visited Mill on the River on Mother's Day and unfortunately the experience did not live up to the price or expectations. From the moment we arrived, the front desk area felt disorganized and overcrowded. The young hostesses were not very welcoming and didn't greet guests with a smile or provide direction on where to stand or wait, which made the entrance experience awkward and chaotic. There is no bathroom downstairs so you would have to go upstairs for the restrooms The restaurant was offering a $70 prefix menu, which honestly did not feel worth the cost. For that price, you only received soup or salad, an entrée, and dessert. I really think an appetizer should have been included considering the price point, especially for a special occasion like Mother's Day. We were seated downstairs near the kitchen, and it was extremely warm and uncomfortable down there during the meal. On a positive note, the service itself was fairly quick, and our waiter was very attentive and friendly, which was appreciated. Overall though, the atmosphere, organization, and value for the money left us disappointed. We went for a holiday lunch with friends, expecting a quality experience. The food was not up to par and was grossly overpriced; the listing should be $$$. I like seafood and have heard good things. I ordered a crab cake appetizer and baked stuffed shrimp as my entree. The crab cake was lots of "cake" and very little crab. Crumbly and bland, the only decent part was the drizzle it was plated on. The shrimp was simply awful. The coleslaw could easily be something they picked up at the supermarket. The "side" of peas (likely frozen) in rice was the kind of thing that a kid would be served in a school cafeteria - and they wouldn't eat it either. A restaurant at this level should be ashamed to serve this flavorless concoction. The shrimp was overcooked (and rubbery); I still don't know what that slice of ? was on the second shrimp - the one with the lemon. The "stuffing" was a flavorless, soggy, bready mess. This was not what I would expect from any self respecting restaurant, let alone one that thinks it is justified in charging what they do. (I did get a taste of the eggplant side from my wife's plate and that was pretty good. That's the one star.) read more

I am a huge fan of Mill on the River. It is the perfect spot for date night or catching up with friends. The cocktails are delicious, with a wide variety if offerings. For dinner, you can never go wrong with the Redfish Nouvelle. The flavors are exceptional, and it has become my go-to dish over the years. Came here for Mother's Day, it's a cute venue and people were friendly but the prix fix menu was way overpriced. It was a soup/salad, entree and a dessert, ended up being $85-90 a person without drinks. Dishes were smaller than their usual size (lamb leg was already cut up not the actual leg they give for the regular entree). Their normal entrees are around $30 so way overpriced, probably will not be back. read more

The setting both inside and out is beautiful, comfortable ... very well done Here are some of the dishes we ordered ; Lobster pasta was outstanding , big order and lotsa' lobstah' , reasonably priced for that much lobster! Pumpkin ravioli was excellent. The chicken parm dish wasn't feeling love from that family member. The service was good -- genuinely no complaints there. But the food quality was severely lacking for the price point. We started with the cheese platter, which looked like someone had sliced chunks off a Cracker Barrel brick -- essentially just cheddar in various forms. It came accompanied by exactly 3 grapes, a small handful of candied walnuts, a tiny dollop of fig jelly, and some crackers we couldn't even finish. For $20, I expected brie, goat cheese, blue cheese -- something interesting. For five dollars more I could have gotten a fabulous cheese platter elsewhere that would have put this to shame. This looked like the lunch lady threw it together. The pecan crusted salmon was okay, but the advertised honey mustard sauce was undetectable. The small scoop of mashed potatoes on the side were over-seasoned, there was no vegetable, and the coleslaw was questionable enough that we sent it back untouched. Hoping dessert would redeem the meal, I ordered the gluten-free banana walnut cake after watching impressive-looking slices come out to other tables. What arrived was cookie-sized. The two of us had about three bites each and it was gone. Extremely disappointing -- I could have made better myself. The wine was good, and the setting is genuinely charming -- the covered bridge, water fountain, and dam are nice. But charm doesn't justify these prices for this food. went to this restaurant for my boyfriend's and I 5 year anniversary and it was so beautiful! It was decorated beautifully but the waterfall over the bridge you need to cross was absolutely gorgeous. I tried their Blood Orange Cosmo and they know how to make an excellent drink! For apps, we tried the Antipasto for 2 and we were blown away...the spicy eggplant was delightful, the buffalo mozzarella was so fresh and everything on that plate was delish. for my entree i got their Short Rib special which features sweet mash and cabbage and it had such a lovely flavor. my boyfriend tried the chicken vodka pasta and we were both impressed by the taste and quality. we ended with a slice of "big ass chocolate cake" and it's literally half of a whole cake, they were not kidding! it was a little dry but still good. The Mill on the River is a great local restaurant. They've been around for many decades and are obviously doing something right. The location is very scenic with a view of a waterfall. There are many food options. The calamari fritti comes with hot peppers which is interesting. The classic sausage rigatoni, wienerschnitzel (with German potato salad, chilled cucumber salad, lingonberries), and baked stuffed shrimp entrees were all delicious. They stock a local blueberry cider that's great too. I had a Glenmorangie Nectar d'Or to drink at the end, which reminded me of some 18-year old Speysides that I had many years ago. Came on a Sunday and they only offered Sunday brunch for $25. It comes with a drink, entree and dessert. They start you off with a bread basket. The it contain one muffin and 4 small danish. The muffin was tasty but cold. I had the eggs Benedict with steak. It had two perfect cooked poached eggs, delicious home fries, and a small sandwich stake. Everything was good. 4 - First time and definitely not the last I had a really pleasant first visit. The staff was super friendly and even set me up outside when I asked small gesture, big points. Started with calamari, raw oysters, and Rockefeller oysters (first time having oysters btw), and wow fresh, flavorful, and now a new fave. The calamari especially? Crispy, buttery, and somehow still melt-in-your-mouth. The ahi tuna was excellent and paired perfectly with the Ferrari-Carano Fumé Blanc. Vibes were great, food was solid across the board. With a delightful setting and warm and comfortable interior a meal at The Mill on the River has a low key elegance which is welcoming to diners of all kinds. The menu is varied with something for everyone. We had the calamari fritti, French Onion soup, a Jager Schnitzel with red cabbage and whipped potatoes, which was delicious and so authentic, it took me back to my days living in Germany decades ago. The service matched the food. Our server Aaronz (I'm sure the spelling is wrong) was superb, friendly without being overly familiar and being attentive without hovering or interrupting so our needs were attended to but we were able to enjoy a peaceful dinner. The restaurant surprised us with a little sweet tray and a couple of glasses of champagne to celebrate our Anniversary, a nice touch. And if you like wine, there is an extensive collection artfully displayed in the dining area! If you want a good meal, there are a lot of choices in where to eat, but if you want a memorable DINING EXPERIENCE, then you must try the Mill on the River. read more

We went to the Mill on the River for our anniversary, looking for something a little out of the way due to the many college graduations in the area. The Mill is a delightfully relaxing experience with seating outside on the deck that overlooks the river and inside seating. We had our choice this night and chose outdoor seating. We started with the Garlic & Gorgonzola Bread which was the perfect size for two. We weren't ravenous and it was enough to satiate us while we enjoyed a drink and the view. I opted for a spicy margarita which was delicious. I wish there had been a salt rim, but that only would have enhanced it. My husband got one of the nightly specials, a slow cooked prime rib with baked potato and seasonal vegetables. It was positively perfect, easy to cut and melted in your mouth. I initially chose a different special, the Lazy Man's Lobster with risotto but it was out already, so I opted for the lobster pasta. The sauce was so thick and creamy, it was a real treat for someone like myself who doesn't usually partake in ricer sauces. There was plenty of lobster and the asparagus was al dente, which is my preference. We didn't get dessert, but I saw a few coming by and they looked delicious. Our waiter was super friendly and nice. When we declined dessert he offered another drink or water while we relaxed at the table before we left. Not rushing us out was a huge plus given I'm sure they were eager to turnover the table. One of the few restaurants that has a variety of seafood options in Hartford. The seafood martini is really good with the seaweed salad as the base and the lobster and crab was fresh but also small portions. The seafood boat was the special and was deluged in sauce and slightly overcooked so the salmon was quite dry. Should have gotten the sea bass which is much better. The escargot was warm with the right blend of garlic butter. The views are one of the main reasons for the restaurant's popularity. Plenty of parking in a private lot. read more

This is one of those places you wish you could like, or like far better, reminiscent of the old "Mill on the Floss" near North Adams or "Mistrals" in Manchester, both chef-owned, both equipped with classic flavors, atmosphere, and service. This is by far my favorite special occasion restaurant in the Windsor locks area. We celebrated our Grammy 80th birthday here and more recently my husband's birthday. The food is always impeccable, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu! I honestly love coming when we're in town. The view and the ambiance is very picturesque! The oysters were SO FRESH, like honestly straight outta the ocean fresh and the pasta dishes were extra dreamy! On last note the servers will go out of their way to make your night special like even killing a giant horsefly on our table special lol. My husband and I were excited for a rare date night at this riverside spot in Windsor, an hour from home, with a sitter lined up. I'd reserved weeks ahead, noting it was a special occasion and requesting a romantic window table. Instead, we were seated next to the noisy kitchen--despite an empty, perfect river-view table right there. I politely asked the hostess and server if we could move. The manager never appeared to address it, claiming the seating chart was "set for the night." The window table stayed vacant our entire meal. Unacceptable. Our server Jose was outstanding--attentive, warm, and clearly trying to make up for the poor start. The original server, Zack, also checked in often and seemed genuinely apologetic. The food itself was excellent. But between the hour-long drive each way and a $200 babysitter, the experience wasn't worth repeating. Great staff and food can't overcome rigid, tone-deaf management. Found out about this restaurant after volunteering with CT river to remove invasive species. Couldn't wait to go back for food after seeing how lovely the view was. THE FOOD -my friend ordered the French onion soup as an app. Classically served and she said it was good! -I tried the Chilean sea bass and it might be my new favorite fish dish. The fish itself was cooked perfectly, the veggies and sauce were to die for...just fantastic! I probably could've done without the clams (I haven't had clams many times but to me they seemed dried out?) but they weren't the main centerpiece of the dish. -for her entree she ordered the scallops over risotto. It looked amazing and she said it was very good!! THE DRINKS -all of the cocktails looked good but we both opted for margaritas. I can't order margs with sour mix as they are just so subpar from the real deal, so I had to try when I saw these were made with fresh lime juice. They didn't disappoint! I had the black and blue marg and it was perfect combo of marg taste with blackberry -upon seeing the menu I felt the prices were a little high but when you get the drink you can really tell it is made well. They aren't giving you a glass full of sugary juice and passing it off for $13+. It's a REAL cocktail. THE ATMOSPHERE -I mean come on, the name says it all! -We sat at a 2 top outdoors along the railing overlooking river and bridge. The outdoor area extends further back but we couldn't really see if from where we were. -the inside looked nice as well, though we didn't see more than was visible from our spot at the hostess station. -loved the covered bridge you walk through to get to the restaurant THE SERVICE -our server was very kind and attentive, gave us recommendations/ compliments on what we ordered. -they also had someone go around with warm bread, we each got one piece and did not see this go around again (I was fine with one piece, but wanted to point out for those curious) -the only thing is I wish our waters were refilled around the time our check came since we sat for a bit chatting and I would've enjoyed some more (there were open tables around us or else we wouldn't have kept the seats occupied) Overall, I truly can't stop talking about how delicious the food was. When you couple that with the excellent drinks, service, and atmosphere I think the Mill on the River might be one of my new favorite places to eat. This was my first time even though I use to live 5 minutes away. Came here for sunday brunch and it did not disappoint. Great water views from both outside and inside. Tons of seating options available. I noticed that there were several large parties coming in for events. Never felt over crowded or experienced a rush dining experience. There was plenty of parking available with 2 lots to choose from. The brunch option includes 2 alcoholic drinks( mimosa, champagne, etc), pastries and our entries. Our server was friendly and attentive. My friend and I had a great time catching up over brunch. We will definitely come back again. read more

If I could do zero stars I would. Began with a nasty hostess asking if we had reservations. For a Tuesday at 12;15??? Went for lunch and had 2 meals off the Prix Fixe menu, one child meal and one lunch menu meal. First it took the server over 10 minutes to greet us. She took our order. Soup and salad came out--no kids meal. Tables around us that got sat after us got their food before our soup and salad and in one case, their meals. Ordered medium rare filet that came out medium to medium well and had a Parmesan taste. Had to ask the another server to find our server so we could get the bill and our dessert to go. One and a half hours! With a toddler, for food that was tepid, terrible and overpriced. Will never go back! read more

I recently came here for a memorial/celebration of life lunch for my best friend's dad. It is a beautiful location that has a covered walkway over the river into the building which is cute and quaint. The service there is top notch and the food was spectacular. I had the tossed garden salad as an appetizer, the grilled North Atlantic salmon for the meal, and a warm Viennese apple strudel for dessert with a cup of cappuccino. My best friend picked a great place for everyone who loved her dad to come together, have a great meal, and talk about memories of him. Fantastic experience here on a Sunday brunch. Almost all the seating in there comes with a view and there is an option to eat outside too. I love their brunch menu and their offerings. Many of the brunch items come with a beverage, coffee and also some pastrys. The service was also excellent. We got our food quickly and with little to no issues. The steak and eggs is a great deal!
