We were here for Chinese New Year. Hot and Sour soup was really good. All prawn dishes we got had big prawns. Sauté spicy green beans were great ! The only thing I didn't care for was the Mongolian beef. It definitely has Chinese five spice in it and I hate the licorice flavor of it , so I'm really sensitive to it. Drinks were good too. They just changed the names of the drinks but it is the peach one with vodka. That one was great. We had a quirky wonderful server. A little on the pricey side but not outrageous. We had 4 people but ordered a ton ! 2 apps , soup, 3 dishes plus 2 dishes off of the special chines new year menu and it was about $245 ( the special menu was more pricey then regular ) Beautiful table set up! I didn't expect to be so impressed with this place. While the Peppermill has also been a solid choice for great restaurants, Chinese fare in Reno is often hit or miss, generally leaning to the sugar laden western palate. We were fortunate to dine here as the Chinese New Years specials were first out on the menu. Aside from the food the service was amazing. We began with cocktails, staring with the Asian Mule which was good but nothing spectacular. Our appetizers included the Hot and Sour soup, which was flavorful and not overly hot to the point where your taste buds just give up, as I've experienced in many Asian restaurants in the area. We also had the pot stickers and calamari. The potstickers were delicious, served with a salty umami sauce. The calamari was ok, served with a trio of basic sauces that reminded us of deconstructed "Chang" sauce. I would recommend both, but they're pretty nondescript. For the entrees we mainly ordered off the specials menu. As wonderful as these were the true star of the meal was the spicy green beans. They are served perfectly al dente in a salty sauce with the perfect amount of garlic. We didn't order any of the specials for dessert as the Peppermill has a great selection of sorbet and gelato so we stuck to the classics. Over all I'd highly recommend this restaurant for both the food as service, as well as the atmosphere. A friend and I went to Chi looking for something different. We were greeted by a nice gentleman who got us seated right away. The restaurant itself was absolutely beautiful and elegant. Our Server Linda was very friendly and very informative since this was our first time here. Every time we got a refresher of our drink they brought out a brand new glass each time which was nice. We ordered the Chi dinner which started off with an appetizer platter that had chicken wings, egg rolls, and crab ragoons. The chicken wings were amazing and nothing like I have had before. The batter was sweet and so crispy! We got an order of Lemon chicken and Sweet and sour chicken. It was all white meat and the juiciest piece of white meat I have ever had! The pieces were large so we both got full rather quickly. We then got some of their Green Teal Gelato which came with the meal. That was amazing as well. My family and I were craving Chinese food. This restaurant is in its own Chinese world inside the Peppermill. From the inside, you cannot hear or see the casino life. The decor is outstanding. The table cloths and walls are coated in red. Fancy lights and plants surround your table. This brought us into a relaxing dining experience. We ordered the appetizer plate which was $19.50. This price was outrageous for the lackluster amount and flavor. The plate does not mention the amount they are giving you on the menu. This is deceiving because it implies many appetizers are on the plate. The wings had a unique blend of spices which made it delicious. Unfortunately. everything else was disappointing. The spring rolls and crab rangoons tasted no different to ones I would order from a fast food Chinese place. I was extremely dissatisfied from the jumbo shrimp. It was so rubbery. Definitely skip the shrimp. For the entrees, we ordered the pan-fried noodles. This dish had plenty of shrimp and fish. I thought it was a little too salty but it was overall good. The cashew chick was yummy. The mushroom and bok choy dish were also tasty. All the entrees were solid, but nothing special. At the end of the dining experience, we were provided warm wet towels that smelt faintly of almond. We were also given cute almond cookies. The overall dining experience was good. What we ordered: - peking duck: fine, but don't make the mistake that I made and expect legit peking duck...this was like regular roast duck without the dark and crispy skin, quite disappointing. They did give option of skin vs bun, which is great. - beef and vegetables: beef was really tender and portion was quite generous! - fish filet and vegetables: my favorite dish, fish was perfectly tender and vegetables were very complementary! They also have shui zhu yu (Szechuan spicy boiled fish dish; so this restaurant is pretty authentic!!), but they weren't able to accommodate less spice so we skipped that. read more

I have now been a few more times here since my original review and they have improved tremendously. Always been seated right away. Service is very good. Their pork fried rice rivals my own and that is saying a lot although my husband still thinks mine is better :) But everything is quite tasty. Food comes very quick. It is so quick that we were able to order 3 entrees to share and got out of there within 35 mins!!! Very nice when you are in a hurry or starving. I ordered the War won ton soup to go so I could take it back to my room since hubs was not hungry. I made the order with the hostess and she said I could pick it up at the bar in 15-20 mins. I came back within that time and my order was ready. I did have to wait a little bit for the bartender to be done making drinks for the server but she was super nice. I brought it back to my room and thought they gave me too much but what they did was separate the ingredients from the broth. I thought that was a nice touch because it kept the ingredients fresh and you also get your moneys worth. Kind of like asking for no ice in a drink. It was delicious by the way. Everything I have tried has been really good there. Only downside I will say is that it can be pricey if you want variety as it is family style. I remembered the crab and walnut prawns being good. Green beans and salt and pepper fish are my usual at every chinese restaurant. One dish I would like to see improvement on is the Peking duck. Someone in my party always wants to order that and I am disappointed every time. The way it is cut isn't right. It isn't supposed to be sliced like turkey. The glistening skin is very important! Our fried rice was forgotten and when it can it was obviously rushed and had no flavor. Our Entrees: Abalone and Sea cucumber medallions. The abalone was over cooked and hard to cut with a knife. The sea cucumber was ok. The dish lacked flavor and texture. For 128.00 I expected a finely cooked dish. Braised Duck with shrimp, pork and chicken. The duck was very low quality. The dish barley had flavor beyond the extremely bad duck flavor. I hunt duck, cook duck and this terrible duck. We left the whole dish and didn't take it with us. Couldn't understand what flavor the sauce was. Who puts snow peas in Shredded Pork with Spicy Garlic Sauce? This dish was floating in sauce which doesn't taste anything like authentic Chinese spicy garlic sauce. Pot of tea ordered was not even hot and they use tea bags instead of tea leaves. My husband kidnapped me and took me to the Peppermill for two days as a surprise for our anniversary. I had no idea, so didn't have time to prepare or think of what I wanted to eat. This was my choice, and definitely not a mistake! We went there on the second night of our stay, and I have to say, the food and service were excellent! I had the pork belly with tofu, and if that doesn't sound appetizing, you can order it without tofu. I did that. It also had shrimp and oysters and vegetables, and it was not only aromatic, but really good! Our server, Hana, was really sweet! My husband told them that it was our second day staying at the Peppermill for our anniversary when we sat down, and they brought us a huge piece of coconut cake! I normally finish anything coconut, but I could not finish that, as much as I really wanted too, and as hard as I tried! People, please understand that this is a place of fine dining, and hats inside and dressing super casual is just not OK! This isn't a problem with the restaurant, but the people who ate there. I hate dressing up, and that even bothered me. If you forget your dressy clothes, there are great Italian men's and women's boutiques at the Peppermill! When we got there, most people were dressed nicely, except one person who was sitting with his hat on, which isn't OK endures anyway. After we got there, a bunch of noisy conventioneers showed up, and they did not dress as if they were eating in a fine dining establishment. The food and service was superb. We were taken cared by Thomas from San Francisco, what a fine gentleman, he was so helpful, nice, and patient. So as the other staff that were helping him bring food and cleared the table of the extras. We were in for a low key bday dinner for a friend. We ordered lots of food and everything was served in such a timely manner. The portions of the food were very generous, we all had leftovers. My favorite of all dishes was probably the hot and sour soup and the roasted duck! Yo, you need to try it. I really like the spinning round table set up because it allowed our group of six to easily taste all the food without the hassle of passing plates around. The ambience was nice and elegant, not bright with the light dim sum. And Thomas over heard it was a bday dinner and brought out a slice of cake at the end of dinner for the bday girl, on the house. What a great Asian Restaurant located inside Peppermill Casino. Traveling from out of town and was invited to this Asian Restaurant for a supplier dinner. The ambiance was great. This place was authentically decorated to look like the Ming Dynasty era. The ambiance was good with moderate noise levels. We could actually hear ourselves speak at the table. The wait staff was super slow and not very attentive. It could have been due to how busy they were during the time of the visit. The wait staff had to be flagged down and they were not very friendly. The food was amazing. From the appetizers to the six course meal that ordered. We were served an appetizer platter which consisted of wings, wonton, egg rolls, Rangoon's. The courses that followed was full of flavors and nicely prepared. From fried and sliced pork chops, to general tsos chicken, to bok Choi, to honey walnut with shrimp prawn delight, to the beef with broccoli, and the combination fried rice. All the dishes were the right portion and with the best flavors prepared. It was one of the best meals I had this week. The food was packed with amazing authentic but no high in sodium content. Moderate to mild flavors with fresh and delightful ingredients. They did however also have a variety of beers and cocktails to select from if you could locate the servers. Overall location was great, the food was delightful, and the ambiance was energetic. A good location for an intimate dining experience or a family dining experience. We were given a Chinese New Year's voucher from Peppermill to eat here so we had to check it out :) Located in the center of the casino, Chi itself is beautiful from the large crystal dragon at the reception desk to the dark interior and LED back lighting inside, this place screamed upscale Chinese. When we checked in our hostess couldn't find my reservation as they had written them down on index cards and placed them on their counter. She then checked the computer and found our reservation and made a remark to herself that sometimes "late" reservations aren't put on the counter. Wrong thing to say to me, since I made my reservation well over a month ago! We had $75 to spend so we ordered the Chi dinner at $25 pp The Chi dinner included appetizers, two entrees, white or brown rice and gelato for desert. We added an order of honey walnut prawns for another $19 as well. The appetizers consisted of spring rolls (2), salt and pepper chicken wings(4) and crab cheese wonton(2). Only the crab cheese wonton were worthy of commenting on they were crispy with a good blend of cream cheese and real crab. Entrees: Mongolian Beef: At first the sauce on the beef seemed a little overpowering but when it was eaten in combination with rice it was actually quite good. There was a good portion of tender beef, onions and crispy rice vermicelli. Szechuan Spicy Shrimp: Large prawns with snow peas served in a NOT spicy at all sauce-Blah. Honey Walnut Prawns: Large prawns deep fried served with candied walnuts and honeydew melon cubes all blended together in a sweet mayo sauce. This was the best entree. House Gelato: Coconut was very mild in flavor. Mango was POW full of mouth puckering flavor LOL. I think the chef was drunk when they made the mango gelato as it was super strong in flavor. The hostess was very friendly and the ambiance was excellent. Our server was Hannah and she was attentive, informative, and great. I had the cucumber and melon fizz cocktail which came in a fancy cocktail glass - loved it. The soups - cup size is closer to bowl - were superb as we had a hot and sour and an egg flower. We had moo shu pancakes which were tasty and the biggest pancakes I've ever seen 2 large ones each which would have been enough for 4 people. in a nice touch, Hanna rolled them for us. Entrees we shared were chicken in spicy peanut sauce and Mongolian beef. We enjoyed the chicken and though the beef was very tender, it wasn't very flavorful and has a ton of onions. Portions were huge. We will certainly come back, try different things and reduce how much we order! read more

Kung Pao: tough stringy 'woody' chicken, a few pieces of tiny celery and onion, raw peanuts, undercooked unripe peppers with a small puddle of watery, flavorless mild sauce. No chilis. The Mongolian Beef did not resemble beef and also flavorless. If you really want to enjoy the atmosphere, then maybe order only appetizers or desserts and drinks. It is embarrassingly bad food. When the manager came to our table, he was very pleasant with a quick rehearsed speech and then he zoomed off like he didn't want to hear how bad our reactions are which my eyes showed. She moved, fast, efficiently and with a big smile on her face. She was personable, responsive and quick to make sure that we had everything we needed. We would go back just because of her. The food was mediocre. We had seafood wontons (the shell was very good, crispy, light and not greasy at all), dumplings (so-so), sweet and sour soup (so-so) and ribs. Service - 5/5 Spring rolls - 5/5. Came with 3 different sauces. Only complaint is the order only comes with 3 rolls and my boyfriend and I had to split the last one. Spicy tofu - 5/5. Perfect crunchy texture with a flavorful 5 spice powder. Chicken in spicy peanut sauce - 3/5. I didn't try any of the meat dishes. My boyfriend liked the flavor but the texture of some of the chicken was unpleasant. He really liked the chunks of pineapple in the dish. He says the dish didn't have enough of the peanut sauce. Walnut prawns - 3/5. The prawns were huge! Although I would've loved this dish I think (didn't try it because I don't eat meat anymore), my boyfriend says the prawns were too big in his opinion. I really liked that the custard was not overly sweet. Very light and satisfying. Young Coconut Cake - 3/5. I thought that the cake would be coconut flavored. This is actually a pineapple cake with a coconut frosting. I didn't care for the chunks of pineapple in the cake. The cake was nice and moist and the coconut ice cream on the side was delicious. So where do I start. This place should get ten stars. Five for customer service and five for the food. The food was not the typical Chinese food. The shrimp fried rice had nice size shrimps and not the small ones in typical Chinese food. The chow mein was full of great veggies. Now I am not a veggie kind of guy, but the veggies they used were perfect. The orange chicken was also good. I almost forgot about the fried calamari. Yumville, USA. Perfectly fried and not soggy. I wish I could have tried everything on the menu. This place did not disappoint. My son would not stop talking about how good the food was. A++++.
