Clarette's has been in my family for more than 40 years. Although my grandmother, Clarette sold it years ago it has still always maintained the same quality and taste. My favorite has always been the strawberry crepes with the Klicker berries. But really there is no menu item you can go wrong with and the customer service is top notch! Stick with the tried and true breakfast, which I've had before, and still would again. THAT being said, our dinner experience did NOT go so smoothly. Everything started out fine, we were seated promptly and given menus, we sat in the sunroom portion along the north side - all booth & windows. Since it was evening, that didn't really impact our stay. There was a LARGE college group seated in the main room adjacent to us, their order had already been taken, they had not yet been served. Having noticed that our waters had been served, our waitress took our drink order, brought that, and was gone a WHILE, presumably helping out with the large party (15-20 head.) It was a bit of a wait, but she did finally take our order and mentioned that the large group's food had not yet been plated. At over half-hour post-ordering, my husband begin to get a bit antsy. When pressed, the waitress made half-hearted attempts to make excuse. When past the 45-minute mark, he finally stated that "we would just be leaving" when we had to flag her down. She promised that it was coming up to the pass and would bring it up, which she did - his plate. When I saw it had arrived without steam emanating from the plate, I knew we were in trouble. He will eat nothing served below boiling lava hot. Upon bringing mine, she noticed his at the edge of the table and asked what was wrong. Before he could begin, I stated that there was not even any steam from the food, and we needed it heated REALLY HOT. My six cheese ravioli with chicken was a bit thin in the sauce, and the sliced chicken breast was pale enough to appear boiled. But I was going to make the best of it. When she brought back his food, still not steaming, I knew we were done, as anticipated. I asked to just have mine boxed to go, & he declined his when she asked if he wanted it boxed too - negatory - "even though" she "wasn't going to charge," but nah. No charge for failed meal, or drinks, still 14 bucks with tax for plate of ravioli, sauce, and anemic chicken. Oh, but there were the mini/tiny cups of chowder (app course) which were pleasantly enjoyable. And their DARK black coffee was amazingly smooth and not bitter, even without cream, and I am a devotee! Damn fine cup of coffee... So overall, I guess it's a draw. Go for breakfast, skip Friday night or probably dinner for that matter, as it was only just after 6 when we first arrived. read more

So not happy..... I love Walla Walla for the food and wine. But tonight i took my 18 month old son to eat. First we weren't greeted with kindness, more like irritation. The server proceeded to be annoyed when i asked for a high chair, was immediately asked if i was ready to order which for me being a server myself I like to give my customers a good 2-5 mins to look over the menu. Now the best part is she NEVER checked on us in the middle of our meal! Sat there with an empty glass from the time i received my food to the time we left.... I even had cold fries and the server seemed extremely annoyed by that! Like wth... Wasn't asked about possible dessert, nothing just the bill and "have a good night" All in all my second experience there makes me wonder if ill ever be going back for dinner. read more

While visiting town on a Sunday we looked for a place for the family to eat and stumbled across Clarette's. The restaurant looks like a house and comfortable setting. Customers were called by name around us as our server came and took our order. She was very nice and suggested the Dumpling soup (which is AMAZING!). Our drinks came in large glasses that you don't see in restaurants much anymore, we couldnt even finish them. Our Soup and salad arrived at the table quickly and as I mentioned the Dumpling Soup was divine! I could have just devoured all they had made. Our dinner came out just as our waitress had cleared our plates. We looked at each other and wondered how we were going to eat it all. Son had popcorn chicken. It was juicy and filling. He ended up with a to go box. I had a cheeseburger that I had been craving for a couple days. We eat a lot of chicken at home... It was perfect! Hubby had the chicken fried steak and it smelled heavenly. It tasted even better. The sausage in the gravy was big bites and there was enough gravy to cover the steak and potatos! We were stuffed full when our waitress came over and talked about deserts.. oh man. We will be visiting again! Great service. Great food. The kid gives it a 10 out of 5 stars. Ok, this is about a three and a half star diner. BUT, two extra stars for being so darned friendly. After a few days of wine tasting and fine dining, we wanted a good, basic meal. Clarette's did a super job of that. Breakfast for dinner is one of my favorite treats (for example). Good hash browns. Eggs over easy to perfection. While we were eating, the weather really started to change. A HUGE thunder and lightening storm was blowing over. Winds up to 60 mph. We had been unaware of extreme storm warnings all day. Having walked from our hotel, we'd have been soaked and possibly zapped by the lightening on the way back. One of the owners graciously gave one of our party a lift back to the hotel so we could get our car for the rest of us. Living in a hole like Olympia WA, you just don't see such small town friendliness like that any more. I have re-newed hope for our country!!!
