Chou's Kitchen saved my roommate Megan T. and I from dying of homesickness for a full summer in Arizona by providing DELICIOUS AND AUTHENTIC Chinese food. The dishes here are SO ON POINT and prices are super reasonable, even compared to Bay Area prices :) MUST GET DISHES: - Stir-Fry Eggplant & Minced Pork with Garlic Sauce: Guys. This dish is EVERYTHING. The Szechuan-style sauce is so flavorful and goes really well with rice. Like, too well with rice....because I end up eating too much and feeling regret mixed with immense satisfaction. - Dry Green Beans with Pork: The green beans have the PERFECT amount of bite to them - Spicy Cold Noodle With Cucumber: Mouth-numbing Ma-La goodness that's extra amazing on a hot day. Beware, though, if you're afraid of spicy oil, this is not the dish for you. I will say, though, that the various baos and dumplings they serve here are just okay. The xiao long baos are quite small, but still pack a good amount of soup in them. I would skip the sheng jian baos - the skin to filling ratio is way too high! I'll end by saying that my roommate and I ordered at least 4 dishes for the two of us each time we went to ensure that we had enough leftovers to last us well into the week. I had such high hopes... great comments on food quality and authenticity. I was totally bummed when we got our food on yelp. The Mongolian beef should have been Mongolian onions... where did the beef go? The spicy chicken was 2/3 chili pepper with a scattering of chicken and my eggplant and pork had little bits of something... not sure if it was meat. My BFF took me here for my birthday, I was craving some Chinese food. Can't say I was too disappointed. We started off with Wonton soup for the kiddos, and a vegetable fried rice, both I thought were okay, nothing to write home about. Then the pig ear came after, holy moly I wanted three plates to take home!! Perfect blend of warm spicy oil, cilantro and texture! It was my BFFs first time eating pigs ear and he absolutely loved it too. After finishing up that delightful appetizer came the soup dumplings, I thought they were pretty delicious, but I will say I have had better but still awesome! Next came the green onion pancakes(which they forgot to give us, until we brought it up), MEH I wouldn't order them again, pretty flavorless, would have preferred them to come first if anything, not enough onion and no dipping sauce. So that'll be a no go, next time. Service was pretty slow, but they did get rapidly busy around lunch time. But at Asian places you expect that anyways I suppose. Chou's Kitchen has the best Chinese food I've ever had. The restaurant is a hole in the wall but it packs huge flavor. Their menu is large so there's plenty to choose from. We had the scallion pancake, string beans with garlic/soy sauce, orange chicken, kung pao, and fried rice. Portion size was ver generous, you get white rice with any entree too. Everything was to die for and there was still plenty of leftovers for the next day. All of this was $45. Insane deal. Restaurant is clean and the service is great! read more

What a cute hole in the wall place! My husband has been obsessing over trying the dumplings with soup inside, so we decided to stop in one day to see what the hype was all about. We were kind of greeted, and the were directed to the booth for us to sit in. At first the waitresses were very rude and had minimal interaction with us, but I loved that the culture was everywhere in this restaurant; the decorations, the menus, etc. we ordered the dumplings, some fried rice, and some noodles, all to share.. But unfortunately we're only impressed with the dumplings. The fried rice was extremely dry and lacked seasoning, the noodles were good but also felt like something was missing. The dumplings were great, the cook on them and the soup inside was incredible, could see why they were so popular. I do think we'd try this place again if we're in the area, we could tell there were a bunch of regulars in here who loves the food. Would recommend if your out this way! read more

This is not your average Chinese takeout restaurant. Walk in and you will see the staff making dumplings that you won't regret trying. I'm no expert, but I believe the menu is Northeastern Chinese cuisine so it's a refreshing change of pace from your average Chinese food restaurant. I discovered Chou's Kitchen after searching for a place to get some good noodles. Chou's Kitchen was not too far from where I live so I decided to give it a try. I called the restaurant and made an order to-go and ordered a Szechuan Spicy Beef and a Chicken stir fried noodle. The Szechuan Spicy Beef came with spicy beef strips, nuts, and some red chili peppers. First impression, it was pretty flavourful and cooked just right, but as you eat it more and more, you can tell that there is an incredible amount of salt in the Beef. It is not to the point where it is unbearable, but you can definitely tell. However, the taste of the beef is good. The Beef also comes with a side of rice. The Chicken stir fried noodle tasted like a typical Americanized "Chinese" noodle dish, which I was actually okay with, but not wowed by. Overall, the prices are pretty good and the value is worth it. I would definitely give this place a try if you are looking for Chinese food. read more

This has become our favorite quickly. We'll usually order the pork or beef fried rice and potstickers. Occasionally we order different things that are recommended by Linda. My favorites from the recommendations would be the noodles (ask Linda, she knows which ones) and the steam pork dumplings. It can get busy during dinner time, but never is there a long wait. I enjoy the conversation with Linda when she has time. She is super friendly and she knows I looove soy sauce so she has my rice cooked with it and it's excellent! Whyyyyy are the reviews for this place so high? The food here is bland and greasy. The wonton soup was so blah, it was literally just wonton and bok choy. The broth tasted like water and the wontons are overpowering in ginger flavor. We also got sweet and sour pork which were very dry pounded out strips of pork that were too hard to even bite into. I've never had it like this before and was disappointed. The chowmein lacked flavor and was too greasy. Mongolian beef and orange chicken were also greasy and subpar. Chou's is a solid choice for northern Chinese food, with its heavy dependence on wheat and not rice, the staple cereal of the south, this restaurant turns out the most delicious dumplings. It seems something must have changed recently because the potstickers here have changed to the half-moon shape from the rectangular sheet of taquito-like dumplings they previously had. When Chou's is doing their best work, these mezzelune, stuffed with ginger-laced juicy pork and pan fried until their bottoms are crispy, dressed with a little soy, black rice vinegar, and chili oil, could be mistaken for xiaolongbao, so juicy are they. (Ready a supplied plastic Chinese spoon for the sauces and the dumpling.) Have never had a bad meal here yet, and the service is friendly and patient, although it is curiously the only Chinese restaurant I know that is super authentic yet not populated heavily with Chinese patrons. The only drawback is that when they are busy, their consistency and speed of delivery tends to slacken, so, order early. read more

Love the beef pie and appreciate the use of fresh noodles in the stir fried dish we ordered. Their popular juicy steam dumplings that are made in house was just ok for me. Didn't expect to have the vinegar in the inner broth. Word of caution: eat the whole dumpling in one bite. Otherwise you'll wear its juicy oil on your shirt that may not comes out with washing. The only reason why I gave 4 stars was because this lovely place is a bit overpriced for the serving sizes that you receive with an emphasis on the words "a bit." There are several items on the menu that are properly priced due to the labor it takes to make dumplings/potstickers/buns. This place is truly a gem though and I'll continue to go back. My son loves it too! It's small, intimate and cozy. I can't seem to try new things because I always go with my son (he's 8). A fairly small hole in the wall known for their dumplings, I wasn't too hungry when we went for lunch and decided to go with a hot & sour soup. Wow was it the most bland soup I had ever tasted. I tried to add pepper just for some semblance of flavor but it really was irreparable.. We did order a bunch of different dumplings to try and those were actually spectacular. I've heard there's quite a few restaurants with solid dumplings but Choi's definitely has some good ones! All of the ones we ordered were good and came out piping hot. Based on reviews, I ordered the pork dumplings and the chicken, mushroom and vegetables. the dumplings had a "heavy" dough covering and a bland filling. i was disappointed the soysauce bottle I used was actually vinegar! the cook who made the chicken dish had a very heavy hand with the salt, it was not very good! service was what I expected, minimal. i can't believe there were best of Chinese awards on the wall, must have been a different cooking crew. this restaurant seemed chaotic and needs some management attention read more

This is the original location - the one on Apache is their second. I used to frequent here when was in Tucson for college. The dishes here haven't changed much since then. We ordered the following: Beef pie - homemade pan fried flat buns. One serving comes with three - Best with chili oil mixed with soy sauce. Definitely recommend. I always end up getting this when I'm here. Mapo tofu - spicy tofu with ground pork. A bit on the salty side but goes very well with rice. Spicy Szechwan beef - fried beef stir fried with dry hot pepper. For the price, I wasn't too impressed. The taste was too salty. Spicy boiled fish (small) - small pot of hot chili oil with veggies and fish. Not as salty as ones mentioned above. Rice is provided for free with each dish ordered. Any extras will be charged. So I've been to the one in Tempe and I can already tell that this location is OG status. From the interior and how it's presented it's been around for a while. This is more traditional northern style Chinese food. So since I forgot to tell them no peanuts the 2/6 dishes ordered were the only things I could eat cause aint no way I'm gonna have an allergic reaction. The ma po tofu was really good, the sauce is oily and also numbed your mouth. It wasn't spicy, but flavorful. The pig intestine stir fry was really good too, the sauce made with it was Mongolian I think. I'll have to order without peanuts next time to avoid being unable to enjoy this read more

If someone tells you that you are the ginger vinegar to their xiaolongbao, marry them. Sooo... instead of listening to my fellow Yelpers, I took some blind advice given on Instagram and ended up getting an unsatisfying meal. We had ordered the Green Onion Pancake [103], The Pork Soup Dumplings/Xiaolongbaos (XLB) [111], the Pickled Vegetable with Pig Intestine Clay Pot [39], and the Sweet & Sour Fish [86]. I had completely forgot to order the Beef Pie, which is apparently juicier/saucier and more flavorful, much to my disappointment. Anyways, what I really wanted were the XLB and they were decent! Everything is handmade and the skins on these babies were tender and delicate. Sadly, it was so delicate that three out of seven of the soup dumplings had been punctured and spilled its soup before we could even pick them up to eat. The ones with that still had the soup were pretty good though. My companion's dish, the pickled veggies with intestines in a clay pot, was flavorful and the intestines were thankfully clean. Ain't nobody got time for particles-filled intestines! The onion pancake and the sweet & sour fish were lacking luster. The onion pancake lacked any flavor or seasoning and the fish dish came out soggy. It was such a bummer! The service can be pretty slow since it's a really popular joint that's much too small. There was a line out the door! Halfway through our meal, we were asked to relocated to a booth so we can give our table up to a single lonely diner which I understand but it was kind of a drag to walk across the restaurant balancing your purse, jacket, and plate. I never did get a water refill either. All in all, I'd come back for the XLB and to try their Beef Pies [get your mind outta the gutter!]. read more

My mom picked this place for her birthday lunch. We drove 50 mins (1 way). It was a little place stuck in a strip mall. We were greeted right away. The staff was super friendly. Before we ordered, the server brought waters and these yellow soups. I have never seen yellow soup before, so like a little kid, MOM - What is this??? She told me it was a corn congee-like soup. It was tasteless but then I found it you put sugar it in. Ah, I just I am a Northern Style Chinese food newbie. Since I have no idea, I left it up to my parents to order the food. Beef Pies - Excellent!!! Very tasty and yummy. Pork Potstickers - Freshly made and cooked. These are very good. But found out Northern style, you do not use soy sauce for dipping sauce. Vinegar is the thing. Green Onion Pancakes - It was fresh but the layers of dough were not there. OK. Fried Beef Bun - These are actually steamed. Doughy but good. Our go tos are the green beans with minced pork, stir fry noodles with pork, green onion pancakes, and of course the juicy pork dumplings.. best XLB in AZ. The tea is delicious and they love that the 3 year old drinks the hot tea. Food, service and price are all excellent for the portions and quality and a great northern Chinese dining experience you will not regret giving them a try :) read more
