It had been a while since we've been to Rise & Shine so we stopped by last week around 4:45pm on a weekday to pick up some banh mi on our way home from errands. Got a space easily in their small parking lot. Something about the vibe felt off as soon as walked in. It was very quiet and a couple were eating in but that was all. I don't know how to explain it but it's something I have felt before in other places, just not here. We ordered two grilled pork banh mi (they were out of grilled chicken) to go. The person that took our order was nice and the order didn't take long to get. We took the sandwiches home and ate them and they were okay, not as good as I remember them from before. Giving 4 stars because I do want to support small businesses and see them do well. We wanted to try Yeh Yeh's to be honest (but it was closed on a Sunday), so stopped by here. This is a little bakery/cafe area that sells buns, banh mi, and surprisingly, some noodle soups like pho and bun bo hue. Tried both a banh mi and a bun bo hue (which I am very pleasantly surprised they had). The bun bo hue decent/hit most of the elements I wanted (they didn't have pork blood which I don't enjoy anyways so not a problem). I wasn't a real fan of the banh mi to be honest; it tasted more fusion to me than authentic (had pickled slice onions and was sliced diagonally for style), so I may stick to the downtown delis. Best banh mi in town! I've been wanting to try this place for a couple of months, and I'm so glad I finally did. The ambiance is very casual and welcoming. During rush hour the parking gets full pretty quickly. It seems to be run by an Asian family, and they were some of the kindest, sweetest people I've ever met in the food industry. There were 8 of us, and the owner kindly brought extra chairs and pushed tables together so we could all sit comfortably. He brought us iced water, and when we asked for water without ice, he smiled so warmly and immediately replaced it. I ordered the grilled pork banh mi, and it was hands down the freshest banh mi I've ever had. The bread was perfectly crispy, and every ingredient tasted incredibly fresh. I also ordered a Vietnamese coffee it was a bit too sweet for my taste, but it paired really well with the banh mi. They also offer bakery items. I tried the ube pastry, which was very enjoyable. Someone at our table ordered the veg pho, and I tasted the broth it was delicious. I'll definitely be trying it next time, although it'll be hard to choose between the pho and the banh mi! read more

I got the Pho and it was made with a well balanced flavor that was not overpowered in any direction. Theres plenty of indoor seating and space for you to enjoy eating inside. Which contrast well with the veggies and bread. Their bread is some of the best I've had! Nice and crisp, but your mouth doesn't have to recover afterwards. Easy to miss store on the side of Highway 99 unless you're actively looking for it. Yellow building past the Public Storage. There's a small parking lot but many people place to-go orders so traffic in and out of the lot is constant. It's nice to have a banh mi spot closer to home than our go-to in Lynnwood. Also snagged boba because it was available and there weren't too many comments around it. Grilled Pork and Fried Egg Banh Mi - they do not skimp on ingredients here and each sandwich is a very filling meal. Prices are pretty fair, falling in the middle of the banh mi price range I've experienced. Definitely add a fried egg to whatever banh mi you opt for because it enhances everything. As a bakery, I believe they make their baguettes in house and they're fluffier (more airy) than usual. However, this somewhat conflicts with the toasted, crispy aspect. It comes down to preference but I lean towards a more crispy baguette (the fluffy was a nice change though). Black Milk Tea w/ Boba - firstly, I guess they don't actually have regular boba and instead substitute crystal boba. Makes sense because it would be a hassle to prepare boba everyday when it's not a big specialty, but I was expecting regular boba when looking at the menu so slightly misled. Besides that, the drink was actually solid, more on the creamier side of milk teas (tastes like creamer). Lots of ice though and not entirely sure you can order less ice. While I'd still prefer an actual boba spot, this is a nice fallback option for milk tea if you're already in the area because there aren't many decent spots towards Shoreline. read more

I went here for a quick lunch that is very takeout friendly. On a Friday it was not busy at all, but they make the sandwich to order so do expect a small wait for it. We got the special combo sandwich, pork belly sandwich, Vietnamese coffee, and pandan cream bun. Total was about $32 after tax which is decent but could be better value versus the comparables in the area. The combo sandwich is pretty good. It tasted like the usual banh mi fixings except in sandwich form. I prefer it this way so there is more filling that you can eat per bite and it hurts the jaw less from the super crunchiness of the bread. The pork belly sandwich is very flavorful but the pork belly has like 90% fat. The Vietnamese coffee is strong and the pandan cream bun was a nice, affordable sweet to finish off as a dessert. 4.5 stars overall but I rounded down because the combo sandwich on website and recent menus were $8.50 but today it was $10, so it was a bit of a small sticker shock. read more

Started with fresh rolls which had a fried skin inside (nice texture contrast). Hubby tried their pork chop plate which was the special. He was not a fan of how sweet it was, I agreed that it could use more salt and aromatics (fish sauce and lemongrass for ex). I got the BBH which I requested spicy, they were forth coming and notified me that they were out of pork blood. The broth could have used more salt and funk but overall had a good savory umami. Their parking lot gets a little crowded during lunch rush and wait times could possibly (and usually does) get up to 20-30 mins, but that's just a testament as to how much everyone loves the sandwiches here. I get the Egg Sandwich, and it's usually runny or Hard I think they just do whatever but I don't mind! There's seating too for which they serve Pho and other dishes like rice or salads (but again, it gets crowded so avoid lunch time!!) Honestly don't get how anyone could have a problem with staff, Out of the hundreds of reviews I've read they clearly know what they're doing! I used to eat banh mi all the time when I lived near Little Saigon in San Jose. After moving to Michigan, I was met with very Americanized banh mi - ones on French baguettes with the most generic "beef" or "pork" as options. No cha lua, no bi heo, heck, not even pate as a fatty base? No thanks! I had no idea that the Seattle-area had a good banh mi culture until I decided visit Rise & Shine for lunch while my car was getting repaired nearby. This bakery not only serves excellent sandwiches, but they also have interesting baked goodies (Pandan coconut! Ube cream! Thai Tea bun!?). I didn't pick any up since I had purchased some from another bakery earlier in the day, but I'll have to visit again just for the buns. Special Combo Sandwich ($10) - Firstly, I'm not sure why they cut the sandwich diagonally and put it in a takeout container instead of serving it in paper. I guess it's just a stylistic choice? At any rate, this sandwich includes three types of meat, including gio thu headcheese that's gelatinous, peppery and snappy, with rich umami, slices of cha lua, bouncy with great meaty fish sauce umami, and thinly sliced ham. In terms of veggies, they have the classic combination of pickled carrot and daikon with cucumber and cilantro. When ordering, they ask about the inclusion of jalapeno. Even when added, it's only a couple of slices that add a mild spiciness to the sandwich. The base of the sandwich includes sweet and creamy mayo and a super umami fatty boost from pate. Everything is on a baguette that doesn't have a super crackly crust (which I prefer) with good chewiness inside. I haven't had a bahn mi this good since moving from San Jose. It's pretty small for being $10 so it feels almost not worth it. It's probably like 1-2 inches smaller than your average banh mi from other places. The bakery's location alongside the Pacific Highway is not attractive, in line with the characterless tire shops, abandoned or half populated strip malls, and storage buildings. However, the bakery is perhaps a repurposed storage building because the wall alongside the highway is entirely without windows. I got their veggie pho, and it was quite delicately executed, with a gentle broth and delicious fried tofu and greens. I sat outside as the sun was shining, and in the winter when the sun shines for a minute I do like to catch rays. As the traffic growled by, I took advantage of their sole little table by the entryway. Was it pleasant? No. However, I did enjoy the pho -- a little mental escape from the death landscape of capitalist concrete rape of the Pacific Northwest by settlers who call this "progress" and indigenous cultures "savage". I will say Rise and Shine is hard to spot if you don't know where it is as i passed the spot several times before finding it. I ordered the 3 Grilled Pork (the best) Bahn Mi to go. I will say the bread this time was not as soft as the ones brought to the party but hopefully it's just a one time thing. The ratio of meat, veggies and sauce were perfect. Pricing was great compared to some Bahn Mi places. Inside was has decent seating if you want to dine in. I think they serve other dishes too besides Bahn Mi. Small parking lot in the back. In short Holy cow this place gets packed! Easy to see why once you try a sandwich. In long It's a funky old building with kind of a weird long dining room right on 99, then an upstairs that must be...their office? I dunno, but you walk right by the staircase when you come in. It's chained off and marked "private." :-) Before you come in, though, you're lucky if you score parking. I would have left but I had to wait for people to turn around before I could turn around. That took so long that a spot opened up. Score! There's a long line of tables by the windows, and a big bustling counter area off to your left. They have a couple TVs, maybe showing the ballgame with the sound off. They do run specials, and this weekend they had a vermicelli bowl and a pho. I suppose they probably run variations of those pretty regularly, but as a first-timer, I really wanted to check out a sandwich. The service here is right on point, though the crowds get heavy. I was here at 2:15 on a Sunday afternoon, more than an hour after lunch would have died down, I figured. And like I said, the parking lot (and every other area, too) was a zoo. They got my order within a couple minutes, and within a couple more minutes they were out clearing tables. Couple minutes more, there's my sandwich and my coffee. And that's the most important part--the sandwich is amazing. Great flaky crunchy bread, cold cuts bursting with flavor, nice fresh crunchy veg and nice bright flavors from the mayo. My family and I are big fans of Pho, and we enjoy trying different small restaurants specifically for their Pho. We settled on this place and tried their brisket, steak, and beef shank soup and their combination Ban Mi sandwich. I was disappointed they did not have any bean sprouts, but I don't feel with that missing ingredient effected the flavor. The soup was presented well with all ingredients bowled and notably did not have the usual basil leaves that most other Pho dishes have. However, there was another herb, which I believe was thinly sliced lemon grass and provided a different dynamic to the traditional Pho experience. Overall, the Pho broth was phenomenal. I tasted it before adding any Hoisin Sauce or Sriracha, and loved it so much I opted to not change the flavor profile. The amount of meat was perfect. Yet, I would have desired a larger serving of noodles. We rated the Pho a solid 9/10. The Ban Mi sandwich was nicely presented. The sandwich itself had a good ratio of filling to bread. The bread looked as though it was baked in house. Very crunchy and chewy exterior and soft interior bread. It may have been made the evening before, not fresh but better than average bread. The sauce had a good spice level. The vegetables were fresh. The meat was a mystery as we couldn't quite tell what the meat "combo" consisted of. One of the meats had a significant amount of gelatinous texture that turned off one family member. Overall, we rated the flavor of the sandwich a 7, but due to the bread and meats we give it a final 5/10. I'd recommend ordering a sandwich with a single meat that matches your preference.
