Tallarín 13. Tallarines Verdes con Res (y mucha papa)

Picked up my daughter at the Miami airport, 9:20 PM Thursday night and she wanted Peruvian food. We love La Perla but kitchen closes around 9:30 and we were far away so a quick search showed this place near FIU, open until midnight... we decided to give it a try not knowing what to expect. First we thought we would get some Chifa, (Peruvian Chinese food) but we got here, looked at the place- it's a small hole in the wall type humble run-down locale, and the lady told us the cook was Peruvian... so with great trepidation we decided to switch lanes and get some simple Peruvian classics: Lomo Saltado, tallarín verde con carne and some yuquitas con salsa huancaina to share, as well as some chicha morada to drink... and we crossed our fingers. We were the only table. The tv was blasting some cheesy Spanish soap-opera and the lady watched it but took care of us as well. We saw some to-go orders picked up so I guessed the place does keep busy that way... The food came out fast, the yuquitas were well prepared and with a bountiful bowl of huancaina: all Good, maybe needed a bit more hotness. Then the 2 main dishes appeared. They did not have a great presentation- as you can see in the photo, but they did have an OK taste. Not wonderful, and one can tell the ingredients are not high quality, which does not reflect on the very high price. The food was overall tasty, the meat pieces were tender, so we ate our simple meal, did not take the left overs home (big serving of pasta and potatoes), and left. In all, we were charged $87 that included the gratuity already added in the bill- (18%? this annoyed me a bit). I feel that for the type of setting, service and quality of food, this should have been a $50 dinner: at that price, this place would have a 3.5 star rating: so yes very pricy. I cannot recommend and will probably never return... But hey, at least it's open late and the food was ok tasting.

Located across the street from the main FIU campus within a shopping plaza is Chifa Don Jose, a small and locally owned. It's is a humble Peruvian and Chinese fusion with authenticity. As far as the Chinese-oriented dishes, they definitely get my A+ rating! I came on a Sunday around 4pm and wanted to try their Asian-oriented dishes. Their Chaufa and Tallarin Salatado are so flavorful! It tastes exactly as if I was in Peru. Chaufa is a Peruvian version of fried rice and Tallarin Saltado is a noodle stir-fry with veggies. They made it to a T. For both I got the "especial (special)" version that comes with a variety of meats including pork and chicken. I agree with another Yelper it may not be the best "date spot" atmosphere as it's more casual and humble rather than elegant or trendy. However the food is good. There is only inside seating , the server was nice, and the parking was easy.

I wanted to come to this place to try the food with the hubby. We ordered a fish ceviche which was delicious and fresh, we also had fried fish chunks which was also very good. The plate of rice and beans hit the spot. This is definitely a hole in the wall but aren't these places usually surprisingly good!!!!! This is a mom and pop place the owner is the waiter and so far he has been attentive.

First of all, I don't know how people can give this place less than four stars. The restaurant is small and in a corner of the Publix shopping center on 107. It is a blended cuisine of Peruvian with Asian if I'm not mistaken. I went on a Sunday night and the owners are your waitress and the cook. They are a powerful team of two! The food is delicious--sincerely some of the best Peruvian food I've tasted in Miami. We got the Lomo Tallarines, Tallarines Verdes, Causa, and the Arroz Chaufa. Everything was soooo good and very tasty--you can tell their heart for their country is on that plate! We did notice that their Causa is a bit different--it has corn and peas...we weren't fans of that but overall the rest of the food was great. If there is anything I can guarantee of this place is that you pay for a GOOD portion of food. When I tell you that the size of the plate is bigger than your face, I mean it . If you like to eat a lot then grab a chair, sit down, and open the buttons on your jeans. Get ready. Try this place!

What this restaurant lacks in presentation skills and attention to detail, it absolutely makes up (and more) in terms of taste, originality, and desire to satisfy its clientele. Peruvian/Chinese food is Peru's Sunday food, mostly because mom is not cooking that day but most likely because the house maid has to get at least ONE day off. In other words, Sunday is the de facto day to rest across the board and everyone goes out to eat (or orders take-out) on Sundays, and that makes everyone from Lima an expert in this type of cuisine. Having been raised in Lima, and because of my seniority, (ahem), I know Peruvian/Chinese food very well. When I walk into any of these ethnic restaurants, I can't help not to ask for dishes that are not on the regular menu. Think of going to a Japanese restaurant and asking to see the Japanese menu. Same applies to Chinese restaurants and dim sum. The first time I came to Chifa Don Jose, I got tallarin saltado (lo mein) and chi jau kay (breaded chicken in oyster sauce). The meat in the lo mein was seasoned really well, the sauce was good and the noodles weren't overcooked. I specially liked the amount of vegetables used, one of the reasons I like "real" Chinese food. The chi jau kay (chicken in oyster sauce) was also well made, and the sauce was perfect. It was very good, although the lo mein dish outshined the chicken by far. Knowing that this was a reliable Chifa, and that the food was good, I started to frequent this place. Of course, the second time that I showed up, I asked for "off the menu" items. I asked for a chicken noodle soup. Not on the menu, but easily made. This soup is a version of a ramen soup, much lighter, but equally delicious, and full of vegetables. More importantly, I made sure the portion was large, just like a ramen bowl. Needless to say, the soup hit the right spot. On subsequent visits, I have followed the same pattern. They have made egg drop soup for me, fish chunks with lemon and Chinese cinnamon dip, vegetable egg foo young, among other things. But that is not where my madness stops. On my most recent visit, I asked them to make a dish for me. I asked for fried chicken chunks with Chinese vegetables in an oyster sauce. Of course, this is not just oyster sauce, they add anise and other aromatics to it, and "my" dish was just delicious. Outstanding. That is when I had a revelation. If this place paid attention to detail, refined the flavors, changed the décor and improved the service (Oh! Yes, one person runs all the tables), this place could be the next best thing in Miami. No doubt about it. But of course, you need someone in tune with America's food trends, Miami's idiosyncrasies, and that magic touch that differentiates a great restaurant from a bust. Until then, I will keep coming here, talking to the staff, having them cook stuff out of my imagination, and enjoying some good Chifa.

Food is great if you've tried real chifa before you know the deal. The waitress is great, she's patient and smiles a lot.

We really had never tried Ceviche before, but the online menu really looked spectacular. Our waitress was Angie, and she was fantastic. Such a great personality, and she went out of her way to explain all the details before we ordered. It's actually disappointing that we are just passing through and may never go back, because I would seriously like to try every last item. Rather than bore you with the list of everything we ordered, I'll share what we considered to be the best of the best. CALAMARI... we both love calamari, and we have eaten this dish at many different places. This was the best ever. Perfect. CEVICHE DE SALMON EN CANASTA DE TOSTON... seriously one of the most delicious things I have ever put in my mouth. While we did order both the ceviche camaron and the ceviche trio mixto, the hands-down winner, no questions asked, was the CEVICHE DIVINO. We finished with the TORTA DE CHOCOLATE and the smoothest, creamiest cup of coffee ever. My wife is a chocolate cake expert, and while I was finishing all the ceviche, she was having an out of body experience with the cake. I have to say that while we are borderline foodies and love cooking and eating, we probably are not the most adventurous. So glad today was different, and so thrilled with our decision to eat here. 10/10
