Everything was right about this place. We ate on the sunny porch, then walked a few minutes to the train.

I got a s'mores iced latte ($7) and it was made in about 5 mins. The drink was made pretty well with a good chocolate and coffee balance. It was sweet but not overly sweet. I also got a cheese danish and they said they would toast it for me, unfortunately they seemed to have forgotten it and after about 15 mins I had to ask again and the warmed one up immediately. What a cute water view breakfast and lunch restaurant. The staff was so sweet. You order your food upfront and then provided with a number. The food is then brought to your table. Despite the staff saying 30 min we had our food in 20 minutes. The sandwiches were huge and delicious. The French fries were amazing the best I have had in a long while- hot and crunchy! We stopped by Muddy Waters Cafe this afternoon. As soon as we stepped inside we were immediately impressed by the space. In the far length of the cafe we could see The Long Island Sound and the trains passing by. What a view! They have a wide assortment of drinks, such as coffee, tea and smoothies. They have desserts and lunch options. I got their avocado toast and their made in house apple cider. It's a little strange the way the service works here. After ordering and paying for your order at the counter, you'll be given an order number, you may sit anywhere you like. However, on the loudspeaker they will announce your drink is ready, you may go get it, but the waitress will bring you your food. The avocado toast was a generous slice of sourdough bread, with smashed avocado and a fried egg on top. There was a ton of salt, it actually ruined the whole toast. The apple cider was very flavorful, fresh and lightly sweet. I got it iced. It came in a very generous sized cup. The patio is so beautiful. It is heated, airy and offers such a peaceful view. This place was a pleasant surprise. I'm not sure how long it's been here, but definitely aesthetically pleasing if you're into a coffee shop like that. (Bonus if you're a Red Sox fan, they have a little set up with figurines of Fenway). The option to sit in the back and overlook the port is nice. The food was good, service was very fast. We were there on a Wednesday at 10 and it was decently busy. The staff was very friendly and again, a very cute setting, plenty of seating. It is a first come first serve with seating. I ordered from their website to pickup and when I got there they didnt have 2 of the pastry items. I asked one of the ladies and she ignored me twice, then asked another girl and she said it probably wasnt ready yet ( my bagel sandwich and drink were ready but a piece of cake and muffin werent?!?). Another woman said the 2 items were sold out so I checked to see if I was refunded (I wasnt). When I asked about my refund for those out of stock items, the woman told me that I had to request a refund and that they dont just automatically refund you when the item you purchased is sold out... I obviously feel like thats bullshit and the lady then said i had to go to the app for a refund... I said I used the Muddy waters website so they should be able to refund me. She took a pic of my order and said her manager could refund me later. This is my third time going here and the second bad experience I have had with their customer service. The business should have a manager on every shift to be able to refund customers when the store oversells an item. Also the audacity to tell me I have to request a refund when THEY couldnt fill the order is insane. Before you spend your hard earned money here, think about going somewhere with common decency. This seems like a rude and entitled staff with horrible business practices. read more

A quick stop for food before heading out on the road. Served quickly and was made a special blend of coffee with a spritz of lavender. The server was drinking g k e and made it for me. It was delicious and I ran home and bought me some lavender syrup for my coffee. Sandwich was hugs and had to save half for later. Lettuce and all ingredients were very fresh. Nice interior with ample seating and very clean restrooms. Despite being abused by other impatient customers, the server was the epitome of service with a smile. I will definitely return. read more

A cafe right by the water with delicious food and drink. It's a popular spot, frequently has a long line to order and all tables are full, so get there early! I most recently had a capicola, egg and cheese sandwich here and enjoyed it. I tried the PB latte which definitely had notes of peanut butter without being overly sweet. There is outdoor seating which is lovely on a nice day, though since it is close to the train station you'll hear the occasional train come through. Interior has quite a few tables as well and is very clean. Decor is very nautical themed. Service friendly and food came out quickly. Right before leaving New London we passed by Muddy Waters Café to get some breakfast and we were not disappointed. We got black coffees which were excellent and even my husband who is an espresso snub loved their espresso and said it's one of the best espressos he's had so far. The croissants with the eggs and ham and the jalapeño and egg were both excellent per my husband and baby toddler. The was enjoyed by my mom because it was not sugary and she loved it. And she liked the chocolate croissant as well. I got a black coffee, which was pretty good and just a banana - but for gluten-free options, I saw that there were almond wraps which is pretty convenient - so if we're ever in town next time, we'll definitely hit this place again. The most interesting about this place are the artwork everywhere. The posters were very, very interesting and cars and boat displays everywhere. The Display for the Boston Red Sox was interesting. An old jukebox and the lighting fixtures add to the ambiance They're opening a space in the back that will have an ocean view (you can see it in my pics with the stacked chairs), which is something to look forward to next time we're in town. This place is packed, rightly so. Amazing food, varied menu, creative and tasty drinks. The coffee is good without any flavors, but their flavored lattes are great. I love coming here to study. Today we got the Green Dream Smoothie, the Nutella Latte, and the Mediterranean Wrap. I've had the wrap before and will continue getting it, and the drinks are worth getting again as well. The decor is incredible ever since they rebuilt after the fire. I could sit here for hours. Definitely worth coming in, and worth the wait even if the line is out the door! Edit: My wrap took 35 minutes to come out, it seemed like the kitchen was producing food items one at a time. But really still worth the wait, just be prepared! read more

My litmus test for coffee shops is very simple - an iced latte with oat milk. Sometimes I splurge with a dusting of cinnamon on top. I hadn't been to Muddy Waters since roughly '07, so I figured there was no time like the present to test out their lattes. I noticed right away that the interior is very clinical. All hard lines & bright lights. Very Millennial grey. Very HomeGoods. The opposite of cozy. There is, of course, a fake plant wall with a neon sign. Not my cup of tea, but I know that other folks gladly sip it. I ordered with an employee who didn't seem to care whether I lived or died & waited a short few minutes for my latte. It cost around $8 & sadly was not worth the price. The ratios were wonky, resulting in a weak & watery latte with very little ice. I didn't finish it. I have an overall issue with the over-modification of our 3rd places - see Ray Oldenburg's 1989 theory for more information - & worry about the adverse effects this trend might pose. I certainly am not pointing fingers at Muddy Waters for being the sole culprit, it seems like they're just following the Millennial minimalism trend. That being said, I caution any beloved coffee shops or bakeries or cafes against sanitizing away their coziness, even if it increases efficiency. I don't think it works out in the long run. read more

The vibe is immaculate in there. Have visited the area and here multiple times, however when it comes to the food I've never liked anything . You definitely pay for the ambiance. In the future I will continue to come for the aesthetic. I would opt to not get the food though. Stick to a pastry. Even then, nothing to write home about but pretty good. A great little spot in New London! Perfectly located near the train station and ferry docks, making it an ideal stop before starting a trip. It was busy on a Saturday morning (for good reason), so seating was a bit tight and the line to order moved slowly. After placing our order, the food came out quickly and it was totally worth the wait. The menu has a wide selection of pastries, lighter breakfast items, and more hearty options. (If you are around for lunch, they also have a great selection of salads and sandwiches.) The flavored lemonades are amazing and super refreshing, and the coffee is bold and delicious. I love visiting Muddy Waters. It is such a cute little cafe and such a wonder in the summer due to the comfortable outdoor seating. In the winter they have a plethora of hot chocolate type drinks. I ordered a black coffee which was really yummy as well as a mocha which was perfect. Not too sweet, and delicious espresso used. Some of my favorite coffee in CT. I'm so glad they've opened back up. Their treats are also wonderful. I had their cookie dough chocolate cake which was so good I may end up calling to see if I could order the whole thing for a birthday or something. I was honestly blown away from it. Their danishes are good too. I've also had an egg sandwich with turkey bacon on a plain bagel here and it was good. Nothing particularly special about it but do really appreciate them offering turkey bacon as that's unfortunately not super common for places and I don't eat pork. I enjoyed that they had sriracha and other hot sauces to add. A breakfast sandwich is only ever "good" or "bad" in my opinion unless it's like super fancy. And this was good so perfect. The people are really kind and welcoming when you enter although a little apologetic since it's always so busy on the weekends. But it's never a problem for me to wait since it's such a cute space with a running ship theme and lovely area to sit that I forgot to take a photo of. I really do recommend stopping in here for some really great coffee, a sweet treat and maybe a sandwich if you're hungry. It's got all you'd want from a cafe. read more

This is a beautiful coffee shop with lots of things inside to look at and talk about. It's also quite popular so was pretty busy today. The link moves quickly though so wasn't a big deal. They have lots of food, pastry and beverage options to choose from and they all sound delicious by the descriptions. I tried one of the spring specials, a Carrot Cake latte. It was well made and the flavors definitely made me think of carrot cake! I love that in the spring They are rebuilding the back deck so I'm looking forward to coming back to check that out and try some food. The staff were pleasant. Stopped by for coffee & a yogurt parfait on my way to the new New London Community Recreation center. It's been lightly remodeled since my last visit. Enjoyed a yogurt parfait & a hot mocha on their covered deck at 11AM. Warning - the parfaits are usually gone by this time. Perfect mocha - harbor is gorgeous on this early October day. The trains coming in and leaving add to the ambiance. Clientele is New London eclectic - two students just left for the train & the gentleman at the next table is wearing a white jean jacket & cowboy hat with workboots. What a great day! read more

Been away since 2021. The place was renovated after a fire and I was pleased to see a menu with prices to know ahead of time what I would be paying for a bagel with cream cheese. The sign reads: New York Bagel w/ $3.50 immediately underneath it lists the spreads that come with that price (w/$3.50).....Cream Cheese, Butter, Jelly, Hummus, etc. After a very long wait in line I ordered two bagels. One with vegy cream cheese, the other with herb cream cheese totaling $7.00, right? (2*3.50) The man-bunner who rang me up added two different charges for the cream cheeses on either bagel. Since when is a posted cost not the charge levied when you place your order? And, If you're going to surreptitiously overcharge your customer why would vegy cream cheese spread cost $.75 and herb cream cheese spread be $.50? When I called into question why I was being charged extra for something advertised as inclusive of the cost of a bagel the cashier told me the cream cheese cost extra. When I asked for his rational for charging me two different prices for different cream cheese flavors he just asked me if I wanted my receipt. WOW!!! Of course I did!!!!...... For no other reason than to share it here, on YELP. Don't get me wrong. Muddy Waters is a popular place built on it's PREVIOUS owners solid reputation. There is definitely a demand that suggests someone else nearby could open early and sling bagels and baked goods at a reasonable, up-front cost and stick to it rather than sticking it to customers at the whim of whoever rang up my sale today. Way tooooooo much pepper on Lust salad I've been eating Love/Lust salad for decades now. The MAIN reason they are Love/Lust is because of the Garlic. I had a Lust salad today and all you could taste was pepper. I may be wrong, but i don't recall the original Love/Lust salad even having pepper. I want to taste garlic, not pepper. Especially seeing the pepper had a kick to it. Suggestion, either eliminate the pepper or it put down with the list of ingredients! Or have the order taker ask if you would like pepper. I want a Lust salad, not a pepper salad. Besides this suggestion, the salad was very good. read more

This review is for the newly renovated Muddy Waters that opened in March 2024. We've been twice and were happy both times. The space feels more modern and open, yet still celebrates New London history. Thank goodness for the covered back porch on nice days! The menu offers breakfast and lunch options with specialty drinks. The first visit, I had the tuna grain bowl. I loved the flavors and the dressing. The tuna was slightly too raw, and I was wondering if I'd get sick (I didn't). The earth burger was my second meal, and it was great! The bun was soft, and I loved the layered veggies in top. You have to order a side separately, which isn't listed. My husband ordered the love salad with chicken both times. The size of that chicken! He loved it, hence ordering it twice. I came here on a Saturday morning to grab coffee with a couple of friends after breakfast. I wasn't feeling like getting a coffee so I ended up getting a smoothie. When we walked in, there was a slight line to place an order and get your order but the line moved pretty steadily. Even though their bulletin board menu says smoothie, it doesn't say what kind of smoothies they have... Upon asking, they said they have strawberry, dragonfruit, and raspberry. I went with the dragon fruit smoothie since I've never had that flavor before. I was honestly not sure what to expect for the smoothie. It tasted like a milkshake and not really a dragon fruit...
