One of the few places during our trip through Europe that did NOT kill our wallet, the only place that actually left me feeling full and a restaurant that had a great vibe, friendly staff and an English menu :). We came here thanks to the stellar Yelp reviews on our first night in Paris at about 10pm in the middle of the holidays. It was really busy but we got a table pretty quickly - we were starving (I think, bc of all the walking we do everyday and the few meals we had time to stick in between sights, we rarely felt satisfied/full) so the hubby got the cassoulet and I got the complete salad. Almost as soon as we had removed our jacket and tucked in with some french bread and cider our meal was out! OMG. What a giant fabulous salad - it is seriously COMPLETE goodness. Dressed in a tangy yummy mustard vinaigrette, topped with fresh tomatoes, a sprinkling of parsely, fried potatoes, a heap of cantal cheese, a fried egg and country ham - this salad is an absolutely delicious meal. I broke the egg on top of it and devoured this salad, sopping up all the extra dressing yolk and cheese with the crusty fresh bread. My husband also inhaled his cassoulet filled with pork, ham, duck and veg. It was a perfect meal that warmed us up from the winter cold. There's one specific dish that I wanted to try while in Paris - cassoulet. Yelp led me here to Chez Gladines, and as my fiance and I walked up we knew it was a good place because it was super busy and there was a large group waiting outside to get in. Protip: even if you see a group outside, go in and put your name on the list. Since there were only two of us we got seated before the large group we saw. Inside was pretty snug, as most Parisian places are, but overall it's a really nice casual place.. My fiance got the foie gras omelette, which was predictably super rich. My cassoulet arrived and it was quite a beauty. A large soupy dish filled with white beans, sausage, a chicken leg and a strip of salty savory pork belly. Between that and the bottle of red wine, I was dreading the long walk back home, but it was definitely worth it. As with most places in Paris the service is spotty, and the wait can be pretty long (both to get in and for the food), but we were both super satisfied with our meal and sometimes you can strike up a conversation with your table-mates like we did. My medium-well steak was RARE. Like basically raw in places. But it was tasty in the places that I dared to eat. The potatoes were well-seasoned and crispy and to die for. Really good. We were here on a Saturday night and it was really crowded, but they were efficient moving people in and out. The waiters were not annoyed at my terrible French and spoke English well (I tried some French but they spoke English to me which was very much appreciated:) ) We sat outside and enjoyed the street side atmosphere. Friend recommended Chez Gladines to me, and now I recommend it to you all. If you are ever in Paris, make a trip to this place and you will be in for a real treat. Portion sizes are HUGE! My friend and I ordered a Poulet Basquaise and a 5 Diamond salad to share, and could not finish it... had a bunch leftover. The basquaise sauce was DELICIOUS, and made an amazing dip for our complimentary baguette. The salad was full of meats, cheese, and potatoes. With only about 5 large leaves of lettuce in the mix, it is far from the traditional American expectation of a salad. Definitely stop by if you ever get the chance, and arrive around or before 7PM! There was a sizeable group of people waiting for a table on a Wednesday night! They move through the list quickly though, and you can order to-go if you really don't want to wait. Seating us so quickly was the only good thing our waitress did for us though.. it took a very long time and proactiveness on my part to get our orders in. She didn't bring us separate glasses for water, so I had to wait until I was done with my wine to pour it in there. The table next to us just got up and got their own, but it was a tight squeeze in there and I kept hearing glasses crash to the ground - surely would have been me if I tried to get into the kitchen or bar area. Fortunately the food was plentiful and flavorful enough to cheer us up. We got the poulet basquaise and confit de canard - both incredibly generous with the meat and accompanied with a side of potatoes or rice. Even the salads that our neighbors got were hefty-looking. It was a good sign that my friend came back from the restroom and said that she saw different dishes on every table, and every single one looked amazing. What a true gem of Paris, showcasing the extraordinary art of a great steak. The meat is tender and cooked to perfection and the potatoes that come on the side are a perfect compliment. My friend ordered the salad bowl and in her words it was, "the best salad I've ever had." Could be the magic of being abroad and in the mesmerizing city of love, but having a taste myself the dressing was quite good. The environment brags a very local and raw form of a restaurant. There is always a line out of the door, so I suggest getting there earlier than you plan to eat. My time here with my sister and friend was not a pleasant one. We were looking for escargot and this place seemed to have reasonable prices. My friend had a vegetarian salad with eggs and cheese. I had a bacon salad thinking it would have bacon bits in them. It wasn't an enjoyable dish for the salad underneath all the bacon were drenched in not only dressing but bacon grease. My sister had a dish with potatoes, cheese, and ham. It looked pretty good but there was so much cheese that it was hard to chew and there was a large amount of oil that it could not be healthy at all. We ordered the garlic and butter escargots and they had no taste. The only thing that made the dish better was adding salt and pepper three times. The service here was not enjoyable either. Although our waiter spoke English enough to understand us he was very forgetful. He forgot to put in our order of escargot so we had to remind him. Next we asked for our bill from a waitress. She told our server to give us our bill but he forgot and continued serving other customers drinks. We waited around 5 minutes until another young waitress who checked in for work finally gave us our bill. This place was recommended to us from our tour guide as a local favorite. From a tourists perspective it's equivalent to bar food. If you are looking for a true Parisian local hang out experience come here. It's really casual and I'm pretty certain I was the only American in there. It was a packed house when we arrived for a late dinner around 9:30pm. Maybe not so late for Parisian standards but for someone who normally eats dinner at 4:30pm it was laaaaate! I guess the time change really threw me off. Anyway- the food was casual french food. Nothing too fancy. From perusing the room we ordered what we saw to be most popular....the charcuterie plate and duck. The charcuterie looked like something you can throw together at home. The duck was over salted served on a bed of fried potatoes and covered with cream sauce. Like i mentioned before it was like bar/comfort food. Being that it was my last dinner in Paris I was super disappointed. I wanted something a little nicer and did not mind spending the money. I chose the Escalope Montagnard purely based on the yelp reviews of the dish and I was not disappointed. The whole restaurant is very cute, semi casual and very good service. The prices are really affordable for such big meals. Typing this 2 hours after dinner and I'm still stuffed full from one main meal and an entree. The bread basket kept being replenished free of charge and the waiters have us some extra info about the dishes, the Basque region and some recommendations. It became full about 8pm on a weeknight and I think it's a popular venue for the area! We are coming back during our trip in Paris that's for sure! read more

Stopped in tonight based on Yelp reviews (after a long walk down the Champs Elysees past the Louvre and to Notre Dame). We have been in Paris for a few days now and have eaten at some great restaurants (most also based on Yelp). So far this place is the winner. We weren't sure what to expect and, as a family of 5 from the US with 3 teenage daughters, I'm being somewhat cautious in my choices of where to eat (basically easing them in to anything really outlandish). The Basque food here was definitely new to us all (even the Basque beer). But, after reading some other reviews we dove in to Basque Chicken, Duck Breast, and the Herb Steak. The portions were huge compared to other Paris establishments and the flavors were excellent. My wife is still talking about the Basque Chicken. We stuck around for dessert and all left very impressed with everything. The wait staff was also very attentive which was great. This is not your typical Parisian decor but is still very hip. GO HERE. My first visit to Paris and I was lucky enough to find this place on accident and enjoy a meal. I THOROUGHLY enjoyed my meal: veal cutlet with cantal cheese, ham, basil leaves, mushrooms, and scalloped potatoes baked in a cast iron skillet and served to me in the skillet. It was hot yes, and it was incredibly delicious. The waitress and waiter were so nice.. the girl even wrote down the recipe so I could recreate this later. Also, I tried escargot for the first time here in a garlic butter sauce. NOT disgusting, but not really something I enjoyed eating too much. At least I get to check that off my list of 'exotic' foods to try. If I had more time in Paris, I would return here several times to try more of the menu (and get the same veal cutlet with cantal cheese dish. What a solid meal. I love everything Paris has to offer, I just wish I had more of it without going broke. At Chez Gladines, you can have it all without breaking the bank. I was visiting my brother who is studying in Paris and he took me here on my first night. Even after two more weeks here, it's still my favorite restaurant in Paris which as you may guess- means a lot! The food is basque style (southern France near Spain) and is absolutely delicious. The portions are huge by French (and American!) standards and it is honestly one of the cheapest places I dined at during my stay. The sangria is made in house and is great. I ordered the 5 Diamants salad the first time, and my second time the escalope de veau montmarnge which consisted of veal, cured ham, cheese, potatoes, and this creamy mushroom sauce. Oh. My. God. So. Good. Seriously, both were incredible! We had the cheese tray for dessert which for 9 euro was the most FANTASTIC cheese tray I had in Paris! The only possible downside of the place is that it's fairly small and gets super packed very quickly so be prepared to touch elbows with your neighbor and enjoy some good company! The restaurant is busy, the servers are very typical French (slow) but really nice. We ordered Assiette complete (cheese and charcuterie), Poulet Basque, and duck confit and a 50CL of cote du rhone (red wine). Their wine markup is kinda ridiculous, but their food portions are huge so it kinda evens. The total was about 50 EUR for everything i just mentioned. All three of us were STUFFED. The food here is definitely not as delicious as the original location, but it is good and filling. We stopped by Gladine's the first night we were in Paris for a late dinner around 830pm. When we got there, the restaurant was half full. By the time we had ordered, the place was packed inside and out. It seemed like a popular place for a younger crowd (perhaps college students?). I ordered the salade 5 diamants which is to-die for which had lettuce, tomatoes, chèvre, roasted potatoes, liver, gizzards and bacon/pancetta. The husband had duck with potatoes which was tender and delicious. We enjoyed the meal so much we returned a couple days later! Our 2nd meal was so-so hence the 3* review. This time around, we shared the salad 5 diamants because the salad was large enough to feed a family. For our starter we ordered the escargot and were disappointed to find a dead bug at the bottom of our plate. Service was slow as the place was more packed than the 1st day.
