This place features tasty and interesting food, mostly traditional American Chinese but with some chef-touches, acceptable but not outstanding service, and nice decor inside the restaurant. Unfortunately that is packaged in with a real hike through the parking structure at the Peppermill and then the casino (complete with crowds, flashing lights, cigarette smoke, and lots of noise) to get *to* the restaurant. (wry grin) The prices are also high -- my husband and I dropped around $100 on dinner for two, and we don't drink or order stuff with lobster in it. If you're visiting and staying at the Peppermill or have a jones for Chinese food, you'll probably enjoy Chi's. Otherwise, there are better choices for Chinese food in Reno. read more

The service was amazing, the bartender was extremely sweet and the portions were enormous. Two people could easily split an entree. On the downside the food was merely subpar, you can tell nothing is fresh and the awful fruit decorations on the appetizers are unappealing. You would get better quality and more authentic food at a typical chinese take-out. I had the Crab Rangoon and Kung Pao chicken. I'm giving 5 stars based on service. Our server was so gracious, handling like 10 tables seamlessly. I really liked his style it was so casual. I could truly tell he was a professional, serving was second nature to him. I almost wish I had service like this everywhere I went but then what on gods green earth would I Yelp about? I feel like the food was good not so much outstanding but I could've possibly not ordered the best things. Taos chicken and Szechuan shrimp that was marked as spicy but lacked every bit of spicy. Thankfully the crab rangoons came with a sauce and so did the wings and egg rolls. I liked the spice sprinkled on the wings and the way that they fried them I just don't think it was that fresh of a wing. I'm giving 3.5 for the food and I think that the customer service was so good I'm still giving 5 stars despite me having a reservation and having to wait an additional 20 min because they were running a little late. What appeared to be the manager of the place came and wished everyone a merry xmas and asked how every table was doing I found that pleasurable. This was an overall good experience but I would've like my sautéed shrimp to be a little more warmer but that's not taking away from the fact that the food was still good. I would recommend this place if you're looking to impress a date they have a special for $50 a few apps a choice of white or brown rice going with 2 entrees. It's a pretty decent deal it also included a scoop of ice cream and a cookie both made in house. Was looking forward to trying this place out....looks very nice from outside. Well, they get 5 stars for looks, and 1 for taste, so I guess that kinda averages out to my score.......... Food is quite terrible if you are from anywhere where you've actually had "authentic" Chinese food! (Seattle for us) . As seems to be the pattern in the peppermill , servings are giant ( which generally translates into GROSS tasting) , and while our waitress TRIED to be friendly, the service actually sucked. No tea was offered, and when I asked for it , they stuck one tea bag in a pot (weak tea- zero flavor) and brought only ONE cup....there were 2 of us at the table! Water glasses were not filled in a timely manner. We ordered spare ribs for an appetizer, but they brought out these nasty HUGE BBQ back ribs that were a god awful fake RED color. The "cup" of hot and sour soup was a HUGE bowl of nasty tasting soup. I barely touched it. The fried rice , chow fun and Mongolian beef were palatable but NOT delicious. Eat at your own risk. The absolute worse Chinese food I have ever eaten in my life! There was 16 of us and not one person liked their food. Nearly every main dish was left completely full. The Texture of the meats were so disgusting, even put teenage boys who basically eat garbage, would not eat the food. When 16 people order and your food comes out in 10 minutes, that should have been our first clue. Everything must be pre-made and kept in warmers or something... We were looking forward to coming to Reno to enjoy some fine dining, ate at Chi's and were throughly disappointed!!! If you can't prepare the food they should take it off their menu. Both my wife's and my meals were almost inedible, they were like chewing on rubber which is common with the Abalone because it's not prepared correctly but even the Lobster was rubbery and impossible to remove from the shell. Chi says its voted Reno's best, if that's the case I won't be back to Reno. For $180 I could eat better at Panda Express. read more

Ambience was good but not the service. We asked before sitting about food options for vegetarian and we were told they will customize everything like we want. We are strict vegetarians and gave instructions to have no fish, no meat but they gave sweetcorn soup with chicken. My parents were completely thrown off and it's such a big thing which was treated like whatever. No apology was given nor the service was good. The server was instead very rude. My mom didnt eat at all and it just ruined the entire evening. I wish people would have sense of consideration and respect for other cultures and traditional values. A friend and I had the opportunity to dine at Chi the other night and I came away disappointed at best. Now, to be fair, we only tried a couple dishes but if these were any indication of the rest of the menu, save your time and money. It isn't worth it at all. The quality of the meat in the Mongolian Beef dish was more of what I might expect from the King Buffet on Kietzke Lane. It was an inexpensive cut of meat, very fatty and chewy. Food is average. I had the Sauteed Prawns with Spicy Szechuan Sauce and my husband had the Sweet and Sour Pork Tenderloin. They were okay. We had the vegetable egg rolls as part of the appetizers and they were horrible-mushy and no flavor. My hubby thought the Crab Rangoon was okay, however, I didn't think it was that great. I thought the chix wings were passable but the hubs (who considers himself a chix wing connoisseur) didn't like them at all. Prices are high. ($25 each for Chi Dinner which isn't worth the cost.) Service was terrible. Our waitress was named Wen. It should have been "When" as in when will she be come back! Busboy and hostess did more work on our table then she did and it appeared she only had three tables! In addition, it was our anniversary which they had marked on our reservation (I saw the note when we checked-in). Yet, they did nothing. When I asked the hostess about it after our meal she ran back and got a ginger mouse dessert (which we didn't like) with a candle but it was too little too late. I asked for a Corona and a menu - Corona arrived 7ish minutes later and was nearly done before I got a menu. In the meantime, said bartender was bitching at her co-workers and was very unhappy. It MUST get busier in there. Food: Shrimp fried rice - well lets just say I was happy I had a comfortable room to feel like shit in after eating. The bay shrimp were a bit "fishy" so it's my own damn fault for eating them. The rice was bland and it took a ton of chili sauce, soy sauce, salt and pepper to choke down. Went here for the first time. My husband ordered the sweet and sour pork, I ordered the spicy peanut sauce chicken and an order of the crispy spring veggie rolls. The veggie rolls were delicious although $10 for three tiny little rolls was a little pricy. My husband loved the sweet and sour pork. My dish on the other hand was disappointing. Chicken was rubbery and tasteless, the spicy peanut sauce was so thin and honestly gross. No spice or peanut sauce taste to it at all. It was like soup with chicken. I ate rice and picked out the veggies. The entire plate wasn't touched. The server asked how things were and I said it wasn't good. I got a nod and a thank you very much? Went to dinner with a friend last weekend and it was very good. We were seated quickly even though it was pretty busy inside. Our server ( I think her name was Lilly) was phenomenal! She was very fast, and very friendly. When we recieved our meal, the food was hot and very fresh. I had some very tasty generals chicken and she had the sweet and sour pork. Our server brought us steamed white and brown rice so we could try both. The warm almond scented towels are a nice touch before dessert. They make fresh tiny almond cookies that are crunchy and fantastic to end the meal we had. I've been here many times and have never had a bad experience! read more

Had dinner here tonight. My advice, don't make the same mistake. For starters, you have to go through all of the smoke in the casino to get there. The place looks very much like a San Francisco bordello of the late 1800s. We started with the potstickers. There's no way to know when they were made but they were quite rubbery. We also ordered the chicken in garlic sauce and the Peking pork loin. Neither of these dishes were good. The pork was breaded and fried and very thick and chewy. The chicken in garlic was just plain terrible. You can plan to spend $4-$5 more per entree here than you would at any other Chinese restaurant. Do yourself a favor and find another place to eat Chinese food. read more

On a recent visit to Reno, we decided to try this restaurant out. We were not disappointed! The food and service were very good! Lois was even very impressed with the decor, she loved the furniture and other accent decorations. We were seated immediately and taken to a nice booth. Water came quickly and the waitress checked in with us without being intrusive - she was attentive to our needs without interrupting constantly. We had several dishes, including the roast duck, steamed fish fillet with ginger and scallions, and braised mushrooms with bok choy. The roast duck was very good. Steamed fish is a simple dish but I always look forward to it and it didn't disappoint. Even the mushrooms and bok choy were satisfying - I don't mind vegies, but they don't usually give me a sense of fulfillment. Overall, we really enjoyed ourselves. We did go at a slow time of year and on a weeknight, so that may have made the service better than usual. Still, the waitress was very polite and helpful - definitely nothing for us to complain about. If we stay at Peppermill again, we'll certainly come back here! read more

Our experience here on Christmas was totally different from that of another person who was apparently there on the same day. Everything about it was very, very good. As a group of 4, we ordered the chicken corn chowder soup; whole steamed fish (sole); boneless braised duck with pork, chicken and shrimp; sautéed shrimp in XO sauce; Szechwan eggplant; and white and brown rice to augment the main courses. Everything we ordered was very good (and we tend to be picky about Chinese food), and was not Americanized. Total cost with tax and an 18% tip was $24 per person - quite reasonable for a meal of this caliber. We only had hot tea and water for drinks. Is this San Francisco? Of course not. But the experience was still very good for Chinese food in Reno, with exceptional service and a pleasant environment. We've tried just about every other Chinese restaurant in the area, and overall, this is the best meal we've had. If you want something better, go over the hill to Golden Dragon in Rocklin (ask for the special menu), or to New Canton in Sacramento for dim sum, or all the way to the Bay Area for the best Chinese food. If you want really good, and cheap, potstickers, go to Chinese Duck House across the street (though we don't like anything else there). But this was pretty darn good, and we'll go back again since it's a hell of a lot closer than driving over the mountain. The manager stopped by to ask us about our meal, and we asked about the whole lobster. He tells me that they do a 2 pound Maine lobster for $40 ($20 less than Oceano charges for the same thing), so my wife is already making plans to visit again around Chinese New Year. read more

I'm not much of a gambler, so its just as big a surprise to me that I found myself in Reno for my birthday/holiday weekend. Never one to say NO to an adventure (People who say YES have more fun!), I happily checked into the Peppermill Casino-Resort-Spa and after reading Yelp reviews, simply had to try out Chi. Calling down the day of, we had no problems getting reservations at 8 pm on a Friday night. We arrive at our appointed time, greeted & seated immediately. One glance around and you can see the ambiance my fellow Yelpers have described: upscale, elegant Chinese decor surrounds you, with beautiful crystal chandeliers hanging above each table - sending out scattered, diffuse light. If I were on a date I would love the low, complimentary lighting in this place - but alas, I was having a lovely dinner with family. Our glasses were immediately filled with water, after first being given the option of still or sparkling, bottled or tap. Next, our delightful server Lily arrived with compliments to all of the ladies at the table on their beauty and assuring us we were to take our time and enjoy our dining experience. Intrigued by their specialty cocktails, I tried to the Ginger-Lemongrass Cooler - a vodka, simple syrup topped with ginger beer and slices of fresh ginger. It was light & refreshing - a perfect summer cocktail. After happily "cocktailing" for a bit, we moved on to the appetizers - choosing the appetizer combo plate to sample a little bit of everything. It arrived seemingly minutes later, with steamed pork pot stickers, cream cheese crab puffs, BBQ sweet ribs, fried spring rolls and a curious fried spring roll with a whole shrimp inside. Every bite was delicious - the pot stickers being my favorite. They were perfectly steamed, with just a hint of crust where they were flash fried for a few seconds before plating. The pork was sweet and flavorful, hardly needing any dumpling sauce because it was so tender and juicy. Next came the BBQ sweet ribs - a bit awkward at first, I'm not usually one who enjoys eating with her hands in a nice restaurant, but then Lily appeared with hot, almond-scented towels to clean our hands. Her timing and service was this impeccable all evening. Messy, but tasty, shortribs devoured, I decided to try the fried-spring-roll-with-a-shrimp-tail-sticking-out. It wasn't anything I recognized, but the blend of vegetables wrapped around the shrimp, then covered in a phyllo and fried golden brown were excellent, especially paired with the spicy mustard. The fried spring roll was as expected, possibly a low note to end on, but I attribute that more to my adoration for the other items rather than its lackluster performance. After enjoying our appetizer selections, we decided to share the Peking Duck and Chicken & Shrimp Pad Thai among the table. None of us were famished after our yummy starters, so we thought this would be a good option to try a few different things. Boy, the portions are so large we probably could have just ordered one! Again, minutes after ordering our selections arrived - their kitchen is either psychic or wonderfully efficient. Our pad Thai arrived in a presentation similar to a Cobb salad - each layer of toppings was beautifully displayed in rows atop the traditional flat noodles in tangy peanut sauce. I deftly mixed the peanuts, sprouts, generous fried egg, shrimp and chicken into the pasta while Lily began preparing the Peking Duck. Arriving sliced and laid out on a platter, the large pieces of duck are beautifully glazed with a crispy outer crust. Borrowing a pair of chopsticks from the table, she expertly unfolds the "pancakes" (for those unfamiliar, they are more like crepes than fluffy buttermilk pancakes), slathers on a bit of the spicy, sweet Peking sauce and then adds vegetables and slices of duck, folding each back up like a lovely little Peking duck burrito and placing them on our plates. The whole presentation was fascinating and fun - with Lily explaining each step with her lovely accent, comparing this to how her family makes the dish at home. Each bite was just as delicious - the sweet but tangy sauce, the light crepe-like pancake and the slightly crunchy crust on the juicy duck, all blended into a wonderful meal. And don't forget the pad Thai! It was perfectly spicy, peanut-y and delicious, with large chucks of white meat chicken and shrimp, all beautifully blended with the flat noodles and fried egg. We simply couldn't finish each tasty morsel, so Lily graciously boxed up the leftovers for a late night snack after some gambling... Now, you might ask: How does it get any better? Well, here's how: some members of our table qualified for the very prestigious (ahem) over-55 discount of 10%, but our sweet Lily discounted the entire bill 10% - a lovely surprise ending to a scrumptious meal. This was our first time eating here. In the past we always just walked by, looked at the menu and said "eh" Big mistake!! We should have been eating here all the time!!! The lighting is dim and cozy. Decor is nice. Service is impeccable even though we did wait a little long for our food. We ordered fried calamari with spicy salt appetizer. The calamari was lightly breaded and not greasy, but the salt was not spicy whatsoever, just salty!! The beef chow fun with black bean sauce was delicious but being a noodle junky I could tell the noodles were dry packaged noodle and not fresh wide rice noodles. Hubby got triple delight with chicken, pork, and scallops that were humongous!!!! And it and came with rice! Word of advice: order drinks an an appetizer and entree to share and it will be more than enough! Especially if you're staying in the hotel and have no way to store and reheat leftovers! I am very picky when it comes to Chinese food. Growing up in Taiwan, I was spoiled by authentic, delicious Chinese food. Originally I was hesitant about trying out this place due to the reviews. But, after reading the menu, I changed my mind and gave it a try. The food was amazing and our waitress Grace was friendly and she suggested the steamed fish filets that was awesome! They even comprised my husband's vegan diet, very thoughtful. I strongly recommend this place. read more
