Another excellent restaurant by Jose Andres - this time a fusion of Peruvian and Chinese cuisine. It's located near Capital One Arena in Chinatown DC so great place to eat before a concert. There's a lot of small plates to order so you can sample different dishes. There are tasting menus, dim sum and Peruvian dishes. Fillings in the dumplings were excellent. As went here with two people, we didn't get to sample a lot. Thought the food was good so will definitely come here again. Service was good despite how crowded it got.
Pretty disappointing. And not that great of Peruvian-Chinese-Japanese fusion restaurant. Need to pay more attention to the reviews that say the following: small servings (siu mai were half the size than regular anywhere else), ceviche also super small serving - good flavor but not much and not served with anything to eat it with (like chips), Tam tam noodles were overcooked and mushy, brussel sprouts were delicious (!), lomo saltado was meh (undercooked pieces of onion, nice chunks of beef but kind of chewy, super salty sauce but was good soaked up by the fries). Kind of fun decor - expected more from this Jose Andres restaurant because we really enjoyed the sister restaurant, Oyamel nearby (try that place instead!)
This restaurant is by Chinatown, not far from Capital One Arena. Jose Andres has several restaurants in the District. We wanted to see how "round one" would taste before ordering other items. After serving our dish & pouring water, we didn't see the server until we were finished. He didn't ask how we were doing or if we needed anything. The atmosphere is pleasant and upbeat. There is a weekday and weekend menu. Brunch is popular on the weekend. The menu is a bit pricey. We had a nice table near the window. If you want more privacy, sit at either end of the restaurant. It gets busy and crowded in the middle. Hubby ordered an amazing pasta dish. It was flavorful and nicely plated. My quinoa was wonderful. I enjoy using lettuce to wrap items. If our server had stopped by, I would have asked for more lettuce. The desert was wonderful. The texture, flavors and plating were great. It is obvious that each dish is carefully checked before leaving the kitchen. The manager eventually stopped by. When he learned we had been ignored, he offered desert. We thought he was offering coffee as part of the apology. He was not. Our server started taking interest in us after desert, when the manager had spoken to him and we didn't need him anymore. If you don't mind spending money on a creative meal, you will find yummy dishes here. We stopped by a fast food restaurant on the way home since we didn't have that much at the restaurant.
Fun little concept of Chinese and Peruvian fusion food as the name suggests. I was eating by myself so I tried passionate fruit juice and the lomo saltado, unfortunately not the Chinese fusion food. The drink and food I'd say is pretty standard. The Lomo Saltado dish, however, I'd say that it's just a bit too salty, and the beef steak is slightly overdone, but only slightly. So I'd still give it a 4/5. Overall, I thought it's a beautiful space and nice dining experience and I'd still recommend it to others, just not on the top of my list.
I came on Tuesday which I realized is Dim Sum Tuesday where they have discounted items from their dim sum menu! I'll have to try that next time, but this time I got the Ceviche Nikkei, Lucky 12 (4pcs of 3 different types of siu mai), and the Aji de Gallina. My favorite was the ceviche nikkei; it was so refreshing and the tuna was the perfect texture! Out of the three types of siu mai, the siu mai tradicional was my favorite. The pollo siu mai has like a salsa in it that was very unique but not my favorite. The Aji de Gallina was very hearty and comforting. The chicken pieces themselves were fine but the stew was so delicious. The real star of the show was the dessert: ponderaciones de kiwicha! The banana ice cream it comes with was phenomenal, it pairs so well with the cocoa powder! I would come back just for dessert! The ambiance is really nice! Decor is super cute, the light fixtures are really cool! Service was great!
This is my first time to Washington DC but not my first time experiencing Peruvian cuisine. This restaurant experience is a must-not-miss-ever, if you can help it, kind of food and drink experience. The ambience is fun and feels upscale without being stuffy. The staff are friendly and better yet are excellent guides of the unique Peruvian menu that takes you on a flavor joy ride. The attentiveness and warmth of all the members of this team led by Josh was phenomenal! The food is just too good for me to describe. You truly have to just go and experience it
Honestly, it's average food at above average prices. The ambiance is what you're paying for here, because the space is pretty cool. I was surprised at how busy it was, despite the average tasting food. It is loud and difficult to have conversations, so that is worth considering. I got to sample quite a few dishes, and aside from Siu Mai, I don't think there's a single dish I would order again. I love Peruvian food and Chinese food, but this didn't work for me. The prices are not absurd by any means, but for the same money there's better places. Service was also really slow. Food came out decently fast, but it took forever to pay.
I had no idea there was another José Andres spot in a two block radius - and it was worth the visit! Our server was attentive and made a great recommendation on the cauliflower when we decided to get another dish. We especially loved the ceviche Nikkei - great flavor and texture. The Hong Kong rich noodle dish was so so compared to the rest. And the dessert - yum! Tasted like caramel with passion fruit ice on top. The decor / ambiance is both modern and also low key - they have metal chairs, and funky lights. It doesn't have the higher end feel -- if that's what you want, try Zaytinya.
We enjoyed our weekend brunch. We order 2 ceviches to share, a tuna and octopus. All of us loved the tuna. One didnt care for the octopus. For entrees, we ordered the cheeseburger from the brunch menu which was fantastic. We didnt care for the plantain sides though. We also shared the Concolon fried rice and added shrimp, which had really interesting spices. I would come here again. Cocktails were kind of a miss though. Waitress wasnt very familiar with the cocktail menu.
We're fans of Chef José Andrés whole make the world a better place vibe and have made it our mission to try all of his DC restaurants whenever we're in town. This time up it was China Chilcano...Pervian/Asian/Spanish fusion food with lots of vegetarian options and unique things to try. We (my wife, son and I) all got variations of the tasting menu and each made different choices from the options available...and we each had different experiences. I had a bit of a "the grass is greener" experience as I tried bits of what my son had ordered and generally preferred what he got in terms of taste and texture. Universally, the food was gorgeous and presented in a photo-ready manner one would expect from this kind of establishment. The desserts were also unique and worth trying. (Often desserts at a nicer place can be standard variations of the same thing you can get anywhere...what's on the menu here is worth sticking around for as you can't get it anywhere else. I also had a Pisco Sour Cocktail...I'm a fan of trying the things that are unique to where I am...in this case, the cocktail looked and tasted great, but it had more of a standard sour vibe than anything else. If the Peruvian pisco liquor had any unique taste, I wasn't able to perceive it in this cocktail. Service was perfect.
Not one of Jose Andre's best restaurants i just admit. It's probably at the same level as Jaleo. The ceviche and Hamachi was ok nothing special. My clients enjoyed their lomo saltado and tallarines saltado. My shrimp saltado was ok but a little bland. Servers were friendly and the ambiance is nice inside with fun decor throughout the restaurant which is pretty big. I'll try other places next time I'm in the nation's capital. Would recommend you do the same.
Overall experience was great! I recommend getting a reservation if you're eating here between 6-8pm. Although you can make it the day of! It's family style here and my two favorite dishes were the dancing yucca and hamachi ceviche! It really brought out the two Hispanic and Asian cultures to me. I wasn't the biggest fan of the tallarin zhen fe (my husband really enjoyed it) because I thought the noodles were undercooked. The Brussels sprouts and dumplings were pretty good! Definitely coming back here to try more dishes :)
Came here before a show at Warner Theater - a little far from the venue but not a bad walk! We started with the brussel sprouts and yucca fries - both were incredible. A bonus was their ability to accommodate for gluten allergies! For my main I got the Tam Tam with a fried egg - it was so flavorful and a perfect portion! Highly recommend for a date night or dinner with friends!
Interesting spot! The food was generally very good - dancing yucca and lomo saltado were standouts. The hamachi ceviche was just meh, fish quality and flavors weren't quite there. Drink menu is a strange mix of Peruvian and Japanese. Most of the cocktails are made with pisco or sake, so you're limited on cocktail options if you aren't a fan of either. Overall interesting concept. The space is big, open, and on the casual side. Service was good. read more

I've been curious about this restaurant for a bit now because of the fusion and Jose Andres's places usually are always a good choice! I decided to check it out since I was in the area, but was almost deterred due to some of the reviews I'd read. The menu can be confusing to understand but the bar staff was really helpful with explaining it and recommending dishes!! I'm glad I went because I loved the food! Tam Tam: 5/5 much better than I thought it would be. There are a lot of peanuts in it which influences the taste and a bit of a kick but nothing too bad at all Kam Lu Wantán: 5/5 These were so good! After six years and countless visits, China Chilcano remains our favorite restaurant in Penn Quarter, and probably our favorite among the Jose Andres restaurant empire. There are so many reasons, but chief among them is that Peruvian food offers such a wonderful and accessible variety of flavors and textures, from ceviches to dumplings to chaufas, causas, cocktails, and great seafood, meat, or vegetarian options. I've spent time in Peru and China Chilcano is the real deal -- on par with the great restaurants of Miraflores. When you factor in that it's reasonably priced (for the area), it's five stars for me. PS Don't skip dessert here. They're all really good, and beautiful. read more
Was excited to try one of Jose Andreas restaurants while I was here and wanted to try this one since it was an interesting Peruvian and Asian mix. I started off with a Maracuya (passion fruit) cocktail and it was really good - Perfectly sweet and tarte! The appetizers came and the Dancing Yucca was delicious! Perfectly fried on the outside, and soft and fluffy on the inside. I loved the ahi amarillo mayo with the bonito flakes with gave it so much flavor. Unfortunately, the pork sui mai was just okay. It was really small and the dough was thick. The pork didn't really stand out and was really dense. My main dish was Lomo Saltado which came with beef filet, tomato, soy sauce, aji amarillo pepper, tomato and onions. The sauce was simple but really really flavorful and the meat was cooked pretty well at medium rare. My knife cut through it pretty well and there was a good chew to the meat. The peppers and onions were crunchy and flavorful which provided some good texture to the dish. Overall pretty solid! read more

I have to start by saying I sat in an area where the yellow lighting was just awful... It was hard to see clearly and it was messing with my head. Other than that, the food was nice. Kind of overpriced for the quantity in my opinion - definitely for the occasional outing (plus it's DC). Service was okay. Seating is a bit tight in general, but there were also a lot of people. read more

WOW. Let's all get transported to Cusco, Peru! As a fellow traveler, this place blends all sorts of cuisine, Chinese, Peruvian, for starters. We went with a group of 10 and did family style for dishes and sat on small chairs around a table together. The vibe was fantastic! Service was attentive and caring. We tried almost the entire menu as a group and the pastas were fantastic. The dim sum was also wonderful. Some stand outs: the lamb (salto something), the aeropuerto noodle, tan tam noodle. Absolutely loved eating here during happy hour. We tried so many fun dumplings and appetizers. The server was really kind and helped us pick out the right dumplings for our taste. The inside is decorated beautifully. We had just visited Peru recently, and I loved the Nazca line art inside as well. read more
Dropped in without a reservation and we were able to get a table right away on a Friday night. Ambiance: beautiful decor, unique seating options, and large patio Food/drinks: incredible! We've been to one other Jose Andres restaurant and it was great so this bib gourmand was a gem to come across on our DC trip. The fusion cuisine is really unique and combines flavors and ingredients from Peru, China and Japan. We got the char siu platter, ceviche Nikkei and papas a la Huancaina. Everything was created with a lot of thought and care and it all tasted amazing. We also tried one of their signature cocktails and it was delicious - strong but not overpowering. Service: moved very quickly and the staff were very helpful in offering suggestions Absolutely worth the price - this is pretty much fine dining for a much more affordable price. read more

Tried China Chicano for the first time recently - The service was great! Although we walked in at a crowded time, they were able to seat us outside within minutes and it happened to be a great day for outdoor dining. The ambiance was also very nice. The restaurant is beautifully decorated inside and there seemed to be several unique seating options to choose from for groups/larger parties. The drinks were good but I think a bit small for the prices. But it's downtown DC, so what can you expect. The food was a little underwhelming for me. We ordered the dancing yuca and the concolon. The dancing yuca was good but the concolon was lacking in flavor. They do bring it out tableside to assemble the dish - but I wish the sauces that it was made with had more flavor, or that they gave you extra sauce. The pork belly in the dish could also have been more caramelized. It was a filling meal but definitely not what I would expect from a Jose Andres restaurant. read more

When we first sat down our waitress brought 2 glasses of champagne because we said we were celebrating something which we thought was very nice. Their pisco sours are what they're known for but I got the Bullet Train cocktail and it was a tad spicy which worked perfectly. My favorite dish was the pork and shrimp crispy wantans. The ceviche nikkei was also delicious, and the tuna tasted really fresh. The lettuce cups were also very good but we wish they had a little more chicken on them. Sadly the brussel sprouts had great flavor but were incredibly salty, way too salty to actually enjoy sadly. The desserts were delicious, especially the banana ice cream that came with our ponderaciones dish. I'm not sure if we'd be back because we tried everything we wanted to but I would definitely recommend coming here at least once! read more
We had such a good time here! Going in I wasn't expecting much because, based on the menu, there wasn't all that much for me (lacto-ovo vegetarian). But hubby really wanted to go and I decided that, since we love Jose Andres, I really should give it a try. If you are vegetarian, don't skip on this one thinking there isn't anything for us -- give it a try! Highlights include the crispy outside/fluffy inside yucca, the squash dumplings, and the Szechuan brussel sprouts. Hubby is a carnivore and loved his shrimp and chicken but there's plenty of other reviews for that -- I'm here to tell you that if you are vegetarian you can have a unique and delish meal here. read more

This was my first José Andrés restaurant I went to, and I have to say it was a cool concept, although I didn't love all the dishes we had. The restaurant is very open and decorated well. We ordered: Shishito Peppers - 5/5. Seasoned so well and nicely grilled. Causa California - 3/5. Honestly tasted like nothing. Reminded me of baby food when it came to consistency. Papas a la Huancaína - 2/5. Not my favorite -- sauce was a little bland. Tam Tam - 5/5. My favorite dish. This was so good and the noodles were cooked perfectly! read more
One of my foodie friends recommended this spot, so we stopped by for lunch. We were seated promptly and given menus. We decided to try the chef's tasting menu, but after asking for that, they told us that they gave us the wrong menu LOL. To start, hubby got a glass of beer and I opted for a passionfruit water. My drink was refreshing! Then we shared the ceviche clasico, siu mai, wontons, and crispy bao buns. I liked the fusion of flavors, but menu was limited during lunch. While I love the idea of combining Peruvian, Chinese, and Japanese flavors, the execution fell flat for me. I visited on a Tuesday so ordered a couple dishes from the dim sum menu alongside apps. We got the Siu Mai Tradicional, Szechuan Chili Wontons, Kam Lu Wantan, and the Dancing Yucca. The siu mai and fried wontons were pretty basic - not bad but nothing special, especially priced at more than $1 per dumpling. The chili wontons were my favorite but again were not anything spectacular and the wontons were the tiniest I've ever seen. I think it would have been nice to see more of a Peruvian influence on the dim sum but they were pretty much just regular dumplings - you could probably get double the portion for the same price at a Chinese restaurant and they would taste the same or better. The Dancing Yucca was the most unique, fusion-ish out of the apps we tried and it had the potential to be really good; unfortunately, I kept chewing on very tough and woody pieces in the fries, making me think that they didn't remove the core properly. For the main I tried the Salmon Donburi and was again disappointed. Salmon and avocado are both pretty bland flavors so I think the dish could have been improved immensely by tossing the salmon in some kind of sauce or marinade, or even just by seasoning the rice like sushi rice. However, everything was served completely plain (except for the two slices of pickled radish). The sauce provided to season the dish also appeared to just be plain soy sauce - even just providing a more interesting sauce could have made it taste a lot better. They probably have better entrees on the menu, so I definitely would not recommend this one. I also got the Suspiro Limena for dessert, which had a very interesting presentation. The condensed milk custard was delicious although it kind of just tasted like thickened condensed milk, and while I think the passion fruit added variety of flavor, it was INCREDIBLY sour. Because it had a light texture compared to the thick custard, it didn't really blend well even when eaten in the same bite - you're attacked first by the extreme tartness and only then does the sweetness from the custard hit. I didn't dislike it, but I don't really have a desire to eat it again. As for the service, it was a little slow. Definitely a place for lots of conversation and not for a quick weekday lunch. Two of us enjoyed lunch at China Chilcano today. It was pouring rain on a weekday, and this place looked warm and inviting. I had the set lunch for $28 which consisted of siu mai pollo, tallarin saltado de verduras (chow mein noodles), and suspiro limana (sweetened condensed milk custard topped with soft and crispy meringue and a passion fruit ice. My cousin ordered the shrimp donburi. The prices were extremely reasonable for the tastiness that was delivered to our table. The service was very good. Our waiter, Franklin, patiently answered all our questions and all his recommendations worked out great. The space is very cute and cheerfully decorated. The Chinese, Japanese and Peruvian flavors blend wonderfully. I encourage people to learn more about the history of how these elements found harmony with each other. It took a long time. read more

Another Jose Andre's restaurant off the list! It's beautifully decorated with Peruvian and Chinese/japanese influences. My boyfriend and I tried their brunch special (a selection of 3 dishes) for $34 per person (weekends only). Unfortunately the bao buns were sold out but we had the classic ceviche, yucca fries, Peruvian chicken stew, a burger, and a variety of desserts. Pricing wise it is a bit more expensive unless you go during a happy hour. Service was great. My boyfriend and I were in a bit of a rush so they were able to accommodate and pack some of our dishes to go as well. read more

Such a cute and unique restaurant! We started off with the dancing yucca and it was good! I had never seen this combination of flavors, but we were pleasantly surprised. I didn't get a photo of concolon but it was really good. Def a lot of flavor, but I grew up eating Chinese sausage so I really liked it. The char siu platter was SO. GOOD. We also ordered the lomo saltado which was so good. Oh yeah and the drinks were good too! I had a pisco sour with the passionfruit puree and it was light. I thought I would instantly love China Chilcano, but that was not the case. I'm still making my way through Jose Andres's restaurants, and this has been my least favorite. Our party of two ordered the pork belly, Ceviche de Pulpo. Dorado Siu Mai, and the Lomo Saltado. Everything was just okay. While the Dorado Sui Mai makes for a great photo op, but has very little flavor. The pork belly was the most impressive of all four dishes, but you'll need one per person. Our attempt to cut the pork belly down the middle was a success, but makes for a very small bite. The Ceviche would have been much better if served with something crispy. Maybe some crispy wonton chips, etc. Lomo Saltado was tasty and is slightly different from what you'll find in the traditional dish, more Asian flavored. It was served with a small side of jasmine rice. Fast and friendly service. The basic décor reminds me a bit of Jaleo. The only thing that really caught my eyes were the male/female restroom signs. I'm willing to get it another shot, but we just weren't impressed with the food and overall experience. read more

Ah, I was excited to try China Chilcano since I've had great experiences at Jose Andres restaurants so far. However, this experience was not the best. My friends and I made a reservation a couple weeks in advance but it was not necessary since the restaurant was empty when we got there (early January, weekday)! We were seated on the left side on a wooden bench area. Upon sitting down and reviewing the menu, we realized there were a couple mosquitos flying around. I looked underneath the table and saw five more mosquitos chilling on my leg. We moved to another table but the damage was done, my legs were so itchy for the rest of the meal and I could not concentrate on the food! Why were there so many mosquitos in the middle of the winter in the restaurant? As for the food, I did like it. We got the Lunch in Lima experience. I told the waitress I had allergies and she gave me an allergy menu that pointed out what allergens were in each dish. Our server was also very conscious of my allergies and would tell me which dishes I should not touch. I got the Siu Mai Pollo, Donburi Ji Song (without peanuts), and the Pondaraciones de Kiwicha. The first two Siu Mai and Donburi were fine. They were nothing special. The dessert was amazing! I loved the mix of banana ice cream and chocolate ice cream, and the texture of the spiral cookie was fantastic. Our table also got the Concolon to share but with the donburis it was a lot of rice and carbs. It's really interesting how the restaurant is marketed as a fusion of Chinese, Chilean, and Peruvian... there was honestly the same amount of Japanese influence as Chinese influence on the menu. Donburis and Sashimi are Japanese. The dim sum fusion was interesting but did not stand out too much. I think the Lunch in Lima was a great deal but I would not come back. read more

I really enjoyed my lunch the other day at china chilcano. The atmosphere and decor in the restaurant is very eclectic, colorful and fun! The menu is a mix of Japanese, Peruvian and Chinese food with so many incredible options! I went with my boyfriend and we split 5 dishes. The siu mai just about melted in my not mouth and I loved every bite of the! The fish ceviche was incredible! I really enjoyed the table side presentation of the Concolon. I have never tasted something like this dish, it blew me away. Although I personally found it slightly sweet I would recommend anyone to get this dish! read more

This was an interesting concept that fell a little short for me. Asian inspired Peruvian food or vice versa. Either way, the menu seemed to lack identity. We opted to stay with traditional Peruvian food and go for the Aji de Gallina. What is supposed to be a simple rustic chicken stew. It was good but not quite right. It was really thick with not enough potato, olives, or egg. It actually tasted like canned Sweet Sue chicken and dumplings without the dumplings. Just a bit disappoint especially at the exorbitant prices they charge. What WAS really good were the yucca fries. The mayo sauce they come in is outstanding. They also have really good Peruvian beer on the menu which is always good even at $8 a bottle. All in all China Chilcano just falls a bit short. read more

How is the parking situation? Especially for Friday's night. Thank you.
Our rez was for 9pm and we found street parking around the corner. There's also lots you can pull into around the corner. But cars were pulling in and out on the street so give it a shot first.

Yes they have outdoor seating that allows for space for a dog!
Is there normally a line for lunch?
No. We've walked right in and seated right away a few times....never a line at lunch time in my experience.
