I do love a diner. I think it goes back to being a kid and spinning around on one of those counter seats while the cook chatted up my mom. :D Whatever the reason, I am always on the look out for a true diner experience and Norm's has it. The parking lot is 'smallish' on the right side of the building and flows right to left in one direction, so be sure to look for the 'enter' sign. There are three steps up into the diner so be aware of that if you have difficulty using steps. Also, the restroom is tiny: like so small the sink is about a foot long by half as much wide, small. We stop in here on our trips out to Groton. Last visit we stopped for a late breakfast/early lunch. I ordered a coffee and it came in a nice big mug and is a mellow blend with a smooth finish. There are photo descriptions on the table of what your eggs will look like based on how you order it, so no surprises. What a great idea. The table holds napkins, hot sauces, salt & pepper, jellies, creamer and sugars. The staff are pleasant. Some are more chatty than others. There are definitely some regulars here each time we visit. The menu has lots of breakfast options but there are no substitutions so you may need to order al a carte or get a different 'meal' option and add-on an item. Just a heads up. They have plenty of toast options including English muffins. The lunch menu is a variety of sandwiches and burgers. Fries are tasty. Lettuce and tomato on your sandwiches are fresh. I can't think of a single disappointment we've had here. If you are in the area and enjoy a nice diner experience, stop in to Norm's. read more

Staff was very friendly and welcoming. It was crowded and our family of four sat at the counter. The staff chatted with us and made recommendations of local things to do. The food - fantastic!! Love the classic diner look. This spot got good reviews so I was excited to eat here. I ordered cheese omelette with bacon and crispy hash browns. Well, here it is...the omelette was extremely overcooked, scorched and horrible tasting. The hash browns tasted like they were cooked on a dirty grill. Please check out the picture. Not sure how the cook thought it was acceptable to serve. My husband ordered chicken and waffles. It was a beautifully cooked meal. It actually made me jealous. Our waiter was nice and personable. A caveat to my review: My husband and I have differing opinions. If we averaged them out fairly, it would be a 3.5 from us. Since 3.5 isn't an option, I rounded up for "personality points" from the staff. Our first breakfast here I loved (waffles with blueberries and pecans) and my husband liked (breakfast burrito). We both found the coffee lackluster. What brought us back was the friendly vibe and the banter between the staff and not only the regulars but also us newbies. Service was super quick and friendly. On our second, most recent, visit, we waited about 30 minutes for breakfast dishes. I think they just got slammed, but it was mid-morning on a Thursday and felt like a long time to wait. Food was solid, nothing amazing. Vibe was still great. Prices were high--like $16-18 for a scramble with veggies and potatoes. But the coffee was still lackluster, and for my husband this is a dealbreaker. We wish them well but will be looking for other breakfast places when we eat together. However, I'd probably be happy to come back as a singleton if my husband is out of town. read more

What a beautiful piece of history. Not many diners like this left. The food was UNBELIEVABLE. Was very busy, but we managed to get two stools at the counter. We were within 5-6' of the working staff and they were very conversational and friendly. Honestly, for my wife and I, we did it was the best breakfast we have had in years. Just moved up to Connecticut from Florida and had to find a new breakfast spot... and wow, Norms Diner absolutely blew me away. Hands down the best breakfast I've ever had -- and I don't say that lightly. Everything was fresh, cooked perfectly, and you can tell they actually care about quality. However with the weird present owner who seems to never want to work because they are not often open and the way I was treated I will never go there again. I ordered scrambled eggs and wanted it made moist because I do not like jello type eggs, Remember this is an egg place, primarily serving eggs in all its forms when they decide to open. I got the scrambled eggs and they were as dried out as you can imagine. I told them about it immediately because I was sitting at the counter. I was immediately told by the nasty owner to not ever return. I truly miss the old Norm's which this no longer is. This is an extremely unfriendly restaurant that I will never return. Their food is not good and thus there is no reason to go there. The previous old Norm's that had several owners was the friendliest diner you could ever go to. It was a typical diner, open 24 hours and always wanted to please. This owner is a hack and should not be supported. This local diner right off the highway is a total gem with classic, delicious comfort food. We went a little of the beaten path to experience this "true diner" after a visit to Foxwoods. Probably more locals than us tourist as we entered and to me that's a win right there! Old school all the way from the no gruff waitresses to the basic breakfast staples and good coffee it was just as expected. We started coming here three years ago when our son moved to Groton and we make a point to come for breakfast whenever we are in town. Family run - Steven and his sister are always there, usually running the griddle but talking and greeting every customer that comes in the door - frequently by name. 60+ miles from my house, and worth every ounce of gas. Norm's has been on my foodie bucket list for several years. An iconic 50's diner. Smallish parking lot, and very limited street parking. Walk through the door, and it's almost like stepping into a simpler time. No tables available, so I sat at the counter right in front of Maestro Steven. He is to short order cooks what Tommy is to pinball. I opted for an omelet special w sliced corned beef, chunks of ham, and swiss. Eggggcellent, as were the nicely spiced home fries. My server, Dale, was perfect. In fact, the whole operation was like a well-oiled machine. Finally, Sweet Melissa, who hails from LA (lower Albany), rounded out the positive experience. I don't normally rate a diner 5-star unless their CBH is homemade. Norm's uses canned. But they are the exception to my 5-star rule. read more

This is what I call, my kind of place. Being from the NY/NJ area, we love our diners, especially the traditional looking ones. As soon as we walked in we were greeted with a warm welcome and told there was a 15 minute wait. About 10 minutes later we were welcomed in. You could immediately see the interaction between the staff and at least half the customers, to me that said, this was their usual place. That's typically a great sign. We had some basic breakfast food, Chocolate chip pancakes, blueberry pancakes, country fried steak and eggs (a family go to) and a Mediterranean omelette. Everything was delicious, but my country fried steak and eggs was one of the best I have ever had. After a few minutes with our food, both the waitress and the cook checked on us. By the time we left our interaction with the staff became quite friendly. They really know how to make a customer feel welcome. To me, this place is great! And I love small diners where they cook and handle the food in front of you because you know they have nothing to hide. I would highly recommend this place. I wish the owners the best of luck. You can tell there are many repeat locals, but strangers are made to feel equally welcome. Arrived by 9:45 a.m. on a Sunday and there were 2 tables/booths available without a wait. October 24, 2025, 6:15 a.m. I stopped in for a breakfast sandwich and coffee. I didn't have time to sit down, so I asked for an order to go. I paid immediately plus tip. The female cook took the order and placed the sandwich in front of me. I tried to take the sandwich, but she started yelling at me as if I were stealing something: "Don't touch it! Don't touch it!" A very unpleasant experience. Absolutely no reason to do that to me. This taught me to never pay upfront and to leave a tip unless the service deserves it, as was the case here.
