Redfish Nouvelle
Lauren B.

I am a huge fan of Mill on the River. It is the perfect spot for date night or catching up with friends. The cocktails are delicious, with a wide variety if offerings. For dinner, you can never go wrong with the Redfish Nouvelle. The flavors are exceptional, and it has become my go-to dish over the years. I would recommend making a reservation, especially on the weekends.

This place was a big surprise... in a positive way. I thought it would be good but this was better than good. I was also expecting it to be very pricy and it wasn't that bad. The setting both inside and out is beautiful, comfortable ... very well done Here are some of the dishes we ordered ; Lobster pasta was outstanding , big order and lotsa' lobstah' , reasonably priced for that much lobster! Pumpkin ravioli was excellent. The chicken parm dish wasn't feeling love from that family member. The beet salad was very good ... also the French onion soup was very good Our server was fantastic, friendly and did a great job. This is a must try place if you are in town .

went to this restaurant for my boyfriend's and I 5 year anniversary and it was so beautiful! It was decorated beautifully but the waterfall over the bridge you need to cross was absolutely gorgeous. I tried their Blood Orange Cosmo and they know how to make an excellent drink! For apps, we tried the Antipasto for 2 and we were blown away...the spicy eggplant was delightful, the buffalo mozzarella was so fresh and everything on that plate was delish. for my entree i got their Short Rib special which features sweet mash and cabbage and it had such a lovely flavor. my boyfriend tried the chicken vodka pasta and we were both impressed by the taste and quality. we ended with a slice of "big ass chocolate cake" and it's literally half of a whole cake, they were not kidding! it was a little dry but still good. I can't wait to come back here!

The Mill on the River is a great local restaurant. They've been around for many decades and are obviously doing something right. The location is very scenic with a view of a waterfall. There are many food options. The calamari fritti comes with hot peppers which is interesting. The classic sausage rigatoni, wienerschnitzel (with German potato salad, chilled cucumber salad, lingonberries), and baked stuffed shrimp entrees were all delicious. They stock a local blueberry cider that's great too. I had a Glenmorangie Nectar d'Or to drink at the end, which reminded me of some 18-year old Speysides that I had many years ago. Our server seemed a bit curt and harried at first, as he was taking care of many tables, but no real problems. Overall, it was a fine meal.

Food great! Ambiance above average. Service so-so. Drink was good. Soda was average. Quick reservation from last night to this evening. Outside dining nice.

Pork chops milanese

Beautiful place, indoor and outdoor, especially from out of state visitor who are not used to that kind of decor. Reception was friendly and warm. Jose, our server, was great, nice and attentive, courteous. Food was very good. The pork chops milanese was seasoned perfectly and nice portion that I not even tasted the potatoes, I was focused in destroying the chops. :) I had good time. Finally the chocolate cake was super big, enough for 6 people. It was creamy and delicious.

Came on a Sunday and they only offered Sunday brunch for $25. It comes with a drink, entree and dessert. They start you off with a bread basket. The it contain one muffin and 4 small danish. The muffin was tasty but cold. I had the eggs Benedict with steak. It had two perfect cooked poached eggs, delicious home fries, and a small sandwich stake. Everything was good. I finished it off with a scoop of ice cream.

4 - First time and definitely not the last I had a really pleasant first visit. The staff was super friendly and even set me up outside when I asked small gesture, big points. Started with calamari, raw oysters, and Rockefeller oysters (first time having oysters btw), and wow fresh, flavorful, and now a new fave. The calamari especially? Crispy, buttery, and somehow still melt-in-your-mouth. The ahi tuna was excellent and paired perfectly with the Ferrari-Carano Fumé Blanc. Vibes were great, food was solid across the board. Not a full 5 yet only because I haven't hit that one dish that makes me obsessed but I'm willing to try the whole menu to find it. I'll be back.

Grilled Grilled North Atlantic Salmon - with mashed potato and coleslaw

Excellent setting, great ambience and one of the best quality food in Hartford area. Went with some friends. Mostly ordered pick of the day - grouper and were not disappointed. They loved it ! I had seafood martini - which was refreshing & good but kind of small size and not a full meal so I ordered Salmon. Salmon came with mashed potato and coleslaw salad and was delicious ! Loved the place and food ! Service was excellent !! We all enjoyed it a lot and will surely come next time !

Prime Rib - specialty of the night, slow cooked 8 hours with a baked potato and seasonal vegetables
Jessica M.

We went to the Mill on the River for our anniversary, looking for something a little out of the way due to the many college graduations in the area. The Mill is a delightfully relaxing experience with seating outside on the deck that overlooks the river and inside seating. We had our choice this night and chose outdoor seating. We started with the Garlic & Gorgonzola Bread which was the perfect size for two. We weren't ravenous and it was enough to satiate us while we enjoyed a drink and the view. I opted for a spicy margarita which was delicious. I wish there had been a salt rim, but that only would have enhanced it. My husband got one of the nightly specials, a slow cooked prime rib with baked potato and seasonal vegetables. It was positively perfect, easy to cut and melted in your mouth. I initially chose a different special, the Lazy Man's Lobster with risotto but it was out already, so I opted for the lobster pasta. The sauce was so thick and creamy, it was a real treat for someone like myself who doesn't usually partake in ricer sauces. There was plenty of lobster and the asparagus was al dente, which is my preference. We didn't get dessert, but I saw a few coming by and they looked delicious. Our waiter was super friendly and nice. When we declined dessert he offered another drink or water while we relaxed at the table before we left. Not rushing us out was a huge plus given I'm sure they were eager to turnover the table. We're not from the area but will keep it on our list!

Seafood Martini
Tom M.

One of the few restaurants that has a variety of seafood options in Hartford. The seafood martini is really good with the seaweed salad as the base and the lobster and crab was fresh but also small portions. The seafood boat was the special and was deluged in sauce and slightly overcooked so the salmon was quite dry. Should have gotten the sea bass which is much better. The escargot was warm with the right blend of garlic butter. The views are one of the main reasons for the restaurant's popularity. Plenty of parking in a private lot.

Roast Prime Rib of Black Angus Beef

Beautiful place. Expensive prices. Very good service. And most importantly, interesting and delicious food choices. Even the dinner rolls were delicious. They will allow you to bring a cake, but will charge you a per person cutting fee. And they add 20% tip to bills w parties of 6 or more.

scallops

This is one of those places you wish you could like, or like far better, reminiscent of the old "Mill on the Floss" near North Adams or "Mistrals" in Manchester, both chef-owned, both equipped with classic flavors, atmosphere, and service. Alas, at Mill On The River, the service feels like a sports bar, reducing its 5-star location and competent, 1980's-redolent, menu to something more slapstick than romantic or elite. Guests leave with a whiplash from the juxtaposition.

I'm back! I love this place! It's quiet here ) it's only a Tuesday) but we're late (arrived at 9:15…read morePM). There is no shortage of decor here! I like the huge carafe of ice water and the spicy potato chips! For my first drink, I'm having a Negroni. A negroni is an Italian cocktail, made of equal parts gin, vermouth rosso (red, semi-sweet), and Campari, generally served with ice, and commonly garnished with an orange slice or orange peel. It is considered an apéritif. They also have an Obi Wan Negroni made with Cold Brew Infused Campari instead. For my first food item, I'm having the Cream of Mushroom soup with chicken. Cream of mushroom soup is a simple type of soup where a basic roux is thinned with creamor milk and then mushrooms or mushroom brothare added. This is delicious! It's nice and hot with a lot of shredded chicken. For my entree, I'm having the Brussels Sprout Salad made with shaved Brussels sprouts, spring mix, bacon, pomegranate drizzle, silvered almonds, shaved Parmesan and lemon vinaigrette dressing. Look at the height of this! This tastes great! I am also having a side of mushy peas. Mushy peas are a traditional British side dish of marrowfat peas that are cooked until soft and mashed into a mush. The dish is especially popular in Northern England and the Midlands, and often eaten with fish and chips or served as part of "pie and peas". Here's a quick overview of mushy peas: Ingredients** Traditionally made with dried marrowfat peas, but can be substituted with frozen peas or green split peas. I love this! It's nice and hot.,What a rare treat! This is hard to find anywhere! I'm also having a side of cold slaw. Coleslaw, or "slaw" in North America, is a side dish of shredded cabbage with a vinaigrette or mayo-based dressing. The word "coleslaw" comes from the Dutch term koolsla, meaning "cabbage salad". Recipes vary by region and can include additional ingredients like carrots, apples, raisins, or celery. Coleslaw originated in the Netherlands in the 18th century, but references to similar cabbage salads appear in ancient Greek and Roman medical texts. This is the best! Nice, thick dressing! For my last drink, I'm having a Godfather. The Godfather is a sweet and strong cocktail that blends Scotch whisky and amaretto liqueur. It's typically served in an old-fashioned glass over ice and can be garnished with an orange twist. The drink became popular in the 1970s disco scene and is named after the 1972 film starring Marlon Brando and Al Pacino. Some say bartender Joe Scialom created the Godfather to capture the movie's spirit. This is done just right! Good job! What a great meal here!

Atmosphere/Appearance: Set right downtown Manchester on Main Street is this gem where Lucky Taco once stood. It echoes the standard British pubs and taverns from across the pond with deep yellow lighting, woods, exposed brick walls and open floorplan kind of vibe. It was lively, energetic and welcoming! Service: Lara took excellent care of us and she was very helpful! I had no issues at all. Food/Drinks: On the table when we arrived was an Irn Bru which is a SUPER popular drink sold in Scotland, often beating Coca-Cola in sales. It tasted like orange licorice, but it was actually pretty decent. Our first appetizer was an order of Crisps which were like thick cut potato chips with some garlic parmesan seasonings which I actually enjoyed! There was plenty of flavor from each component involved. Next up was the 007 which was their spin on the martini James Bond orders! In it is Wheatley Vodka, Bombay Gin, and English Tea Infused Lillet Blanc. It tasted like a dirty martini and was pretty strong! Smooth as well. I enjoyed it. Next up was a dish called Toad In The Hole which is Yorkshire pudding stuffed with smoked sausage then topped with caramelized onions and gravy. I have never seen anything like this before, but it was so strange, but pretty decent! The Yorkshire pudding was a bit eggy and dense. The gravy was a must though, since the other components of the dish lacked the salt that I was seeking. Next up was the Cloth Of Gold Old which is an Old Fashion with a twist which contained Old Forester, fresh lemon and honey. I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure why the mention of Old Fashion was on the menu unless this is supposed to differ from an "Old Fashioned". No matter, moving on. Next up were the Potato Pom Pom which are fired potato balls served with a house-made cheddar cheese sauce. It sounds like a simple dish. The cheese was thick, majorly cheddar-y. I really, really liked these! They tasted like a fancy tater tot. The potato inside was so soft and tender and the exterior was so crispy. My last drink of the night was the Bramble On Rose which is their take on a 1980's classic created in Soho, London. In it is Bombay Gin, fresh lemon, rose water and blackberry syrup. This was my favorite drink of the night. It was fresh, had some herbal flavors and the rose flavor made itself known. I really, really liked this drink and would certainly order it again. Lastly, the quintessential Fish & Chips! It's Atlantic cod in a brown ale batter, served with musky peas, chips, tartar sauce and a curry sauce. The curry sauce was surprisingly fantastic. I was blown away and absolutely needed more of it. The mushy peas resembled guacamole, but I had no idea how I was supposed to eat them. Lol. Were they a sauce? I don't know, but they tasted exactly how you'd think they'd taste. The fish was also fantastic. It was light, yet greasy and crispy. Value: The most expensive thing on the menu is $22.00. This place is not expensive at all so you certainly won't break the bank. Portions are decent size too. In conclusion, I absolutely enjoyed myself here and highly recommend you (reading this) to check it out! British food is... unpredictable if I must throw a word on it. Lol. Like, I almost couldn't predict what some of this stuff would taste like because I had never had anything like it before! Now, I'm a believer!

The Boathouse sits…read moreright on the Connecticut River and functions as both practical boathouse (lower level) and event space (upper level). The parking was incredibly convenient and directions to the Boathouse itself were very clear. We did have a small spot of difficulty finding the door to go to the upper level however. Once upstairs, the view of the CT River, East Hartford, and Hartford was spectacular. The late summer afternoon sun plus faint breeze made for a perfectly comfortable time. People mingled at standing tables and around the benches on the upper deck (and there were a respectable number of benches, which isn't often the case). Inside the event space were polished wooden floors and high ceilings. A coworker noted the restrooms were somewhat oddly placed behind a long hallway closed off by a door and there were some cobwebs in the window frames, but otherwise the space was quite nice. The staff at the bar on the deck poured wine just shy of the adjective "liberal" which was great. However, some other coworkers had to request adjustments of the food arrangement to prevent cross-contamination for those with allergies (adjustments were made promptly). The food - seasonal tapenade for appetizers and build-your-own pasta bar for the main - were well done otherwise with a good array of options. On the whole, a respectable event space on a scenic river. There were other groups actively using the rowing space/lower level, but you could barely tell because the upper level was high enough away.
