There's one specific dish that I wanted to try while in Paris - cassoulet. Yelp led me here to Chez Gladines, and as my fiance and I walked up we knew it was a good place because it was super busy and there was a large group waiting outside to get in. Protip: even if you see a group outside, go in and put your name on the list. Since there were only two of us we got seated before the large group we saw. Inside was pretty snug, as most Parisian places are, but overall it's a really nice casual place.. My fiance got the foie gras omelette, which was predictably super rich. My cassoulet arrived and it was quite a beauty. A large soupy dish filled with white beans, sausage, a chicken leg and a strip of salty savory pork belly. Between that and the bottle of red wine, I was dreading the long walk back home, but it was definitely worth it. As with most places in Paris the service is spotty, and the wait can be pretty long (both to get in and for the food), but we were both super satisfied with our meal and sometimes you can strike up a conversation with your table-mates like we did. If you're cassoulet hunting in Paris, I definitely recommend here. read more

My medium-well steak was RARE. Like basically raw in places. But it was tasty in the places that I dared to eat. The potatoes were well-seasoned and crispy and to die for. Really good. Also, don't pass up the cheese plate -- best part of the meal. Service was slow and totally inattentive, but the food was decent. Not a bad walk from Notre Dame and several other areas along the Seine. Depending on what you're in the mood for, it could go either way, but the range of selection is pretty wide so I'd say it's a safe bet. read more

We were here on a Saturday night and it was really crowded, but they were efficient moving people in and out. The waiters were not annoyed at my terrible French and spoke English well (I tried some French but they spoke English to me which was very much appreciated:) ) We sat outside and enjoyed the street side atmosphere. The restaurant has a energetic vibe that almost borders being gritty at times but still had a sophisticated yet fun feel. When busy walk up and leave your name and then stand along side the curb until its your turn. We had fromage (cheese) and bordeaux wine with bread as an appetizer. For the meal we had omelette Cepes, patate jamon pays (thin sliced ham and potatos) and poulet badquaise which was the best. Its a chicken and rice dish in a cast iron bowl and was amazing. Everything else was good but this was great. Definitely worth a try. read more

Out of my 7 days in Paris I have to say my favorite meals came from Chez Gladines. My friend and I heard about this place from our bike tour guide. We got there around 5:45pm on a Friday night. The place was pretty empty when we got there and we chose to sit outside. Once it hit 6pm the place was packed. We got there in time for happy hour so we got the meat plate and sangria happy hour deal. The portions were great and the sangria was the perfect sweetness. I ordered the duck breast cooked medium and I have to say it is now one of my favorite meats (Sorry Donald). My friend got the signature veal dish which was large in portion size and amazingly delicious. They do offer the menu in English you just have to take a picture of the barcode on the French menu and it gives you a link to the menu. Enjoy! read more

Friend recommended Chez Gladines to me, and now I recommend it to you all. If you are ever in Paris, make a trip to this place and you will be in for a real treat. Portion sizes are HUGE! My friend and I ordered a Poulet Basquaise and a 5 Diamond salad to share, and could not finish it... had a bunch leftover. The basquaise sauce was DELICIOUS, and made an amazing dip for our complimentary baguette. The salad was full of meats, cheese, and potatoes. With only about 5 large leaves of lettuce in the mix, it is far from the traditional American expectation of a salad. Definitely stop by if you ever get the chance, and arrive around or before 7PM! We came around that time, and by the time we left around 8:15, there were at least 25 people waiting outside to be seated. However, it is definitely worth the wait! read more

A lovely find. Cuisine from Southwest France (Basque). The snails in basque sauce were such a delight. Mon Dieu. The escapole (veal cutlet) was absolutely fantastic as was the beef. This is a place without much pretension but with a lot of hearts. A very young clientele perhaps because of the huge value you get here for your Euro. Staff is vibrant and attentive. Even though our order was misplaced it was still a great place to eat at. read more

Delicious and affordable basque food located in the centre of Paris. I have been here numerous times and would not dare order anything but the five diamond salad. Be warned - it is not for the faint hearted, it contains more meat than lettuce! Very filling and very delicious and costs under €10! A bottle of house red will only set you back €15 too. Could not recommend this place more. read more

Really great meal for us- 2 adults and 2 kids. Shared duck confit, salad chevre chaud and lardons, chicken basquaise, and potato nature. Super affordable and tasty. Really big portions! Was able to get quickly seated on a Saturday at 7:30. But got really busy by 8:15pm. Outside sidewalk seating under heaters is festive and pleasant! read more

There was a sizeable group of people waiting for a table on a Wednesday night! They move through the list quickly though, and you can order to-go if you really don't want to wait. Seating us so quickly was the only good thing our waitress did for us though.. it took a very long time and proactiveness on my part to get our orders in. She didn't bring us separate glasses for water, so I had to wait until I was done with my wine to pour it in there. The table next to us just got up and got their own, but it was a tight squeeze in there and I kept hearing glasses crash to the ground - surely would have been me if I tried to get into the kitchen or bar area. Fortunately the food was plentiful and flavorful enough to cheer us up. We got the poulet basquaise and confit de canard - both incredibly generous with the meat and accompanied with a side of potatoes or rice. Even the salads that our neighbors got were hefty-looking. It was a good sign that my friend came back from the restroom and said that she saw different dishes on every table, and every single one looked amazing. Amazingly, each dish was enough to share, and 12 to 14 euros on average. It's an excellent option for dinner, especially if you're cold, tired, and/or starving. Definitely comfort food! read more

This place is crowded with locals! It was good! I had the duck breast and oh my, they were juicy and yummy! I got medium and it looked to be on the medium rare side, but I'm okay with that. I thoroughly enjoyed the food here. I wished the duck breast came with a sauce though. I would go back for a second round of duck breast if I could. The ocean's keeping us apart :( It's quite a casual, crowded atmosphere here so try to beat the rush if you can. The tables are tiny for tables for two. Pay at the register! What a true gem of Paris, showcasing the extraordinary art of a great steak. The meat is tender and cooked to perfection and the potatoes that come on the side are a perfect compliment. My friend ordered the salad bowl and in her words it was, "the best salad I've ever had." Could be the magic of being abroad and in the mesmerizing city of love, but having a taste myself the dressing was quite good. The environment brags a very local and raw form of a restaurant. There is always a line out of the door, so I suggest getting there earlier than you plan to eat. Also if you're like me and speak very little French, make sure you're proactive in letting someone know that you are there and waiting. There isn't really a booth with a hostess or anything. All in all, a very great restaurant in Paris! I've heard the duck entree and the escargot is very good as well. So if you're in the area, definitely check this place out. It'll be worth your while. read more

Chez Gladines - Favorite meal of all time - Basque Near Me - Paris, 75

My time here with my sister and friend was not a pleasant one. We were looking for escargot and this place seemed to have reasonable prices. My friend had a vegetarian salad with eggs and cheese. I had a bacon salad thinking it would have bacon bits in them. It wasn't an enjoyable dish for the salad underneath all the bacon were drenched in not only dressing but bacon grease. My sister had a dish with potatoes, cheese, and ham. It looked pretty good but there was so much cheese that it was hard to chew and there was a large amount of oil that it could not be healthy at all. We ordered the garlic and butter escargots and they had no taste. The only thing that made the dish better was adding salt and pepper three times. The service here was not enjoyable either. Although our waiter spoke English enough to understand us he was very forgetful. He forgot to put in our order of escargot so we had to remind him. Next we asked for our bill from a waitress. She told our server to give us our bill but he forgot and continued serving other customers drinks. We waited around 5 minutes until another young waitress who checked in for work finally gave us our bill. I would not recommend this place at all for the unhealthy amounts of oil and forgetful service. read more

I love this restaurant. We ended up coming here a couple of times because the food is so good and they speak pretty good English here. The portions are large. I tried escargot for the first time here and they are delicious. The duck is yummy here too. The service is excellent. We have come here with large groups and they have been able to accommodate us even though it's a relatively small restaurant. This is one of my favorites restaurants that we've eaten at in France. read more

So so. Food's ok. The chicken basque. Sauce is pretty good but the chicken was tough and dry. Was served enough ok-ish baguette so didn't eat the rice. Service busy. Decor sparse and ugly. Ambience absent. Some people were smoking in the enclosed patio and the smell traveled through the restaurant. Yucky. read more

Fun, casual Basque place with great food. We we're looking for a casual place with good food and found this on Yelp. A great find. Food was excellent and the place was casual with a fun vibe. Families, couples, older and younger filled up the place on a busy Friday night. Waiters were attentive even though it was busy. Food was very good, yet reasonably priced, including many Basque dishes and other more standard faire. read more

Amazing restaurant!! Popular with the locals, so you know it's good. And don't let the long line (also a sign of good food) scare you, they'll get you in quickly and you won't regret it! Reasonable priced comfort food for sure! We had the Poulet Basquaise and salade 5 diamants (just be aware there's gizzards and liver chunks as part of the "5" diamants, I picked them out, still the most amazing salad ever!) Back home, the same dish would've easily been 3x's the price with not even close to the same awesome flavors! The staff were very friendly in English or French, worked super hard, and brought the food out quickly. Seriously can't say enough good things about this place! Félicitations Cheickné!! read more

Stopped in tonight based on Yelp reviews (after a long walk down the Champs Elysees past the Louvre and to Notre Dame). We have been in Paris for a few days now and have eaten at some great restaurants (most also based on Yelp). So far this place is the winner. We weren't sure what to expect and, as a family of 5 from the US with 3 teenage daughters, I'm being somewhat cautious in my choices of where to eat (basically easing them in to anything really outlandish). The Basque food here was definitely new to us all (even the Basque beer). But, after reading some other reviews we dove in to Basque Chicken, Duck Breast, and the Herb Steak. The portions were huge compared to other Paris establishments and the flavors were excellent. My wife is still talking about the Basque Chicken. We stuck around for dessert and all left very impressed with everything. The wait staff was also very attentive which was great. This is not your typical Parisian decor but is still very hip. It's about a block south of Notre Dame/Ill de la Cite and very easy to find right on Blvd St. Germain. read more

This place was recommended to us from our tour guide as a local favorite. From a tourists perspective it's equivalent to bar food. If you are looking for a true Parisian local hang out experience come here. It's really casual and I'm pretty certain I was the only American in there. It was a packed house when we arrived for a late dinner around 9:30pm. Maybe not so late for Parisian standards but for someone who normally eats dinner at 4:30pm it was laaaaate! I guess the time change really threw me off. Anyway- the food was casual french food. Nothing too fancy. From perusing the room we ordered what we saw to be most popular....the charcuterie plate and duck. The charcuterie looked like something you can throw together at home. The duck was over salted served on a bed of fried potatoes and covered with cream sauce. Like i mentioned before it was like bar/comfort food. Being that it was my last dinner in Paris I was super disappointed. I wanted something a little nicer and did not mind spending the money. If you are looking for a local joint that is easy on the wallet then this is your place! read more

Had the snails in garlic and parsley, house special veal and the sliced duck breast. All were just ok. The veal sauce has a good flavor but was thick and dry and the veal had no good flavor. Certainly not my best meal in Paris. read more

I ordered the ajuerro, which was not bad, but it took forever to place our order even though the restaurant had very few customers present. We never had follow up service from wait staff to see if we needed anything and had to seek them out in order to pay our bill when we were long-done eating. I believe better options exist in the area for the price and selection where service is superior. Would recommend seeking them out. read more

I chose the Escalope Montagnard purely based on the yelp reviews of the dish and I was not disappointed. The whole restaurant is very cute, semi casual and very good service. The prices are really affordable for such big meals. Typing this 2 hours after dinner and I'm still stuffed full from one main meal and an entree. The bread basket kept being replenished free of charge and the waiters have us some extra info about the dishes, the Basque region and some recommendations. It became full about 8pm on a weeknight and I think it's a popular venue for the area! We are coming back during our trip in Paris that's for sure! read more

Food here is pretty terrible don't know how they got these reviews. The steak was a thin cut of cheap beef. The duck confit was meh. Best part was the fried potatoes. Waitress just flat out hate tourists so don't even bother but the manager was cool. What a solid meal. I love everything Paris has to offer, I just wish I had more of it without going broke. At Chez Gladines, you can have it all without breaking the bank. Me and my fiance came in late-ish and almost ordered the whole menu when our server advised to pump the brakes. We ended up with the veal and the duck with roquefort sauce. My fiance ate all of his dish in one go. Mine took a little longer and I still didn't finish, so not getting the potatoes was a good call, after all. We would definitely go back! read more

I was visiting my brother who is studying in Paris and he took me here on my first night. Even after two more weeks here, it's still my favorite restaurant in Paris which as you may guess- means a lot! The food is basque style (southern France near Spain) and is absolutely delicious. The portions are huge by French (and American!) standards and it is honestly one of the cheapest places I dined at during my stay. The sangria is made in house and is great. I ordered the 5 Diamants salad the first time, and my second time the escalope de veau montmarnge which consisted of veal, cured ham, cheese, potatoes, and this creamy mushroom sauce. Oh. My. God. So. Good. Seriously, both were incredible! We had the cheese tray for dessert which for 9 euro was the most FANTASTIC cheese tray I had in Paris! The only possible downside of the place is that it's fairly small and gets super packed very quickly so be prepared to touch elbows with your neighbor and enjoy some good company! A must go to during your stay in Paris! read more

Chez Gladine was, to sum it up in one word, "horrible". The waiter was non-chalant, his fingernails were dirty, there were bugs crawling on the walls and under the cash register, the omelette was too greasy to eat, the restaurant was way too warm, etc. When said waiter brought back a bag of bread from the local bakery, he and the cashier, who had just finished applying her make-up and counting money set to slicing bread without bothering to wash their hands. Add "gross" to "horrible" for the descriptive adjectives. read more

This is the 3rd Chez Gladines I've been to in Paris. The original one is still the best, but this one wins by location. The restaurant is busy, the servers are very typical French (slow) but really nice. We ordered Assiette complete (cheese and charcuterie), Poulet Basque, and duck confit and a 50CL of cote du rhone (red wine). Their wine markup is kinda ridiculous, but their food portions are huge so it kinda evens. The total was about 50 EUR for everything i just mentioned. All three of us were STUFFED. The food here is definitely not as delicious as the original location, but it is good and filling. I'd definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who visits Paris for some French food with Basque influence. read more

We stopped by Gladine's the first night we were in Paris for a late dinner around 830pm. When we got there, the restaurant was half full. By the time we had ordered, the place was packed inside and out. It seemed like a popular place for a younger crowd (perhaps college students?). I ordered the salade 5 diamants which is to-die for which had lettuce, tomatoes, chèvre, roasted potatoes, liver, gizzards and bacon/pancetta. The husband had duck with potatoes which was tender and delicious. We enjoyed the meal so much we returned a couple days later! Our 2nd meal was so-so hence the 3* review. This time around, we shared the salad 5 diamants because the salad was large enough to feed a family. For our starter we ordered the escargot and were disappointed to find a dead bug at the bottom of our plate. Service was slow as the place was more packed than the 1st day. I would recommend patrons come and try the salad which is worth the trip! read more

You know that book "French Women Dont Get Fat"? After eating at Chez Gladines, I don't know how the hell they don't! I would eat at Chez Gladines weekly, at least, and waddle around Paris proudly. Chez Gladines specializes in Basque cuisine and they had an expansive menu of many wonderful choices. We ordered a lot of things to try, and nothing disappointed. Chez Gladines is budget friendly and the portions are generous. It is definitely worth a visit--but go early. The restaurant is quite popular and gets very crowded around dinner. read more

Food is actually amazing from what I had (meat and cheese platter!) but unfortunately service was spotty; I didn't get my entree (I tried to order basque chicken) after almost 2 hours and the server did not even bother to check on me to see if everything was alright. Turns out he never put it in even though he repeated my order (that's odd, right?) The appetizer I was only able to eat half but was quite excellent, granted meat and cheese does not require "cooking" but just presentation. When I noticed everyone that was originally sat with me started trickling away and the new couple next to me got their entrees, I decided to call it quits and not wait any longer. I wanted to go to the eiffel tower that night before it closed but alas, the trend seems to be that you can't go sight seeing and eat really good food too in paris. read more

GO HERE. My first visit to Paris and I was lucky enough to find this place on accident and enjoy a meal. I THOROUGHLY enjoyed my meal: veal cutlet with cantal cheese, ham, basil leaves, mushrooms, and scalloped potatoes baked in a cast iron skillet and served to me in the skillet. It was hot yes, and it was incredibly delicious. The waitress and waiter were so nice.. the girl even wrote down the recipe so I could recreate this later. Also, I tried escargot for the first time here in a garlic butter sauce. NOT disgusting, but not really something I enjoyed eating too much. At least I get to check that off my list of 'exotic' foods to try. If I had more time in Paris, I would return here several times to try more of the menu (and get the same veal cutlet with cantal cheese dish. Go here, get a nice table outside in the evening, order a glass (or bottle) of wine, and enjoy great food in a beautiful city. read more

We chose this restaurant based on the reviews. We were disappointed but we're somewhat to blame. In my desire to break out of my routine, I ordered Andouillette sausage, mistaking it for something close to Andouille sausage. Not close! Don't make the same mistake - it's intestines and its taste was repellent. I'm not fussy but I couldn't eat more than a bite. My wife tried the skirt steak. She knows it's not a tender cut but her steak, although full of flavor, was uncuttable. We tried to get the waiter to help but he wasn't interested. So, the experience was disappointing. In that we probably should have stayed with the recommended dishes, we'll give them another chance later this week. read more

Amazing local French fare. The staff doesn't speak much English (except this one guy), but we had no trouble ordering and asking for recommendations. We got there around 6pm and the place was empty..turns out they don't start dinner until 7pm. We went across the street to have a beer, rest our feet and people watch. Around 6:40pm, they started seating people while the staff ate dinner together. My favorite dish was the escargot roquefort and it was amaaaaazing! The cheesy sauce was so good, we "scarpetta" that stuff till the bowl looked clean. The entree was something like a poutine with two big pieces of duck..I can't recall too many details because I was pretty drunk from the bottle of red we were having. Anyways, the food was amazing, service was quick and friendly. By the time we left, the place was completely packed and at least 20 people were outside waiting for a table. Btw, the seating is kind of like a communal table, where they'd put 3 tables together and parties of 2 would sit right next to each other...so you'll be rubbing elbows with your neighbor. read more
