We had a late breakfast on a Sunday morning and arrived well before the closing time and "last order" time. Parking lot is small and tight. Since it was a weekend, only breakfast options were available on the menu and some items are more expensive than they would be during the week. Inside is typical diner decor with clear plastic over the wood tables. The food was good, but everything else was disappointing. First is the noise. Not only is there lots of yelling between the staff, the music was incredibly loud and obnoxious. The staff generally were not very friendly. Our server was visibly short when taking our order and following up, but spent time chatting with regulars at the counter, so it wasn't due to being busy. My son was actually so stressed by her and the overall vibe in the restaurant that he rushed through his meal so we could leave quickly. In hindsight, there are a number of earlier yelp reviews that call out friendliness and get a harsh response from the owner/manager, so I fully expect one here. Point is, unless you're a regular, don't expect much warmth. Coming back to the food, everything our party ordered tasted great and there were mostly empty plates when we left. I really like seeded rye toast with my eggs, but they don't have it as an option. Prices were in the $10-15 range if you don't order something with meat. I do love a diner. I think it goes back to being a kid and spinning around on one of those counter seats while the cook chatted up my mom. :D Whatever the reason, I am always on the look out for a true diner experience and Norm's has it. The parking lot is 'smallish' on the right side of the building and flows right to left in one direction, so be sure to look for the 'enter' sign. There are three steps up into the diner so be aware of that if you have difficulty using steps. Also, the restroom is tiny: like so small the sink is about a foot long by half as much wide, small. We stop in here on our trips out to Groton. Last visit we stopped for a late breakfast/early lunch. I ordered a coffee and it came in a nice big mug and is a mellow blend with a smooth finish. There are photo descriptions on the table of what your eggs will look like based on how you order it, so no surprises. What a great idea. The table holds napkins, hot sauces, salt & pepper, jellies, creamer and sugars. The staff are pleasant. Some are more chatty than others. There are definitely some regulars here each time we visit. The menu has lots of breakfast options but there are no substitutions so you may need to order al a carte or get a different 'meal' option and add-on an item. Just a heads up. They have plenty of toast options including English muffins. The lunch menu is a variety of sandwiches and burgers. Fries are tasty. Lettuce and tomato on your sandwiches are fresh. I can't think of a single disappointment we've had here. If you are in the area and enjoy a nice diner experience, stop in to Norm's. read more

Love the classic diner look. This spot got good reviews so I was excited to eat here. I ordered cheese omelette with bacon and crispy hash browns. Well, here it is...the omelette was extremely overcooked, scorched and horrible tasting. The hash browns tasted like they were cooked on a dirty grill. Please check out the picture. Not sure how the cook thought it was acceptable to serve. My husband ordered chicken and waffles. It was a beautifully cooked meal. It actually made me jealous. Our waiter was nice and personable. A caveat to my review: My husband and I have differing opinions. If we averaged them out fairly, it would be a 3.5 from us. Since 3.5 isn't an option, I rounded up for "personality points" from the staff. Our first breakfast here I loved (waffles with blueberries and pecans) and my husband liked (breakfast burrito). We both found the coffee lackluster. What brought us back was the friendly vibe and the banter between the staff and not only the regulars but also us newbies. Service was super quick and friendly. On our second, most recent, visit, we waited about 30 minutes for breakfast dishes. I think they just got slammed, but it was mid-morning on a Thursday and felt like a long time to wait. Food was solid, nothing amazing. Vibe was still great. Prices were high--like $16-18 for a scramble with veggies and potatoes. But the coffee was still lackluster, and for my husband this is a dealbreaker. We wish them well but will be looking for other breakfast places when we eat together. However with the weird present owner who seems to never want to work because they are not often open and the way I was treated I will never go there again. I ordered scrambled eggs and wanted it made moist because I do not like jello type eggs, Remember this is an egg place, primarily serving eggs in all its forms when they decide to open. I got the scrambled eggs and they were as dried out as you can imagine. I told them about it immediately because I was sitting at the counter. I was immediately told by the nasty owner to not ever return. I truly miss the old Norm's which this no longer is. This is an extremely unfriendly restaurant that I will never return. Their food is not good and thus there is no reason to go there. The previous old Norm's that had several owners was the friendliest diner you could ever go to. We went a little of the beaten path to experience this "true diner" after a visit to Foxwoods. Probably more locals than us tourist as we entered and to me that's a win right there! Old school all the way from the no gruff waitresses to the basic breakfast staples and good coffee it was just as expected. Walk through the door, and it's almost like stepping into a simpler time. No tables available, so I sat at the counter right in front of Maestro Steven. He is to short order cooks what Tommy is to pinball. I opted for an omelet special w sliced corned beef, chunks of ham, and swiss. Eggggcellent, as were the nicely spiced home fries. My server, Dale, was perfect. In fact, the whole operation was like a well-oiled machine. Finally, Sweet Melissa, who hails from LA (lower Albany), rounded out the positive experience. This is what I call, my kind of place. Being from the NY/NJ area, we love our diners, especially the traditional looking ones. As soon as we walked in we were greeted with a warm welcome and told there was a 15 minute wait. About 10 minutes later we were welcomed in. You could immediately see the interaction between the staff and at least half the customers, to me that said, this was their usual place. That's typically a great sign. We had some basic breakfast food, Chocolate chip pancakes, blueberry pancakes, country fried steak and eggs (a family go to) and a Mediterranean omelette. Everything was delicious, but my country fried steak and eggs was one of the best I have ever had. After a few minutes with our food, both the waitress and the cook checked on us. By the time we left our interaction with the staff became quite friendly. They really know how to make a customer feel welcome. To me, this place is great! And I love small diners where they cook and handle the food in front of you because you know they have nothing to hide. I would highly recommend this place. I wish the owners the best of luck.
