The time was around 8 pm I had a party of two, was seated very quickly. The environment was very friendly and it was a place was for socializing and catching up. We placed an order for Pork Bun, Shrimp Bun, Brussel Sprout Salad, and Sesame Galric Ramen. We got out Kale Salad instead of brussel sprouts and i told waiter she told us we could the kale salad on the house. That was really kind of the resturant. Overall, it was fast service and very accommodating. Pork Bun (4/5): The pork bun wrapped with spicy mayo, a piece of cilantro, pickled carrots and a fatty slice of pork. It was extremely juicy and had a nice combo of fragrance. Shrimp Bun (3/5): The shrimp bun was wrapped with tartar sauce, slices of cucumbers, pickled carrots, and battered shrimp tempura. A decently place for an area like this but I'm guessing because it's one of the only ramen places around here. I guess it's popular because of that reason but to all of the ramen places I've been to. This didn't live up to my expectations. We ordered two pork broth ramens which were nice and creamy but it felt like it was lacking something. What I enjoyed the most was the option for soft egg or hard boiled eggs. We didn't expect an 'Onsen' egg which is technically a very very soft Boil egg instead of the typical soft center yolk. I also just want to talk about how dry some parts of the roasted pork was. I'm more used to fatty soft pork that most ramens have. The best part of our lunch was the tots which were topped with some amazing sauces that I don't recall. But I highly recommend getting the tots. The pork bun we ordered was mediocre. Finally ventured over to Chuko on a rainy Saturday evening and was told it would be an hour wait to be seated. I waited and subsequently enjoyed the best bowl of ramen I've ever had. Really and truly. The butternut squash was an unexpectedly perfect component in the miso ramen. And, I love that you can build onto their four main options and customize to your liking. The prices for add-ons were mostly fair, considering the quality of the ingredients.... except for the Nori. For an additional $1 you get two pieces of seaweed which seems measly considering your can buy a whole pack elsewhere for less than that. Otherwise, I was absolutely elated. Sometimes I wish a bowl was just egg noodles and broth. Maybe throw in some scallions. I know that is basically a bowl. I could pay to put an extra egg in my ramen next time and now that I've written it I'll do it for the next time. Sesame garlic broth warmed my bones, but my nose will always be chilly. A solid ramen option in the area - we tried the miso and the kimchi ramens. The miso was a bit too rich for me, but I loved the flavor of the kimchi ramen. The marinated egg was quite perfect and I enjoyed the other toppings I added, like bamboo and enoki and ground pork. The only unfortunate thing is that the toppings really start to add up price wise as most things don't come with the ramen bowl. We also tried pork buns and they were a pretty good start to our meal. My friend and I were craving ramen in the New York winter so we chose Chuko. We came at 6:30 pm on a Monday and there was a 1.5 hour wait. We put our names down and went to a nearby bake shop to hang out until they texted us that a table was ready. We were seated quickly and served quickly. We were really excited, but for a ramen that costs $16+tax and a 1.5-hour wait, this was pretty underwhelming. The pork was really good, and it came with good broth, noodles, vegetables, mushrooms, and a hard-boiled egg. Unfortunately, by the end, my friend and I could barely finish because it was so greasy (which tends to happen with pork soups). All in all, the meat was good but the overall ramen was nothing special. I would pay maybe $12+tax for this ramen. We came in here on a windy night for some refreshing ramen. We used to live in the surprisingly-strong ramen neighborhood of Hells Kitchen (Totto*2 + Ippudo + a host of others), so our standards are pretty high on the stuff. We liked Chuko a lot, their broth (both chicken and pork bone) was really flavorful. Their spicy pork was flavorful but not particularly spicy, which is also true for the spicy side sauce we ordered to add to give our ramen some heat. Their veggies were fresh, though my wife found their fried tofu underwhelming. Perhaps the second most critical part after the broth: their noodles were really good. Service was pleasant, and food came out extremely fast (less than 5 minutes after ordering on a crowded night). I've been going to this restaurant for years and am finally leaving a review. The service here is incredible. The waitstaff are so friendly and thoughtful, they truly anticipate your needs. The food is a solid 4 stars but the service bumps this place up to 5 stars for me. The brussel sprouts are consistently delicious, probably my favorite dish here. My kids love the ramen and pork buns. During the summer months, I love the Hiyashi Chuka - cold ramen. The only thing is it gets a bit salty so I would recommend getting the sauce on the side. Went there on a Friday night for dinner with friends. Small menu, but tasty options, and I really enjoyed my bowl. That being said, I think management has to rethink their policies. After bringing our bowls out, the waiter asked if we wanted additional chili oil. Someone said 'sure' and then waiter proceeds to explain there's a $0.50 charge for the oil. It feels a bit fast-food to nickel-and-dime for sauces. Just build it into the price of the bowl and let us season to taste as we wish. Next, we were 3 peopled and when one person was finished with their bowl, the hostess (not the waiter) brought our check out while 2 others were still eating. It was really weird and rubbed us all the wrong way. We weren't exceeding any time limit (she asked that we be done within 2 hours, and I believe we were 45 minutes into our seating), and we clearly were not all done. I think part of being a restaurant that people want to go back to in NYC is knowing how to make people feel welcome, and of course having great food. The only ramen place that I have ever been to that had a more flavorful vegetarian broth than the meat broth. Ordered the pork broth with spicy pork, soft egg, and enoki mushrooms. Prior to tasting my own broth, I tasted the veggie miso, which was so delicious and packed with flavor. I expected the pork broth to taste even better, because... well, pork. Sadly, I was disappointed and wished I had an order of veggie miso instead. The pork soup was just "eh". Lacked flavor. Maybe it was because NYC was 20 degrees today, but my ramen wasn't very hot. I typically expect the soup to scald my lips, but I was able to easily slurp without having to blow air on it. My soft egg was also... cold. Yes, it was actually cold. By the time when I had finished my noodles and garnishes, I was ready for the staff to take my bowl away. I left a generous portion of soup left over. Came here on a Saturday afternoon at around 3PM, where there was no wait time. I was greeted by a lovely waitress, who was helpful with the food. I know that you do not order anything but ramen at a restaurant known for its ramen, but I wanted to try the kale salad, due to the previous reviews. I was not disappointed. Behind the crispy sweet potato chips and kale were pieces of fried kale tempura, delicious yellow raisins and miso dressing. The combination was excellent. On a sunny but windy day I went to this crisp looking ramen place that looks more like a modern book club than a slurp shop. All in all, the atmosphere was nice. Salty broth. Please know that my friend and I both felt the broth was too salty. The broth is rich, for sure, but salty. If you need to watch your salt intake please know in advance. Also, $14 as your base and additional $1 or $1.50 for any additional topping (that usually comes with ramen) is kind of strange. I got the miso ramen and added bamboo and spicy ground pork. This is my favorite ramen spot in Brooklyn. The kimchi broth is loaded with flavor and has just enough kick of spice, such that the kimchi doesn't overwhelm the taste. The noodles are always cooked perfectly with enough broth for each bite. I've also tried pork bone broth, which is loaded with a more earthy flavor, but also quite delicious. Been here a couple of times. Had been referred by friends who raved about the place. Supposedly a contender for top ramen place in NYC, so had to try it a couple of times. Overall, the place was pretty good, definitely better than the average ramen joint in NYC. Had a few of their ramen dishes including the chicken bone, pork bone, and miso. The bone dishes were interesting and different, but not super overwhelming. The toppings were also solid but not amazing, and the noodles had good texture. Their price is comparable to Ipuddo, but more expensive than Totto. Their wait is typically pretty long. We were given a side of gyoza for waiting longer than they told us it was going to be, which is always a nice touch and shows they value customer service. I would definitely come back if in the area and wait was not long, but I don't know if I would go so far as to say it being a contender for top ramen in the city. Lots of other places that should be considered first. I ordered the kimchi ramen with tofu and woodear mushrooms and my friends ordered the miso garlic ramen and miso ramen, all with the curly yellow noodles. Everything was really CUSTOMIZABLE and the waitress gave us lots of different options to swap things out which was nice. I absolutely devoured my KIMCHI RAMEN which was really flavorful and had a really warm feeling to it, it was my favorite from the ones my friends ordered! However, I didn't love the tofu. It had a tough exterior and weird consistency; didn't really add anything to my ramen. The miso garlic ramen was really garlic-y which I didn't love but it wasn't bad. And the miso ramen had a more subdued, creamy miso taste which was good. I'll just come right out and say that Chuko is now my favorite ramen spot of all time. I've tried a bunch of famous ramen spots all over the U.S and Japan, and Chuko takes the cake. While the V of my own gray t-shirt wasn't quite as deep, I couldn't help but notice that the Chuko staff and I dress exactly the same. They seemed much more embarrassed about being associated with me (who could blame them?), whereas I could only think about how I would absolutely work here if I could eat for free...mostly because of the kale salad. This kale salad is special. It's tangy, crispy, crunchy, and savory with a hint of sweetness from the golden raisins that gather at the bottom of the bowl. The creamy miso dressing pleasantly coats the bits of fried kale and sweet potato, which add plenty of texture to the fresh kale itself, and I almost ordered another as soon as I tasted it. Pair this startlingly delightful salad with a Shiner Bock and a bowl of the pork bone ramen (I like the miso broth, but it's a bit too buttery to make it my go-to) with a healthy dose of the garlic-chili oil, and you've got a huge, satisfying meal. read more

It's just that good. The kale ($8) was one of those dishes that I didn't particularly want to try, but felt the need to because every reviewer, Yelper and their mother goes on about how good it is. It turns out they were all correct. I was shocked at how flavorful and addictive this little bowl of kale, golden raisins, crispy sweet potato pieces and vegetables was. Sure, it's not particularly healthy given that it must be mostly fried, but it's so good. I could have eaten another bowl. But I didn't - I saved my room for one of the steamed Pork Buns ($5), which also happened to be an excellent rendition. I'm not a fan of the ones that are pure fat, so this one, with just a tiny strip of fat on top, was perfect. The mayo was applied a little too much for my taste, but it was still great. Finally, the ramen - this is a pretty bare bones bowl, compared to some of the other places where you can add in all kinds of meat and corn and other toppings. Luckily it's so good and flavorful it doesn't need all that extra stuff. I got the Miso Ramen ($13), which consists of scallion, an egg, cabbage, and a choice of chicken or pork. I opted for the chicken to go on the lighter side, and it did not disappoint. The space itself is also really nice. Lots of seats at the bar as well as tables, and it doesn't feel as cramped as several of the other popular ramen places in the city do. The veggie ramen @ Chuko is one of my favorite ramen bowls in the city! Probably come here the most often whenever I have a ramen craving because it's in the neighborhood, but make no mistake - this place still makes some of my favorite ramen anywhere in NYC. The wait can be a bit long in the evenings, but they have a cool little phone app that you can use to see where your party lies in the queue. Plenty of nearby places where you can grab a quick drink while you wait, even their sister Bar Chuko right across the street. The space itself isn't very large, a bit cozy. Dimly lit. In addition to the main seating area, bar seats and some stool seats at the window facing out towards the street if you're by yourself or a couple/small group. The servers I've had have always been attentive and affable. Foodwise, I recommend the veggie miso ramen. For you carnivores out there, I still recommend the veggie ramen! Just ask for the pork added to it and they will gladly oblige. They cram so much umami in that veggie broth it's crazy. My go-to is the veggie miso ramen with spicy chili oil and soft boiled egg +/- pork depending on how I'm feeling. The ramen comes out piping hot, just on the edge of almost burning your mouth, but not quite - the perfect temp! Noodle texture is always spot on, with the perfect 'bite'. Only thing I'm probably not too fond of is the cash-only policy...but it's something I'm learning to get used to after moving to NY. The wait when we arrived was 30 minutes so we put our name in and then went and had some drinks and some delightful pickles at Bar Chuko across the street. The restaurant is tiny and somewhat cramped but it's a hip atmosphere. Absolutely no artwork on the walls...the brick becomes the artwork, I guess? (Ha). Very Brooklyn. I had read in the NY Times about their kale salad so I started with that. The kale was so crisp and fresh and dressed in a tangy sauce. Also in the salad were plump golden raisins, pieces of fried kale, and sweet potato chips. It was really delicious. My boyfriend had the steamed pork bun to start. He loved the spicy mayo on it but otherwise said it was very standard. Definitely try their fabulous chilli oil for dipping if you like spice! It was great and so garlicky. The ramen was excellent. The pork bone broth was rich and hearty. The kimchi ramen was as well just with the added spicy kick and ground pork. Oh, and the egg in each bowl was cooked so perfectly. This was a typical, delicious miso ramen. Nothing necessarily special about it. I kind of wish I had tried the kimchi ramen instead for a more unique experience. Maybe I'll come again and try that out instead. They currently have outdoor seating, takeout and delivery going. read more

Great place to get your ramen fix! I highly recommend. There's a bit of a wait time during lunchtime so I suggest you come early. I ordered the miso ramen, which came with a generous portion of scallions, a beautifully poached egg, sweet corn, and roasted pork. The broth was flavorful and addicting, and the pork was tender and fatty - just the way I like it! I devoured this bowl in just a few minutes. My only gripe about this place is that it felt like a sauna. Not sure why the AC wasn't turned on, but it felt extremely humid and made it difficult to enjoy our food. read more

Came at 5:30 when the restaurant opens and there was already a line forming to eat here. Got seated right away. The interior is spacious and modern. I ordered the pork bone ramen with soft egg and roasted pork with the garlic chili oil. The broth was perfect! Flavorful yet not overwhelmingly salty or heavy. The garlic oil added another level of flavor as well as a little bit of spice. The soft egg was cooked perfectly and all the vegetables in the ramen were delicious. I really enjoyed my bowl of ramen and left feeling super satisfied. Also came here with a friend that was vegetarian, and they have many meat-free options for them. The ONLY REASON why this place has so many stars is due its location . My boyfriend was craving ramen a couple days ago and our favorite ramen spot was closed so he opted to try Chuko smh. I never had miso with so much grease that the froth over lapped the food . The noodles were under cooked and to top it off I had to miss work for two days because I had food poisoning . Nothing about this soup was amazing or even good . The pork was bleh . The so called spice they added to the side just just made the froth taste strange and added even more oil to the already oily froth soup. I will never step foot inside this restaurant again . Nope , can't pay me enough . If you want great ramen . Go to Nana ramen on Malcolm X . It's a short 10 mins drive, and I promise you you'll forget about this low class ramen spot . read more

I've visited Chuko a year ago in a chilly spring night and it then became my dreamy ramen place ever since... It is not a traditional Japanese ramen restaurant, more towards Asian-fusion regarding the flavors, but you will be amazed by how delicious it can be when you mix traditional Japanese flavors with the local ingredients. We had both shrimp bun and pork bun and I personally prefer shrimp cause of its amazing crunchiness of the fried shrimp. Garlic flavor ramen is iconic, but my vote goes to Miso, the rich soup with a twist from butter squash is mind-blowing. You might need tons of water or sake after finishing the bowl by yourself though! Personal tip: I know it cost more but try to add on some meat and other toppings to make your noodles more interesting. Marinated egg is my favorite, highly recommend adding that to your bowl! read more

We chose this Ramen joint because the reviews were good, so what the heck, let's do this! We went when the restaurant just opened for lunch. It was a pretty darn hot day and was a bit warm inside. Not sure if the AC was working properly. Would've preferred and appreciated the cool air since we will be consuming hot broth! What we ate: 2 Pork Bun (overdone pork belly, not the best I've had - but certainly not the worse) - this was done semi-Banh Mi style with pickled radish, cilantro, etc. Kale Salad - this was delish! Highly recommend. Loved the fried kale & non fried mixed together, it was refreshing. Didn't like the raisins but the husband seemed to love it. Miso Ramen with extra pork belly - it was decent, the broth was not overly salted like some places - thankfully. Kimchi Ramen - standard, w/ ground pork - this was a disappointment. I can totally make a more killer one at home! Blah... The "noodle" should be cooked for an added 3 mins. What they served us was 'undercooked" ramen, which is too al dente and never a good experience when you used your chopsticks and the silky noodles refuses to "BEND". Again, I've had much better ramens.. especially in Tokyo, any bowl of ramen is better than this. However, when in roam, still decent for a desperate meal. Go try Totto Ramen (yes, it's a freaking long wait, but way more worth it) and then compare. Enjoy!!! read more
