You've eaten at diners, but this one has a positive upbeat energy - which is not typical for diners - and is hard to articulate. I think it's a combination of the staff on the floor, the lighting, the cleanness and decor. While I often get any of the breakfast items, my go to is the spanakopita. Two bites and done -- disappointing lunch I really wanted to like this place, but the avocado wrap was awful. I previously bought chili and chicken tenders. Those tasted fresh off the supermarket processed variety. This time it was the avocado wrap. The tomato wrapping itself was stale, the croutons tasted like they'd been sitting out for days, and the blue cheese dressing had that cheap, discount-bin taste that's hard to ignore. It's like they don't realize that people leave comments nowdays. I took exactly two bites and left the whole thing sitting on the plate -- I just couldn't do it. Credit where it's due: the carrot cake was genuinely good, I only hope it's made in-house, otherwise it makes the whole ordeal worse. Vernon diner has always been my favorite for pancakes. Then I found out during Christmas time their cheesecake is delicious and my favorite if I want to over do it. I was craving breakfast, I typically don't want it but today I got the Irish Benedict with corn beef hash and blueberry pancakes. Service was amazing and the food came out fresh, hot, and fast. We were able to eat and leave within 45 minutes to make it to my son's soccer practice. Looking at all the desserts always interest me and I say I'll bring a slice home for later. Had lunch today at this very busy diner. Got seated right away along with menus and two servers taking our drink orders, chocolate milk shake and pink lemonade. Both arrived very quickly.lemonade was very good, chocolate shake looked more like chocolate milk to me but that could be normal for them. The menu is large, small book format offering everything from appetizers, paninis, sandwiches, burgers and breakfast. We ordered the New York omelette and the combo burger. There was a little wait but given how busy they were it was understandable. Both dishes arrived and filled the large plates completely. The omelette looked amazing and filled the oval plate completely with the addition of potatoes. Enough that half the plate got taken home. The burger was cooked as requested, medium, with two strips of bacon, cheese melted into the top of the bun, small container of barbecue sauce and a small one of coleslaw. The burger was good, well seasoned, with plenty of flavor. The coleslaw was also great, just wish there was more. The big disappointment was the French fries. They were limp and clearly not cooked for the order looked like they were sitting under a heat lamp for orders to come in. Service was good, seating was comfortable, we had a table but booths appeared to be cramped and maybe not comfortable for the larger patrons. They have a great seating area in front of the diner with a roll top roof with what looked like very comfortable and comfy chairs and tables. Would like to sit out there next time and we will go back to try something else of the menu. And like all diners the approximately 12 feet of dessert displays make you think dessert might be the best thing to start with. Gone are the days when this place was open 24 hours, but it has survived when many similar diners have failed. This is a great spot to stop by on the highway. Food is "good", but it's a diner. What do you expect? I've never had a bad meal here but I'm also not expecting anything life changing. Everything is always done well, they have great hours, and there's something for everyone if you're in a big group. Generous portions, and I've always had very friendly waitstaff. We dine here every few months & it's always a decent meal. They used to be open 24/7, but since Covid, they have kept more limited hours. I wish the late nights would come back for those midnight snacks I sometimes crave. The Vernon Diner has a large diverse menu. And there are all the cakes & pastries displayed in the glass case when you come inside - all look delicious. They recently built a really nice and bright enclosed porch complete with heaters & a/c. The service is always very good. Parking can be an issue during busy times, and we often have to end up parking near the bank next door. This visit was breakfast. I usually order the egg sandwich, however I opted for the pancakes this time. They were ok - large, fluffy. But a bit dry. So I'm back to my tried & true breakfast sandwich next time. read more

Our family went out to eat dinner there tonight and it was one of the worse dining experience we ever had. The service was totally terrible and unexceptionable. The waiter was not focused on us at all, non attentive, non personal, and not friendly at all. After the food was brought out he never came back to ask how everything was, if we needed anything, and more water... nothing!! And one of the dishes was incomplete and we never had the chance to tell him. Finally a manager came over and we expected at least the incomplete dinner bill to be removed from the bill. First, the positives: service excellent, prices pretty reasonable, HFs good. However, I literally ate the last gulp off my first cup of coffee. The bottom and side of my cup covered in grinds. Nasty. Replacement cup better, but bitter. The rye toast was actually marble rye bread, barely warm. The 3 of is who had it agreed. My meat lover's omelet was good, not great. To my liking, a bit overcooked. If the criteria for being voted best diner is that you must have the actual word "diner" in your name, then maybe VD rates. I've been here several times and every time I've been there the service has been poor. The wait staff is always miserable and never crack a smile. Last time I was there for breakfast I requested my homefries to be cooked a little extra cause I like them crispy and I was told that they don't do that on weekends. If I'm ordering food and want it cook a certain way, it should not matter what day of the week it is, I'm a customer and should get the food made the way I want it. Our first time here as our favorite breakfast spot was packed with a long wait. Walking in we couldn't believe how large the restaurant is and the pastries in the front area looked amazing. We were seated and given water and menus promptly. Our server, Victoria, was very nice and attentive. Ordered our meals with a request that our home fries be cooked extra, extra crispy. It was busy as Sunday mornings usually are but it took an extremely long time to get our food. The restaurant having been in business for so long should know this and prepare for it, but people all around us were wondering where their food was. Finally arrives and my home fries are basically white potatoes with a touch of brown. I reiterated that I requested them well done and I was asked to scrape them off my plate onto another and she would bring them back to the kitchen for more cooking. The attached pic shows my extra crispy home fries after they were send back for more cooking. LOL. Then to top it off I'm eating my breakfast burrito and hit something crunchy....egg shells. Inside could use updating but they just built an indoor patio area but I have yet to be eaten in the area. It looks really nice and updated though. If you like your sunny side up eggs with homefries served cold with wet and soggy toast because everything obviously sat and waited until one item was added, the grilled kielbasi (the only item that was hot) that was delivered by an inattentive waiter who's only comment upon my complaint regarding my hot meal being served to me cold was "It's Sunday, it's busy" then this is the place for you. Well mayo never use dressing on tuna melt but use mayo. And got the Brooklyn burger, which is cooked perfectly. I really like diners so I often will look for one when on road trips and this time was no different. Stopped in on my way home and the place is really big but the parking lot doesn't seem to match its internal capacity so you may find yourself waiting for parking. They offer two seating areas; inside with air conditioning or outside on patio with no a/c but it seems to have a roof that fans open to let air in so that was a neat setup. Food is typical, likely frozen, diner food because the menu is massive. But I expect and know the food is not freshly hand made and pulled out a freezer and I'm ok with that as long as it doesn't taste like cheap garbage. I was happy with my burger and fries. Service wasn't terrible but it was a very busy afternoon so it took a bit for my order to get taken and food to come out. This place is not NYC fine dining but I like the comfort foods of a small diner. I certainly would never buy a steak at a diner though. read more

Came here for brunch with five friends while visiting Connecticut -- it's a huge diner with a lot of capacity, and we were able to walk in without a reservation at around 9 am on Sunday. I like the ambience a lot, very traditionally a diner, They have a huge menu for brunch, and a lot of classics. I thought the service we received was fantastic, really fast and attentive. Also always appreciate when they leave a pitcher of water for big groups so we can refill ourselves. If there's anything I hate worst it's a restaurant that post their closing hours but fail to tell you the kitchen closes early or the y stop seating 1/2 hour before closing. It's a waste of time and a turn off for patrons. That's is what happen to us the other night at Vernon Diner. We were there at 9:30. We stood at the doorway for a bit while two girls were having a conversation and failed to acknowledge us standing there even though we were 4 feet away from them. Then one of them says may I help you. We said yes, two for a booth. Then she proceeds to say that they stopped seating at 9:30. However we were there at 9:30. Hubby said well it is 9:30 right now. She said I'm sorry I can't help you. As we were leaving another couple were walking in and we told them not to bother, they stopped seating at 9:30 so they left. The whole concept of closing the kitchen 1/2 hour early or stop seating patrons 1/2 hour earlier than the posted closing time shows just how thankful they are to get business. If they just posted their honest hours people would not waste their time going in. The only thing anyone cares about is what time they can walk through the door, not how long you have to eat. What do they do, throw people out at 10:00 and lock the door? Most restaurants close at a certain hour, the door is open until that hour. Highly recommended by our friends we decided to give Vernon Diner a chance although it wouldn't have been my first choice. Staff was very friendly. Our waitress was great. The inside feels like a typical outdated diner. Didn't feel dirty but didn't exactly feel fresh and clean either. Crayons and crumbs lined the seat of our booth. Everyone in our party ordered breakfast items and enjoyed them. My wife received the wrong order but they admitted their mistake and quickly replaced it. Portions are large. I ordered the monte cristo sandwich. The fries were barely room temp. The bread they use on the sandwich is good but mine was a little soggy and greasy. Also realized there was no jam on the sandwich ?? That's what makes the sandwich special ! So that was disappointing. I had to use strawberry jam from the condiments on the table to try to bring it back to life. No powdered sugar or anything on top either. Not exactly the sweet and savory combo you'd expect.
