Vernon diner has always been my favorite for pancakes. Then I found out during Christmas time their cheesecake is delicious and my favorite if I want to over do it. I was craving breakfast, I typically don't want it but today I got the Irish Benedict with corn beef hash and blueberry pancakes. Service was amazing and the food came out fresh, hot, and fast. We were able to eat and leave within 45 minutes to make it to my son's soccer practice. Looking at all the desserts always interest me and I say I'll bring a slice home for later. By the time I finished my meal I no longer want the cheesecake. I need to come here just for the cheesecake and nothing else. Taste better than Cheesecake Factory for sure. read more

We dine here every few months & it's always a decent meal. They used to be open 24/7, but since Covid, they have kept more limited hours. I wish the late nights would come back for those midnight snacks I sometimes crave. The Vernon Diner has a large diverse menu. And there are all the cakes & pastries displayed in the glass case when you come inside - all look delicious. They recently built a really nice and bright enclosed porch complete with heaters & a/c. The service is always very good. Parking can be an issue during busy times, and we often have to end up parking near the bank next door. This visit was breakfast. I usually order the egg sandwich, however I opted for the pancakes this time. They were ok - large, fluffy. But a bit dry. So I'm back to my tried & true breakfast sandwich next time. read more

For our monthly get together, stopped in w 3 friends after morning Mass at St. Luke's in Ellington. Signs on the front doors proudly proclaiming Best Diner in Hartford area in both 2024 and 2025. So I was excited, especially this being my first time at VD. Having grown up in Yonkers NY where, as a young adult, there were no less than eight 24/7, 365 diners w/I a 5-mi radius from home, I was totally underwhelmed by the Vernon Diner. First, the positives: service excellent, prices pretty reasonable, HFs good. However, I literally ate the last gulp off my first cup of coffee. The bottom and side of my cup covered in grinds. Nasty. Replacement cup better, but bitter. The rye toast was actually marble rye bread, barely warm. The 3 of is who had it agreed. My meat lover's omelet was good, not great. To my liking, a bit overcooked. If the criteria for being voted best diner is that you must have the actual word "diner" in your name, then maybe VD rates. Traveling south we stopped for a late lunch at the Diner. Sometime we will have to just plan on dessert, cuz so far we've not had room after our meal! Service was mediocre; not the best or worst I've had here. The corned beef hash is always good but it's extra good if you get it extra extra crispy!!! It's the only way I'll get them with all the crispy bits. Their desserts are always good, especially the baklava. Ambiance is typical diner. Inside could use updating but they just built an indoor patio area but I have yet to be eaten in the area. It looks really nice and updated though. Life is short . F....it up! Family, Flavor, Friends Stop by the Vernon diner on the way home for a quick snack. We got the tuna out, which is always solid. Just enough dressing. Well mayo never use dressing on tuna melt but use mayo. And got the Brooklyn burger, which is cooked perfectly. Terrible experience... 50 minute wait for food. Waiter did not tell us how backed up the kitchen was. Food arrived cold...home fries were greasy mashed potatoes with no consistency. I really like diners so I often will look for one when on road trips and this time was no different. Stopped in on my way home and the place is really big but the parking lot doesn't seem to match its internal capacity so you may find yourself waiting for parking. They offer two seating areas; inside with air conditioning or outside on patio with no a/c but it seems to have a roof that fans open to let air in so that was a neat setup. Food is typical, likely frozen, diner food because the menu is massive. But I expect and know the food is not freshly hand made and pulled out a freezer and I'm ok with that as long as it doesn't taste like cheap garbage. I was happy with my burger and fries. Service wasn't terrible but it was a very busy afternoon so it took a bit for my order to get taken and food to come out. This place is not NYC fine dining but I like the comfort foods of a small diner. I certainly would never buy a steak at a diner though. read more

Normally this is a great place with GOOD food . Today 11-15 Sat . The food was TERRIBLE!!! How do you mess up breakfast ??? The first waitress dropped our drinks and she wanted to go home . The next waitress we got was obviously over worked and VERY tired and seemed very annoyed . Maybe the owner needs to pay her staff better instead stirring on her tuff watching HER team struggle . If there's anything I hate worst it's a restaurant that post their closing hours but fail to tell you the kitchen closes early or the y stop seating 1/2 hour before closing. It's a waste of time and a turn off for patrons. That's is what happen to us the other night at Vernon Diner. We were there at 9:30. We stood at the doorway for a bit while two girls were having a conversation and failed to acknowledge us standing there even though we were 4 feet away from them. Then one of them says may I help you. We said yes, two for a booth. Then she proceeds to say that they stopped seating at 9:30. However we were there at 9:30. Hubby said well it is 9:30 right now. She said I'm sorry I can't help you. As we were leaving another couple were walking in and we told them not to bother, they stopped seating at 9:30 so they left. The whole concept of closing the kitchen 1/2 hour early or stop seating patrons 1/2 hour earlier than the posted closing time shows just how thankful they are to get business. If they just posted their honest hours people would not waste their time going in. The only thing anyone cares about is what time they can walk through the door, not how long you have to eat. What do they do, throw people out at 10:00 and lock the door? Most restaurants close at a certain hour, the door is open until that hour. Ordered a trio salad. Went to pick it up after 20 minutes. Had to wait another 15 to get it. While 5 people stood around looking g at one another. And they wanted an up-charge for balsamic dressing. Came here for brunch with five friends while visiting Connecticut -- it's a huge diner with a lot of capacity, and we were able to walk in without a reservation at around 9 am on Sunday. I like the ambience a lot, very traditionally a diner, They have a huge menu for brunch, and a lot of classics. I thought the service we received was fantastic, really fast and attentive. Also always appreciate when they leave a pitcher of water for big groups so we can refill ourselves. I ordered the eggs benedict and Vernon Special with my partner, and thought everything was very good! Large portions freshly made. My friends got the breakfast burritos and seemed a bit disappointed about the amount of chicken that was included, though and didn't like their home style potatoes (I thought they were good though, so definitely a matter of preference). read more

We waited almost 10 minutes for someone to even come to our table (it was 7:15 am and the restaurant was essentially empty). Egg was undercooked and the English muffin was barely toasted. Bacon was extra crispy as I asked for. Restaurant was very cold and the ladies room was like an ice chest. We waited for the check and finally went to the hostess desk to get it. Highly recommended by our friends we decided to give Vernon Diner a chance although it wouldn't have been my first choice. Staff was very friendly. Our waitress was great. The inside feels like a typical outdated diner. Didn't feel dirty but didn't exactly feel fresh and clean either. Crayons and crumbs lined the seat of our booth. Everyone in our party ordered breakfast items and enjoyed them. My wife received the wrong order but they admitted their mistake and quickly replaced it. Portions are large. I ordered the monte cristo sandwich. The fries were barely room temp. The bread they use on the sandwich is good but mine was a little soggy and greasy. Also realized there was no jam on the sandwich ?? That's what makes the sandwich special ! So that was disappointing. I had to use strawberry jam from the condiments on the table to try to bring it back to life. No powdered sugar or anything on top either. Not exactly the sweet and savory combo you'd expect. If you come here for breakfast you'll probably be fine. My wife said she would come back for that. But as for me, I do not plan on returning. read more

Had a great experience with five close friends here today. We sat in the glassed in patio. It felt like we were al fresco. I had apple cinnamon pancakes. Frankly, I feel the recipe should be changed from strings of apple to diced apple. The texture of the apples remind of shoestring fried onions. Also, more cinnamon would have been nice. I've had a few pleasant experiences here and I must say, despite feeling a little rushed, I really couldn't be happier. Ambiance is hustling and bustling on a busy Sunday and they will NOT seat you until your whole party has arrived ... (at least at least at peak busy times). Dessert case was increasingly impressive the longer I looked. And I'm debating diving into my leftovers box even as I write this review. I just want another bite! What can I say! :) Thank you! And I loved the newspaper article by the doorway that explained the history of the place. It felt very home-owned and operated and I loved knowing the owners are so invested :) it always makes me feel a bit safer eating out! I have been coming here for 19 years & I can honestly say i have NEVER EVER been disappointed with ANYTHING. The food is consistently exceptional, the service is always good & the desserts are to die for. It is better than any diner i have ever been to in my life & ive been to two that were featured on Diners Drive-ins & Dives. ( but that's another review) It is such a good establishment, it should be taken seriously! I have not been here in some time because I moved away, & in my absence they added on a seating area. It takes up the space that used to be their outdoor seating, but is completely enclosed. The windows & roof are remote controlled to go completely down to the foundation w/ the roof retracting on demand. It is climate controlled, but I still a little chili for the cold winter months, so it is open during the warmer weekend days for now. This place is phenomenal for desserts. They have a bakery in back and do everything in house!!! Again, not a bad one in the bunch & they will cater allowing you to order specialty cakes & pies for occasions & holidays. read more

I came here with a friend for a Sunday brunch recently. This place never disappoints! We were able to get a table for two right away but others in larger parties had to wait. I love that they have several different Benedict's. Since I don't eat meat, I ordered my usual California Benedict without the bacon. It was so delicious and was served with lots of country fried potatoes. My friend enjoyed her large veggie omelet as well. This place is crowded every time I come here, that's because the food is consistently good and there is a surprisingly large menu for a diner. Our server was delightful and efficient as well. I was very pleased with my food. My waiter was out standing and he was very pleasant with my whole family. The only problem I had was has was with their manager. When I had asked what her role was it was pointed out of her title. Not sure of her name. But she had dark hair and was talking to the another woman in a leopard shirt. She kept sneezing half the night without covering her mouth. I'm not picking at her but its just unprofessional and not very suitable for an eating establishment. Overall, the food is good, My husband had a breakfast Stuffed French Toast and sausage he liked, but I got a portobello panini with waffle fries. It had maybe 2 slivers of portobello mushrooms on it. The waffle fries look absolutely amazing, but they are not. There is virtually no potato inside. The pickle on the side was nice and crunchy and the tiny about of coke slaw was great and I'm very picky about coke slaw. The biggest disappointment was I was torn between so many of the vast array of beautiful desserts and not much help. I deduced what some of them were because they were not labeled. One I thought was a lemon coconut cake, but was told it wasn't. I asked I could could get a slice anyway and they said that that was only for buying the whole cake. I decided to only get the pineapple coconut cake. It's not something I would get again because it just feels wet. I can only guess maybe there's pineapple in the cream in the middle that seeps into the cake? I don't know, but I don't actually taste pineapple or coconut, but the frosting isn't some thick, sickly sweet crap, it's a light and fluffy whipped cream. Meh. read more

When you first walk in, all you can focus on is the glorious dessert case! Absolutely amazing! The place looks and feels like a typical diner. We went here on a holiday and it was mobbed, but we were still seated right away. The waitress was very nice, but service was a little slow. The food was good and the portions were very generous.
