Went to this restaurant last week. Here my review: The service It was not great. We had reservation with our platinum club member card (usually got priority) and yet we did not get our reservation time. We had the reservation since a day before. They just merely said that it took longer than expected. We had to wait for about 30-45 minutes from our reservation time. The server was OK. It was not that bad. Yet, coming from restaurant with quite a high price in the menu and so-called premium dining in peppermill, it was definitely not live up to the reputation. The food To be frankly. I am a big fan of chinese food. I have tried chinese food all over the world. This one is definitely not in the top 50. All the food is not authentic anymore. It was Americanize. The food were kind of plain. The only thing that is not too bad is the peking duck. It was not that bad compared to the one i have tasted in China. Although, their desserts were better than main dishes. The atmosphere From outside it looks good. It looks premium. When you go inside, it was kind of just OK. It was dark and reddish. They tried to make you feel so chinese-sy but fail ! However, it was a good place if you want to have chit chat with friends. Not too noisy. The location Well.. it is inside casino so very convenient. No explanation needed Would i recommend people to come here and eat ? Probably not. You can find a lot cheaper chinese food with better taste outside. read more

I have had better Asian food at a mall food court. Nothing authentic what so ever. Complete Americanized crap...just awful, and the service wasn't much better. read more

The Chi is the Peppermill's new chinese restaurant located inside their casino, in what used to be their steakhouse. I was very excited to hear about it, because I loooooove chinese food! When I stepped inside, bells went off in my head when I saw an entirely asian staff (whereas the rest of the Peppermill is a cosmopolitan mix of races and creeds that I've come to expect - as a result, the "bells" went off in what appeared to me to be a poor attempt to project a sense of "authenticity" or credibilty to be manufactured with their staff choice (or perhaps Chi is privately owned and just located in the Peppermill, and the staffing is coincidence and I'm wrong - either way, it didn't look good to me when I first stepped in - if it was an ordinary restaurant back home in the bay area, I wouldn't have given it a second thought, but since it was in the Peppermill, I called schenanogans). The restraunt decor was absolutely gorgeous! They even kept the "peppermill" feel with red neon lights underneath the seating providing a glow that worked well with the black and gold through the rest of the facility. My friends and I ordered what are usually my three favorites, Lemon Chicken, Sweet and Sour Pork, and Mongolian beef. All were "meh". I was very disappointed in the taste of food that I was serverd here. I'm from the San Francisco bay area, and in comparison to what I would call average in the bay, Chi rates "below average" to "way below average". The fried rice that was served with the meal was also pretty bland. I looked at what was served at the table (we ordered the family meal that is $24 a head) and said to myself "This meal was not anywhere near worth $75 (there were three of us). The only redeeming factor (besides the beautiful decor) was the gelato that was served to me at dessert. I had their lychee gelato, and holy cow was that spectacular! I don't plan on returning to Chi, unless I feel like getting their lychee gelato. I certainly hope their food improves, and that I hear about it, because I would love the opportunity to come back with a redeeming review for Chi(meaning I had an awesome meal). I hate the fact that I'm the first poster, and I'm giving this place a crummy review. =o( I'm rooting for you Chi! I'd love to be able to expect to have a great chinese meal at the Peppermill! (I visit the peppermill 3 - 4 times a year) read more

As a group of three, we decided to each order an entree and share. To start, an appetizer of vegetable spring rolls. We split separate dishes consisting of roasted duck, honey walnut shrimp and sweet / sour pork. They offer two styles of cooked duck, which was nice to see. The duck and shrimp far exceeded my expectations. I did not sample the pork. Each choice came with either steamed or white rice. We ordered a side of brocolli as a substitute for one rice dish. The service was very quick and if I am back at the Perpermill, would not hesitate to eat here again. read more

This restaurant have its good dish and bad dish. Nobody's perfect. NOTE: I lean towards Chinese dish that can't be found at Panda Express. I believe that if you come to this restaurant, you have to try something other than your ordinary Chinese dish. This review is based on: Time of visit: weekend 5-6 P.M. no reservation needed. Non holiday weekend. A party of five. This restaurant is not that busy around that time frame. Service is always great. This restaurant can get expensive real fast depending on the dish you order. Environment: Very well decorated like an upscale restaurant. Locate inside the Peppermill casino/hotel. As a result, depending on where you sit, you might smell a cigarette smoke inside the dining area. Now, onto the food. Note: These dish/soup mention below, i personally would give 5 star on. Appetizer: "Deep Fried Calamari in Spicy Salt." If you love spicy salt and pepper type dish, this will not disappoint you. Lightly battered in spicy salt mix with chop up bell pepper laying at the bottom of the dish. It's truly a delicious starter. The calamari is not chewy at all. It's very tender. Soup: "Fish Maw with Crabmeat Soup." Fish maw is technically a fish bladder. It doesn't taste fishy nor raw. It also combined with a fair amount of crabmeat. Adding a little bit of black pepper and soy sauce, this soup is outstanding. Main dish: 1. "Lobster in salt and pepper." Note: (Market price) so this dish by itself can shot up to as much as $56 depending on the size of the lobster. Like i mention above, if you're a big fan of salt and pepper dish, this is a must. Beside the price tag, this dish is not for the faint of heart because they don't use a frozen lobster, it's cooked from live lobster. How they kill the lobster prior to cooking i have no idea. Again, lightly battered in spicy salt n pepper mix with chop up bell pepper laying at the bottom of the dish. Very fresh. The meat is sweet and tender with a taste of salt n pepper around the outside. To me, it's the best i've ever come across. Now, onto a 4 star dish: 1. Steam whole fish: Take longer cook than other dish. It's very outstanding. Fresh fish, perfect aroma of the ingredient without overpowering the fish meat. 2. Peking Duck: Not the best, but not too bad. 3. Fish Fillet with Spicy Pepper Salt: If you haven't already had enough salt and pepper dish. hehe. Now onto a not so good dish: 1. Seafood chowfun: Way too much noodle stir fry sauce is not evenly distributed around the noodle. Certain part of the noodle still stuck together thick making it tasteless. Overall: One of the best upscale Chinese restaurant you can find in Reno, NV. My review is based on the dish i order. I don't dare comment on the dish i haven't try. read more

We made a reservation for 6:30 for 5, got to Chi at 6:15. Seeing that there were a few tables empty and just one large family there before us, I figured we could be seated a little early. However, they told us we had to wait until the time of our reservation to be seated. No big deal, so we waited until 6:30 to approach the host. She then told us to wait a little longer while they got the table ready. It wasn't until 7:00 that they called us up. Service took even longer. It took the servers half an hour to get to us and another half an hour to get our food out. The portions are small and not too authentic (think one step up from Panda Express). The portions are downright small for what you pay for. Overall, with so many other nice restaurants and buffets around, I would certainly not come to eat here again. read more

Service was good. Food is tasteless. Not tasty at all. I really expect more from Peppermill restaurants this was comparable to a low end Chinese restaurant and very dissapointed especially for the price paid 200$ for this kind of food really dissapointing. They should change the food quality.o don't like Panda Express but Panda Express tastes better than Chi read more

Not authentic Chinese food. Staffs are polite but inattentive. After passing my table many times without looking, I had to wave my arms wildly like a little kid to get the waitress' attention. I ordered three dishes including a whole Peiking duck, but what was delivered was simply chopped up roasted duck without skin being served separately. Duck skin was not crunchy at all. After expressing.my disappointment with the manager, he graciously insisted to take the item off the bill. I really appreciated. read more

This place came in way below our expectations, The peking duck was just so so, stir fry tender beef with snow peas, beef not so tender very chewy, no flavor in this dish at all very plain tasting. only decent dish we had was the bbq pork spare rib. Over priced plain tasting Chinese restaurant, the videos at the hotel make it look oh so good.....save your money read more

Its on the main floor just off the slots and table games area. This is not exactly a fine dine restaurant , I found it quite casual. The decor is pretty nice. Our server was very helpful while ordering food. The wine suggested was nice. They have a good selection of vegetable entree. We liked the eggplant dish the chef suggested. we also ordered for Fried rice and shrimp. I would definitely come back here if i stay at Peppermill. read more

As I arrived I was seated right away... My server brought my drinks very quickly food arrived shortly after The shrimp fried rice had huge pieces of shrimp in it, very good. The sweet n sour chicken wasn't bad my only criticism of that dish was that the pieces of chicken were very big, like 2 inches in diameter, so you kind of lose that crunchiness to it but the flavor of the sweet n sour sauce was really good read more

Very pleased with my first visit at CHI. Restaurant has a great decor and service is good. They have a full bar that offers a variety of mixed drinks. Food is reasonable priced and portions are big enough for at least 3 people. I liked the fact that the manager came to our table to check how everything was. Our server was on top of things and she brought us some almond cookies at the end of our meal.. nice touch. We ll definitely be back soon. read more

We typically visit this location on holidays and bring family from out of town. We love that the chicken dishes, they have large pieces of white meat and plenty of food to share. If you make a reservation you will get set on time, however without you may have a half hour to an hour wait. They wait isn't too bad since you can be entertained within the casino. read more

This restaurant is in the lovely Peppermill casino. Our friends who live in Reno picked this place for dinner. Ambiance is great: fancy Asian decor with red and black colors. We sat for an early dinner, so not busy. We got excellent service. Plates finished removed fast, and they checked on us & filled waters regularly. Food was nice and tasty. I recommend for a nice meal out. Five stars are reserved for "wow" food experiences. This was a nice meal, but not a wow meal. Oh yes one more addition! The restaurant wasn't freezing like many can be. It was so nice to have my meal without shivering!!! Thank you Chi! read more

Very attentitive to detail oriented staff, and even the management comes over to check on how we're doing. This was one of the last stops for us on dinner before packing up tomorrow going back to the Bay Area. Marianna was our waitress and took our order. Man oh man, the food came out quick, from our sweet and sour chicken to the pork we ordered, both of them came with egg rolls and rice. My husband Gio ate the rolls as I did not care for them, but our order came out fast, we were impressed! The whole experience would be 10 stars if allowed. All in all things worked out right! I want to mention first off, the resturant is beautiful and our server was amazing and wonderful. This review is about the food. It did not taste well at all. The plate my boyfriend ordered was swiming in sauce. It was like "Here have some meat with your sauce." He would sit there and scrap the sauce off. Also, it stated to be spicy. He mentioned it was just sweet. I am gluten intolerant (HAKHEIUUYIWUEJK!!!) and they took that into account. I get a plate back with veggies and chicken. No problem. I love chicken as much as the next girl. It was blah. No flavor, no seasoning, nothing. Did they use water? They tell me they have gluten free soy sauce so I ask for the bottle, salt, and pepper to season my meal. The drinks were amazing! I will give them an extra star for that! The service was wonderful, the drinks were great, but the food was terrible. For the amount we paid, I expected better. I understand though, I'm gluten intolerant but man, the other person at the table was unhappy with his food. He's never not happy with food. He loves food. He would cuddle it if he could. Sorry Chi, we won't be eating at your resturant. You are lucky this was part of my package deal but it felt like a waste. read more

I had a half Peking duck - the worst I had in my life. My daughter ordered orange chicken - too sweet. Chow fan noodle needed more bean sprouts & that would have been better. We were greeted promptly with a smile and seated right away. Our server was Miriuum. She very friendly and knowledgeable. We ordered Generals Chicken, Orange Chicken, Hot & Sour Soup & Chow mein. Okay, this is going to be a long Yelp. The reason this is going to be a long Yelp is this restaurant ruined my anniversary dinner last night, but it's confusing. We hear great things about this restaurant, but what we experienced last night was not good by any means. So, the staff is nice, the restaurant has wonderful aesthetics, but then the food came. 1st, Hot and Sour Soup. I will give it a 5 out of 10, but I'm being nice. It was so thick, it was more like gravy than soup. The salt was good though, and there was PLENTY of that. As for the other ingredients, well, there's the 5. 2nd, Pot Stickers---I give them a 8 out of 10, by far the best thing I ate. We joked we should have just left right then. 3rd, Kung Pao Chicken----WTH?! 1 out of 10. First, it was more like garlic chicken what with an overabundance of the rather potent ingredient, barely tangy let alone spicey. Then I got to the chicken? It was gooey, then tough, then IDK. MY face was like that concerned emoji with the bug eyes. The waitress saw my distress as I was trying to determine if it was undercooked. Then she said, "It cannot be overcooked, we twice cook it." I do that when I stir fry, it insures the meat is cooked, good call, but my chicken resembles chicken when you eat it after I do that. This was mystery meat as far as I was concerned, and they took it back---which I almost NEVER DO. Like 5 times in my life never, I'm in the "I'll choke it down and pretend" sect. 4th) Mongolian Beef. 3 of 10--------all other ingredients other than the beef were the same as any other restaurant, nothing outstanding. The beef however was more mystery meat? WTH is going on with this place? I think they are "way" over-marinating their meats, IDK. 5) Shrimp with stir fry noodles. 3 of 10-------This was my wife's dish. By the time she was 1/4 in, she had a PILE of ginger on the side of her plate. So they mean well, but they do not label right. Mine was spicy garlic chicken and her's was ginger shrimp with noodles. I'm not being overly mean, I don't like mean, I want to praise. The girl at the gelato place named the Chef by name. "Loves the Broccoli Beef." All I can say is this. Get in a car and take a nice drive on a Friday night. Drive over to Alameda and go to Park Street, you'll have to wait as it get's packed. Pick any one of the Chinese Restaurants you want, but I would suggest going to Ark or China House and see how it's done. Come experience what these dishes are really supposed to taste like. This is not it and the reason I am unloading is these types of places are supposed to be the leaders, they are pricing things that way. One shouldn't go in there and get something less than OUTSTANDING. So CHI, go learn from the Masters in Alameda and come back cooking real outstanding dishes that couples can remember for reasons other than another anniversary dinner ruined on trusting people that are supposed to be better. read more

Have to laugh at the one and two star reviews. Seems like some have either never had high quality, superbly prepared Chinese Food, or should only eat at Chinese Fast Food outlets. First of all the Ambiance is elegant and very well appointed which is a big surprise in a casino proper. Secondly, the menu is small and offers entrees that many neighborhood restaurants never have. We dined there twice in a month, once without reservations and once with reservations. Our waiter, Edward, was a real pro and he made our experience that much more enjoyable. A waiter who knows when not to disturb diners is as valuable as an attentive person. This guy is experienced enough to make your dining experience a special one. He also was able to direct the wait and bus persons to provide excellent service at our table. Our appetizer was the Fried Calamari. Of all the Fried Calamari we have enjoyed from San Francisco to Manhattan to Alaska, this was the most delicate, most delicious Calamari we've ever had. Our main course choice was Peking Duck. In Our party of three we have had Peking Duck in some of the finest Chinese Restaurants in SF's Chinatown, Vancouver's Chinatown and in a few of the most famous Chinese restaurants in Silicone Valley. None compare to CHI's Peking Duck. Dessert? The Chocolate Cake with Mango Ice Cream was just ridiculously exquisite and I don't like chocolate. I suggest that if you encounter service related problems you should ask for the manager, Mr Lau. Insensitive and unprofessional service personnel becomes everyone's problem if not addressed immediately. As far as the "complaints" about the food, this is Not Fast Food. Complaining about the quantity of "nasty" soup and the size of "nasty" appetizer ribs???? You always have to ask for an extra teabag in ANY Chinese Restaurant. Yelp should have a separate column for the peasants and the inarticulate. read more

I love the Peppermill and have been coming here for 15 years. The ambience is lovely..This chinese restraunt though in my opinion is not good at all. So bad that my friend actually asked to speak to the manager. The Generals Chicken had such a bad flavor and the pieces of chicken were HUGE! Some were twice as big as a golf ball, and im not exagerating. The Fried Rice was bland and so was the Mongolian Beef. I love chinese but felt this just was not good chinese food. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. Yes, the decor is really nice and they spent a lot of money in making this place look like an upscale Chinese restaurant. Reservations are recommended so we made them the night before. The day of we went down and changed our reservations since we had a late lunch that day. As the hostess was flipping through the reservation list, I noticed that many of the time slots where blank. Not such a good thing in my book. We arrived at 9pm and where seated promptly. As we thought the restaurant was pretty empty. Only a hand full of tables where occupied. Our waiter was friendly but clumsy at times and not so attentive. He was a much older gentleman and didn't seem to have much experience in being a waiter. We previously did our research and we knew exactly what we wanted. We shared the Crab Rangoon, Double Boiled Shark Fin & Chicken Consomme, Braised Fish Maw, Abalone & Sea Cucumber with Chinese Mushrooms & Seasonal Greens. We also had the Asian Cosmo and Loquattini. The Crab Rangoon was very disappointing. Deep Fried Won ton wrappers which had a mixture of "crab" and cream cheese in the middle. It was accompanied by two sauces. One your basic red sweet appetizer sauce and the second was a spicy mustard powder sauce. The crab was non existent and the cream cheese over powering. The mustard sauce was way crazy open your sinuses hot. But when mixed with the red sweet sauce it was much better combination. The Shark Fin Soup was exquisite. It came with a red vinegar sauce, when drizzled it brought out the flavors in the soup. The abalone was my favorite. It reminded me of boiled beef tongue just not so soft in texture. This dish was cooked in a five spice sauce with blanched bock choi and shitaki mushrooms. The sea cucumber was gelatinous and had good flavor and texture as well. Along with a bowl of steamed rice it was a perfect meal. They did not have Fish Maw and it was missing from the dish. I would of preferred it. I have never had fish maw, but it was still good as it was. The Asian Cosmo was not a big hit for me. I would of preferred the Loquat tini. For dessert we had the egg custard. They bring you 3 chicken eggs with the firm egg custard inside. This was a nice ending to a one of a kind dinner. I would only come back to Chi for the Chefs Specials and not for the regular Chinese American dishes. If in the mood for some shark fin, abalone, and sea cucumber I would sure to come back. But I have a feeling this is only going to be once in a blue moon. Stars go for the decor, chefs specials, loquat tini and dessert. read more

Ate this for dinner last night and wasn't too impressed. Their selection is very small and are missing some items that i was looking for, orange chicken, chow mien, etc. We did order the pan-fried chicken noodles, chicken fried rice and sweet and sour chicken. We are surprised that Chi has only three stars so, when in Reno and have that got to have Chinese, or just want very good food, service and ambiance, give it a try.
