Our first experience at Cilantro Grill was mixed. We had 3 different entrees. I personally ordered from the Hawaiian portion of the menu and went with BBQ chicken. Tasted much like chicken teriyaki with sides of white rice and macaroni salad. My wife had pad Thai, but the noodles were overdone. Everything was hot and fresh. Service was great and it's a quaint restaurant setting with cultural TV playing. I would like to note this establishment does not have fountain drinks. They'll give you 20oz sodas if requested. They do have tea and water, along with a few spirits on tap. The price is a bit high for the area, but it may be worth a try for those hardcore foodies. read more

THE BIG: Asian fusion spot located in Cedar Park. It looks like a converted fast food restaurant but the flavors do hit here. Plenty of parking in the lot outside. THE BLACK AND WHITE: The wife and I came here with a few friends for a Sunday lunch session. Interesting concept here as you get to choose between Thai dishes and Hawaiian dishes. I was feeling Hawaiian and my wife was feeling the opposite and got Thai. We got the fried calimari, spam musubi, pad see ew, and garlic butter shrimp. The best was the garlic butter shrimp, the pieces were gigantic. The spam musubi didn't hit for me as it was a meh musubi. Maybe I'm spoiled from my Hawaiian adventures. Service: Gonna start off with this, which is the reason I didn't give 5 stars. We didn't know that they closed midday which should've been told to us as we were being seated. So eventually we found out because our server kept moving so hastily it felt like she was rushing us so I asked her if she was rushing us and she told us that the kitchen closes soon because they shut down midday. This could've all been explained. We also got asked for an over medium egg with no run, it came out runny. Instead of them cooking a new egg they clearly recooked the same egg I could not believe this and told us it was not recooked when it visibly was. Lunch time visit over the weekend - restaurant had folks seated at a few tables but plenty of tables available. Staff was friendly and polite. Ordered the Fried Fish and Shrimp which comes with a side of macaroni salad and French fries. The fries were great, the macaroni salad was good, not overly sweet, the fried shrimp were delicious, the fried catfish so-so. This may have been due to the particular fish that day, the manner by which it was filleted, or not being cooked quite enough. Bear in mind I have had wonderful fried catfish, so it is not the fish itself. Companion had the Pad Thai Shrimp and chicken. Spice level 5 out of 10 ( you are asked how hot you would like it ). The spiciness seems to be controlled by how much pepper spice they add to the dish, which can result in a little grittiness in the noodles. It was an ok dish, but not quite on par with other restaurants in the area such as Green Mango. A bit of a miss on value to price. We stopped in just at the end of Happy Hour so got the cheese wontons and wine at the Happy Hour prices, which was a nice surprise. The cheese wontons were perfectly crispy, and the dipping sauce had a nice sweet chili flavor without being too heavy. My husband got the chicken fried rice at medium spice level. I had the red curry at medium spice level. The spice level was just right for his rice, but I would kick my red curry up a bit next time. I don't taste much heat, but it still had good flavor. I particularly enjoyed the large chunks and strips of zucchini, peppers and green beans with the chicken in the curry. They were plentiful and fresh. Portions are the perfect size. I might be a little biased, but I'm really glad a place like this exists in Cedar Park. I regularly visit Honolulu, and every once in a while, I miss having a legit Hawaiian plate lunch. I really want the food quality to improve so thought I'd note a few things... Drunken noodles: I left feeling full--of disappointment. The dish was so bland, I had to ask for spices and seasoning/fish sauce to remake the dish there. This was not worth $17. The beef was tough. Fish: again, super bland and not flavorful. My fiance felt full but not satisfied. Drunken noodles: had a weird gamey smell to it. We didn't even eat it :( The Hawaiian shrimp plate was the best out of all we have tried. Our family of five--two adults, two young teenagers, and one child--dined at Cilantro Grill this evening, we will not be returning. We ordered beverages, one appetizer, and four entrées. Our youngest child shared a noodle dish with my wife. The portion sizes were decent, and the food was typical Thai cuisine, nothing particularly memorable. When the bill arrived, I noticed an 18% large-party service charge had been added, resulting in a $15 upcharge. I found this unsettling, frustrating and a strong arm way to force a tip. In my experience growing up in Austin, large-party gratuities are generally intended for "parties - 6+" not a family of five. To make matters more frustrating, the dishes arrived at completely different times rather than being served together. When I asked about the service charge, I was told that it was standard and their policy. This is not an Austin/Cedar Park/ Leander standard. If you're comfortable paying a forced fee simply because you're dining as a family, in our case a family of five, by all means. We did not find it appealing and will not be back. read more

The Thai food we ordered was very spicy when we chose 5 on 1-10. My curry did not have any salt in it so I told waiter about it. He took the bowl to chef and came back. He said since it's vegetarian we do not add any fish paste with salt to it hence no salt. Any ways I added salt to it but it was very spicy so I asked is there any way to reduce the spice. He shrugged shoulders and responded it is how it is and we can't do anything about it. We did enjoy the edamame and sticky rice but other than that there was nothing special about other food. Delicious food. This is the sister restaurant to Sip Saam Thai (side note: also serves amazing Thai food). They serve both Hawaiian and Thai cuisine. You immediately notice it when you look at the menu as it is split with a variety selection from both cuisine. I ordered their Duck curry, calamari, and a Mac salad. The duck curry was very delicious. It's super flavorful and pairs nicely with the plain rice it comes with. Duck meat is yum! Calamari was very well fried since it had that perfect amount of crisp in every bite. Mac salad was savory, the way I like it. Another good meal at Cilantro Grill! Kept it simple this time, the yellow curry with shrimp and a new dish on the menu Boat Noodle Soup with vermicelli noodles. Both were very tasty. The curry had a decent amount of shrimp, and the boat noodle soup was filled with beef. The broth in the boat noodle soup was a bit sweet for our taste, we tend to steer clear of sweetness with beef and pork. A glass of riesling balanced the meal. Yum, Cilantro Grill is a close stop by our house up in CP, and our date night here for dinner certainly was a tasty option for Thai and Hawaiian entree choices. The portions for the entrees we chose, a Hawaiian grill mixed plate and the Yellow curry were giant and we had leftovers for our next day to indulge on. They also carry our favorite Lychee sake bottle which we were able to order and finish. I was really craving Hawaiian food and Cilantro Grill was just a few minutes away. They have a drive thru but I went inside to order. It was completely empty to my surprise but it was clean and nice. They had this barrel of lollipops near the door it was very cute and inviting. I ordered the short ribs with a side of macaroni salad and rice. It was very good, however it did not have the signature Hawaiian flavors. The ribs marinade didn't have any Asian/Pacific Islander or Polynesian influence it mostly just tasted like bbq. I came in for dinner with a friend, and while I did use their online table reservation, the dining room was only half full. We ordered a good spread of glazed brussel sprouts, fried shumai dumplings, musubi, and entrees of mixed BBQ plate and their massana curry with tofu. The curry is customizable to your preferred spice level and protein. Everything was delicious and instantly took me back to find memories of eating Hawaiian food with my island relatives any time they came to visit, so this also struck a content nostalgic chord for me. The service was very fast and friendly, so our drinks never got below half full and we never had to wonder when the next dish would arrive. Upon entering, we were greeted and seated. Given several menus, to include lunch, dinner and a special menu. There are chefs specials on the board, so check for them also. The Lunch menu truly caught my eye. Great values!!! I ordered the "Kailua Pork dish". Tender roasted pork atop a bed of shredded cabbage, sticky rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. Brought back memories of local spots in Maui. The Mrs's ordered the "BBQ Beef plate". Tender beef, with rice and Macaroni salad. The flavor was absolutely incredible for both dishes. What caught my eye was the ambiance and presentation was perfect. You can tell someone has spent a lot of time to ensure you enjoy your experience here. Fresh cut flowers, from their own on site garden, adorn each table. The portions were more than ample for a lunch portion. I can't wait to return and try other items. I've heard so may good things about Cilantro Grill as well as Sip Saam Thai so I had to come give it a try. From when we first walked in, our waiter was extremely friendly and gave us some great suggestions. We ordered Thai tea - I didn't see a drink menu so we ordered this without seeing the price, but it ended up being pretty worth it! It was a decently big jar for like $6! We also saw another table get an Arnold Palmer that looked really pretty but they should give out some drink menus! The crawfish - This was my first time ordering crawfish, so I don't really have anything to compare it to. But it was great! The waiter told us they got fresh shipments of crawfish every Thursday and Saturday, so ours were really fresh. The sauce was also addicting, it was a good mix between cajun and Asian, and we ended up using it on like all of our other dishes. Spam musubi - you really can't go wrong with rice, spam, and seaweed! Both yummy and filling, but you have to eat it quick because if the seaweed gets too soft, it becomes harder to bite off. Chicken and Shrimp Pad Thai - They gave a decent amount of chicken and shrimp, which was really nice. And the serving size was pretty good! This pad thai is more on the tomato-ey side than others that I've had. But still, a staple and pretty good! Crab fried rice - I was so afraid they would skimp on the crab in this dish but that wasn't the case at all! There was a lot of crab and a lot of rice, this serving was pretty big as well! I also think I ate a good amount of shell, but honestly nothing you couldn't just ignore and swallow lol. Garlic butter shrimp - the name honestly says it all. Super garlicky, super buttery, and cooked to perfection! The shell comes off super easily, and they give you so much sauce, perfect to mix into the rice. The serving doesn't look like much, but I think it does fill you more than you would expect. But if you get this, you should probably get an appetizer too. Chicken katsu - the macaroni salad and the rice, spot on! But the actual chicken katsu was kind of off. It didn't look pink inside, the the texture was straight up like biting a raw piece of chicken. At first glance I was excited by the set up since this place use to be a Jack in the box. The service was great, no issues there. The menu is a little busy. I wasn't sure what type of food to expect. If I had to sum things up it's a fusion of Thai and Japanese but the macaroni salad reminded me of a dish I had in Hawaii. I tried to venture out but the Tom Kha soup is my favorite, I had to get it. I also like Pad Thai so so the Pad See Ew was a good way to get what I'm use to but also venture out. I do like spicy but played safe with a 5, I could have gone 6 or 7. I'd suggest this place for a simple date night or dinner with friends. The wine and beer selection is awesome. I've passed by this place a lot and finally got a chance to come grab dinner with a friend. Thai Hawaiian seems like a weird combination for a restaurant, especially one named Cilantro Grill but hey, if it works, it works. Surprisingly empty for a weeknight, it definitely looks like a renovated fast food restaurant but having the place to yourself means the wait staff are super attentive to you. I tried the hawaiian side of the menu since I love kalua pork and it's good, though a tad bit on the salty side, especially since the scoop of rice is pretty small that it comes with. Mac salad is another island staple that I'm glad to see on the plate too. They don't skimp on the meat, so you'll be super full. My friend got the chicken pad see ew and the staff warned it was super spicy if you go 7/10 on the heat scale, but he didn't think it was all that bad. Plenty more exciting things to try! read more
