Firstly... they had the food displayed on the plate beautifully, I ate some before taking the photos, so did my boyfriend. Very clean inside, music was also nice touch to my lunch. Enjoyed tasty food! What we got! Calamari Afro Shawarma MaFisa Fish and chips Jalapeño poppers to go! Aloko (fried plantains) to go :) All of it was so tasty and FRESH!
Chulla's in Rocklin is open. Famous hibiscus tea so crisp and refreshing ready to go - try it you'll be back. Proprietor's on site and very friendly with good service. Very clean restaurant. Lots of patio with shade and without. Menu is breakfast items, burgers, seafood, chicken strips, stew, wraps, and salad's. We had the fish & chips and craft burger. Very satisfying. Had onion rings too - very crispy.
Burger was huge and delicious! Homemade Hibiscus tea is phenomenal! They just recently reopened in Rocklin from their North Highlands location so it was a little quiet during lunch. But service was quick. Definitely can see this place getting busy once more people know about it!
Chulla's Café recently relocated from North Highlands to The Plaza At Stanford Ranch in Rocklin, CA. They have an extensive online menu offering local and African cuisine that is absolutely fantastic. Chulla's owner, Tomba, is a very pleasant and approachable guy. We had the pleasure of meeting him and several of his family members who also work at the restaurant while we were there. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. Lotsa smiles. We dropped in for lunch on a weekday. My wife had the Breakfast Burrito and I had the Crafter Burger with onion rings. Both were delicious with large portions. We also were treated to the special Hibiscus Tea that is made in house with 7 different spices. Yum. Next time you are in the area, I highly recommend Chulla's Café. They are open from 7am to 10 pm Wednesday thru Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday. Enjoy.
Chulla's Cafe made the #3 spot on Yelp's Top 50 Places to eat in the Sacramento area for 2022! After seeing them on the list and reading some of the reviews I knew I had to try their food. As I walked in I was greeted by multiple people and welcomed with smiles. They asked me if I had been in before and after telling them it was my first time they offered me a sample of their amazing Hibiscus tea. It's unlike anything I've had before, but reminds me of a more refreshing (and complex) apple cider. On their website it's noted that the Hibiscus tea is "brewed in-house and spiced with 12 secret spices that evoke jamaica, or sorrel, drinks enjoyed by the African diaspora - yet it is truly unique to Chulla's." I ended up ordering a big cup of the Hibiscus tea and the Hungry Lion Burger. I knew I was going to have two patties on my burger, but I wasn't ready for how big they would be. The burger was huge and had the two patties, pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, onion rings, slices bacon, cheddar and Swiss cheeses. It was seasoned perfectly and cooked the way you prefer (I chose medium rare). It also came with some amazing house made fries. I ended up taking more than half my burger home and they refilled my tea before I left, which I thought was super generous of them! After visiting and meeting the amazing owners and staff and trying the food it's clear why so many Yelpers have rated Chulla's five stars! I also heard they're looking to open two more locations, and one of them will be in downtown. I'm excited to have a spot closer to me to get this delicious food, but I'll definitely be back to this original location again soon.
Yup, my burger loving husband had to get that hungry lion King as soon as we found out about it. I opted for the other popular chicken shawarma based on reviews. Both were a sight to behold and a dream to devour. Medium doneness is probably enough for the meat patties. The onions were on the stronger side in my opinion. The side sauce was great with the fries or poured right into the entree. Looking forward to coming back for more!
We were in the area so decided to try this out as we had gotten it once when it was on Doordash. It's located in a plaza so no parking issues! There were indoor seating, and the staff were extremely friendly. Tamba was welcoming, engaging, and a funny guy. He gave us samples of the Jamaica drink, which had interesting flavors and was refreshing! So we ordered one and he told us to drink some while we wait for our food, and he'll refill it for us before we leave! Super nice of him! We ordered the Beef Shawarma and Beef Sandwich. Tamba asked if we want spicy sauce and gave us some! The spicy sauce was pretty good! Both entrees were delicious and filling. The food were cheap too! Will definitely return!
Fantastic customer service. That point is what should be emphasized when reviewing this cafe. The three crew members working that morning checked on us often as to how our morning was going so far. Tamba, the owner was pleasantly conversant (socially distanced with his mask on) and encouraged us to return and sample the other Afro-Caribbean entrees available for lunch and dinner. He also explained that the name Chulla's was his grandma's. The missus was craving for pancakes this chilly spring morning so we decided to go to this highly rated gem in the McLellan AFB area among the other brunch choices in this part of Sactown. And what a great choice it was. Hers Buttermilk Pancakes with a side of eggs and bacon. Fluffy and savory combined with the butter and syrup His Chulla's Signature Omelet (egg white option) with avocado slices and roasted potatoes. This entree was enhanced by the sauces and the crispy spuds. Not a fan of potatoes in general but these taters were seasoned perfectly and we gobbled them up. Ours Fresh Hibiscus Tea. Refreshing, crisp and perfect spiciness. After tasting the sample provided by Tamba we decided to get it to-go. Don't forget to try the house hot sauce which will make your meal experience even better. It's quite a drive from us but we're definitely going to return.
I had my eye on this pretty shiny new eats spot for a few months now. Finally being in the area, it won out between the 3 of us of where to eat on a Saturday afternoon. Nice mild day in the mid 60s. So we trotted over past MCClellan AFB and parked in a decent lot of it's own. 2 sides of parking. Only biz there. Maybe 5 cars parked. We were greeted upon entry by the owner. He chatted with every table and diner. A few paper menus and we were ready to order after I had a tough time choosing with all the killer options. We dined outside on the patio in the pleasant but a touch windy weather. Mine: Okra stew with chicken. Absolutely superb. When I eat slowly and savor each bite, It means it is damn good! Boy was it. Love, love, love! Nicely spiced, decent portion size, beautiful presentation and the stew, rice and the grilled veggies all were FIRE! Hers: Fried okra. So golden and perfectly fried. Decent portion. I sampled one. Fantastic. Blows away Church's fried okra which is often darker and the oil is less fresh. A must order! Fried plantains. Decent portion. Wow. A dusting of sugar and other spices and fried to perfection. Not mushy and not like a chip. Right in-between. Came with a tasty yogurt dipping sauce. Amazeballs! Get it! My 18 yr old girl: Beef shwarma. She let me try some. A harmonious bite with the artfully seasoned gyro meat, tomato, onion, lettuce and sauce all present. Soooo soooo good. It came with sone fries that were glistening. Like oil outside the entire fries. Excellent. A step above other fries. Another fab choice. My XL peach smoothie. OMG! Who dropped tha bomb! So thick it would not find it's way up the straw! Real chunks of peaches! Whabam! 100! They shared an XL hibiscus tea. It was excellent. The owner gives every diner a sample of this hibiscus tea. It is refreshing and tasteful. All served on plates that felt like fine dining as was the presentation. You don't find that very much these days. Unpretentious and cares about what they put out. You won't find sloppiness here. We all were very impressed. They serve breakfast, bagel sandos, ommies, stews, burgers, shwarmas, apps with wings, plantains, okra and others goodies. I may have forgotten some. Large and diverse menu. Something for everyone for sure. The owner chatted/checked on us several times. He truly is personable and wants to share his menu with all who come in. A caring and present owner is the best! I can't wait to try a bunch of items I have tagged in my mind already. Iam not sure if I can ever get there before 11AM to try the breakfast items. I do want to get at that peanut stew, shwarmas, steak sando and more! A real deal gem in the heart of North Highlands/Watt Ave. I truly was looking for my momma to slap when eating here! Lol. I'll be seeing you soon Chulla's!

Worst porkchop ever... Portion of the meal I received was A LOT smaller than in the pictures they have. The porkchops was so small that they cut it up so they can spread it apart and make it look bigger (owner even said we don't normally cut up the chops). But if you look at all the porkchops pictures, all are uncut and whole! All 3 porkchops orders we received was burnt underneath and dry Next one is the veggies, one strand of carrots?? Really? Rice was not cooked and was crunchy even with that butter garlic sauce they put on it. Pretty sure the owner saw all 3 of us on our table negative reaction, dismay when he brought over the food, so he didn't ask how everything was.... I guess our faces said it all For the price we paid, we expected something much better! Oh and the Menus on their Yelp profile are old. They're prices have gone up! read more

Okay food review time...First off! I love that they give you free full cup sample of the Hibiscus Tea drink for their first time customer and my first time having hibiscus drink and it's pretty good the 2nd cup was extra and he said I can do whatever with it add vodka rum or whatever so Vodka it is I got the VeraCruz Bagre (Breaded catfish with their Coastal Spice sauce that I smothered on top) It is pretty good & big portion, I also got their Afro Wing & it's hella bomb it's a must get Also got their appetizers Onion rings, Fries and Fried Calamari which I think the portion is very small for their price and the onion rings was a little cold when I got hm, but whatevs. The Calamari is alright my daughter says & The fries are pretty good Food so good that my boobs wanted some too as always . read more

Great food and friendly service! They serve unique dishes/recipes as well as fusion options with more traditional American cuisine. The menu is not short on variety either, with everything from soups and stews to tasty burgers, breakfast options, wings, shawarma, even fish and lobster! Stopped in today for lunch with a coworker. The staff, i assume the owners, where attentive and helpful, as it was our first time. I decided to get the boya jambalaya stew. Fabulous! This locally owned restaurant came on our radar since it had 5 stars and it was next to the Capitol Sports Center. Yelpers didn't steer us wrong since this place offered gracious customer service & delicious food. The fries were light, fluffy yet wide like steak fries. I had to steal more to eat from my family's plates! We tried various items on menu like grilled salmon, fish shawarma, and a hefty burger. Highly recommend! read more

So delicious!! I came here for lunch and the veggie breakfast burrito was to die for. It was a wonderful flavor combination of sauces, veggies, cheese.. mmm. Came with perfectly roasted and seasoned potatoes and some dipping sauces. I wish I were a connoisseur of food so I could adequately provide insight of just why it was so delicious but I can only urge you all to go and try this place out! Wait staff was very helpful, friendly and patient. I think the owner was there; he greeted us upon entry and was very cheerful and welcoming. Do yourself a favor and visit this lovely, homey restaurant in Sacramento. It is rare that I am greeted as if I am family in a restaurant. It felt as is if I was home in Hawaii. I don't know why I always forget about this place, it's absolutely delicious. I've probably been here more than a handful of times. The business owners work inside and are always so greeting and welcoming. The first time I ever came here I was offered their hibiscus tea and I've been obsessed ever since, so no matter what I order I always get the hibiscus tea on the side. This place was so good! The people there were so nice! The owner gave us some samples of sauces to try-their signature sauce and their African sauce! Both were yummy! And little samples of the fresh hibiscus tea! So good.. The food was the best. The burger that I had was not dry at all and had great seasoning including the fries that had seasoning too! First, I'm not a 5 star guy. Really hard to earn that. But if they had .5 would definitely be 4.5, maybe 4.75 with potential to be 5 stars after another visit!!! (This was my first time here) Had the Chulla's steak omelette, with potatoes. Very good!! Good flavors, roasted veggies very good. Preferred signature sauce over the spicy one, but both good! Oh... fresh Hibiscus tea- do yourself a favor and at least stop by and try this... flavors all over the place, refreshing and not like anything else I've had. Stopped by this morning for a quick breakfast to go. I don't really like the greasy pancake places so I was happy to find this place. The pictures looked great, but the food was even better. The ingredients were so fresh and I don't know what kind of sauces they put on the side but they are delicious! Staff is extremely nice and friendly. Iv walked pass this place so many time to go to nextdoor but not any more. You walk in and are instantly greeted. Everyone from the employees to the owner are so welcoming. The food was amazing. Their flavors are not something u can find just anywhere. I had the ribs. My boyfriend have the seafood jambalaya. Nd we shared the calamari. Best food Iv had in a while. Let me start off by saying that this was the best customer service in a restaurant establishment that my mom and I ever had before, the owner and his wife Sandra, and Jimmy and Mark all treated us like we were a part of their own family. These people actually want to have a nice conversation with you, and we can tell that they genuinely love what they do in the restaurant industry. Second, the food was awesome, just great, everything is made fresh and in-house, I forgot what my mom had, I had the hungry lion burger and french fries, and 3 sauces, ketchup, mustard, and ranch, and the fries were just how my mom used to make them at home when she was younger, nice and hot, fresh smooth skin, and the burger, was excellent let me tell you! I normally do not like avocado, but I decided to put it on my burger this time, and I was surprised and impressed! The beef was fresh, the onions were also freshly cut, the tomato was good, the lettuce was fantastic, and the bacon was good! Even the avocado with mayonaise and the breosh bread buns also tasted good as well! The free hibiscus tea also was good as well! My mom and I both really enjoyed the free tea as well! Also, an added bonus was that the owner gave me an idea, since I am always used to putting my folded cane on the floor, he put it behind my chair, what a great idea! So five stars all-around, especially for the great customer service and conversation! Also, since the place is hard to find, the owner promised to maybe possibly add some bigger signs out front and all-around the actual building, so hopefully people can see it easier! At some restaurants me and my mom go to, sometimes we feel ignored and discriminated against for being mexicans, but no, not here! If you don't come here, then it is an absolute crime! Great conversation, great customer service, and great food, what more can you want from a food restaurant? I'll definitely bring my mom back here again, maybe possibly in the winter time so we can try some of their soups and stews next! Excellent customer service. New place, so they are still working out the kinks, like figuring out the register, meal timing, napkins, small things. Everyone was very personable and customer-focused. Food was very good, I enjoyed the snapper. They are still working on rolling out a kids menu but were kind enough to do a kid burger for my daughter. The hibiscus tea was very tasty. read more

WOW this place is amazing. I think its African food and American too. I never leave reviews but I had to say something about this place. It's super clean inside and looks like Chipotle style interior. And food just amazing, I ordered Tanjier soup with Whole Red Snapper, expecting soup in the bowl but it was all ingredients separate (grilled veggies, whole fish) on the plate with soup paste on the side and you mix it yourself, LOVE IT. What a great idea. Cook is super nice and came out to say hi to everyone, it was nice. read more

Wow! This place is levels above anything else around here. This place seems like it would be in downtown or Folsom. The owners are really personable and ask you if you are enjoying the meal. The Chef is also really nice and explains the menu. The dish I just ate was the meaning of fusion! I had a beef shawarma like burrito with avocado and fries. Everything was fresh! The flavors mixed amazingly together. I really hope this place can make it through this COVID! read more
