Price: Unethical/mysterious $12.00 for 2 papausas, and when asked, this is more than menu, She said "prices have gone up. Honestly, don't know how to feel, came in and this transient looking lady was at the counter, saw us and left the restaurant. We were looking at the menu and I didn't want anything but my white boyfriend wanted chilaquiles. I mentioned him being white because when it was time to order, she asked what we wanted, I said I'm good and my boyfriend started to order chilaquiles. She looked at me and said "does he know what he ordered?" Then asked me in Spanish if i wanted everything on them, ignoring him. Let me start by saying that all the food here is terribly GREASY, it's hard to get the OILY flavor out of your mouth let alone clothes. Sad to say, but we THREW it all away, because of how greasy it was and the lack of seasoning, everything was so plain, what a waste of $70!! The food here is made on the fly with no kind of love. We ordered a Pan Con Pollo and as you can see in the picture they didn't even bother to take the BONES out of the chicken ON BOTH ENDS!! The Flautas (Taquitos) lacked so much flavor, they tasted as if our entire order was cooked in the same grease. Pupusas tastes so much like oil that not even the watered down sauce helped. Had a really filling and delicious brunch. The salvadorian breakfast was a great balance of different things. And the pupusas were up there with the best I've ever had. They treated us like family so the service was key as well. We had never tried this place and it did not disappoint. Were glad we found it. The vibes were family driven and we really enjoyed our breakfast/ lunch here at this place. They also had plenty of soups and some mexican food items. Something I will look forward too. read more

STEPH JUDGEMENT: Unassuming hole in the wall with great pupusas. The hubby and I were looking for a quick lunch in the area and pupusas sounded great. BTW, they have many other Salvadorean and Mexican items on the menu, lest you think they only have pupusas here. We placed an order for 2 vegetarian, one bean and cheese, and one loroco pupusas. The lady told us it would be about 20 minutes so we went for a little walk around the block. We decided to eat our food at Houghton Park, about a mile up the street, and it turned out to be a very nice picnic. Something we should have requested, though, were paper plates, as the pupusas were just wrapped in foil and they happened to have little holes in them which made for a bit of a mess when we put the slaw and the watery spicy sauce on top of the pupusas. Oh well, something to remember for next time! I'm glad it wasn't overly packaged, actually. On to the food, which was great in every way: generously sized, fresh, and well-made. They were all good but the bean and cheese was my favorite. We were pretty full after just one so we saved the others for a snack later, and they were still delicious after microwaving. So excited we found out about this place--we'll definitely be back! read more

I am a big fan of Chiltepe's Pupusas however, for some reason they are not consistent. Some days I wish I had bought more and other days I wonder if they have a different chef. I wish they were good / the same, every day. But just as I say this, I think I would weigh about 50 pounds more than I do now because the pupusa's would be so good! read more

The staff were terrific, but the food was not nearly as impressive. We tried the azada and the pork pupusas. They were large, but there was very little filling (nearly nonexistent) and they were extremely greasy. The tomato sauce that accompanies them was delicate and I would return for that any time. However, the slaw was not pleasant. We also tried the azada burrito "wet" (covered in green sauce.) The green sauce was sadly lacking flavor. The burrito was filled primarily with rice and a little very tough and very, very salty meat. The radishes were fresh and crisp and very much the star of this show. read more

We walked in for the 1st time, and it looked clean, but the window seal was dirty, dead fly, spiderweb, and the menue dirty. We were going to order the food ( yes, even though it didn't look clean). The guy that was getting ready to take our order said, " The prices have gone up a little " me. Ok, how much is the carne encebollada?" He said 19. Ok, that's not a little on the menue it said 11.50. That's 8. Dollars more than what it's saying here and on the website. We walked out the portal was 14. We are not eating here. All of the prices are on the website and in person. read more

It's divey, casual, and I had to swat away a large mosquito since I was sitting next to a large open window but the FOOD shined. I got the Caldo de Camaron (Shrimp soup) and a Rebueltas Pupusa. I didn't realize the soup also came with 2 thick tortillas and a plate of mixed rice so it obviously became too much food for me. But the important part was the soup with the huge shrimp and the cheesy pupusa, which came with a jar of pickled veggies that cut down the richness and went well with everything. It was SO satisfying. The soup was creamy, had large chunks of veggies, and juicy shrimp. Definitely a winner. Would love to come back to try more different soups, pupusas and maybe the breakfast! read more

When I showed her the menu prices she claimed that "other customers scratch off the stickers that state the new prices" when asked how much a specific appetizer item was, she stated the price was $13.00. When I pulled up a different menu from the pile, the "adjusted" price on said sticker was $7.95. Such a shame that they feel they can take advantage of unsuspecting customers. Our First Time at the place. Waitress said prices have changed.. I said; I wouldn't know, it was our first time here. We open menu saw SOME prices changed with a pen and tape. We saw all the prices.. to our surprise, when the bill came, our bill was double from prices on menu.. came in, sat down by myself on a rainy day on a long lunch break. nobody greeted me, very cold there, but those that were inside and had ordered all spoke amongst each other in Spanish. Since they kinda ignored me sitting there, and after sitting for about 5-10min, I walk up and ask for a menu. Stood there, looking through the menu.. kinda already knew what I wanted. Ordered 2 pupusas revueltas. They cost like $3 each... tell me why I was charged $10.13 13 cents so I have a crap ton of change... and tax off $6+ isn't upwards $4???? She didn't use a calculator or a register, just wrote on a ticket $10.13 no card accepted. Now, I would've left, but of course, it was pouring and I had a long lunch break but not THAT long. My plan was to order some pupusas cause I was craving them, sit inside this "cute" restaurant on a rainy day and enjoy my lunch in peace, without having to rush. NOPE. I sat there about 45 min(almost my entire break) waiting for the pupusas, coulda swore someone that came in after me left before me... and I had TWO PUPUSAS. I'm Hispanic.. I'm mixed. Where I grew up, you couldn't tell I was mixed. I fit right in. But Long Beach Hispanics are somethin else. This isn't the first time I felt racially judged. And sure I don't speak fluent Spanish, more like Spanglish and I understand it mostly.. but this was wild to me. I felt hated here. Finally, my two pupusas were ready and I made sure she didn't leave out the cabbage and salsa.. cause if I didn't say it, it would have been left out too. She gave it to me in a plastic bag tied up... others got plates... so painfully awkward. It was like take this. BYE. I ran out to my car in the pouring rain... sitting there shaking my head. Like what the heck. I felt bullied it was almost comical... like latin mean girls. So much was said yet hardly anything was said at all. Anyway, I'll never go back. And when anyone asks for good pupusa places near by I make sure not to mention them they don't even exist. Such and such place over here is ok.. so and so place is good.. xyz place is far but the pupusas are big... but THIS place will never be brought up. Their taste wasnt memorable enough.. whether they were good or bad, their existence is obscure. I've told many people about many places, and theyve gone based off my recommendations. Food is good not great just good. Prices are a bit high for me with the exception of the pupusas which are 2.50 everywhere u go. They do charge u ONE DOLLAR AND FIFTY CENTS to use your debit card if your order is under $7 so if u are just going for a light lunch of two pupusas well u can't. U have to get something else unless u willing to pay 1.50. The place is a bit dirty and the menus are like from three decades ago. The people there r not friendly or rude they are just there lol. There's not much to choose from the menu compare to other places that sell mexican and salvadorian food. Great El Salvadorian Food! We live in the neighborhood, have driven by several times saying "We should check it out sometime" We finally did and found our second hidden gem of a resteraunt. Both in the same week! The other is a nice Peruvian place (El Pollo Imperial) about a half mile north of this place.The place is is small, and unassuming, but don't let that fool you. The owners are very friendly, and the food is GREAT and very reasonable. The poppusas (spelling) are the bomb and everything is made fresh. Came here for late breakfast, had a typical salvadorian breakfast and bistec encebollado, food is great, tortillas are home made, place is clean the service it's a bit slow but worth the wait, make sure You ask for the dressing, or else they'll put what ever they want on the salad that comes with the lunch menu, don't expect to find great coffee, just your average, but the Food was very fresh and presentation was nice, see picture.
