I love Thomas! I started coming to him about 5 months ago and he is great! Other hair salons I've been to before cut your hair how THEY want. However, Thomas really listens to what YOU want and also he really takes his time to make sure your hair looks flawless. Also, this salon has reasonable prices. I came back to Thomas about a week ago to do a blonde balayage. I LOVE IT! I've been getting so many compliments from friends and coworkers. I am 110% sure I've found the good good. Thomas is a godsend and a really cool dude. If you want your hair to be perfect and have a good time, I really recommend you come here. I have been to various salons around the UDistrict and none have made me feel as welcome and confident as Chroma has! I called in to see if they had a walk in appointment and they were very flexible and happened to have a spot open. I zoomed on over and was in and out within an hour. I have medium length hair that has been damaged by Chlorine and never really know what to expect because I have coarse dry hair. Chroma uses Aveda products, which is great because I got a great scalp/shoulder massage with great smelling oils. Finding a home-base salon is always tricky when moving to a new city. I checked out this location based on the reviews and it did not disappoint. I've been to this location two times for cut and color, both with excellent results. Two specifics that exceeded my expectations: (1) The stylists record the exact formula they use for coloring you hair, which is a great reference point for future visits and makes handoffs between stylists easy. A good hair cut is as much about the stylist as it is the cut itself. Riane has been cutting my hair for about three years and is the best! She is friendly and always makes my hair look incredible. And the salon! Aveda has the whole olfactory thing nailed. Everything smells amazing! Riane starts you off with this super relaxing aromatherapy scalp and neck massage. Then when I get my hair washed, she gives a hand massage. The salon is also doing a hair treatment special right now until the end of April for 10$ (normally $30), and while it was soaking in, she put these warm towels over my head a couple of times. I very sadly had a bad experience at this salon. The place was nice and my stylist was friendly and fun BUT the haircut was terrible. I honestly don't think I've ever had a bad haircut until now. I have hair that is a shoulder length bob with heavy bangs. I basically just wanted him to take out some of the extra weight maybe with a few layers and trim my bangs back to eyebrow length, keeping them super straight across. I couldn't tell at the salon what a disaster my hair was because although I told the stylist that I wear it super straight he used a giant round brush and blow dryer and made it huge, poofy and wavy. My bangs seemed a little funny at the time but again I thought that was because of how he had styled them. They were splitting right down the middle...something no one with bangs ever wants! When I got home and used my flat-iron I started seeing what he had done to my hair and I was SO SHOCKED. Instead of some nice blended layers, I'm not kidding, I had one layer literally chopped into the middle of my head with random long hair hanging underneath. The layer went around the middle of my whole head in a straight line like a weird shelf. I then started attempting to fix my bangs with the flat iron and realized that what ever had done to them had created a middle split that has still not gone away, and they were as long as when I had entered the salon. This place is great, and Mandy is AWESOME! I was a new customer and had an appointment with her after work one day. Traffic was bad so I called to say I might be 10 minutes late; she was totally okay with it (I ended up being on time). I had a general vision for what changes I wanted to see with a new haircut, but I was also open to her suggestions. Her knowledge about hair textures, cuts, styling, and products was excellent and her suggestions worked wonderfully. She started by giving me an amazing head massage before the shampoo (which was another great head massage!). She used only a single styling product before round-brush drying my new cut. All-in-all, her service was top-notch and her friendly disposition was so appreciated. I'll definitely be back to see her. As a note, the other stylists in the salon were also really pleasant and helpful while I was there. The space was clean, not cluttered, and bright. The prices were reasonable, too. I've been seeing Brittney for over two years... and let me tell you, my hair has never looked better, been healthier, or turned more heads. Transitioning from razor pixie short hair was one of the most frustrating things I've done. She graciously taught me how to style, treat, care for, and live through the transition. Now I know it's only hair, but the level of trust I put in her is completely out of character for me (just ask my boyfriend). But every six weeks I tell her 'do whatever you want' and I come out looking like a Disney princess. She is a hair ninja. So much so, I haven't gone anywhere else for a haircut and it's been almost 2 years! Britany starts the experience with some deep breaths and fragrant oils to get you relaxed then offers suggestions as to what would look good with your head shape/hair type then works away on presenting the best you. Especially because half the time, I have no idea what looks best with my lack of fashion sense. She's there to consult and advise on fashion and style tips and tricks. Love this place. Took my fiance here to get his haircut and tehy did a great job. Friends of ours recommended it and we could not be happier with the service and the haircut. Beth cut his hair and did a great job. We always request someone who is good with mens hair because he likes a good haircut (who doesn't) and she was great. I got my brows done there by Cerice and she did an awesome job on them. I've had previous experiences where they took off way too much, but she did them perfectly and I will be going back again in a month or two. Chroma has a great selection of Aveda products and a really great atmosphere. There is lots of street parking around the area. Unfortunately I had a horrible experience at this salon. The salon itself is very nice looking and they use Aveda products so I was excited to try this place out. I came in for the first time and was told Michelle would be my hairdresser. When I met her she was very pleasant and nice but asked me over 5 times " ..so how do you want your hair cut again?" This scared me, she didn't listen very well. All I wanted was a trim. I have straight across bangs and only wanted them trimmed a small amount. She repeatedly asked me how I wanted my bangs cut, my final words were "just as long as you don't cut them above my brows, they'll be fine" she immediately cut them far above my brows. (See picture) I was in shock and actually burst into tears when I saw my bangs, I asked her multiple times why she did that and I got nothing back from her expect a very quiet "sorry"... She turned me away from the mirror and continued cutting my hair as I cried in the chair, never stopping to ask if I was okay or making a plan to see how we could fix the situation, the owner walked by repeatedly and looked at me and never asked me if I was ok. Not a word was said to me. When she finished my hair it was frizzy and unstyled and my bangs were far above my brows and uneven. No product was ever put into my hair. I actually asked if I could please see the flat iron and some hair oil and proceeded to style my own hair b/c I could not leave looking that way. I tried my hardest to be polite to Michelle and not make her feel any worse, but I was in complete shock at the entire situation and couldn't help but cry when I saw what she did to my bangs. The owner watched the whole thing and never stepped in. As I went to the counter to pay, the owner finally addressed the situation and did not ask for payment, he offered to have me return to fix my bangs w/ a more experienced stylist. I declined b/c I knew there was no way to add the inches that she took off back on, only time could do that. I'm sure this is a great salon and that this is an isolated incident but I would never recommend anyone to see Michelle at the Wallingford location and I would recommend to Chroma salon, that if in the future something like this happens again, take the time to put your client at ease and fix the situation before proceeding.. read more

Awesome hair salon! Super clean, great chill atmosphere and best of all, I love my haircut!!! =) Michelle was my stylist and she did an awesome job. She knew how to work with my hair (which does not work well with tons of layers even though so many stylists think that's the best idea) and pulled off a gorgeous short new haircut (went from long hair to just a little above my shoulder). She was super friendly and took care to make sure I was comfortable throughout. She made sure to remind me that there is complimentary bang trimming post-haircut so I won't have to worry about my bangs growing out and getting annoying.
