We had a great meal at Chez Rene. It is a classic bistro with all the food, decor, and service you'd expect in Paris. The waiter was a little pushy in a French way but it's fine if you have an idea of what you want. It's better if you take any perceived attitude in stride as part of the experience. We got the escargot, pot-au-feu, and boeuf bourgninon. The two main dishes were specials off the menu and we knew they were known for them so we got them. Both came in very big portions which was nice. The escargot were big and super flavorful with the green sauce. We got 6 of them but could've easily eaten more. Sauce was very addicting. The boeuf bourgninon was very rich and savory. It really hit the spot and they serve it in a plate with the rest of it in a pot. The pot-au-feu was outstanding. A stewed beef soup that is definitely on the lighter side but the beef quality was very good and super tender. There were lots of different cuts of beef like tongue and marrow. For dessert, we got the 'floating island' rich was pretty unique. It was like a meringue on top of a cream sauce with pomegranate candy and almonds. It was also huge and pretty tasty but wouldn't say it was my favorite thing. Definitely worth trying though. All in all a great classic Paris bistro experience. read more

The beef Bourguignon was the clear standout--deeply flavorful, beautifully cooked, and exactly what you'd hope for in a traditional French dish. Just a heads-up that still water is charged, which is good to know going in if you're watching the extras. After watching dozens of "The Frenchies" YouTube video reviews prior to our France trip, I selected Chez René, a classic bistro in the Latin Quarter, for our first dinner in Paris. Me, my wife and daughter toasted our first night in Paris with kir royales, which went very well with my delicious appetizer of leeks in vinaigrette sauce. All three of us ordered the boeuf Bourguignon, and it was as classic and warming as we'd hoped. Our wonderful dinner also included bread with a cream sauce with onions, garlic and chives; profiteroles for my wife; and an Île flottante merengue dessert for my daughter. Service was excellent and friendly; we had no issues even though our waiter spoke almost no English. He brought me the perfect glass of red when I asked for wine that went with the beef. Chez René was the highlight of our 10 day Paris vacation in regards to a culinary experience. Whether it was the Cod, Beef Bourguignion, bread and garlic dip, or the Tomato and Goat Cheese to after dinner shots and espresso, the food was an 11 out of 10. My fiancé and I went to Chez René per the recommendation of a foodie YouTube video. Chez René was bigger than the usual French restaurant, so it looked like we would've been fine with a walk-in. I made a reservation anyway just to be safe. Service was the best I've experienced at a sit-down restaurant. Our server was so efficient, and he was very attentive. The food was great. As traditional French food as it gets. For starters, we got the eggs mayonnaise and salad museau. Eggs with mayonnaise have quickly become my favorite starter on my trip. I should've googled what museau was before I had it. I realized that it was an entire dish of chopped pig snout. I didn't try it, but I'm told by my fiancé that the vinaigrette was great but with an acquired texture. I got the onglet boeuf, and my fiancé got the beef bourguignon. Both beef dishes were excellent. Mine was a steak with an onion sauce that was so flavorful. He was gracious despite our not knowing French, and made wonderful recommendations - sole munier and beef bourguignon that were everything we had dreamed of and more. I sent friends here just this week. It was a very special birthday for one of them. Her 80th! They were treated very poorly by a surly, rude waiter. He actually walked away from their table until our Parisian friends walked in and joined their party. He then argued with them about their of wine, not suggested mind you, said no he would not white wine and brought a red. They said the beef was so tough they did not eat. Those who had fish said it was lovely. This is to say I will think twice before I ever recommend Chez René again. I will not be back and I have been every time I visit Paris. Which is often. We were so excited to enjoy this restaurant, however the minute we entered we were treated very poorly. We had a reservation and were treated like a burden to the restaurant. We asked for an allergen or gluten free menu or options as someone in our party has an extreme allergy and we were told no " only French" ... we even asked in French however the waiter misunderstood our question thinking we were asking for an English menu. Our table also continued to be pushed by the waiter repeatedly into the wall giving us no space. One of the members of our party even was continuously being bumped into by the waiter even though there was plenty of space. The place was small as most of them are in Paris, but looks very classic too. The places I have visited along the touristy spots are no where to compare to this place the food here is the real French food. This place is a must see if you are in Paris. The only thing I dislike is the menu only comes in French however the servers are kind enough to assist. My friend and I had dinner here a couple of weeks ago (weren't able to get a table outside). We ordered the tartare de tomates au chevre frais to start. My friend loved it. I thought it was justy okay (not a fan of the chevre to tomato ratio - too much chevre for the amount of tomatoes). For the main course, she had the Supreme de volaille de Landes (chicken) with fries. She loved the chicken. I tasted the fries, and they were good. I had the Boeuf Bourgignon. So, I was tempted to reduce a star because they have NO fans qon a 101 degree day. BUT, the server went above and beyond with the ice, the wine and overall service I HAD to give 5 stars. Really a good address to keep in mind for your next dinner with wife or friends, though probably best to keep it small as it's not a huge place. I wanted this FTR more than anything! Oh well. Chez Rene is awesome! And they make two of my favorite dishes better than anywhere I have ever been. The boeuf bourguignon and the coq au vin are simply amazing. Both are served in your own personal cast iron pot and what's inside is truly magical. The sauce for each is complex and there is no question that they use a top quality red wine that helps bring together all the flavors of each dish. The only downer is deciding which of these dishes to choose. The service is warm and gracious and the setting is what you would expect from a classic Parisian restaurant. read more

Then had the best duck confit on the left bank- the order includes 2 whole legs plus the side of your choice- I got spinach which came simply sautéed. My husband had boeuf bourguignon- a huge casserole with potatoes. For dessert we had the chocolate mousse- chilled and delicious. Best meal for Classic French. My dinner was a little better than what I would get on the airline. Cold chicken (mostly wing), some average turkey, ham (the ham was very good), and some beef. I guess they thought a giant side of mayo would somehow help the flavor. Service was terrible, only one person working the outside and he could only manage one function at a time. I wanted to order roasted chicken, but he turned me away toward the "meat plate". Shouldn't have taken his advice as I could have got cold cuts with a side of mayo anywhere. I went here for a lunch before work to escape the heat. The little things stood out: a cold carafe d'eau with ice cubes on the side (more than you'll get from the lukewarm plumbing systems of most Parisian restaurants), very friendly and attentive service (Daniel), perfectly cooked buttery string beans, fresh fruit, warm bread. But for 39€, my meal was overpriced. The appetizer was delicious, but it was also not more than sliced melon. The dessert, though also delicious, was at 11€ more expensive than most quality bistro desserts and was much less inspired (raspberries with cream and sugar in the side). Warm service if you're willing to pay. But for less money and more inspired cooking in the 5ème head to Cafe de la Nouvelle Mairie. And for a lunch at less than half the price with superior inspiration and equal humility get the 18€ formule at Bistro Paul Bert in the 11ème. read more
