Upon entering, we found the wait staff chatting with each other at the seats or serving the handful of customers in the dining room. Decor was heavily coffee influenced-- from the wallpaper to the wall art, it's obvious a cup of joe plays a role here. We ordered a smattering of breakfast dishes and of course, two of the poutine dishes. Overall the food was just ok, not memorable. The pancakes had a nice texture but were largely flavorless; maple syrup helped somewhat but that ended up being the only flavor. Eggs were serviceable, potatoes were fine. The poutine was okay. I've had much better in Canada. Theirs felt like a beef based gravy out on top of French fries, with pockets of cheese curds, which were the better part of the meal. The Quebecois poutine was better, with added ham & veggies to add some complexity. The downside of our visit came as we approached their closing hour of 2pm. The crew started cleaning up and vacuuming around us as we were still eating before close. I had a single cup of coffee, and when I asked for a refill, the waitress apologized and said they poured it out because it was getting close to closing time. Ironic, considering the amount of pro-coffee memorabilia around the restaurant. We hadn't even hit closing but pouring out the coffee while a table was still eating didn't cross anyone's mind. (Nor cleaning around us, passively encouraging us to leave.) The coffee wasn't removed from the bill in recognition that maybe they made a mistake. Overall.. eh. I was hoping for more, but it is what it is. I'm sure it's fine for the regulars, but this wasn't worth the long trip for what I was hoping was a callback to Quebec faire, in Connecticut.

Perfectly fine quick breakfast spot…read more Came here on the fly, looking for new breakfast spots and found this one on my feed. The parking situation is a little weird, there's some spots in front or by the side, but they are not really marked well. But there's a lot of spaces for the actual dining space. The inside is simple but clean, lots of seats for the space and a reasonable display for their pastries and donuts. The menu is simple and the options are low. It's very much designed to be a quick breakfast spot. I opted for one of their donuts and a latte, with a French toast platter. Food came out quickly, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. The breakfast was okay. The donut was large, cakey but freshly made. The strawberry frosting was a little heavy on the extract which gave a chemically taste to the frosting, but it wasn't off putting just noticeable. The French toast was slightly undercooked, but I do enjoy custardity bites so it was good enough. The eggs were also underdone, but I just ignored those. The turkey bacon was crisp and the home fries were seasoned very well. Unlike other home fries I have had, these ones actually had flavor. As a breakfast spot, it does well enough for the local crowd. When done properly, the food put out at this location can be good if not great. I'm fairly confident if I made them aware of my issues, they would resolve them without fail. If you need a quick breakfast and happen to be in east hartford near the police station, his place works for that quick meal. It isn't fancy, but it's basic food done right.

The Red Cabin

Tried again, still pretty good but need some refinement…read more On my retries of breakfast spots. Went to get a coffee at the cozy coffee spot close by, and decided to give these guys another try. Server was a little over friendly. Not a negative but it does give me pause. I do try to be just another customer when I do my treks, and overeagerness makes it seem like my experience may be over conflated. Then again, the chances of me having clout are minimal. So I ordered my bananas foster French toast and real maple syrup and wait for my food. I get it quickly, then it gets scooped up because they forgot the caramel sauce. Gets re-delivered quickly and I dig in. French toast is done well, no off flavors and bread was properly soaked. Bananas were grilled and jammy, caramel sauce was tossed on bananas and whipped cream was from a can but okay as a garnish. I get the idea of what they were going for, and appreciate the properly warmed fruits and cook of the French toast itself. To me, bananas foster is banana, brown sugar, rum, and butter. The brown sugar makes the caramel and the rum adds a woody, smoky element to the sauce. Butter adds richness and body, enhancing mouthfeel. This dish has the essence of the dish it's named for, but is lacking the flavor punch. My thought: take maple syrup which has that woody taste. Mix butter and brown sugar and boil it to a thick syrup state. Make that a drizzle, and stripe it across the dish with the warmed up banana. Skip the canned whipped cream, or offer fresh whipped cream or a small dish of vanilla ice cream with the drizzle on top as well. You get the flavors of the namesake dish, the tasty bananas and the great French toast. That would make the dish stellar. As of right now, it's pretty good. It's a perfectly fine breakfast spot, does a good French toast and the price is a little high but not extensively so. The only problem I see is there's a lot of fast casual breakfast spots on that stretch of road. They will need to innovate to avoid losing business to the surrounding shops. If they offer superior quality, they may make themselves a mainstay. There's many paths they can take though, this is just one trekking foodie's random ideas

Paired together with high quality eggs and perfectly toasted with butter toast, there was not one bite left. I couldn't stop eating it. I was almost sad with my last bite .. but I was about to explode anyway since it was a very generous portion. I'm just a glutton when it comes to good savory foods.
