Peruvian, Chinese, and Japanese fusion! What an experience. Chef Jose Andres and his talented team nailed it! Unique, bold flavors dancing in your mouth. The restaurant is beautiful too. It's unique, but the safe matches the fusion. We started with the dancing yucca and dorado siu mai. Who doesn't like potatoes said no one! Must start with yucca. Fancy siu mai! This was my first time have such an elevate dish. The dorado siu mai is traditionally made with quail eggs and gold flakes. Now that's fancy! There is an drink menu with classic drinks from Peru, Japanese whiskeys and beers, and your wines, etc. We tried a Peru classic called the Chicha Morada, which is made of purple corn, pineapple, and spices. It was non-alcoholic, but tasted like spice wine! It was so yummy! For entrees, we ordered the aero Puerto, which is fried rice, ERGs noodles, crisp sweet potato, veggies, and soy bean sprouts. Also, we ordered the Lomo Saltado, which is a beef filet, tomato, soy sauce, ahi Amarillo, peppers, potatoes, and onions. The flavors were on point. We were pretty full, but then someone walked by with a beautiful dessert. Bad decisions... we ordered it! Having enjoyed fine dining in Miraflores, Lima, I can attest that the flavors of China Chilcano capture the quintessential smack and zing that is Peruvian cuisine. We opted for the ceviche and the tradional lomo saltado to round out a late lunch after visiting the museums just a few blocks away. The venue was a great choice, but i'd be remiss to not say how odd it was that I was charged an additional $5 for a tiny bowl of rice that accompanied the lomo saltado. I didn't specifically ask for it, so it seemed to be part of the dish, but was charged separately. So, I made certain to eat every grain of rice as each one cost around a nickel. read more

If you're planning a date night, this place is perfect! The decoration and ambiance overall was very beautiful. My family, partner and I loved the decoration and the table we got. The food was OK though. My family and I ordered ceviche, a tallarín saltado de vegetales (plus we added chicken for protein), and an aji de gallina. The ceviche was presented in a really cool way, with the dish on top of a bigger dish full of ice so that it is served fresh and delicious, so that's a plus. The fish was very soft and enjoyable. However, the flavor was very bland and the lime juice barely felt like it was there. The tallarín saltado also felt like it had too much sodium. The saltiness was overwhelming, and the chicken felt as if it was nonexistent. The amount of vegetables in the dish however was surprising and delicious, so it was unfortunate that everything was really salty, making the bites at the bottom of the dish almost inedible to us. The only thing that was good was the aji de gallina. It was creamy and tasted pretty authentic to how it's made in certain parts of Peru. It came with a side of rice that I am unsure what seasoning was added to it, but the taste was really strong and I don't think it really complimented the actual plate. The server we got was really kind overall, and kept checking in on us despite the restaurant being busy. We really appreciate that the staff were able to find a table for us in such a short amount of time despite how many families were already seated, but I don't think I would come back again considering the prices are a bit high for small portions and not very enjoyable food. read more

Among the many resolutions I made at the beginning of 2023, was to clear out the backlog of restaurants that I have bookmarked "To Try". I was in the Gallery Place neighborhood recently and after walking around trying to decide between a few places, my dining companion and I opted for China Chilcano; bonus since I've been meaning to try this place out for years. Opened in January 2015, China Chilcano specializes in the Chifa cuisine which is native to Peru, but is now also extremely popular throughout South America. Starting in the late 19th and early 20th Century, Chinese immigrants from the Guangdong province settled in coastal cities of Peru, and concentrating in the capital city of Lima. These immigrants infused the local Peruvian cuisine with previously undiscovered flavors such as soy sauce, ginger, five spice powder until the Chinatown (aka Barrio Chino) around Capon Street near historic downtown Lima became a culinary melting pot. Our server, Lilliana, did a wonderful job of explaining Chifa cuisine and providing context for the meal to come; since going into China Chilcano I initially thought this was just another generic "Asian Fusion" spot. I started off the meal with their namesake beverage, the Chilcano. Caravedo pisco, lime, Amargo Chuncho bitters, Fever-Tree ginger ale were all combined to deliver a refreshing drink with just the right amount of acidity and tartness to balance out the overall sweetness. Dancing Yucca was a much larger appetizer than I expected. Nicely fried yucca logs were crispy without being overly oily and presented with airy bonito flakes with kewpie mayo and a Japanese style dipping sauce. The Pulpo al Olivo Rosita Yimura ceviche was really tasty! Octopus was sliced paper thin, and arranged in a circular pattern and then drizzled with botija olive-mayo and garnished with slices of avocado. I always appreciate a dish which is not overly seasoned and the natural flavors of the ingredients are allowed to dominate. And with any quality ceviche, the seafood protein should be fresh and not rubbery. For the main we tried the Donburi Ji Song, which in my estimation, was their Chifa interpretation of the Chinese staple, Kung Pao chicken. Diced chicken, was tossed with a soy based sauce and mixed with red onion, avocado, pickled nabo, peanuts and placed atop steamed white rice. These non-traditional ingredients all (unexpectedly) worked well together. The chicken had a bit of wok fired heat, the sauce wasn't too sweet, and the nabo turnip and red onions provided a nice textural crunch; Interestingly the avocados also gave the dish a nice creaminess. I've dined at a few Jose Andres spots and TBH, I've had some uneven dining experiences. That being said, China Chilcano is an extremely popular destination and for good reason. It's fun, the service is attentive and friendly, and the culinary philosophy pays homage to its Peruvian heritage while instilling a bit of modern whimsy. Four very well deserved stars. read more

Beautiful and trendy restaurant with a very cool ambiance! I ordered the sakura sour, dancing yucca, siu mai dorado, and lomo Saltado. Everything was delicious with a beautiful presentation. My drink tasted great. Not too sweet, great taste and very cute. The dancing yucca was a dense appetizer so keep that in mind with the other dishes you order and/or the amount of people you share it with. China Chilcano is super cute. My friend and I went for dinner where we shared the shishito peppers which were absolutely amazing (don't forget to put the lime on the peppers). I ordered the aeropuerto and my friend had tallarín zhen fe. The aeropuerto was absolutely delicious and would order it again. I tried a bite of the tallarín zhen fe and it was delicious, but the rice flour noodles were a bit too chewy for me while my friend loved it. If all you come here for is the drinks, I would recommend at least ordering the shishito peppers. read more

I did enjoy the ji song chifero, but right after ordering it, sounded like it's just chicken stir fried with soy sauce. I did enjoy the lettuce cups, made it seem like a healthier option (albeit salty). Still, I enjoyed it the most given the amount of food. We also got the kam lu wantan, which had an amazing sauce and decent portion size. The sui mai pollo were good but only had four pieces and didn't seem like it was worth it. Service was busy, but the bartenders were friendly. They did mess up order because we never got the yucca fries and ordered the sanguche de pescado, but we were ravenous and didn't care too much. read more

Overall, 3.5/5 but will bump it up to a 4/5 since we did like a couple of our options. And the pricing isn't awful for DC. The service was great and the restaurant has nice vibes and decorations, but the half of the food we ordered fell short. The plates here are pretty small, so you'll definitely need to order more than just a plate. I'd recommend family styling if possible so you can try as much food as you can. I was able to finally try out China Chilcano with two friends this past Sunday evening after hearing so many raving reviews. I'd recommend making a reservation beforehand if possible just so you don't have to risk waiting for a table upon arrival. My friends and I weren't too hungry so we ordered two smaller plates and two entrees. DANCING YUCCA - 12 There were 12 perfectly crispy yucca fries that sat on top of each other in the shape of a pyramid, topped with sauce and bonito flakes similar to takoyaki. The yucca were fresh and flavorful, going well with the toppings. This fusion dish was a hit - my friends and I really enjoyed the yucca and would recommend it! TRADICIONAL LIU MAI (7 PC) - 14 I was excited about this and everything else I got. However, I would forget how the siu mai would taste after eating other foods because everything else was just more flavorful and made a bigger impact in my memory. In general, I felt like the pork siu mai were pretty mediocre - the texture was good, but nothing stood out taste wise. Maybe try a different siu mai next time? The KAM LU WANTÁN seemed incredibly popular if you're in the mood for fried foods. AJÍ DE GALLINA - 19 Yooooo this one slapped!! The chicken stew was so homey and rich (but not in the overwhelming kind of way). The chicken was so tender and soft. I don't know how they made the sauce/gravy but it was so flavorful! It went well with the lightly flavored rice that we got on the side. The cheese, pecans, eggs and other toppings I'm forgetting definitely enhanced the dish - lots of good ingredients in one dish. Highly recommend! LOMO SALTADO - 23 Unfortunately, this one also fell short for us. There were six very large chunks of beef filet. I wish we were given a knife to cut up the pieces since some of them were really chewy. There was a piece I just stuffed in my mouth because I couldn't split it up and ended up having to discard some of it because I couldn't chew it up. The flavor of the beef was good, but the overall dish was quite bland and uninspiring for lomo saltado. I'm used to a really flavorful and umami filled lomo saltado. The fries were boring and tasteless, and the sauce was thin and sat at the bottom. It was hard to mix everything up together, too. I probably wouldn't recommend the LOMO SALTADO here, to be honest. Some hits and some misses - I'm glad I finally got to try China Chilcano though. I'll consider coming back for a future Restaurant Week since I hear the most hype for this restaurant every time RW rolls around. read more

This was a good stop for something a little different. I've not come across many Peruvian, Asian fusion restaurants, so I'm glad I tried it. The food was good. I made the mistake of adding pork belly to my dish. I know that pork belly tends to be fatty, but it was more fat than anything else. Ambiance is nice and service is better than Jaleo. In my opinion, out of the 4 restaurants, Minibar is way better than any restaurants out there (all restaurants, not just these four), The Bazaar is in the second place, Jaleo is in the third place, China Chicano is the last. read more

What fantastic food! After a long day walking around DC we stumbled upon this restaurant on a Saturday afternoon. Our server greeted us right away. We ordered a couple appetizers, the Dancing Yucca and the Ji Song Chifero, and then the classic ceviche. Everything was so delicious and unique. The yucca dish was fried yucca covered in Asian sauces and bonito flakes (I believe dried tuna). Surprising and delicious! The second appetizer was chicken in an Asian sauce with lettuce wraps and was also delicious. The ceviche was very fresh and citrusy. Nestled in a hub of popular high-end restaurants at the edge of D.C.'s Chinatown and Penn Quarter, China Chilcano is a José Andrés restaurant serving up an intriguingly unique fusion of Peruvian, Chinese, and Japanese flavors in an eclectically modern and colorful space. The interior of the restaurant is bright and airy, adorned with lovely red and gold accent pieces, industrial-chic lighting, vibrant murals, and sleek wooden beams. My party of 5 made a reservation about a week in advance for a Tuesday night at 6pm, and upon entering the restaurant, it was mostly full, so I would suggest making a reservation on Open Table. We arrived about 15 minutes early, but were still immediately seated at a large round table complete with a lazy susan rotary. Our server was very friendly and efficient, and walked us through the extensive menu comprising many different types of cuisine. She recommended ordering around 2-3 dishes per person, as most are small plates meant for sharing. Tuesdays are Dim Sum night, where most orders of dim sum come in sets of four pieces, ranging from $5-8 - a great price for a Michelin Bib Gourmand-designated restaurant! Additionally, the restaurant has Happy Hour specials every weeknight from 4-6pm, where you can get a variety of small plates for under $10. We startied with their Dancing Yucca ($12) and their Salmon Tiradito ($18). The Dancing Yucca is a fun starter of crispy, thick-cut yucca fries topped with an addictive aji amarillo mayo (a lovely combination of richness, acidity, and spice), a sweet kabayaki sauce, and bonito flakes that lend an amazing visual element to the dish, giving the illusion that the flakes really are "dancing." In addition to the aspect of fun, the bonito flakes also add that signature umami flavor provided by the intense taste of the smoked fish. The Salmon Tiradito is absolutely beautiful: six thin slices of succulent, fatty salmon sashimi lay on a bed of tart and tangy white soy ponzu, with fresh watermelon radish and sweet drop peppers adding pops of brightness to the dish, as well as an addictive crunch. To top it all off, the trout roe sprinkled over the salmon bursts in the mouth with a delightful brininess. Next, we ordered two orders each of the Siu Mai Tradicional ($6 for 4 pieces), Siu Mai Dorado ($8 for 4 pieces), and Szechuan Chili Wontons ($5 for 4 pieces). While small, all of these dim sum dishes packed a plethora of flavor: the Siu Mai Tradicional was stuffed with a juicy mixture of pork, shrimp, jicama, and shiitake mushroom, and complemented by crunchy diced peanuts and a "black vinegar chicha de jora dipping sauce." The Siu Mai Dorado had the same filling, but was topped with runny quail egg and a gold leaf, making this dish decadent in both taste and appearance, respectively. The Szechuan Chili Wontons were a sleeper hit of the night: the wontons were similarly succulent with a mix of shrimp and pork, but served with an addictive chili oil sauce and fermented black beans, elevating a seemingly simple wonton into a craveworthy dish. We then ordered the Concolón ($25), a crispy tableside fried rice pot with pork belly, egg, lap chong sausage, shiitake mushroom, bok choy, and rocoto, topped with what seemed to be crunchy pork rinds. This dish had a wonderful mixture of textures and flavors, with the rich pork belly and egg yolk creating a luscious, fatty coating for the rice. However, I did wish that the rice at the bottom became a bit crispier, and that they were more generous with the pork belly. Lastly, for our large plates, we ordered the Langosta a lo Macho ($70) and the Pollo a la Brasa ($44). The Langosta is a whole Maine lobster steamed then fried with potato starch, spicy tomato, and panca/"macho sauce", pickled pearl onion, and garlic rice. While this was a small portion of lobster, it was fried perfectly, with a lovely crispy exterior revealing moist, juicy chunks of lobster inside. The spicy "macho sauce" was rich and almost curry-like, pairing nicely with the lobster as well as the rice (which just seemed like garlic rice, not regular rice). This was indulgent and rich, but I wouldn't pay $70 again for it. The Pollo s a Peruvian-style roasted organic whole chicken - it's not the best chicken I've ever had, but it's well-cooked (even the white meat), and the fun really lies with the variety of sauces: it's served with aji de polleria sauce (almost like a Peruvian pesto), shishito and huacatay sauce, and chicken jus. Overall, we loved our meal at China Chilcano - with the Dim Sum Tuesday menu and Happy Hour specials, it's more affordable than most fine-dining options in the city, and we also used the inKind app for a discount (which is a great app that aims to make restaurants more accessible for a larger population). Service was fast and friendly, the food was unique and delicious (not just fusion for the sake of fusion - see my review for Kaliwa), and the restaurant itself is stunning: a definite yes from me! read more

Another mediocre Jose Andres restaurant in DC. We got the dancing yucca, Szechuan Brussels sprouts, and lomo saltado. The dancing yucca were priced at a hefty $12 and were nothing to write home about - you could get similar yucca fries from any of the various local Peruvian chicken joints for under $5. They came doused in a brown sauce and a mayo sauce - neither of which was that good. I would have rather had the green sauce that comes with Peruvian chicken. The Szechuan Brussels sprouts were anything but authentic. There was 0 spice to the dish whatsoever, despite the waiters warning us about how spicy the red peppers in the dish were. The Szechuan glaze was kind of bland and just sweet, while the Brussels sprouts were barely fried and not crispy at all. The sprouts also had a bitter taste to them from the charring, but (again) there was no crispy textural component. The only thing I would get again is the lomo saltado. The dish had several hefty chunks of beef with a variety of sautéed vegetables, with some fat fries in soy sauce. They only let you order the beef medium rare or well done - I ordered medium rare, but my meat came out more like medium well. The fries were plentiful but got soggy because they just sat in a bowl of soy sauce. Overall though, the taste of the dish was pretty good I support Jose Andres humanitarian efforts, but his restaurants are reflective of the overall DC food scene - overhyped and overpriced read more

The food here is absolutely delicious. We started with the yuca fries takoyaki style and it was a great balance of sweet, salty, and smooth yuca. I wanted to save room for all the food we ordered but we couldn't resist and just finished everything. We also had the shumai with peanuts and it was typical of what I expect from shumai. We ordered the char sui platter and it was delicious. The pork itself was tangy and sweet with a good amount of char. Putting it in the pillowy steamed bun with all the sauces and pickled onion was perfectly balanced when you take a bite. We also had the lomo saltado which was also very good. Sauce had plenty of umami flavors and the bread was nice and crunchy. My only wish was that the meat was a little more tender as it was a bit difficult to eat. We had a lovely waitress who was very attentive and made sure to let us know of any dishes that were unavailable. The happy hour food and drinks were well priced and really tasty. I loved the pisco sour as well as the Chicano and I added pineapple pure for a nice flavor. I had an extremely brief, but questionable service experience here. My friends and I came in and were seated around 5:40pm on a Wednesday. We asked if they had happy hour, or "pisco hour," as they refer to it. The server told us she had to ask about that. That's the first weird thing. Obviously, as a server, you would already know if happy hour was happening or not. After about 5min we were given the pisco hour menu. Pisco hour ends at 6pm. We thought it was shady that they didn't want to tell us about it in the first place just because it was 5:40pm. The second unpleasant part is that after a round of pisco sours, we asked for the check to leave for our dinner plans. We just came for a quick round of drinks. I left a cash tip of $4 on our subtotal of $21. As soon as we stood up to leave, the women servers cleaned up our table and started talking and laughing with each other. I think they assumed we couldn't speak spanish. We stopped in for a quick bite before an event and had a great experience. It was a busy Saturday night but we were able to snag seats at the ceviche bar. Atmosphere: busy, vibrant Service: very good and very attentive. We let her know is we were headed to another event and Sri Ms and food came out promptly. 10/10 Food: we split the Aeropuerto. It was a fried rice dish with tons of veggies, eggs and crispy potatoes on top. Dining at China Chilcano was such a treat! It was super packed on a Tuesday night. I love the lighting and decor, which makes it feel like a party or nice occasion (but no pressure to dress up, I was very casual). My friend and I ordered the Ceviche Nikkei (tuna) and Concolón - a cold and hot dish! The ceviche was a smaller dish than I expected given the price (~8 tuna pieces). But it was very good, tasted very fresh. It was served in a bowl that rested on top of a bowl of ice to keep the temperature! The Concolón was a fun dish - the server pointed out all the ingredients before pouring some sauce and mixing it, then served. This dish was served with a side sauce that was VERY spicy. I didn't end up using much of it but if you want a spicy kick, it's there! The pork belly was cooked deliciously!! I have no complaints. All very good ingredients that really highlight the fusion of the Chinese influence in Peruvian cuisine. For dessert we ordered the Suspiro Limeña. It was a sweetened condensed milk custard. It was such a good custard and just sweet enough that it cut the sour of the iced passion fruit. A great way to end the meal! read more

I was super excited for this place, but it was disappointing.... The food was just okay, nothing spectacular. The dim sum was good but not out of this world. The appetizers were also just okay. Our service from our waiter was mediocre. I don't know if our server thought we wouldn't tip well because we looked younger than the rest of the crowd. We saw him mention the specials to the other table and do small talk. We didn't get o any of that. He came to our table maybe 3 times in the 1.5 hours we were there. The wait staff and people bringing out food were super nice. The ambiance is nice though. I wouldn't come here again though, for the price it's definitely not worth it. Try somewhere else read more

Stopped by China Chilcano after visiting the holiday market with a friend. Place was booked but we were able to sit at the ceviche bar. There were tons of staff there yet my friend and I barely got any service. I had to finish my meal without getting a refill on water and no one checked in to see if we needed anything or how the food was. Food wise, the aeropuerto and lomo saltado were both ok. The aeropuerto was basically a small fried rice dish with a sprinkle of crunchy noodles on to. Taste was ok but I felt like it needed a kick and wasn't fragrant. The lomo saltado was salty. Beef was cooked well but not as tender as I'd hope. Flavor wise, it reminded me more of an Asian dish than Peruvian. The rice that came with it was also tiny. Overall, not worth all the hype. Food came out fast but flavor and service could be improved. read more

That's what you expect. Her conversation was lively and engaging. Requested hot water and lime, didn't ask for the mint. CJ apologized, stating I should have been given the mint. Then, I received a bowl of mint! It's the little details that makes me a return customer. Hi Ms. C. WELCOME BACK! -------------- 11 29.23: I will not be back. I requested hot water and lemon with mint, please. Waitress responded that they did not have mint. Ordered a chocolate and banana ice cream dessert, with a sprig of MINT! When I asked the waitress, she shrugged her shoulders. Ridiculous. Then, Manager attempts to explain that the waitress wouldn't know. Well, does she know how to ask!
