I think Doi Moi has gone a bit downhill for me. I love their banh mi sandwich but I've been a couple times and haven't felt the same way I did my first time. I will say I love the shaken beef and their noodles and I think both are really well seasoned... but aside from that I think there are a lot of misses. For example their whole fish felt a bit one dimensional and their duck curry sounded good on paper but there was practically no curry which was such a bummer. I did not get a picture of the drunken noodles because we devoured them so quickly. It wasn't too saucy and there was a good amount of vegetables. The spice/heat was light. Finally, we did two orders of the whole fried fish with sticky rice. I can't say how much I enjoyed this. Had the perfect crisp on the outside and the meat was still tender. The spice blend was on point and the sauce took it to another level. My mouth is still watering thinking about it. The gin cocktail I had was a bit sweet for my taste, but otherwise my friends enjoyed their wine selections. We didn't have a reservation but they were able to accommodate us on the high tables. I've only been a handful of times, but on my most recent visit--chosen from a list of restaurants I gave to a close friend visiting from Florida--I finally got to sample a wide range of menu items. The main floor offers varied seating, an open kitchen (which I love), and a lively bar. Downstairs feels almost like a speakeasy--dim lighting, bold colors, and cozy nooks with beaded curtains that add a little mystery and privacy. Honestly, it's a whole vibe. We went on Monday night and were likely among the last guests seated--and the last to leave--but we ate very well. We started with drinks, the Kimoto Dragon, which wasn't our favorite. It leaned overly bitter, and the ginger and honey notes didn't really come through. I'm convinced the bartender didn't make it correctly, but what do I know? Everything else, though, was exceptional. Our second round of drinks were daiquiris. I had the banana flavor and enjoyed it. We ordered the wings and the Tháp Mǎu (sample tower), which included chicken dumplings, beef jerky (sensational), pork and shrimp spring rolls, and pork belly bao buns. Each dish came with its own dipping sauce, all of which were thoughtfully paired--adding depth, cutting through the richness, and elevating every bite. We also ordered the Sài Gòn Fried Rice, made with jasmine rice, sausage, shrimp, mushrooms soy sauce, and scallions. The portion was generous, but that didn't stop us from scraping the bowl clean--absolutely superb. And did I mention the wings? So good we ordered them twice! Super crispy, flavorful, and piping hot! The sauces and pickled vegetables complement them perfectly. Doi Moi has yet to disappoint me--perfect for an impromptu lunch, date night, or group meal. I went with a small party on a Saturday night, and the restaurant was pretty busy and quite warm inside. I was sweating pretty soon after being seated. The servers were all nice and offered some recommendations for our drinks and entrees though. The drinks were fine, and I think the cocktails were more reasonably priced than the food. The food was sub-par at best. I ordered the Sai Gon fried rice, and it tasted like home cooking - but not in a "wow this is so authentic" way, more so in a "my child helped me prep this dish" way. There were pieces of onion skin, super stringy onion pieces, and giant chunks of only partially chopped up onion throughout my dish. If I'm paying $23 for an entree, I really would expect it to be more refined. My partner also tried the stir fried noodles and that dish was pretty bland overall. I will also note that a friend of ours has a garlic allergy and when asked what options on the menu could be made without garlic, the waiter relayed that she could only have dessert or a plain salad with lime juice as the dressing. I find it hard to believe the French fries couldn't be made without garlic? They also have summer rolls and sides of vegetables on the menu that likely can be made without garlic too. I know a lot of the menu is made of marinated meat, and cross contamination could have been an issue, so we didn't argue. But it did feel pretty dismissive and unhelpful. read more

The assortment of food was impressive -- vibrant, flavorful, and clearly made with fresh ingredients. Even in takeout form, the quality and presentation held up beautifully. As for drinks, I had the Kimoto Dragon which was good as a drink itself, but I was not a fan of the Coconut Cherry foam it had on top. I think I'd get it next time without it... While Doi Moi does have many items labeled as gluten free, most of them are fried in a shared fryer and are cross contaminated. Which was a shame because I really wanted to try the chicken wings based on the video I saw. This time I tried to add the chicken and I asked the server what type of chicken is a lemongrass chicken that's added to the dish. It was told it was chicken breast. My boyfriend and I came here on the very first day they offered bottomless brunch and oh my goodness we were delightfully surprised! We had the absolute best time - almost all of their dishes were amazing and I wish we had the stomach capacity to eat everything because there were other items that we didn't get a chance to try. Some of our favorites were the shrimp toast, the pink panther mocktail, the bread basket with its honey butter, lemongrass chicken noodles, and the pork belly crepes. I also loved the mango and blue sticky rice (it's the butterfly pea flower sauce that gives it the lovely blue color). Doi Moi had been on my mental must-visit list for a whiiiiile, so when a friend suggested we meet here for dinner, I was excited. The spoiler alert is this: I had a good experience overall (thanks to the service and ambiance), but find it unlikely that I'll opt to go back anytime soon (the food was not impressive at all, and in some cases kinda bad actually). The cuisine is Vietnamese street food, which was influenced by French cuisine. Fresh vegetables and herbs plus some heat (spicy) create uniquely tasting offerings. Food is served right after it's cooked, so everything is fresh and flavorful but will come in whatever order it's cooked The Drunken Noodles, a signature dish, are rice noodles mixed with various vegetables seasoned with basil, fresh ginger, chili paste and soy. It has balanced flavors with a kick. The Crispy Brussel Sprouts is flavored with vegetarian nurc cham, which contains lime, sugar, garlic, chili but is missing the usual fish sauce base. Added was crispy shallots. It was vibrant and spicy. We ordered a total of 12 dishes, only two of those dishes were good. That's crazy! I swear I am not trying to be picky, the food sincerely wasn't good. All the food was delicious and came out relatively quickly, and it's kind of the perfect set up if you wanna try a bunch of different flavors. Our favorites were the brussels sprouts and the tofu! My friend and I had only ordered drinks and did not dine, while another group we encountered there maintained an entirely separate tab. Despite this, my friend was presented with an additional charge of nearly $60 for items we are certain we did not order. This reflected a concerning lack of attention to accurately tracking orders at the table. As we were preparing to leave, the server also stopped me to request an additional $5 payment for the Coke back. I paid the charge without objection; however, it had not been communicated that requesting a small chaser would result in being charged for a full unopened can of Coca-Cola. Had this been clarified in advance, the misunderstanding could easily have been avoided. Recommendations: **Ratatouille Curry** Gluten-free, vegan, and goodness galore: in a deep bowl and complemented with white rice, the dish is super fresh, served hot with slight heat, and boasts great textures with the crunch of the onions and the soft pillowy tofu and the uneven texture of eggplant. I didn't taste whole peanuts, but I saw peanuts in the description of this item. SO SO GOOD! **Crispy Spiced Tofu** Man, the tofu was on point. We were in D.C. checking out a jazz show which by the way was outstanding and we decided to stop in this spot. For a little snack and some cocktails. Customer service in this place is A 1 absolutely impeccable. I recently took my brother out for his birthday for dinner. I gave him about 15 different restaurants to choose from and he chose Doi Moi. I've been here many of times and it is typically the location I highly recommend guest visiting DC. The waiter was great. My favorite item on the menu is the Sai Gon fried rice. My brother and I substituted the sausage for steak which was one of the best decisions we made all night. The vibes downstairs were great (dim lighting good music).
