The Cosmic Omelet is a breakfast, brunch and lunch restaurant that opened in Manchester, Connecticut in October 2003. It was founded by Tracy Devine. When she purchased the small restaurant space in Manchester, it was already an existing restaurant called "The Smoking Cafe". Just before the purchase, the Connecticut General Assembly had passed a smoking for restaurants, which was going to go into effect soon. Many of the regular customers were smokers, but Devine soon won them over with her menu of "out of this world" food. The new business was dubbed "The Cosmic Omelet" and by 2005, a beautiful cosmic-themed mural had been painted on the walls of the restaurant. Although the menu also features lunch items, it is the breakfast dishes that keep people coming back. Many of the dishes are named after and designed by staff or long standing customers. If you spot the word "cosmic" anywhere in the menu, it is code for "made with cream cheese". My family and I had brunch at the Cosmic Omelet over St. Patrick's Day weekend. I was first introduced to the place by one of my best friends who grew up in Manchester, and I've been coming back ever since. This was the first visit for my two sons. There was a little bit of a wait for a table, but there's plenty to do to pass the time. If customers follow the "yellow brick road" painted on the floor, it will lead you to a small arcade as well as a funky art gallery space. We all had a fun time exploring until our table was ready. They had a lot of delicious St. Patrick's Day themed specials during our visit. I had the "Sheep Go To Heaven" (shepherd's pie omelet w/ ground beef, corn, mashed potatoes, cheddar & Guinness gravy), my wife had the "Fiesta Omelet" (sausage, onions, peppers, cheddar, side of salsa & sour cream), our sons shared the "Sweet Cream (Green) Pancakes", and we also ordered sides of "Hashbrowns" and "Corned Beef Hash" for the table. As usual, everything was fantastic! The omelets were chock full of delicious ingredients, the pancakes were perfectly fluffy, and the home fries were out of this world! Cosmic Omelet has been a local breakfast staple in Manchester for years, and that still seems to be the case. The look of the place is still a mix of quirky diner and casual neighborhood spot, but over the years they have expanded quite a bit into neighboring spaces. It is noticeably larger than it used to be many years ago, but it still feels like the same locally-owned, friendly, affordable, quirky, casual, bustling place with fun decor that it has always been. The food is certainly also a big reason people keep coming back. If you have never been, you will quickly notice that some of the omelets are creative and a little unusual. A few include things like cream cheese, which might sound odd at first but often works surprisingly well. Of course they also have plenty of classic breakfast options if you want something more traditional. In general the food has been consistently good. The place can get busy, especially during peak breakfast hours, which says a lot about how popular it still is with regulars. Once you are seated though, the service tends to move along quickly and the staff are friendly in that slightly quirky way that fits the personality of the place. Overall Cosmic Omelet is still one of the better breakfast spots in the area. Good food, lots of personality, and clearly a place that has built a strong following over the years. Although I have moved much further away since my 2009 review, I will still stop in when I am back in the area. read more

Not bad, but still lacking I recall a time where this place was great. Portions were plentiful, flavors were present and staff were very nice. The special breads were great toasted with butter, and the crepe style omelette was a mass of fillings and tender egg. It's not that anymore. The seasoning is light, the fillings not as seasoned and lacking pop. Even the home fries are just missing that little bit of salt needed to give them any semblance of flavor. Portions are reasonable, little pricy for the quality but still plenty of room food for most people. It's still really popular, and it's not bad as a breakfast joint. My rose tinted glasses in full effect, saddened by the drop in quality. but it's easy to look back at better times and reminisce. It's still a decent breakfast spot even if the place was better before. It's not a go-to or even a regular check in spot for me, but they will do just fine. read more

We stopped here late on a Saturday after a nice Costco trip. The place is known for its omelets (obvi) and its funky decor. We were quoted 20-25 wait but were seated in 10 not bad at all. Waitress was friendly & attentive and recommended the hash browns which were a good recommendation. I had the sausage biscuit gravy & eggs with the hash browns, and an iced tea. The sausage gravy was a little more gelatinous than I would have liked but all in all tasty. Hash browns are seasoned and have a little peppery zing. We split a muffin special of raspberry white chocolate grilled and that was delicious! The place is in need of a really good cleaning though, and that always makes me nervous about how clean the kitchen is. I went there with a friend for the first time this morning. It was packed, but our wait for a table was short. I had an incredibly delicious Memorial Day omelette special with hot dog, baked beans, cheese and coleslaw. My friend had a more traditional omelette. They were both spectacular. However, the coffee had a strange bitter aftertaste and the restaurant itself was really dirty. My friend, who is a former restaurant manager was taken aback by the lack of cleanliness. I've been to Cosmic Omelet twice, maybe 12 years apart. After a lack luster first visit, I wasn't inclined to return until some friends insisted they really wanted to go. After the second visit, I stand by my first impression. The menu options for omelets are impressive if you're into omelets, though they didn't look especially impressive when plated. Lots of ingredients you can include, including quite a few with cream cheese which I bet are tasty. I had chocolate chip pancakes and they were legitimately the worst pancakes I have ever had. It's hard to mess up pancakes so bad that they're inedible, but they somehow managed it. I couldn't even eat half. Bad flavor, bad texture. 0/10 stars. The restaurant itself is incredibly popular. There is always a wait, so people clearly love it. Our server was friendly and did a decent job despite clearly being very busy. They do have a funky museum/gallery of weird artwork in the back that was neat to look at. The whole place has big Grateful Dead vibes. It feels a little grubby to me. read more

My husband and I are new to the area and have been looking for a good breakfast spot. We found this place on google and loved the pictures and atmosphere so we stopped in for a quick breakfast with our young son. The place itself was very quaint and the ambience was charming, but that's kind of where the buck stops. Our waitress was inattentive and kept trying to walk away before we were done placing our order. While we understand it is a busy place, it didn't seem busy enough to rush us through our meal. The food itself was some of the worst breakfast I've ever experienced. We ordered 2 omelets and pancakes for our son. The pancakes were floury and inedible, and the omelets and home fries tasted like someone prepared them with hands that had smoked several cigarettes and then touched the food unwashed. My husband ate half his meal and was sick to the degree of vomiting upon leaving the restaurant. Very disappointed, will not be returning. read more

This place was super unique and cool. We were greeted almost immediately and put in our name. There's an "art gallery" in the back with actual art to purchase- but the walls themselves are art. It felt like a visual treasure hunt as we waited for our table. When we were sat and looked at the menu, every item sounded delicious. It's 2 sided- all breakfast. I went with the Fajita omelet with hash browns "loaded" and toast. It was great. The loaded hash brown was actually buffalo chicken, bleu cheese and ranch on top. I couldn't see any bleu cheese on mine but it didn't take away from the dish. The omelet was interesting as the ingredients were rolled in the omelet. I thought it'd be spicier due to the jalapeños but I think they forgot to add them. I added some sriracha they keep at the table and it was perfect. My husband also got an omelet in burrito form with a grilled English muffin and raved about the flavors and balance of ingredients to egg. We can't wait to go back. My only takeaway was the art gallery floor was a little dirty feeling, and the room felt it as well. They have a wonderful selection of things for breakfast- specials, so many unusual omelettes ( Tracy's omelette is my favorite), 2 different types of potatoes with your eggs & also you can get the grits, which are usually good. ( one time, I thought they were too sweet & asked about that; answer was depends who/how it was made that day). The only reason not a 5 is that I've always 'felt' the place is a little dirty. I came here on a Sunday around noon because I heard good things about this place. I noticed this place had a quirky fun vibe. I was seated within a few minutes after entering. The hostess was very pleasant. I ordered a coffee and it was brought to me quickly. Tasted great. I ordered the Veggie Benny with home fries. It arrived very quickly. It was absolutely perfect! I finished my meal and looked at the bill. I was charged $12+ for the Veggie Benny but I was expecting $9+ because I planned ahead by looking at the online menu on Google. The server explained that they had to go up on their prices due to inflation and that the online menu hadn't been updated. I asked to see the paper menu and found that the price was updated there. No problem, but the online menu prices should be updated. I will definitely return for the great food and friendly staff! read more

The service was prompt but my friend found something like hard - felt like a tooth in her omelet along with a hair. Then proceeded to find another hair in her hash browns. My other friend ordered an omelet and it came with stray piece of corn in it.... She is allergic to it. All the server offered us was a $10 discount... The restaurant's most popular breakfast items are omlettes, French toast and egg Benedicts. I ordered a vegetable omlette and is one of the best vegetable omlette I have every eaten. The place was meant to take you outside your world and I to a galaxy of art by following their yellow brick road to an art gallery featuring the work of local artists. However I don't see the plan executed well. A budgeted capital expenditure with community support may help bring their vision back to life. Modernization of the restaurant with better ambience couple with high quality food they serve could increase the customer volume. The place is pretty popular as I ended up showing up at 10am on a work day and the restaurant had limited seating. The service was quick, friendly and efficient. Parking is available right outside. The upkeep of the space could definitely be better and it's a little outdated but they shine where it counts - the food. A coworker suggested the place and I was happy to drive a little out of way to break bread with the locals. I ordered a three-pig omelet. The omelet was large and filled with ample amounts of sausage, bacon, and ham. The dish is served with toast and hash browns. The omelet was very good. Love, love, love this place. Best breakfast in the area and Tracy and her staff are second to none. I've been eating here for years and the quality of the food and the service is at a level than others can only hope to attain. While the pandemic and COVID have taken their toll on the menu and the hours they have hung in there and made it through because they are just that good. I'm not sure if they'll bring the small lunch menu back but I think I've only had lunch there a few times (out of the several dozen I've been there). This place is mainly a breakfast place and they do that exceptionally well. In addition to the regular menu they have specials for omelets, muffins and twists on regular breakfast dishes. I've had quite a lot of the regular and special items and I have never, ever had a bad meal here. They have a large selection of omelets, basic combos and specialty ones named after regular customers but you can get any combination of ingredients they have made to order with great service from a great staff. The biscuits and gravy is another great option, two eggs served with sausage gravy and biscuits, and your choice of home friends, hash browns or grits.
