Edit 5/31/18 : After some thought, I've decided to change the number of stars to 3 instead of 2. I still stand by my review and I'm not changing a word of it below; however, I don't think the overall experience deserves 2 stars. Perhaps 2.5, but not 2, so I will round up to 3. If this restaurant didn't profess to be 'fine dining', I would easily give it 3-4 stars, but as I stated before, it was not a 'fine dining' experience, and that was my expectation. I still won't return, nor do I recommend it for those looking to have a fine dining experience, but I think 3 stars is a more fair rating.

We decided to try Chi because both of the other fine dining options at the Peppermill were booked and Chi was very open as far as reservations went. Perhaps that should have been our first clue, but I have had such a good experience with another Peppermill fine dining restaurant in Reno that I thought this would at least be comparable.
The short note on this review is that the food is alright, the ambiance is nice, but the service was.... less than desirable--especially for what we were paying for.
The following was our experience:
We arrived a little early, so we sat at the bar to wait until we could be seated. Since we sat at the bar, the bartender came over and asked if we were waiting for a table, to which we said 'yes'. She said 'okay' and then promptly left without asking if we were interested in ordering a drink from her (which we were), but we just let it go.
Once the hostesses (who were friendly) started seating people. the manager on duty (I assume) approached another lady near us at the bar and let her know she could be seated at any time. We did not receive the same courtesy. Again, we ignored it. Not a big deal. We simply got up and asked the hostesses about being seated since it was becoming apparent they weren't going to approach us even though they knew we were waiting.
We were greeted promptly by the service staff, which is great. We ordered drinks and an appetizer to start out with. The appetizer came very quickly but we waited a long time for our drinks. Now, when I eat at a place that professes to be even somewhat along the lines of fine dining. I expect a bit of decorum to be observed. Bring out drinks, then bring out appetizer, not bring out drinks long after the appetizer is gone.
We ordered soup, which again came out promptly, but then dinner came out very quickly after and I was still eating my soup. My dining companion ordered another drink, which she waited quite a while for. During that time we were asked if we wanted a box, then again when the drink came. At that point we were tired of feeling rushed through what should have been a leisurely paced meal, so we got boxes to go, specifically stating not to box up the rice, which got boxed up anyway, which left us with the impression that not only were they trying to get rid of us, but they weren't really listening to anything we had to say.
I had wanted to get another drink, and we were considering dessert. Possibly we would have ordered another round of drinks after that as well. If I had wanted an hurried, in and out experience, I would have gone to a mid-priced chain restaurant. My dining companion said they felt uncomfortable by the way the staff seemed to hover close by, and was relieved to leave.
The food was good; above average for this kind of food, I would say, and the decor was nice. The staff was friendly enough, but honestly my experience was not good. The restaurant was mostly empty and, like I said earlier, they were pretty open for reservations, so it wasn't as if they needed our table. It really comes down to that we felt very under valued and unwelcome. For the prices charged, and the fact that this is supposed to be "fine dining", we should not have been hurried through our experience the way that we were.
I don't give two star ratings very often, and to give Chi two stars really reflects just how dissatisfying our dining experience really was.
To anyone considering this restaurant, I would say, don't actually expect a fine dining experience. The food is good, but you can probably get comparable food for less money elsewhere, where you feel a little more valued. Of course, if your main focus is good food fast, and you're staying at the Peppermill, then this might be the place for you. It really just depends on what you value in your dining experiences. read more
