Tried again, still not bad but not great. It's the quintessential greasy spoon diner. Cash only but they got an atm inside. The coffee is generic and the foods good enough. The place has some wear on it, but the common touch areas are clean. Servers are nice and helpful. Always make sure your tiny coffee cup was full. Overall, it's okay

I met with the guys on May 7, '23 who produced the movie titled "The Supermarket". These are folks who used to work at long-gone Ellington Supermarket (where the movie was filmed). A local breakfast eatery which is all about classic fine dining where the good souls eat and meet good friends. If you're from Ellington and you have never visited this establishment before, I encourage you to spend a dime on real comfort food. From Eggs Benedict to Fish & Chips to French Toast, its restaurant is more than just a breakfast eatery. Subs and fried Seafood are good lunch deals. They're so delicious that you'll want to come back. Food is tasty, staff are courteous and the atmosphere resembles locality. It is one of Ellington's finest dining establishments the community has to offer If you want to enjoy breakfast dining experience, consider visiting this establishment because there's a lot of items to find on the menu that is really good. Folks, hop on Chuck Wagon and ride along for excellent food. Excellent service!

I ordered two poached eggs, bacon, and home fries. The bacon was fine, a little chewy but some people like that. The home fries, again, fine. But, the eggs we cold and disgusting. Poached eggs, by their very nature, are cooked uniformly. Unlike fried eggs, they are submerged in water and cooked all the way around. These eggs came back with uncooked whites that resembled mucus. I'm sure the eggs were sitting there, waiting on the other orders to be fulfilled. Not wanting to be a hassle, I plowed through, scooping the cold uncooked whites to the side and discovered a piece of not so small egg shell in it. I told the waitress there was an egg shell in the eggs, they were a bit undercooked and cold. Instead of receiving an apology or accommodations, she said she'll share the info with the owner. I was then given an excuse as to why there was an egg shell in the eggs "we use farm fresh eggs and they're very fragile". I use farm fresh eggs at home, they are fragile. It doesn't take more than a moment to remove the shell before cooking and serving it to a customer. She didn't remove the meal from the ticket or discount it and she never apologized. Like I said, just an excuse. All that being said, the place is beautiful, indoors and outside. My wife's pancake was delicious. I'm sure many things on the menu are delicious. They also seemed short staffed. And I won't wright a place off because of one meal and one server. Could be an off day for the chef/cook. The server isn't a always an indicator of the restaurant's values. I do wish she was more accommodating - especially at those prices - but it could've been a perfect storm of being short staffed, rushed cook, and a server that doesn't care.

Where do I start?! One thing I love about J Rego's is the quality of their menu; meals are always unique and truly make J Rego's stand FAR apart from other food spots in this part of CT. Yes, they offer the very best of your favorite restaurant classics, but they also add high-end, high-quality options that you cannot find anywhere else in the area. They do weekly specials (check their Instagram or call!) that always blow my mind. I literally stalk their social media each week waiting for their new options! Having J Rego's so close to home is a hazard for my self control!! And the Espresso Martinis?! Don't get me started! Delicious, high-class, and absolutely addicting. One VERY notable details about J Rego's: -- They have a FANTASTIC outdoor dining area. We enjoy it frequently in the summer, and they also set up a tent & space heaters for the colder months. Check their IG for live music on the weekends! Today, I sent my parents to J Rego's for a lunch date. They were BLOWN AWAY! It was definitely a home run recommendation. The biscuits with sausage gravy are soooo good. You also get incredible value on the sides, like a $5 dollar side of bacon that comes with six full pieces, which is practically unheard of these days. The pancakes are massive for $4 dollars, and you can add 2 toppings for just a $1.50 extra. The potatoes were well seasoned and filling, though they had a unique flavor profile that was not totally my preference. The place was packed when I got there, lots of locals all enjoying their company and their dishes. Got a seat at the counter right away, grabbed a menu and checked through their offerings. Decided on French toast with real maple syrup and biscuits and gravy. Food came out quick especially with the crowd. Everything was cooked, the French toast was okay. Not soaked enough, toasted with butter but not a lot of cinnamon in the dredge. Not great, but very functional. The biscuits and gravy were very much a northern take on the southern classic. Grands biscuits grilled on the flat top with grey goopy gravy on top. Very lackluster. The staff was very friendly, and the price was very cheap. Even with the golden delicious branded syrup upcharge the bill was only 12 dollars. Which is very affordable given the quality was not so great. As a generic diner, it does basic dishes well enough. There's not a ton of breakfast spots around, so it does well as that local greasy spoon. Doesn't need to be fancy, cause it's one of the few places in town and they are serviceable. I wouldn't drop by on my travels, but if you need cheap eats then this place will fit the bill

Went to get a coffee at the cozy coffee spot close by, and decided to give these guys another try. Server was a little over friendly. Not a negative but it does give me pause. I do try to be just another customer when I do my treks, and overeagerness makes it seem like my experience may be over conflated. Then again, the chances of me having clout are minimal. So I ordered my bananas foster French toast and real maple syrup and wait for my food. I get it quickly, then it gets scooped up because they forgot the caramel sauce. Gets re-delivered quickly and I dig in. French toast is done well, no off flavors and bread was properly soaked. Bananas were grilled and jammy, caramel sauce was tossed on bananas and whipped cream was from a can but okay as a garnish. I get the idea of what they were going for, and appreciate the properly warmed fruits and cook of the French toast itself. To me, bananas foster is banana, brown sugar, rum, and butter. The brown sugar makes the caramel and the rum adds a woody, smoky element to the sauce. Butter adds richness and body, enhancing mouthfeel. This dish has the essence of the dish it's named for, but is lacking the flavor punch. My thought: take maple syrup which has that woody taste. Mix butter and brown sugar and boil it to a thick syrup state. Make that a drizzle, and stripe it across the dish with the warmed up banana. Skip the canned whipped cream, or offer fresh whipped cream or a small dish of vanilla ice cream with the drizzle on top as well. You get the flavors of the namesake dish, the tasty bananas and the great French toast. That would make the dish stellar. As of right now, it's pretty good. It's a perfectly fine breakfast spot, does a good French toast and the price is a little high but not extensively so. The only problem I see is there's a lot of fast casual breakfast spots on that stretch of road. They will need to innovate to avoid losing business to the surrounding shops. If they offer superior quality, they may make themselves a mainstay. There's many paths they can take though, this is just one trekking foodie's random ideas
