Hello Chuys, my old friend Having fajitas yet again Some harsh reviewers like to bash you Dubya's twin daughters tried to crash you But the creamy jalapeno on my plate Tastes so great While I pound a 'rita (apologies to Simon and Garfunkel) The thing about Chuys is that there are good (and not so good) things on the menu. It took me a little while to find what I like.. Some folks give up after one try. The chips are just like we like them: thin and crispy and tasty. BIG TIP: Ask for a side of limes and squeeze them on the chips. The Deluxe Chicken Enchiladas (extra "Deluxe" tomatillo sauce on the side, please) are our fave enchiladas there. We often, like we do at many places, share the "fajitas for one". Especially when we've drowned ourselves in creamy jalapeno (I don't even bother with their regular salsa). They always come out fast and sizzling, and my wife loves to immediately press the onions and peppers down to make them sizzle even more (that's her idea of "cooking"). If your benchmark for a "good" tex-mex place is plain cheese enchiladas, you'll probably find better around town. But what we like at Chuy's, we REALLY like. Here's why we *love* the North Lamar location, though. Sure, it's closer to our 'hood. But... It rarely seems to suffer from horrendous crowds/waits, and parking is never an adventure. And somehow it *feels* less corporate and MUCH more like a little neighborhood restaurant. This last time, we got exceptionally good service from "John". Checked in with us just enough, and never made us ask for refills on chips, drinks, and of course the creamy jalapeno. Keep John, please. Middle of the road reliable Tex Mex. No traumas. Nothing on the menu is bad. Chuy's has simple decent Mexican food with some class touches here and there. One interesting note. Austin Chuy's are all keep Austin weird. The College Station Chuy's is as jock and mainline as they come. Don't ask me how Chuy's does it. Other places with locations in both places do not Austinize in Austin and College Stationize in College Station.. Chili's, Freebird's , Double Daves, Jason's Deli etc clone themselves on both sides of the Yegua. Austin Chuy's is way better than College Station Chuy's. I always feel like I need to be wearing an American flag on my lapel to fit in at the College Station Chuys, And frankly the food is not good enough to warrant me going out to buy an American flag pin. But in Austin, I go to Chuy's happily. Ok, Ok, if you want AMAZING Mexican you go to Morelia's Mexican Grill. But if you are in Austin and Chuys is nearer than Morelia's, you can do fine at Chuy's without driving the extra mile. read more

I really don't want to write a review for this location because it's kind of our secret spot. While other Chuys locations seem to always be on an hour wait, we frequently get seated here right away. Even on Cinco de Mayo we only had like a 45 minute wait - which was our longest wait at this location to date. For those who haven't been to Chuys - why not?!? It's always on my list of places I recommend to people visiting Austin. I'm personally a huge fan of their quesadillas, but I go off menu with adding beef fajita to them. The husband either gets a chuychanga or chicka-chicka boom boom enchiladas. A few important notes - - The queso IS NOT vegetarian (chicken stock), however the boom boom sauce is a vegetarian version of queso, but it is spicy - It is totally possible to eat here as a vegan - They have a happy hour that involves free queso, ground beef and refried beans from 4-7, but the queso rarely gets filled again after 6:30, so plan accordingly if that's your thing - They love sour cream. Our server Gloria was fantastic and took excellent care of our table. Drink and tortilla chip refills were there before we even had a chance to ask for them. Truly excellent service at around 2pm on a weekday. Be sure to ask for the creamy jalapeno ranch dipping sauce to go with your complimentary tortilla chips and pico de gallo. Love these chips as they are really thin and not super greasy nor super salty. The thin chips make it easy to enjoy the pico or jalapeno ranch without ruining your appetite for the incoming meal. It's tasty to spread refried beans from your meal onto the chips and garnish with a little pico de gallo or jalapeno ranch. The chips go perfectly with a nice margarita and the drink specials here are plentiful and the drinks are not weak on the alcohol content. The fajita meats are marinated for a full day and the flavor is excellent. You cannot go wrong with the beef fajitas or beef enchiladas here. If you want to try a little of everything order the appetizer platter or the Elvis Presley memorial combo. Then you can narrow down what to order on your next visit. Lots of menu options for under $10. Saw a lot of to go orders being picked up during our visit. But with service this good we'll be dining in here again for sure. Great Tex-Mex here! Compared to other Mexican chain restaurants, this place definitely has it down on good tasting Tex-Mex. They have a great creamy jalapeno dipping sauce for their freshly made tortilla chips. Their chicka-chicka boom-boom (chicken with spicy sauce) enchiladas are super tasty with nice little spicy kick. 4.5 really Ok, it isn't as authentic as other tex-mex places. It's kind of kitschy. It's definitely an Austin spin on tex-mex. But the food is going to taste the same from location to location, you are going to get a ton of food for a good price, and the creamy jalapeno salsa is freaking awesome. I typically get the #1 or the #2 (Elvis) platter and the Wife gets the Deluxe chicken enchiladas (kind of like enchiladas suizas but with a creamy version of the verde sauce). With tip its usually around 25 bucks and we have leftovers. Try getting a similar price at a more authentic or upscale tex mex place. We usually go to this specific location and so I don't know if the others do it, but this one has a happy hour that is pretty cool. They have specials, but the main thing is they have a nacho stand made from an old car rear. When it is open, anyone can go up and get unlimited free queso, picadillo ground beef, salsas, beans, and chips as long as you order something. Sometimes we almost fill up on the free stuff and end up having to take most of our entrees home. We do try other places, Matt's El Rancho, Papasito's, Vivo's, and others. We always end up coming back to Chuy's. Plus they are open at normal restaurant times. There are other places that could challenge them, but they close darn early, usually around mid afternoon. read more

I haven't been to this location before but picked up dinner to go. We had the build your own burrito, steak burrito, beef burrito, and for myself, fajitas. We got to the store earlier than our pick up time but the food was ready to go. The guy behind the counter was fairly friendly but when we asked for another white sauce (Chuy's signature dip!) he rolled his eyes. We still needed utensils and other things that are standard for take out which he needed reminding. Luckily, the exchange was short and we moved on for our picnic. All of the food was excellent and true to Chuy's form. I still love that yummy white sauce and was grateful for the extra for everyone to share. Stopped in Sat after the race for some Tex-Mex, early evening. We both got the steak burrito, the steak was over cooked & fatty. Bill seemed high, but we were in a hurry to get out. Checked back to the menu ( had to scan to read, no actual menu) I was charged an extra $3 on my grande rita, & $2 on the burrito Also, avoid the queso, $8 & it is not very good. Last weekend was my first visit to this Chuy's location - though I have been to other locations of this chain. The decor was pretty meh and the food was pretty average. The other Chuy's locations that I've been to are a lot more dressed up; this place seemed a little run down and definitely in need of a makeover, I got the deluxe quesadillas with beef fajitas and my boyfriend got the Chicka-Chicka Boom-Boom enchiladas. The quesadillas were alright hot but they cooled down pretty quickly and were not enjoyable at all luke-warm or cold. The Chicka-Chicka Boom Boom sauce was very tangy - again not bad but not great either. The chips and salsa at the beginning were average - no green sauce. The food wasn't standout either way - hence the 3 stars. The service, however, was very friendly and our waitress even gave us free samples of the peach margarita special so we could decide whether or not to order one. It was delicious but mind you it wasn't very margarita-y. The liquor tasted more like peach schnapps than tequila but I'm not a big tequila fan anyway so I was happy with that. If you're looking for a true margarita though, don't go with this one. I wouldn't come back. I can make mediocre Mexican food at home, I don't need to go out to eat it. Strangely one time we were at this location and they were out of chicken for the soup and burritos. Fajita chicken is not a good match for the soup. Happy Hour. Get there early if you want the queso and beans. Very slow to refill these...like 30 minutes before happy hour is over it may not ever be refilled. With estimated wait times of less than 20 minutes extending to over 1 hour (on multiple locations). All to walk in to see half the restaurant being void of customers. First of all, the sauce with the chips is AMAZING! The Pina Colada I had was very smooth, refreshing and good. If you in fact, would like to try a sample of any of the mixed drinks, the staff is more than happy to let you try it before you order it, or even if you do not wish to do so. Went here last Saturday with my girlfriend and her daughter. The wait was long - just under an hour, which I understand is the norm for Chuy's on a Friday or Saturday night. No sweat. We kept occupied. The house salsa is yummy, as are the chips - but then salsa & chips are hard to screw up. The waiter started out pleasant enough then, inexplicably, started getting a little attitudy - like we were an inconvenience. Somebody must've heard us (or someone else) comment on his demeanor, because after delivering our drinks, he was the epitome of polite. I had the southwest chicken enchiladas, also known as montadas in New Mexico. They're enchiladas, but with the corn tortillas layered flat with stuff in between each layer. The chicken was good (not canned). The sauce was a little light (as in not much of it), but overall I'd give the enchiladas 3 stars. I enjoyed them. The rice was better than I thought it was going to be at first look. One of the hardest Mexican dishes to perfect, it was light, fluffy, and tasty - Four stars. The refried beans were unremarkable. They tasted canned. I'd give them two stars if I'd been eating anywhere but in this part of Texas, they get a half a star. Really. There's no excuse. They just weren't good at all. My girlfriend and her daughter split quesadillas and cheese enchiladas with creamy cilantro sauce a la carta. Both get three stars. If we could rate in half-star increments, I'd have rated Chuy's 2.5 stars. Because of the attitudy waiter and the sub-par refried beans, they lose a half a star. I'll likely try it again some day, but I won't be beating down the door to get in. read more

Was really looking forward to Tex Mex for our first meal in Austin but we were pretty disappointed by Chuy's. While there are a ton of appealing menu options, the quality of the food itself is sub par and tastes like everything's been frozen and then warmed up. The chile relleno was well cooked and I liked the cheese and chicken inside. The chicken enchiladas were pretty good as well. But overall, everything is pretty average and not very authentic. I'm so incredibly disappointed in Chuy's. I wish I could give zero stars. I wanted to surprise my husband for his 40th birthday with dinner and a group of friends. They were unwilling to accommodate us in any way. Wouldn't hold a table and wouldn't even let me send someone about an hour earlier to put us on the waiting list. That would have been a real shitty surprise in the waiting area. How unfortunate. We are a BUNCH of ex service industry folks. We would have spent all kinds of money and truly taken care of our server. Thankfully, Threadgills on N Lamar was more than happy to make my hubbies surprise dinner a success! Lesson learned. Chuy's is a must stop for me when visiting Texas. Best Tex-Mex I've ever had. Warning be prepared to wait as this place gets really busy even late into the evening hours. I love that in the waiting area a server will check with you to see if they can get you a drink while you wait. YES please. They do have a closed in outside dining area also the heating lamps weren't working very well so we waited for a table inside. Every time I'm here I order something different and I've not been disappointed yet. They have fabulous chips and salsa and the flavor of the food is great. Really good drink menu too. The staff is fantastic and friendly. I've never had bad service here. They sell pretty cool tee shirts that are great collectors items as they rotate new ones in regularly. Chuy's is a great place for family, friends and a date night. If your looking for a quiet atmosphere this is not the place. The manager had the audacity to ask "You want me to send those missing tacos in the mail?" We weren't asking for a refund or comp. You can't go wrong with the prices, and the food was overall pretty good for Tex Mex. You definitely have enough leftover for the next day, and it even tastes good still the second day! The chips I felt were a bit on the bland side, and we even tasted an old and fresh batch. I have had much better chips elsewhere within Austin. The guac was also on the OK side. One of the must eat at Tex-Mex joints in Austin, Texas. Locally owned and operated to boot. Multiple locations, North is way less crowded that the Barton Springs location, but also isn't anywhere near as fun. North location does have a large patio out front though - no patio at Barton. Lots of oddball decor in these places, from shrines to Elvis, carved fish all over the place, hub caps, etc. Expect to wait for at least an hour at the Barton location, but enjoy a cocktail and free happy hour chips with queso, taco meat, and salsa while you wait in the relatively large waiting area. Some of the best chips (super thin and crispy) and my absolute favorite salsa in town. Make sure to also request a side of the creamy jalapeno (really tasty ranch + jalapenos, although not too spicy) from your waiter. Margaritas used to be better, but I think they must have moved to a pre-made sweet and sour recently, as I think they now suck. I'm a fresh made margarita snob though, so give one a try unless you only like fresh lime without any bottled sweet and sour. Full bar and a decent selection of bottled beers - no draft. Food ranges from fair to good, although I can't say I've ever had anything that I've truly been blown away for. Daily specials are usually a good option, as are the hatch items during their famous chile fest. One of those places that you absolutely should take out of town guests to. read more

My husband and I love going to Chuy's for happy hour. Service has always been good at this location. They have their free nachos car during happy hour and discounted drinks. This last time I ordered their new black raspberry margarita and it was fruity and delicious. Their Mexican martinis and other flavored margaritas are always made well.
