Solid meal! I got the salmon bento, vegan ramen, and veggie gyoza. The ramen had a nice mix of veggies, I especially enjoyed the eggplant. The noodles were chewy and thick, and the broth was pleasant. The salmon bento was more of just a rice bowl and wasn't very flavorful, but had a nice veggie mix and interesting spicy mayo sauce. I should've taken the "No Msg" sign to be a warning, because msg left and took all the flavor along with it. I occasionally make broth at home and know that flavor can be built with naturally occuring msg from both vegetable and meat, but somehow these flavors were absent here. All the more disappointing after waiting for a long time for a seat at this restaurant, which was packed on the cold night I visited. Chicken paitan is meant to be a light, thin soup for sure, but it's kind of surprising to have no umami in a soup made with meat. No amount of soy sauce I could add to the bowl would improve it. The egg salad was advertised as a special for the evening but was similarly bland, and topped with wonton crisps that I found a curious addition, particularly since there were only 5 of these chips. All the seats are bar/counter in the front, and there's a small enclosed back seating area--they can accommodate about 20 people at once indoors, which is impressive in the space. Varied menu with assorted options of soba and ramen. Lots of vegetarian options. The lychee cocktail was nice. People seemed to like the canned Hi Chus, too. I had a great dinner here. Ordered 3 appetizers: Brussels sprouts, karage & veggie gyoza. Brussel sprouts were really good! I thought the karage lacked in flavor and taste and needed a sauce. The gyoza I didn't like either but my date enjoyed. We also ordered two canned alcoholic drinks. Very light and refreshing both were $8. The ramen was sooo good . Both broths were flavorful and filling. The sorbet was the perfect after dinner treat . I only wish it was bigger for the price. Came here on a whim after visiting Samurai Mama. My bad for not checking the menu first but I thought they'd have udon as well. Anyway, was craving something on the lighter side, so I opted for the cold niku soba. Definitely hit the spot. The beef was just a tad bit too tough, but overall very good. While I was wandering Bed-stuy and craving ramen, I noticed this place had good reviews and even better pictures. So, I decided to give it a shot. Food: 5/5 I love ramen, so I have a pretty high standard. You will not be disappointed. My friend and I ordered drinks, pork buns, atsuage, tori nanban soba (sweet and sour chicken soba), tonbara ramen (cloudy pork broth), and dessert (chocolate and hoji puddings). Our total damage was ~$85, which is amazing for so much food. My favorites items were: 1. Tonbara Ramen: a creamy pork ramen with perfectly cooked noodles and a nice piece of charsu. 2. Atsuage: fried tofu garnished with a soy garlic paste, scallions, and bonito flakes. Service: 5/5 We got there early and sat at the bar. They were very patient in explaining the items they offer and helping us select our final entrées. Constantly kept our water glasses filled and amazing music pumping. It was a great experience. All in all, a great place to have shoyu ramen. As they take no reservations, it's first come first serve. We ordered karaage and a lychee cocktail (forgot to take a photo ) The Karaage was perfectly crispy and not too thickly breaded. My quest for the best vegan ramen continues. Found this place while craving ramen in one cold rainy day. The place was a little small, bar seating only. So I was sitting closer to Bae, which I have no problems with at all. Hehe We got the vegan ramen and some veggie dumplings as starters. The ramen was not bad. Not excellent but decent. They give you extra broth/hot water (not really sure what it was) to add to the ramen if you want more soup or to change consistency maybe? First time having a ramen with avocado. The avocado added a nice texture to the ramen. I also really liked sauce that they used for the dumplings. Actually added little bit of it to my ramen. The server was ok. The exterior is unassuming enough that I walked by it and had to turn around and come back, while the interior is a bar with maybe a dozen seats and no more. The food is Japanese, but unusually vegan-friendly. They also do lunch until 4:30 and are near a train stop, which are collectively why I picked them. The lunch special I ordered contained some very freshly grilled dumplings and a choice of noodles. The tomato ramen came with a cup of extra broth that I assume was the basic non-tomato broth; if so I'm glad I ordered as I did because the tomato was much more flavorful. Avocado, seaweed, and some sort of greens highlighted the toppings. It's a weird mix: tomato, corn, and avocado are all American plants, but I'm no Japanese traditionalist, and the mix of tastes and textures here worked for me. Visited here on a slow weekend with my daughter after playing in Brooklyn. the host Kenta-san was extremely kind and accommodating - finding my daughter and I a good spot to sit, to ordering, to fixing some issues with the water glasses, etc. - so I would say service is great. I had the cold soba, which I'm a big fan of. It is hard to find good places to have it so was satisfied. Even my daughter stole plenty from me and gave it a thumbs-up. My daughter loves plain baos so we got enough for her (only downside is they charged the same $ for the plain bao vs the meaty sandwich :( but that's okay, I'm happy my daughter got what she wanted.) I would recommend this for someone who is in the area and needs a nice quick meal somewhere quiet and cozy. I'd come here again. The only challenge is parking in the area. read more

I get the four star ratings here, but for my bang for the buck I have to go 5 for a number of reasons. First, making a vegan ramen that's as good as bone broth based ramens can't be simple, and what I had today was pretty spectacular, yet basic and simple. Scallions, corn, avocado, seaweed and more I'm likely not identifying. The noodles perfectly cooked, not over, not under. Hot and steamy, sublime. No need to kill it with too much of something designed to snap your head back. Simple, beautifully prepared food. And for the record, I'm a sort-of vegan/vegetarian except when the right opportunity presents itself. If I'm going to dine on the severed flesh of dead animals, it better be really be good. The individual waiting on me couldn't have been nicer and more accommodating and willing to strike up a conversation with a traveler. A Sapporo on tap for lunch called. I answered, and enjoyed the call. Honestly, probably my first vegan ramen though I've tried many in the this city and other places around the planet. Fun hole in the wall Izakaya in Bed Stuy. It's conveniently located near the B38 bus and Bedoford-Nostrand G train stop. I had the salmon bento. It was really tasty. the salmon was perfectly cooked and seasoned. i loved the veggies and rice. It's kind of difficult to tell from the outside, but Samurai Papa is a very tiny place. They specialize in ramen, but serve soba, bento, and rice bowls as well. However, since this is a self-described ramen bar, I already knew what I'd be getting. It's nice to see that Samurai Papa offers vegan ramen on their menu; while catering to alternative diets is becoming more common, finding explicitly vegan ramen is still a rarity, at least in my experience. The restaurant was fairly busy for a weekday evening, but my friends and I had a reservation, so it wasn't a problem. We considered ordering an appetizer, but ultimately decided not to, which was a good call because there was plenty of ramen to go around - I barely managed to finish mine. The vegan ramen's stock contains onion, ginger, enoki mushroom, garlic, daikon radish, eggplant, butternut squash, grapeseed oil, and sesame oil. Toppings include avocado, mixed vegetables, kikurage mushroom, eggplant, and corn. The ramen was super flavorful, not too salty, and comforting on a chilly night. Even for those who aren't vegans or vegetarians, it's a fantastic option. I'm definitely interested in going back for the tomato vegan ramen, which I've also read great things about. read more

The standing room only is gone (replaced by maybe 8 bar seats), as is the no tipping rule. Nonetheless, there's no need to leave BedStuy for decent ramen now - and for that alone, I'm a fan. All of the ramen here is bukkake style (yes you read that right). In other words, the broth is on the thicker, denser side and you're given a cup of dashi to dilute to your palate's liking. I personally always go for the Shio. I generally find Shoyus to be overpowered by soy flavor and the curry ramen here is definitely heavy on the Japanese curry flavor. The only app I've tried here is the eggplant - flash pan fried to a perfect consistency and topped with dried shrimp, lettuce - it's a nice appetite opener. The service has always been polite, attentive and prompt imo. They also serve beer, sake and wine now - so definitely not BYOB (as some previous reviews mentioned). The space is tiny though - don't come with a group of more than 3. read more

First things first. There was only one chair open in this tiny ramen spot and there was remains of an order of a half eaten edamame. The barkeep didn't even clear it after she said I could sit there. She continued to organize whatever it was behind the bar while I sat here with half eaten remains in front of me....disgusting. She may have forgotten she gave me a menu because it took forever for her to come back and take my order, despite the menu being pushed away from me and clearly I wasn't looking at it anymore. I order Kariage soba. She then tells me they don't have soba....would've been nice to know that before I scanned the menu and decided on it. So I opt for vegan ramen. This place's broth is always so salty. Yeah they give you a side of clear brother to dilute the oversalted broth but who wants to eat all that frigging salt in the first place?? Ramen comes with "vegan" ramen noodles. Aka Spaghetti noodles. I HATE When ramen places use semolina pasta noodles....it's NOT ramen. This place is like the part of town, too cool for itself. Visited on a rainy dreary day around 7:30/8pm after receiving a recommendation from an associate. The place is small and unassuming on the outside. A simple sign and large window welcomes you to a quaint authentic looking ramen shop that you'd find on some corner of Japan. We sat at the bar because there isn't much room to sit anywhere else. Was over looked several times, maybe allowing us time to skim over the menu for the 10th time, we ordered Tsukemono, Shrimp katsu buns, shoyu Tori gara Chicken Soup Ramen, Miso Tonbara Pork Cloudy Soup Ramen, and two ginger teas. The appetizers were delicious but the ramen was flavorless and unexciting. Barley eating much of the ramen, I asked the waiter if I could pack my ramen to go. He offered to do it, spilling half of the noodles on the bar top and attempting to not make eye contact with us and he tried to quickly scoop the noodles off of the bar into the container. As much hope as I had for this quaint ramen shop, there was more to be desired. Samurai Papa recently opened in Bed-Stuy and brings speedy but solid ramen to the hood. The restaurant is pretty, with high ceilings, big windows, and modern touches. It brings a brand new meaning to minimalist - there are no tables or chairs. Again. It is STANDING ROOM ONLY. I believe the intention here is to have a genuine ramen joint feel, where you order, you eat, you pay, you leave. Shooting the breeze is anathema. While this is great for turn over and short waits, it will probably discourage many people from coming. Oh well. The ramen is solid. The portion size is a little smaller than the typical ramen joints in the city, but comes with a thicker broth which you can dilute to your preference with a complimentary cup of dashi broth. The broth itself is surprisingly not overly salty and has a lot of weight - most people should still be full after an app plus their ramen. To echo previous reviewers, each element of the ramen has its own distinct flavor and is prepared on its own. The hard boiled egg has a gooey yolk, full of umami. The eggplant slices are fresh, soft, and refreshing. The pork cha siu is melt in your mouth goodness. It is a bit of a sin that you can't sit and savor it leisurely. I would have liked to try my friend's ramen, but we didn't get around to sharing. We did split a fried agedashi tofu, which was excellent and squishy but crispy. The service is minimal but quick, giving you menus, drinks, your dishes, and then leaving you alone. She didn't stay to chat or go over the menu and there are no specials that require additional explanation. There is a no tipping policy, as all the dishes are designed to include (hopefully) fair wages. read more
