This place was a welcome surprise. I got the lunch special which came with a bowl of Fish Chowder and a Beef Stew with rice. They food was simply bursting with flavor. When it arrived with fresh cilantro on top, I knew I was in for a treat. The Fish Chowder was probably in my top 5 soups of all time! And the accompanying beef stew was similarly flavorful. Tried again, better but still missing details. Wanted to give this place another try, so I came in for the morning breakfast routine to try them out. Inside is still somewhat nice looking if not a bit sparse and a bit dark. I try to get a single tamales. Along with a sandwich. Food comes out after a short delay. Took pics then dug in. Bread is really good. Crusty but soft and was warm. Had to cut it myself but they gave me a steak knife which worked for the job. The beef was flavored well but the jus was over seasoned with salt. It mellowed out when treated like a French dip, but still a little too salty on its own. There was about 6 small strips of steak, with some tomatoes and onions also in the mix to help bulk out the sandwich. The tamale was massive, masa was spiced well. Chicken was pulles in long strings which led to uneven bites of chicken and masa. Price was good for the sandwich but not the tamale. 13 for the sandwich is reasonable but would want the option for some fries or something to bulk it out. The tamale at 8 was too pricy for what you get. Not a bad tamale, but would rather pay 4 and get half than pay for a big one. Least then I can try both protein options and pick a winner. They are improving, and the efforts are noted. New menus and new servers make for a better experience. There's still some tweaks to be made, but it's a good place to try if you're feeling adventurous read more

Overall really decent food.The mussels were delicious, really appreciated the vinegar shot to break the acidity. The tuna and mashed potato- I didn't really get but wasn't bad. For an entree we got the wok fried rice with mixed meats. Rice was well done, but basic fried rice, the meats were cooked very well (other than the shrimp) but not a lot of meat. Overall, my biggest issue was the inability to read and understand the menu. Less than 50% of the menu had descriptions in English, and unfortunately when asking the staff they were unable to translate and answer questions. The tables around us were Spanish speaking and had a significantly easier dining experience. I feel like this is a great local Latin American diner, and if you are looking for some authentic Peruvian home style dishes this is the place. But if you are English speaking be aware you may have difficulty. read more

This is a beautiful restaurant that deserves more attention. The location is good and there is plenty of parking. Immediately I was met with excellent service by my waitress Juliana who was very kind and attentive. Not only for myself but the other guests felt taken care of. I only tried the Tallarin Verde as it's my favorite Peruvian dish and there is no complaints. I was impressed immediately by the portion size of my plate aswell as others meals. Apparently fresh sauces bottled with dates on every table is something I love to see and haven't seen anywhere else other than authentic restaurants. I'd love to return to this restaurant in the future and hope to see it doing well in the future. read more

The number of good/very good Peruvian restaurants in the greater Hartford has grown in last five years and you can now add Toby's to that list Located in a bit of wasteland for restaurants in the plaza with Town Fair Tire and Ocean State Job Lots, the space formerly occupied by a sketchy Asian buffet, is now clean, bright and huge. The apps and shared plates including fried yucca, classic potato and cold shrimp or tuna, and ceviche were all top notch and highlighted with house made green sauce and lots of lime The entrees of fried seafood and roasted chicken rivaled Cora Cora in Hartford One knock: there was no bartender and effort was required to get a glass of wine or cocktail. Even though there were only a handful of occupied tables on a Thursday night, they only had one server for the entire place, and while he tried hard, he didn't know all that much about the menu or drink options. Ate here yesterday 12/15. Let me start by saying the food was tasty. Staff was friendly and helpful but not experienced. The space was neat and clean with nice decor. It is a giant cavernous space, way too big for the niche clientele that would be seeking out Peruvian cuisine. There are "Buffet" signs everywhere and an enormous buffet style set up near the back of the restaurant. When asking when the buffet is open, the server responded there is no buffet, that was left-over from the previous Chinese Buffet Restaurant that occupied the space. That explains the size and set up of the space. The space was way too big to give any intimate atmosphere to the decent Peruvian food that is served. The parking lot was mostly deserted and there are almost no other businesses open, making the whole plaza look bleak and desolate. The restaurant looks out of place and a smaller more intimate location would definitely help this business. Onto the dining experience. Was greeted and seated immediately by the friendly staff and handed a menu. Oddly there were no adult beverages on it, and there was no bar in sight. My companion and I wondered if they had alcoholic beverages. We had to ask our server if they had them. Thankfully the response was yes, and he came back with a drink menu. There's the inexperience. Ordered the fried Yucca and Peruvian Aji. Delicious. I had the Chaufa Toby's with Rice with Beef Shrimp Pork and Chicken. It was a very large portion, enough for at least 2 people. It was served with a huge salad which was meal-sized in and of itself. Nothing fancy tho, just greens tomato's carrots and onion. $27 was a decent price, especially if you were sharing it. The highlight of the dish was the roasted pork in the dish. The flavor was outstanding. The beef and chicken were a bit dry and there only about 4 medium sized shrimp in there. I would order it again, but only if splitting it with someone. My companion had the whole fried Pargo with cassava. She swapped out the white rice for fried rice with shrimp. The shrimp were large and rice was tasty but the Pargo was $35 and the change in rice was an upcharge of and additional $8.50 which the waiter failed to mention. The fish was delicious and tasted fresh. But overall, a very overpriced dish. Although the staff was friendly, for a restaurant that has only been open for a month, there was no management out on the floor checking on guests or food. In summary, no complaints about the taste or quality of the food. The space was neat and clean and staff was friendly. The location and size of the space lacked the intimate atmosphere that would have been more in line with the delicious Peruvian cuisine. I would venture to guess if a Chinese Buffet could not survive in this space, I can't see how this restaurant will. Would definitely help if there was some front of the house management interaction with guests. I would definitely try it again, hopefully they will survive long enough for me to visit again. A group of 4 of us went on Mother's Day at 5pm and it was mildly busy. The first thing you notice walking in was the music...much too loud! Our efforts to have them reduce the volume failed. After 15 minutes a server finally arrived and another 40 minutes to get our drinks. It was over an hour before the meals came and the food was fantastic! The steak was only a little over twenty bucks and looks bigger than in the photo. The waiters were overwhelmingly polite which was easy to take. The steak was served laying on top of a lot of french fries. Maybe the salad would have been better in a bowl. Decent place overall. Inside is very large, maybe too large. Definitely try the soup and the portions are huge. I ordered chicken and rice. You get a large piece of breast that is cooked nicely but not a ton of flavor and a little greasy. The rice was the best parts. I'd give another try. Service is not bad. read more
