We came to City Kitchen in Bakery Square for my 45th birthday. We wanted to eat outside, but that was iladvised due to the smog from the Canadian Wildfire that had sat in Pittsburgh for a couple of days. Needless to say, the indoor seating is quite nice also. This place is very unique, seemingly four restaurants in one. I was determined to try something a little different, and while they have many sandwich options, I went with a Poke bowl that included salmon, ahi tuna, and shrimp tempura. It was amazing. A bunch of family members gathered here after a funeral service on a Thursday night and found that it was a perfect spot to come together to grab food as there's a little bit of everything for everybody and beverage. They have a lot of outdoor dining space available, which is great and they have a large green area that #MIN kids were running around on. They were watching the world soccer game amongst other things. There are several different kitchen options to order from everything is done through the app. There is a parking garage nearby, which I highly recommend parking in as parking is super tight in this area. There are multiple other businesses here and dining experiences, which is great because you can walk around and experience them all if you want to. It is super loud outside, so it's very hard to hear people even just sitting across from you and having a conversation. We ordered from the City kitchen and chose the beef Bulgogi eggrolls to start with. Only two come in order which I was disappointed by so we ended up ordering two orders, but the food was good. Later on in the evening, I also ordered the coconut curry stir fry with chicken. Definitely a hearty dish with great flavor and there are noodles in this. I honestly wish that there would've been more of the curry in it because the noodles soaked up everything so there was really no additional broth or anything in the bowl. read more

A large group of us came around 7pm on Tuesday and were able to get a big table for all of us. There were a few stragglers who were able to grab extra chairs from the corner. I like how you just order via QR code at the table. It makes separate checks a breeze which is really helpful for a big group. Their menu for both food and drinks is quite extensive and it can be a little overwhelming trying to decide what to get. My spicy ramen came in a huge bowl and was really good. City Kitchen is a great place for groups. There is plenty of seating, and so many options to choose from on the menu. My personal favorite is the Tom Kha Ramen. It is a little spicy but (not too much) and overall delicious. You can order from a QR code on the table for minimal interaction with the staff, although they do come around occasionally to make sure your food came out correctly, clear plates, and ask if you need a box. Got the coconut curry chicken and the meat was inedible. Just the muscle of the chicken. Clearly using every part to cut costs, but should be embarrassing for the chef's soul. This was the third chance I gave this establishment after terrible poke bowls and even worse lamb burger. Nothing here is enjoyable and its hardly edible. Get a little pride in that kitchen please. We come a few times a year and usually have a great experience. We came on a sunny Saturday to celebrate my octogenarian mother's birthday and had a blast. We all loved the food. City Kitchen is a great option if you're not quite sure what you're in the mood for, as their menu is extensive and covers just about everything one could be craving. My guest and I opted for some comforting, warm carbs in the cold weather. She went for some ramen, and I chose the fettuccine alfredo with chicken. Her food was brought out before mine, and she finished it just as mine was brought to the table, so needless to say, it was full of flavor, warmth, and comforting goodness on a cold day. I, however, didn't love my alfredo. I found that the sauce didn't have the richness or flavor that one expects to find in an alfredo sauce. The chicken was very juicy, though. I put in a request for a refill and a to-go box (all orders are placed via web), but neither were ever brought to our table so the service left something to be desired. Overall, I will continue to go back to City Kitchen. Though this time may not have been our best experience, the menu offerings change frequently enough that it is worth giving it more chances to shine. read more

We met up with some friends here for dinner. We loved the green space for kids to run around while the adults are food. Ordering is easy via the QR codes and service was pretty fast. I started with an order of potato skins as an appetizer to share, but ended up eating 3 of the 4 because they were pretty small. They were good, but felt pretty expensive. I had the pulled pork grilled cheese sandwich with a side salad . The salad was fresh and diverse but I wasn't a fan of the pulled pork. It was somewhat slimy with very little texture, almost like it was so tender there was no substance. Overall a decent experience though. read more

This was a happening place during the week! We came for dinner on Friday, and the outdoor vibe was so chill. Kids were playing on the lawn, adults were sitting at the tables with a DJ playing music. I got the Kalua bowl from Shaka. It was a good portion. I liked that they could do half greens and half rice. The pork though was a bit too salty and not quite what I expected for Kalua pork. Food came quickly and the staff were friendly and helpful. This is a good spot for groups and parties. Free garage parking is also a plus. read more

I've come here a few times more recently and had a much better experience. The service is pretty quick and all of the runners are friendly and helpful. They also sometimes have a host seating tables which may be helpful with managing the flow better. I still think some of their prices are outrageous ($6.50 for an IC Light is criminal!!!) but they do have good happy hour deals. City Kitchen consists of four restaurants--Shaka (Hawaiian foods), SOMI (Asian foods), Elevate (American foods), and Charred (gourmet burgers)--plus a full bar and sometimes an additional restaurant that briefly pops up. Customers may purchase foods and beverages from one or more restaurants in one order. For years, I have eaten meals at City Kitchen, and I have ordered foods from all four restaurants. I sit at a table of my choosing, and I use my cell-phone camera to access the restaurants' menus through a QR code on my table. During my most recent visit, I could not enter coupon codes into the app, so I had to order face-to-face at the kitchen's cash register. A few employees spent much time figuring out how to apply the coupons. Customers who want takeout or delivery may use the Toast website or app. The employees always bring my foods and beverages to my table in about 10 minutes--fast! From Shaka, I enjoyed the Hawaiian Surf 'n Turf (shrimp and chicken) with mixed greens and brown rice. From SOMI, I enjoyed the vegetable-shrimp pho, beef ramen, bibimbap with bulgogi beef, and tom kha ramen (very nice broth!). I came back to City Kitchen with another friend to watch another Steeler game. When the weather is cooperating, I think City Kitchen is one of the best places to watch a sports game. The ambiance is great and I like how you can just pick a table and order off of your phone as you please. Even though everything is ordered by phone, there was still amble staff checking on tables to make sure the patrons were satisfied. I really enjoy spending time at City Kitchen. Went there Friday. Outside dining was hopping. Looked like so much fun DJ and a big screen TV. We ordered didn't take long. Had kids buttered noodles 10$ sat in pool of water, chicken fingers and fries extremely salty. Miso gi ger salad with chicken. Couldn't taste ant ginger and the chicken was not appealing. Went to ladies room, egg, water didn't work no soap and no paper towels just the hand dryer. Went to family restroom to wash my hands and it smelled bad toilet was clogged, but did have soap and water. Very disappointed. 80$ and it just was not up to expectations!! read more

If you catch it on a good day , it's great and on a bad day not as good. Little pricey but there are some hidden gems. Try the spicy Asian fries. Forgetting name of the restaurant. There are always at least 4 doing their residencies here. Cool run group ok Thursday from Fleetfeet across the street. They have a good craft beer selection usually. City Kitchen in Bakery Square has a pretty cool concept. One chef & 4 different types of cuisine. Shaka has Hawaiian fusion. Somi is Vietnamese cuisine. Charred is American bar food. Elevate is elevated comfort foods. The area is seat yourself, and you can easily order with a QR code, and waiters bring you your food. It's quick and easy. My husband and I both ordered off the Somi menu. Everything we ordered was flavorful, but it wasn't anything special. There are a lot of restaurants in Pittsburgh (really anywhere for that matter), so you have to stand out. This restaurant has some pretty good food, but it doesn't stand out from the rest. Here's what we tried: [Wagyu Beef Ramen]: My husband said it was very flavorful and tasty. The portion size was big. [Bulgogi Egg Rolls]: These were just OK for me. The flavor was good, but it was just missing some pizzazz. [Sweet & Spicy Ramen]: I really enjoyed my dish. The sweet potato noodles were fun, and the taste was more sweet than spicy. I'd give it a heat level of 1 or 2. I added Japanese tempura shrimp for an extra cost. The price of the food is a little steep. My meal was 28 for my Ramen because i added the shrimp. There are several better Asian restaurants that are cheaper and taster better. Although, the food was good; I most likely won't be returning. Too many fish in the sea. read more

This place has a cool vibe. Think modern food hall with 4 dining options and a bar. Lots of funky booths and tables to sit at. A server brought us water for the table. You then can order drinks and food from your phone using the QR code on the table. Or the server can "take your order" if you don't have a smart phone. Food came out quickly and was hot. I tried the fish sandwich and Buffalo cauliflower from Elevate. We also got the Korean wagu burger from charred. The food was pretty good. I thought my fish sandwich lacked in flavor - not a lot of sauce, salty. Fries were good we liked those and I actually liked the Buffalo cauliflower! I felt that the menu was a little pricey for a "order your own" type place. $18 for some of the cocktails. Great vibes, food could improve. Loved the outdoor area, such a nice place for large groups, families, lounging and playing! Great concept of being able to order from different restaurants, but the menu was so expansive that it's hard to decide what to get (think Cheesecake Factory vibes). As for when you get the food, well, it might not be what you expect. I got the tonkotsu ramen, and when it finally arrived, despite it not having a spicy symbol on the menu, it was SOOOOO SPICY. Usually I'd be fine with it, but I was still nursing and my baby reacts to spicy food, so I had to send it back. They didn't have a non-spicy broth, and I didn't have time to order something else, so I had to skip lunch that day. Sad. Hubs got California poke with rice from Shaka, and it came DRENCHED in sauce, it was almost inedible (would have been inedible with the rice). Fish was fresh though. Got baby a terriyaki chicken bowl, came with only a few pieces of chicken also absolutely drenched in sauce over rice, no veggies or anything. Would be nice to have a couple pieces of vegetables and less sauce. Also got a passionfruit lemonade, tasted like water. Blegh Friend's pho came out after everyone was done with their food even though she was one of the first ones to order, so that also wasn't great. My mango mojito mocktail was on the tart side, but that's how I like it. I would advise those who are familiar with authentic Asian cuisine to stay away from their Asian soup-based dishes (my reason for taking off one star). My friends said that the tonkotsu ramen was overly spicy, and the pho broth was not flavorful. Both dishes took so long to make that everyone else had finished eating by the time they arrived at our table. It's worth mentioning that our entire group grew up in California, so we have very high standards for Asian food. However, I'm still giving four stars because my husband and I loved our food. What we were most impressed with was how easily it is to order and pay via the QR code provided at each table. It's great for groups because then you don't have to go through the awkward process of dividing up the bill and Venmo charging. Each person/family can open up an individual tab and order and pay directly on their phones. I would be ecstatic if more restaurants had this type of set-up! Ambiance is great outside.
