I had crispy potatoes upon the recommendation of our server instead of the usual hash browns. It was good though a bit too salty to taste. My favorite sandwich made the way it should be! Ham, turkey, American and Swiss cheeses dipped in egg batter and cooked to perfection. Amazing strawberry freezer jam is the perfect condiment for this amazing morsel of heaven. I got a side of fries, which I gave to my son. I had to start this review with the sandwich, because I believe one should save the best for first. Now I want to focus on the atmosphere. The restaurant is so bright and airy with really cool light fixtures. Not the Claire's I remember from my childhood. So bright and sunny. Also, we had a wonderful waitress who was so sweet and took great care care of us. My son had the kid's spaghetti - and the portion was very generous for my 11 year old's appetite. He loved it so much that he wore it all over his face. All in all, it was the excellent food I remember from my childhood in a modern setting! Can't wait to go back! read more

I have been going to Claires since 1990. The new owners have screwed up this restaurant so bad. I have returned 3 times since the new owners. I will not try it again. The last dinner was a mess. I ordered a well Manhattan and a prime rib dip. My nephew (8 years old) ordered french toast. First my Manhattan was in a tiny well glass (on the rocks). I was charged 12.00 for a well Manhattan that was two sips. My primerib dip was fine for 10.99. My nephew as soon as we got home started throwing up. It took one hour and 3 huge throwups to get the food poisoning out I felt horrible!!!! No more. 12 dollar shitty drink and food poisoning. Yeah Claires! Oh boy. This was a brunch disaster. First, the restaurant smells funny - like bad disinfectant and feet. But, we were hungry and it seemed welcoming enough. Unfortunately, it was not actually at all. Drink service was slow and disjointed. The food - that arrived- was mediocre, cold and took a real long time. One of the meals was not served and it took manager intervention to have it cooked. The manager never apologized and blamed the server quite inelegantly. They promised to take it off my bill, but did not; I ended up paying for it because this whole ordeal took so long and I had to go and couldn't deal with the bumbling to get it removed. Hard pass. Go to any of the other decent spots in Edmonds. Claire's is not worth the calories, time or frustration. #fail read more

Amazing deterioration, such a shame! It is with much sadness that I report that this once-charming Edmonds icon of days past has under its new ownership become an absolute horror show. First, I need to say that I have eaten there from time to time for, literally, decades. I had been in several times since the new owners took over and kept giving them the benefit of the doubt, hoping things would improve, but they did not. In fact, they got worse. Much worse. Obvious cost-cutting food quality shortcuts, combines with price hikes, huge drop in server professionalism standards . . . the list is long. Today marked the end of my hope for improvement, and an end to my long time patronage of this establishment, sadly. In short, the new owners, an immigrant couple from Asia, are just NOT nice people nor do they understand (or, more likely, do and simply reject) customary American customer service practices and expectations. A late morning breakfast with a relatively minor, somewhat routine service issue escalated into a complete disaster. Here is what happened . . . This morning when we entered we stood to be seated. The restaurant was slightly busy, but far less than one would expect during a Christmas season Saturday morning with so many people out and about in downtown Edmonds. There was no one else in line waiting and the hostess saw us but ignored us. No greeting, nothing. She looked away and started talking to another idle staffer and finally we had to interrupt their personal convo to ask to be seated, which she did--grudgingly. Waters were quite late in coming and we waited and waited and waited for our orders to be taken. They were, finally, and the wait for our food was excessive. We had to remind the server--who was not the most hygienic person and whose work performance would be much improved with regular showering WITH soap. Food finally came, I had ordered a drink that did not come, naturally. I reminded the server, still didn't come. My friend visited the (not clean) ladies' room and yet AGAIN reminded the server. She finally brought said drink -- just a fountain soda, nothing special or from the bar -- and when she did complained rudely and in an abrupt manner about how she was being forced to also wait on their lounge. Claire's used to serve a memorable, tasty homemade jelly with their toast and that went away with the new owners. Instead, with my toast today I found two low quality, randomly selected portion control containers, one blueberry and one orange marmalade--neither of which I like. The new owners are also too cheap to leave an assortment on the table, so now I had to contend with asking for different flavors of jelly for my now cold toast. Between that and the nasty server I asked to speak to the owner. I simply wanted to ask for a different server and to provide feedback on my disappointment about their elimination of the better jelly and share with her our experience in being seated. The owner, the wife of a couple, came over and was clearly on high defense mode the second the server informed her, with accompanying eye roll, that I wanted a word. Instead of calmly listening to my issues, she immediately started interrupting in a shrill, fast-paced, heavily accented, angry stream of words. She interrupted me repeatedly and she kept telling me I was wrong, announcing to me: "You CAN'T say that! We up 20% since we buy this!" I was shocked, pretty much any competent restaurant manager would have simply replaced the rude/smelly server and listened to the feedback about the service and menu changes--ESPECIALLY from a customer with such a lengthy patronage there. Not her. Though we had barely touched it, our meal was ruined. This hysterical, jabbering new owner had sealed it. I told her we were done with her and with Claire's and we proceeded to gather our coats and four-year-old. Yes, it was THAT bad! Her husband, to his credit, who seemed much more reasonable, tried to de-escalate things and calm her down, but his wife was too far gone, she was off on a tear. As we gathered our things she began to depart and she continued jabbering: "You pay! You still pay! You hafta PAY!!" Fine, I just want the hell out of here, I said and walked to the register where I placed my credit card on the counter. She instantly scooped up the card and instead of simply swiping it and ending the drama so I could leave, she held it, waved it at me and proceeded to shrilly jabber at me a litany of things that, in her view, I could not say about Claire's. I repeated to ask her to run my card and to let me get the hell OUT of her pathetic cesspool of a restaurant. She continued to shrilly jabber, getting louder as she worked herself up more and more. At that point she threatened me wit the POLICE, even though she was holding MY CREDIT CARD, waving it at me. I FINALLY got it back and made my exit from this once enjoyable Edmonds tradition, turned third world hellhole. read more

Sent it back and got the poached eggs the same way again by now my husband has finished his breakfast so I tried the crepes another bad idea. They were heavy and greasy. I sent it back and asked to have it taken off bill. So I had no breakfast. They manager or owner never came over to apologize for the really bad breakfast. Will not go back. We haven't been here in years and we keep coming back hoping something has changed, for the better, sadly it hasn't.... Maybe I need to lend these fine folks a hand?? So, it's a special event when we all get cleaned up and head out for an AM meal. Service here has always been spotty, at best, last weekend was no different as a vacant/dirty table that was being held for us, took 10-15 minutes just to get cleaned up, with no one else in line behind us! After being seated, water, coffee, tomato juice, hot cocoa the usual suspects were ordered and it took a while to get delivered, item by item. "Olde Smoky" as I'll call our waitress/cashier/host, full-on with blue hair, cigarette smoke infused clothing and raspy voice, she efficiently took our order and delivered everything once the kitchen spit our dishes out, and I do mean spit.... Hash "browns" were called that only in name, as the potatoes were a soggy chilled mess, lightly grilled on the outside, looked vacantly pale, tasteless and forgettable. My Country Benedict, sub the ham for a sausage patty, was lukewarm and the "hollandaise" was missing something, oh, I know, f-l-a-v-o-r!! Others in our party were less than enchanted. I'm really disappointed. My husband and I have been coming here since 1995. As we grew older we shared this place with our son, extended family and friends. When people came to town we would take them to Claire's in the cute little town of Edmonds. We noticed the last few times. The employees weren't as happy, the food quality was getting worse. Today we went in. I didn't recognize any of the staff, an older Asian lady seating the customers. No waitress came to our table. finally the lady who seated us comes by and we told her. Nobody has come, what seemed like 10 minutes to even ask if we wanted something to drink. We asked if there was a change in owners. She said yes. We left. My parents & all of us kids (including my sister, her husband, and their daughter who travel to Edmonds from Paris to see my parents) used to like Claire's. Our most recent visit (June 22, 2016) will probably be our last. Apparently there are new owners, and the food reflects that. The portions are so small, and the quality of food is poor. The fish-n-chips, which used to be a family favorite, are fishy with minimal fries and NO COLESLAW! Isn't Coleslaw a given with any fish meal? I literally have had diarrhea since we ate there last. The Monte Christo was the saddest excuse for a Monte Christo I've ever seen. And we were so excited to see it on the menu, like a relic from old-fashioned diners of the past! I don't know if it was the cook on shift or what, but it was this thick, eggy slab of bread and turkey with no sign of cheese. I learned to make these sandwiches, and there should be 3 slices of bread layered with ham & turkey & cheese and LIGHTLY dipped in an egg batter and sauteed. The rubbery mass tossed on the plate was disgusting both visually and internally. Gordon Ramsey would have a hay-day with the hell this restaurant has become. Oh, and by the way, for $12.99 a 3-piece fish-n-chip plate came without coleslaw AND each of the 3 fish pieces were fingerlings ... a two bite tiny chunk of stinky, fishy fish. We ordered the "Country Benedict Our Way" and four pancakes and it was very delicious. The pancake was very fluffy and soft in texture and did not stick at all as I ate. I'm not usually one for hash browns, but I was extremely satisfied with what I ordered. The hash browns were very crispy yet soft on the inside. It was the perfect breakfast. The atmosphere was very welcoming. The service was also great as the waitress would swing by often, checking if we needed anything else frequently. Well do I have the best destination for you. If you are looking to wait 5 minutes before being addressed or greeted. When they finally decide to grace you with their presence. They automatic making you feel like it was an inconvenience for them to do so. If you are in no rush at all and have nothing better to do for the day. You could always enjoy the company of the people who came with you and engage in long conversations with out worrying about something silly like your food coming in a timely fashion to interrupt you and your company. I personally used to opportunity to play video games with my boyfriend. When you food finally does come you be thrilled to know that the staff is physic and knows what you want better then you do, making sure they overcharge for this. My server heard add soup instead of " i would like soup instead of fries with my meal" which is an option. If your taste buds are deadened or just non - existent the food will be up your ally whether undercooked, over cooked, bland, tasteless or someone just got way to creative with spices you be happy to know that they serve stale or past date items here. All for outrages prices. in all seriousness rude hostess, bad services, horrible food, and ridiculous prices for what amounts to unappetizing diner food. I think everyone has lost their friggin minds. For one, I've never had bad service. Sure it's been slow at times but there aren't very many places where my fiance and I can get a delicious meal for under $20. It's cheap and easy but I've never had anything at their restaurant I wouldn't want to eat again and again. I just went there today for the billionth time and guess what? it was still delicious. Their Monte Cristo is heaven as is their Turkey Pot Pie, Oreo Cheesecake, American Omelet, "The Gobbler," I could go on and on. That place has been there a long time and it would have fallen under like so many if there wasn't something keeping people coming back. It's called good food at a good price. Wow - you guys are harsh! We ate here today when the chicer restaurants of Edmonds were mobbed by Rick Steves' fans. I had an awesome spinach salad with bacon and mushrooms (a little too much raspberry dressing but not a deal-breaker) and Chris had "The Gobbler" - a turkey/mashed potato plate made with the house-roasted turkey which was completely delicious. Our waitress was super friendly and courteous. We even recommended it to another couple who were caught standing outside a restaurant that had closed at 3 (um, note to owners, if Rick Steves is doing free lectures all day in Edmonds, stay open if you're smart. Haven't gone into a restaurant for a year but this place is nicely spaced for Covid. I need to visit this place more often. This restaurant has been around for ever but it so great. Now I know there are alot of Claire's regulars here in the city of Edmonds I'm sure they really like the place, but when it comes to diner food, you can do much better (and for around the same price) than Claire's. I've only eaten here a handful of times, mostly for the sole fact I was craving greasy breakfast food and was nowhere near anyplace better. My boyfriend and I also call this place Claire's Panties. Claire's has been disgusting for a long time and it still is. The salads always have a pool of water under them (I do like the thousand dressing though). The turkey pot pie is large slabs of turkey in a bowl with a giant cracker on top. The deserts used to be good a few years ago, someone has clearly dropped the ball. I relize it's a diner....but I'd rather eat at Denny's. I've often thought the Seattle area is seriously lacking American food. Sometimes I crave the fantastic diner food and atmosphere from eastern Pennsylvania where I'm originally from, and until now I have struggled to satisfy that. Claire's is exactly what the doctor ordered when I'm in Edmonds, and my hometown diners are calling my name. The BLT is exactly what I want when I need a BLT. No BS just nice toasted bread, mayo, lettuce, tomato, and some perfectly cooked bacon. A new one for me is the Monte Christo. It's not something I'd see at the diners back east, but I had to try it. It was outstanding! My husband is a fan and connoisseur of the Monte Christo, and he let me try his once. It was so wonderful I got it myself last night. They served it with strawberry freezer jam, a slice of perfectly ripe cantaloupe, and sherbet. The only thing I think I would do differently is request extra strawberry jam. The sandwich was wonderful. It was the grilled style Monte Christo, grilled on all sides! It had two kinds of cheese (Swiss and American) and a good helping of ham and a nice big slab of their own roasted turkey. My husband even went so far as to say that Claire's Monte Christo is superior to the one Charlie's serves on Broadway in Seattle. My husband got the turkey dinner this time and he said it was pretty good with a good sized helping of Claire's own roasted turkey. The gravy looked like it had sausage in it and we thought it seemed homemade. It was very tasty. He thought the dressing was a bit too moist, but the mashed potatoes were good. He also had some potato cheese soup to start. I can't be sure it was homemade, but it was extremely yummy. It had a nice thick consistency with a good dose of cheese and pureed potato. It went wonderfully with lots of black pepper. For dessert I got a slice of strawberry cream pie. It was FABULOUS! The cream was nice and fluffy and tasted like fresh whipped cream. It was sitting atop a nice fresh homemade strawberry pie filling. The crust left something to be desired, but the filling made up for it to me. I just ate the filling and left some of the crust. It was divine! As far as service goes, we had a great waitress. She was attentive and friendly. After we got our food, she came over to check on us twice while we ate. If you're looking for a great diner with good old American food, come to Claire's. It won't disappoint. If you're looking for a snobby Seattle bistro, this is NOT THE PLACE. read more

Service is slow and super forgetful. We waited about 25 minutes to even get the option of ordering coffee and getting menus. We then got to order about 10 minutes later and it was a full 45 minutes after that that we got our food. Let me just say that the 80 minutes we waited to get our food was the best experience we had at this dinning establishment. The food was cold and very greasy. Our waitress never even came back after we got our food. I had to flag down "Olde Smokey" to get our bill. Every business when it changes hands, seems to experience that-with all the negative reviews they've had since . They retained the old menu-and am happy to say that Claire's is still like the old reliable with diner style food. My first stop of four nights in Edmonds because of one menu item: the Monte Cristo. Claire's is not at all glamorous which I find this a little refreshing in this small town of high end chic. If you're looking for high end, go elsewhere. If you're looking for small town comfort food with honest and pleasant workers, this is the place to go. The food: it's hard to find the perfect Monte Cristo and while the deep fried bread was spot on and the turkey was perfect, something was bland about the cheese. I thought the plastic container of raspberry jam was disappointing but it's what's I should expect there. When I return for a third time for business around Edmonds, I will come back for my third time to Claire's because it's just a comfortable place to be. read more

C'mon you guys! It's a freakin' diner!--older folks go here! This place is great. If you sit in the restaurant part (not the bar), and order breakfast, any time of day, you'll hit a winner. I've never found it dirty or sticky. Coffee is yuk, but oh well. It's not a dining establishment, it's a diner, which is what is refreshing about it. It doesn't have the latest food trends. It just has basic stuff, think upscale Denny's. I've always had friendly service, whether I was with 2 people or 15. It's a great place to have a huge group meet. (I've never met "olde smokey"--snicker). My kids love just getting a huge plate of eggs, bacon and hashed browns. I've been there about 30 times, I'll go back. And I'm a coffee snob. The waitress was nice but while reviewing the bill she yelled out " I only work here". I've been going there with my family for years but it's a end of an era. Never again.
