The pupusas here are very good. I usually get the bean and cheese ones. The prices are reasonable too

Came here twice in the last moth. Both times the waitress grabbed our food with her bare and unwashed hands. I am a bit of a germaphobe so i don't take stuff like that very lightly. I didn't make a scene because I was there both times with family but I could totally do without the food grabbing next time. The wait time is also very long but seeing as how they make everything fresh when ordered, we didn't mind. We had pupusas both times. My father loved them and so did my mother and brother the second time. The red sauce was extremely watered down for my liking and the curtido was missing something that I couldn't quite catch. Overall, the food was decent considering the low prices. As for the decor, It is super outdated. The bathroom is smelly and tiny. All in all, good food, good prices we will be back again or maybe just order over the phone next time! :) read more

Having had plenty of Salvadoran food in NYC and raving about pupusas to my family, my dad wanted to try them while we were all visiting my brother in Long Beach so he found this place, thanks to Yelp. This little restaurant is homely, minimally decorated and is obviously a favorite among locals. Not only does Chiltepe offer Salvadoran eats but also Mexican. But why eat Mexican here when it's all about El Salvador cuisine! We also found out at the end of our meal that they deliver but we didn't ask how far out they will go. The food here is freshly made, which you can tell by not only the taste, but also the fact that it takes a while to get your dish. But the patience pays off when that plate arrives! I had both the asada con queso and chicarron con queso pupusa. Both were very good and of a filling size. The curdito (Salvadoran cole slaw), Salvadoran cheese and Salvadoran cream that came with it were also as good. Pupusas~ mmmm! I was on yelp earlier and I bookmarked a whole bunch of Salvadorian restaurants in search of pupusas. For some reason I missed this one. I didn't look on page 2, I guess. My bf and I were actually on our way to get dinner at El Pollo Imperial, but my mind was on pupusas still! Don't get me wrong, I love El Pollo Imperial, but I felt like something hearty, with meat and gooey cheese in a masa pancake of yumminess! As I drove us down the street, I spied this Salvadorian restaurant and said, "Can we try that place for dinner?" I'm so glad we did. We got it to go. I got two pupusas... the pollo and queso and the asada and queso. Both were delicious. We waited for a good 20 minutes, but it was well worth the wait! I'm stuffed now. The only thing is that they don't serve it with sour cream. (Good thing we had some in our fridge at home.) My bf had a carnitas burrito (dry). It was stuffed with meat, rice, beans, and cheese. I had a bite of it~ it was good. Tips: (1) Call in your order beforehand. (2) Try it with sour cream and tortilla chips (have some at home). (3) Go before it gets dark...the freaks come out at night~ a tall, amazon woman hooker was standing on the sidewalk a few feet away from the 99cent store...my bf says it's because there's a motel a block away. read more

It's a small place up in North Long Beach. I was shocked at how great the Papusas were, I had the chiccarron and cheese and chorizo and cheese. Both were excellent. Free chips too!! You get some salad with your papusas as well. Honestly it's such a steal, would go again and again! read more

Drooool. The pupusas here never fail to satisfy a craving. Enfurtido: the oregano is a nice touch and the veggies have a nice crunch. Habanero salsa: really spicy. Zuchinni pupusa and bean with jalapeno (special order) are our go-to. The ladies here are really nice and take their work seriously which shows in the food and how they are with customers. This is the only spot I come to for pupusas. They make them right there. Today my waiting was 20min for 6 pupusas. If you don't want to wait they will take an order over the phone for pick up. The 5 starts is b/c of the service and food. This is not a fancy place but it is welcoming. read more

Been going here for years! I was a away the last few, but yesterday I was able to stop in with a few friends. The pupusas are still amazing and affordable! I love it. So delicious! I won't go anywhere else because I like them here so much. Had some sangria and flautas. A bit bummed because he flautas changed. They used to be two big juicy loaded flautas with rice, beans, salsa, and a little salad. Though the sides are the same, it had small flautas that were slightly dry and looked like taquitos. Overall, still one of my favorite places to grab a bite! Their soups are amazing as well! read more

Chiltepe serves pupusas that are about as good as I've had. It's a simple dish, served with the standard curtido and tomato sauce. I went with a Salvadoran friend who was very impressed with the quality of the pupusas, the yucca and overall experience and price. The prices are fair also. These Pupusa's are legit and not over priced like most places nowadays. I've tried the queso con chicharron and queso con loroco Pupusa's about 5 times now and they always satisfy. They miss a star because the first time I had their pupusas, they were doughy. My friend had salpicón and that was delicious. They definitely used fresh ingredients, and seasoned well. The rice was delicious too, so In spite of their pupusas fail, I decided to go back and try something different. On my second visit I got yuca con chicharon, they can definitely flavor their food. Their pupusas were big! I underestimated how big they would be. I'm a little disappointed in how watered down their salsa was. I enjoyed their bean and cheese pupusas more than I did their revueltos and that's kind of disappointing. Can't complain with this one. Was debating between tacos, agua fresca, flan or something different. Went with Pupusas. Been craving them for a while anyways. Went with 3 revueltos (Chicharon, beans & cheese... recommend it!) 3 Pupusas with Chicharon (fried pork skin cooked with homemade salsa)& cheese. Pupusas are a good size. Curtido on the side. Came with a red sauce for the Pupusas. There sauce had a mild hot sauce taste. Not spicy nor flavorful. Has a slight tomato taste. All in all very mild... Think it's meant to be used sparingly. Ordered the Queso flan, Coconut flan, Cajeta flan & Banana empanadas con leche. Queso Flan taste like a light flavored flan mixed with queso fresco. Not too sweet, cheesy nor pungent. Mine was still thawing though. Didn't see it as a problem though. Gave time for the food to go down before moving to dessert. The coconut flan has a bit of shredded coconut inside. It's pretty good if you like coconut, but also good if you're not crazy about it. Again, it's has a light taste. Moving on to the Cajeta flan. It's sweet, but I think the cajeta was used to sweeten the flan not really give it that strong cajeta flavor. Does taste a bit like Cajeta though. I loved it. Lastly, ordered the Banana empanadas con leche. It looked like a fried Platano macho with cheese inside. Couldn't really stomach it because it tasted like if it was dipped in brandy (that could have just been me... it was all fresh & very hot). Would have been better if they gave a side of Dulce de Leche for that. Maybe a big drizzle of Dulce de Leche. Actually going to try it again you get 3 empanadas. It's worth your money. read more

I went here because I was looking for a new place within walking distance to take my daughter for lunch. I had driven past many times but being unaware of Salvadoran food I wasn't sure what I would think. The good reviews pushed me over the edge and we went today. I had two pupusas along with chips and salsa with a soft drink for a little over $6, leaving very full and very satisfied. I called in my order, arrived there 15 minutes later, and my order was ready. I drove back home, a 15 minute drive, and my pupusas we're steaming hot! I topped it with the sauce and curtido and they were absolutely delicious! The best pupusas I've ever had! For $20 I got 5 revueltas, 2 queso, and a M horchata. Although it's kind of a hole in the wall in a rough area of North Long Beach, it's a clean place and the staff was friendly.
