I am traveling with friends and we heard good things about jaja, but unfortunately we were disappointed by everything other than the wine. First we got the apricot burrata, which was mediocre-- the apricots were flavorless and tasted out of season. We then ordered the duck, which came with corn and beans, both of which tasted and looked as though they came from a frozen prepackaged bag. The duck was tough, rubbery, overcooked, and nearly impossible to cut- as a person who loves to cook I was amazed that the quality and preparation was so poor. I have made better duck myself and have never had such bad duck before in my life. The eggplant schnitzel was so bad that we could not eat it. It was soggy and flavorless on the inside, yet still extremely rubbery and tough to cut. I would have asked our server for salt if he ever checked on us, but I am not sure how much it would have helped. This is not necessarily the fault of jaja, but there was a couple loudly watching videos on their phone and impending on our table space. Overall we were just wanting to leave to try to find something else to eat. When we let the server know about the low quality food and asked for our check they did apologize, but never brought our check. We then asked another server for the check and it still did not come. We finally went to the server station to pay so that we could leave. Save your money and save your time- go elsewhere. read more

My daughter took me here for lunch a few years ago and I was so pleased to return with my husband. The glass covered courtyard space is cozy, airy and welcoming. The wine list is excellent, the service is attentive. We had the codfish cakes, a modern update on one of our favorite dishes. The chef puréed Parma ham and topped it with a parsley dressing. We mopped up every bite with bread and almost embarrassed ourselves by licking the plate. I had the pigeon, an old fashioned dish that the chef made modern by roasting it with artichokes and it melted in my mouth. My husband ordered the Basque veal and I forget to ask how it was prepared, but they had no problem when we asked for a bit of extra char and returned it still perfectly pink on the inside with a nice crust. Classic French experience with an excellent chef in beautiful relaxed atmosphere that keeps us coming back to Paris. read more

It might be easy to miss this restaurant tucked in off the street. I urge you to not miss it. I also urge you to get a reservation. It's hot. Absolutely delicious meal in a warm but modern atmosphere. Incredibly creative and solid food. The front of the house manager/host was great and instantly made me feel welcome. The dinner is creative and beautifully presented. Limited options for vegetarian but not a problem. Salad was so original and flavorful. Everything about this place screamed "yes, amazing, how cool, it's going to be fabulous" until my mediocre meal arrived. Had the meal been just slightly above par it would have been a 4 or evening 5-star experience since everything else was there. For one, the location is ACE. Tucked away in an adorable little alcove off the busy street the restaurant screams "hidden gem" and even has an outdoor terrace for al fresa dining. Secondly the welcome was beyond warm. The hostess was so accommodating that she bent over backwards to find us a table outdoors. She allowed us to sit and wait at a table inside and ran over as soon as something opened up outside, brushing off any additional work that created for her and the rest of the staff just to keep us happy. It was service that you rarely ever see in Paris. Thirdly, the decor and clientel is very attractive but not over-the-top in any way. Unfortunately, and this was a doozy, my grilled octopus salad with new potatoes, calamata olives and red onions was not only super small for the price (23E quand meme!) it was also swimming in oil and very under seasoned. Bland, greasy, and tiny portions. Not cool. Plus this was a dish that the waitress said was one of the house's best. My dining companions had both the chicken and porc ribs, neither of which elicited any squeals of delight. So, Jaja has it all when it comes to service, locale, and decor, but it's sorely lacking personality and peps in the plate. read more

The restaurant was tucked away on a small street with a nice brick decor creating an inviting and charming feel. As Americans traveling in France we asked for a waiter that spoke English and the restaurant was very accommodating. The waiter explained they currently don't have English menus but was extremely nice and translated every item on the menu plus gave recommendations of what to order. We split 2 appetizers and an entree plus a dessert. For appetizers we had a deconstructed gnocchi which tasted like a savory donut. In addition, we had some sort of pulled pork appetizer that was served like a rectangle and with some sort of sorbet on the side. It was a bit of a confusing plate to say the least, it tasted pretty good but I wouldn't really recommend it as a first choice. For our entree we split a boar dish and quite enjoyed it. Came here for the terrace on a sunny Sunday and the terrace was definitely the best part. Service was slow and inattentive, and food was borderline okay (squash salad with goat cheese, sea bass cerviche, seared John Dorry, and a summer vegetable omelet - sounds better than it tasted). Downstairs is a wine bar. Looked pretty nice with 2 long tables and benches. Wine selection had about 10 choices. Tasted a Reisling with brunch which was okay although when we were done we were not asked if we wanted another!?!? In conclusion, Jaja means "so so" in Parisian. read more

Have to write this review after our wonderful night at Jaja just minutes ago. The staff is simply incredible. As a restauranteur with two establishments in Los Angeles I know how important it is that food and service be shared with care and love. Jaja delivers both. The staff could not have been more properly attentive, friendly and professional in their service and the food was simple and delicious. I ordered the mushroom starter which is served with a perfectly poached egg. My friends started with the ravioli gamba and the onion tartine. All three were delicate, balanced, and simply prepared. For entree two of us had the white fish special and the our third had the gnocchi. Again, the dishes were light (event the gnocchi with browned butter). We ordered a nice bottle of Pouilly Fume to balance a little of the richness with light acidity. After our meal I introduced myself to the manager. She was sweet and generous with her time despite a very busy Sunday evening. Again, superb service and hospitality at every stage. Our evening was made more special by Jaja - what more can one ask. read more

The food was delicious and made fresh- the presentation was pristine and each of my dishes had a unique flavor that I haven't experienced elsewhere. Jaja and Glou are 2 of my favorite restaurants in Paris. I love eating there and I recommend it very highly to all of my non-French guests. It is so rare to find moderately-priced Parisian restaurants that are friendly and accommodating to tourists and foreigners. The duck burger is amazing and although the menu changes frequently, there is usually some sort of vegetable and egg appetizer - blanched asparagus with crumbled hard-boiled egg, for example. It may sound weird but you have to try it. The food is super fresh and for the most part organic, locally grown and in season. They have an amazing wine selection. The service is friendly and they have menus in German and English. The wait staff all speak English. It's a good idea to get a reservation. They can accommodate large groups in the basement but be sure to reserve! read more

To hang out with my friends, I wanted to find a charming French bistro, possibly traditional, possibly contemporary, not too fancy, and after not being able to book at Le Colimacon (well-rated, frustratingly offered to book me a table and then refused), I decided Jaja looked fun. It's tucked away in the heart of the Marais, in a charming and cosy courtyard with a glass ceiling over the top. I like the business card that says 'Nice wine and food'. I'd agree. Two of us had to start the raw foie gras (cubed) with pumpkin, and a beautiful bouillon that was poured over the top. For my main, I had pigeon, which the charming waitress took the time to explain was not the pigeons in the park, but the more edible squab. Check out the claws on that thing though. Good decoration. It came with a really well-baked slice of pumpkin which was gorgeous. We even had desserts: I had a brioche with whipped cream and quince (diced, again, the chef likes dicing) and I stole mouthfuls of the boys' molten chocolate cake. All of this washed down with a lovely bottle of white wine, a Sancerre I think it was. The food was tasty and seemed like it bowed to a tradition of French food and then offered a contemporary twist. Thumbs up. The service could not have been more charming. I think, in comparison to Australian and American service, it was a bit slow, but I think that's the pace here. Take your time and enjoy! A great night, of which of course the best part was catching up with old friends, Paris, even moreso than other cities, seems to tie together the pleasures of food and wine and friendship in a way that's magical. read more

My girlfriends and I stayed in Le Marais while in Paris and walked by this restaurant several times, until we decided to finally dine here our last night - and very fortunately too! I know not every meal will be these best ever, but this was a very disappointing experience among all the places we have eaten in Paris. The atmosphere was great and romantic and we got a table outside on the patio. Unfortunately our server seemed to resent us for being American and largely ignored us. Our starters were quite good (I had a braised endive with blue cheese that was great) by my entree of beef was not good at all. The meat was so chewy I could not cut through it with my steak knife. Far after the fact our waiter asked what the problem was but at that point my husband had long since finished his fish. This was an absolutely fabulous restaurant. The wait staff was so friendly and helpful we didn't think we were in Paris. The food was incredible! We had creme brûlée fois gras which was so wonderful my head almost blew off. Then a lovely duck and veal course perfectly cooked and beautifully done. Stumbled into this hidden little gem late on a Friday night, and was fortunate to be seated immediately at a table for two. My friend and I both had the cochon de lait, a special for the evening, and the dish was perfect-- tender, flavorful, and wonderfully plated and prepared. The interior is cozy and modern at the same time, and the outdoor patio (though it was too cold to enjoy this time of year) looks so romantic-- sheltered and quiet in the midst of the vibrant Marais district. read more

Yaaaasssssss. Love the food , wine ,people , everything about this place. Pricey but keeps the basics away.

So we've eaten at this place a couple of times now and really like it. We'd probably eat here more often -- once you're in Paris, this is right in the middle of everything, at the end of a cool street in the middle of the Marais -- but coming from Ashe County ... what can I tell you? I mean, it's a long way.... But enough about my problems. The menu has what I think one would call an eclectic mix of imaginative twists on traditional French dishes -- rabbits, veals, fishes (probably the sweet spot), foies. I mean, if I were some sort of foodie, or even observant, I could list them for you. But I'm not and -- this is the important thing -- the menu is clearly seasonal and had turned over completely in the time it took to hump our sorry selves back to Paris. We found this to be a big atout, which I think means a big plus. The staff is nothing but friendly and is good about seating folks. It's cozy but not too cozy and there are different places you can sit, including a sort of a terrace garden at the entrance. I'd try to make a reservation, but I wouldn't use the lack of one to avoid stopping by. If this were in the U.S. I'd give it a 5. However, in France they are less inclined to hand out superlatives, and this restaurant is in France. read more

Amongst a neighborhood full of amazing restaurants, Jaja was a huge disappointment. Our server was running around like the place was on fire and giving us mere seconds to order and getting frustrated when we needed a little more time. All of our food came out at the same time even though we ordered our entree first. I had the gnocchi, and it had no flavor and my partner ordered the fish which was not much better. I made reservations for JaJa for a Saturday night. The staff was friendly, seated us right away, and the place was charming and beautiful! However, for a busy, packed-solid Saturday night, the place was woefully under-staffed. I saw a single person - ONE - in the kitchen, one bus-person, and only a few waitresses. It's no wonder it took over 30 minutes between appetizer were finished before entrees arrived, and that one of the entrees was the wrong dish, stone cold, and the chicken was seriously under-cooked. The staff was apologetic and sorted things out the best they could, but I can't be surprised the food showed up, late, wrong, cold, and under-done when they were so drastically understaffed. The rest of the food was really tasty, they just should put more staff on the clock for busy weekend dinner service! read more

I will never go back again and won't recommend it to anyone. First of all, the meal is really mediocre(well, to be fair, the 1st course "grilled octopus" is not so bad, it's just very very small portion:2 pieces), but the 2nd course "rum-steak" is horrible, both sides overcook and hard as stone(I ordered "à point"!), I tried two bites and really couldn't more, so I left the plate almost untouched. But the meal is not the worst thing here, the service is. Several waiters and even the manager passed by when I "finished" the plate, since the restaurant is so small, they obviously saw it when I finished but they pretend not having seen anything, and more ridiculously, when I asked them to bring my check, the waiter asked me:"is it good?" What did he expect to hear when the customer had already replied by her plate? To respond to his little professionalism and rudeness, I had to act as same rude as him, so I said: unacceptable. read more

We had dinner at Jaja on a busy Friday evening. We were the first to get seated at 7:30 pm at opening and within fifteen minutes, the restaurant was full. Good sign. Food is tastey, artistic, and refined. The wines on the list are fabulous. Their house wines are nice, but spend a few more euros and you get wines that thrill your taste buds. Our server Quentin was professional, friendly, and accommodating to all our needs. Perhaps some reviewers have run into inexperienced servers, but the ones we've had have been warm and pleasant with no edge or attitude. It's a sophisticated crowd of locals, tourists, couples on dates, groups out for a nice meal, and families young and old. And Marais--lovely Marais is a fantastic place to visit day or night. read more

Perfect date night in Paris. We walked around Le Marais reading menus and chose Jaja for its distinctive selection--our hopes for something a little different than traditional bistro fare were more than met with a delicious sausage appetizer (with sautéed fennel and onion base), perfect prime rib & tender chicken on mashed parsnips with thyme. Each dish was light, flavorful, and creative without relying wholeheartedly on the traditional heavy French sauces... Lots of fresh herbs & ingredients... And with a greenhouse-chic (but formalish) feel, the atmosphere was spot on. After eating at a number of old-school French restaurants Jaja felt delightfully modern. Great find. read more

Living in Paris there are tons of choices, yet we tend to continue to go to the places we know are reliable. JaJa used to be one of my favorite 'go to' places - sadly the lunch service on the several occasions that I have been has not been as up to scratch as the dinner service. Service at lunch was slow and patchy - we had the impression that we were at the end of the service, or perhaps the table that everyone thought everyone else was covering. Most recently the coffee with their version of the 'Cafe Gourmand' never arrived, and whilst we pointed this out to them, the made no attempt to adjust the bill to reflect this). Food is always wonderful - my favorite still yet is the JaJa Burger (a beautiful interpretation using Duck), however I would give a miss to their version of the 'hot dog' that has recently appeared on the menu. Despite leaving slightly unimpressed on the last occasion (really a result of the service), I still give them four stars - the location is great, ambiance is lovely, and food has always been creative and tasty. Will go back again, but will think twice about going during lunch. read more

This restaurant was so terrible it made me cry. To have wasted a dinner here while in the food capital of the world, on a limited schedule, was one of the biggest mistakes of my entire life. The dining room stunk of bleach, the service was terrible, the food was frozen or canned, and the crowd consisted of Russians picking their teeth with steak knives and other undesirables. I honestly believe that what they tried to pass off as rabbit was in all actuality rat. Avoid at all costs!!! Shame on you Marion Cotillard!!!
