Food--quite good. Service--rather odd. My husband had made a reservation at Le Fumoir well in advance of our visit to Paris. He chose it because of the reviews and also the fact that the seating area layout seemed to provide more space between tables than is sometimes the case. When we entered, a server directed us to the host station by the bar. My husband had printed out his email with the address & the reservation, and he had made some notes on it about things to consider on the menu. We were seated at a nice window table A woman did come right away to ask about sparkling or still water. Wines are by the glass--no bottles were listed that we saw. The server just stood over us for several minutes while we were looking at the menu, which was a little uncomfortable. So my husband explained we would need a few minutes. She seemed offended. Then the male host came over and insisted on seeing the paper my husband had with the email. He took it out of my husband's hand and started trying to read my husband's notes. I asked if there was a problem with the reservation--had they found it? The man said something about wanting to know if it was prepaid (do they do gift certificates in Paris? We had no idea what he meant). I said no, it was not, so he left again. The menu is prix fixe. A different server came to take our order. She was more upbeat and jovial. The amuse bouche was a pickled herring. I ordered the pumpkin veloute soup, which was yummy. Then I had the vegetarian plate, which was fine but not memorable: squash, mushrooms, and an egg on top. My husband ordered the sausage plate. At the end, I requested the check (l'addition"). The server asked twice if we wanted to add a tip to put on the card. I have not had that happen before in Paris, where the tipping conventions are different, and a 15% service charge is included in the prices by law. I asked if it was not included ("compris") and she said no, it was not. I did leave a cash tip. But all in all, some of those awkward moments with the staff detracted from the experience. read more

Our trip to Paris included dinner at Le Fumoir. It is a tasting menu for about €100 per person not including drinks. This restaurant is absolutely packed and I don't know what % are Walk ins but my hubby booked the restaurant a month in advance. The food is average and the service lacking. Our dinner lasted almost 3hours and that's not because we were slow but rather, the wait staff was missing. One party beside us left after about more than 45 mins of the waiter not showing up to get their orders. The restaurant itself was unique though. Where we sat looked like a library before with books all over the room. It could be that we came at a bad time, nonetheless, there's other restaurants in Paris to try before I come back to Le Fumoir. read more

Five stars due to the exceptional service we received. The menu was in French, however, our incredible waiter took time to explain the menu in English to us. He went out of his way and we sincerely appreciated his kindness. Located right across the Louvre, this was a perfect spot for lunch with a beautiful view. The restaurant was very clean and cozy. We stopped by for lunch and my husband tried the veal, and I had the club sandwich. Both meals were filling and delicious. First place we visited in Paris thanks to the recommendation of a friend who used to work here. Had a fabulous dinner our first night here, a three course fixed price menu. They did have at least one vegetarian option in each of the courses. English was on the menu and spoken by our waitress which was a nice touch but of course not necessary or expected. Had drinks outdoors while waiting for our Louvre entrance time another day, and had some delicious cocktails and enjoyed the weather and people watching. My son and I went here after doing a tour of the Louvre and landed about 8 PM at the restaurant. They were able to seat us which was a miracle. The place filled up soon after. Were here for a late lunch. The menu is very short but great. We ordered ginger beef tartar and veal cold cut toast. Both are wonderful. My hot drink (turmeric with milk and honey) is also great. The thing about Paris is that you need to watch for touristy restaurants, but this one is not one of those (recommended as one to try around Louvre among all other tourist traps), and definitely "fait Maison". You can't beat this location - directly across from The Louvre and within walking distance to everything you might care to see in Paris. Tons of nearby cafes and dining and hotels and shopping and pastries! While here with my fiancee on business, one of his work peers brought us here for dinner. A solid, authentic french dining experience, which means it takes a while. Service was pretty good here (but that might be bc two of our party spoke fluent French) and the food was amazing. Menu allows for you to pick and choose if you want 1-2-3 course menus with dessert. Lovely selection of wine and whiskey as well as a delicious grape/ginger mocktail for me (the non-drinker of the group who didn't have some of the bottle everyone else enjoyed). From the menu of the day, I chose the kale soup to start, a turbot fish entree, and poached pears with pistachio ice cream and a latte. YUM. Seriously delicious food in a classy establishment. It's about 40 euros for an appetizer and a entree or an entree and a dessert which seemed like a very reasonable rate considering how beautiful the restaurant is and how good the food was! I got the homemade sausage that came with a cucumber salad and mashed potatoes and I could definitely recommend. The flavors were incredible and the meat was so well prepared. For dessert I had the chocolate cake with cherry sorbet. The cake was good but nothing special but the sorbet felt so fresh, it was great! For a solid French dining experience, Le Fumoir provides a great tasting food in a beautiful setting that is worth visiting when you are in Paris. Literally translated into "the smoking room," Le Fumoir is set up to look like a dimly lit study or library where Parisians probably once commonly smoked in. It is beautifully set up with little details accounted for all across the restaurant. Thankfully, for those worried about actual smokers should not be deterred. In terms of the dinner menu, it does appears to change seasonally. While all the food was great, there were definitely some highlights with a few just okay dishes. In terms of the appetizers, I found both the beef tartare and the duck salad great but nothing special. For the entrees, I absolutely loved our breacher and scallop dish, while I thought the veal and the pork chop were just okay. The restaurant truly shined during the dessert where the mango tapioca dish was probably my favorite thing I have eaten in France. In terms of service, the waitress was super helpful and attentive. Located near the Louvre, it would be a great spot to drop by after a long day at the museum. I almost hate to share this with others as I don't want this place to lose its charm and quality, but it wouldn't be fair. Plus they offer options for dairy allergies. Disappointing experience at Le Fumoir. You get to choose your options from a prefixed menu. There was two of us. We got the appetizer and main, and a main and dessert combo. It started off great with the appetizer, beef tartar. The flavors were bright and fresh and the daikon added a great new flavor that I've never had with tartar before. But the rest of the evening went south after that. It took a little over an hour to get out main dishes. No idea what was going on. No one came by to check on us, ask if we wanted refills on our drinks while we waited for our food. Someone finally came by, said sorry and 10 mins later our dishes showed up. Burnt Mackerel: dish came recommended by the server. Besides being very salty, the dish had no other flavor. I think because our dishes were forgotten, they had the kitchen rush it and they just messed up cooking. Duck: this was a great dish. Meat was Nicely cooked. The cherries and roasted beets were a great added flavor to the meat. Dessert: yogurt ice cream with almond cake. Average. I've had better of both. That's all. It wasn't until the end when I asked for the check and pointed out that the food took longer than usual did the server say, "well, the kitchen lost your check. What can I do." -- he could have informed me that had happened instead of letting me just sit there in oblivion. And he didn't care. Didn't even offer some sort of customer service to make up for forgetting about us. It was a long uneventful meal that was worth spending my time at. My first night in Paris, so I decided to have my first French meal. First step use Yelp to find the best restaurant within my vicinity ! Love Yelp I picked it had ... stars with ---- reviews. Atmosphere was very upscale, waitress was all business but the maitre was very friendly and helpful in explaining the menu and attending to my table. To start I had the veal tartare, and to my surprise I really enjoyed this dish. I had reservations at first because it's raw veal. However it was quite delicious. I proceeded with my main course which was the roasted lamb with a delicious mint sauce. It was equally as good. I ordered a ceviche to try and I must say I did not really enjoy it due to the sweetness of pineapple that was in the dish. Overall I was very content with everything this restaurant has to offer. Just finished an amazing meal here!! Honestly tonight it was out of two places and I chose Le Fumoir and I'm so glad I did! Pri fixed menu 36 euros, three course. I was so hungry I opted for 3 instead of 2 but that's an option too. First time trying Steak tartare and it was delish, a little salty brine from a few capers and a cream with just a hint of horseradish layered in the middle and a bit of shaved beets and dill. Yummy, rich and a good size. Didn't finish it and I'm glad I did so I could eat all my Cod (perfectly cooked) with a wonderful brown butter sauce? (Not 100 % sure) and Jerusalem artichokes. And the kale, or radiccio, can't remember, wish I'd taken a pic of the menu, soooo much flavor, like a nutty slightly roasted flavor. I will hopefully be returning soon for this dish!!! We had lunch here. Our reservation was 1pm, but many people were still enjoying their lunch. As soon as we entered the restaurant, a hostess came by and offered the coat check. Very nice. This restaurant was located right across the street from the Louvre. Very convenient and very pretty. The menu was written in both French and English. We had Risotto, Seafood Pasta (very black from squid juice), and Snapper dish. My fish was small and lightly seasoned. I loved it that way. We then had desserts. Chocolate Cake and Mango Tart. Soothed by a large leather club chair, I relaxed back to take in the view of the "smoking". Decorated like a 1920's library or lounge with wood floors and some leather club chairs, "The Smoker" is a haven in the busy next to the Louvre area. Full of local workers at lunch time, take advantage of the petit dejeuner, or lunchtime deal, and you get three courses for around 20 Euros. I do speak French, which helped get us a table the first time we had lunch, and which resulted in the comfy leather club chair the second time. Both Maitre de's were friendly and efficient, but this place is packed from opening until around 2pm, when it cleared out a bit. I had a great quinoa chicken salad my first stop in, but opted for the complete meal the next time. I had a decent Margarita with my meal, but a French "aperitif" or cocktail, is like a snack drink, served just to whet your appetite, unlike the large swimming pool-sized Margaritas we whomp down in California. I chose the fish entry, which I had checked out on another diner's table previously, which was perfection, followed by a flourless chocolate tort with raspberries, one of my favorite combinations, and a great ending to the meal. We had the same waitperson on the second visit, and she recognized us, and was very friendly, making us feel almost like regulars! Le Fumoir is great for fueling up while art viewing at the close by Louvre. Sink back and enjoy the delicious and soothing food while doing a bit of people watching. Cold and desperate during pouring rain and near the Louvre, I thought sure anywhere I went would be an overpriced crappy tourist trap. But my dining partner did a quick phone search and found thus place listed on Chowhound as a good, classic French cafe. And it was. Despite the heavy precipitation, we sat outside and were pleasantly surprised to find heatlamps above us keeping us warm. And, despite being the only people eating outside, our server gave us good help. She also spoke English (and the menu is bilingual, if you are concerned about reading a menu in French). For lunch, I had the truly tasty 3 course prix fixe (fixed price) menu, and I got it all for 23.5 Euros. This was a good deal for Le Fumoir, as my husband's main course alone was 24 Euro. Now, not all dishes were able to be included in the prix fixe menu, but I was impressed with what was included. The food I got was delicious! I got: creamy nettle soup with an no organic poached egg, chicken wrapped around thin sliced ham alongside lemon risotto (the risotto being the best item of the bunch), and a flour less chocolate cake with pistachio cream and raspberry sorbet (see pictures). Everything was really good, not the bottom of the barrel dreck that you sometimes get in a fixed price situation. My huband's tranchee of beef was ridiculously delicious--well seared and perfectly done. I recommend this place as a good respite from the madness of the Louvre crowds, or even if you are not nearby to see the museum. The restaurant is a destination in itself--definitely one of my top Paris meals. read more

A Rick Steve's recommendation and we were not disappointed. As with most Paris cafes they have outdoor seating. In this case it looks across the street from the Louvre. Inside was spacious. Our server was excellent and spoke English. The menu also gives English explanation of (most of, not everything translates) the food. The presentation was as good as the taste. We had chicken, ravioli and the fish of the day. It was a basic white fish, but cooked perfectly. It came with what was probably the best potato salad I have ever had. This cozy and atmospheric bar is still worth a visit. By sitting there in a leather chair, reading a newspaper and sipping a whisky, you could expect to see coming in someone like Ernest Hemingway. It feels like you went back in time. Unfortunately the cocktails can be very average. I ordered a Cuban daiquiri (my favorite cocktail). A cruel deception! I could hardly feel the rom. In addition the service can be indifferent. We have waited 20 minutes until they noticed our presence. It was a good thing that we weren't in a hurry! It's right next to the Louvre, so I recommend making a booking on Friday night, going to the Louvre beforehand (it's open late on Fridays) and heading here for dinner and drinks afterwards! I went for the pre-fixe menu and was not at all disappointed. Food: 1) Scallops--the best I've ever had. 2) Lobster bisque--nothing amazing compared to the scallops but still really good! My go to place in Paris for happy hour cocktails. LOVE. 18h-20h cocktails are 8€ and they have a VERY extensive cocktail list that are real cocktails not your standard teaspoon of alcohol and juice combo (!) Oh and who can fault a place that gives you olives and nuts with your drinks? Such a classic but a dying classic in Paris unfortunately. The decor is very old world French bistro, deep reds, leather lounges which make for lots of atmosphere in the winter and a small heated terrace for the brave. In spring/summer they open the side terrace, which gives more places to soak up the sunshine. Food wise: I've only ever eaten the club sandwich, which was fine but with the plethora of Japanese restaurants in the area I'd sooner move on after happy hour. read more

I have actually only eaten at Le Fumoir one time for lunch and It was quite nice. However, I frequent Le Fumoir as an almost everyday go to place for Happy Hour at 18:00 everyday. After a busy day touring Paris or a day at the Louvre for several years I seem to make my way to Le Fumoir. It is a great place to hang with upscale but casual vibes. During Happy Hour it gets very busy so if you are not there right at 18:00 or shortly after you most likely will have to wait a while for a place to sit. Overall we really liked Fumoir, although I can't say that the food was too memorable. I remember it was good but didn't blow us away. Restaurant is located near the river and louvre. A very nice walk to get to it. When we walked in it was packed with locals having drinks. Unfortunately outside area only serves the bar and dinner is only served inside. Our table was awesome. It was right by the giant wall size book case and I would say made for a pretty romantic setting. The drinks were very good although not cheap by any means. I think this was to be expected given the area. Menu was a pre-fix with two options, either with or without dessert at two different price point. I want to say it was either €35 or €38 with dessert. I remember the food being very good even though I don't really remember what actual dishes we had! It was good but not all that memorable. Bread was amazing and we asked for doubles! Le Fumoir is conveniently close to the Louvre for either lunch, afternoon snack or dinner. Paris has a time for each meal, so if you specifically want dinner, you need to go after 7pm; before that would be "tea/snack" time which means their kitchen is closed. The restaurant is extremely dim. They have room in the front of the restaurant for coffee and tea, the tables are a lot lower (be warned). The seatings inside were more "normal" and is more comfortable for a meal. There were 2 waitresses running around the entire restaurant trying to serve everyone. Even though the restaurant wasn't crowded, it was average waiting time for our food. Food was interesting. I had the duck salad which was quite delicious. The plate had endive leaves filled with cucumber, cauliflower and barley and topped with smoked duck, dressing was perfect and light. 3.5 out of 5 I went here for brunch yesterday and I was very pleased with my meal. For 21 euros you get a glass of either orange or grapefruit juice, a coffee, a basket of breads and pastries, a savory main course, and a desert. I had the salmon, potatoes, and spinach in a creamy onion mustard sauce followed by a fluffy blueberry pancake (not a crepe, a real pancake). The food was delicious, the service was lacking but somehow it wasn't too bothersome. Our waitress never managed to bring us the mochas we asked for, but the french pressed coffee she did bring us hit the spot. This was simple and abundant hangover food. First time here precisely first in Paris, this restaurant was on my go to list. It's conveniently located by Musee du Louvre and within footsteps from the Louvre-Rivoli Metro station (2 line). As you enter the main dining room its quite spacious. Started with terrine de foie gras, my gosh amazing! In particular for those who's got a palate for passion fruit. Moving along to the main course- poached cod topped with red curry sauce resting on a bed of basmati rice nicely blended with a medley of cabbages. We wanted to find a delicious dinner for our Paris trip and ventured onto Le Fumoir. We started with their delicious chicken mousse, it may have a fancy name but I can't recall. This was so delicious that I wanted a few more free plates. I had the oysters which were way toooo salty for my taste. They came in sea salt but oysters can be salty in itself so this is a terrible choice for a prop. The oysters left much to be desired and can be properly named one of the worst I've ever had. The entree in itself was delicious and the fish was quite fresh. I enjoyed my entree far more than my appetizer. The mashed potatoes with the caviar was a perfect addition and carefully blended the flavors of the meal. We finished the meal with the coffee ice cream and this was also quite scrumptious. The ice cream was fresh and the caramel bites that were added were also quite delicious. Aside from the atrocious oysters, I truly enjoyed my meal at Le Fumoir and will return. Le Fumoir is where I ate the best mushroom risotto that I have, and probably ever will, taste. We got hungry while we were touring the area around the Louvre and came across Le Fumoir. Getting a table was not a problem and we were promptly seated. We went there during the summer, so a cold gazpacho, bread, and butter (mmm...French butter) was offered to us after we ordered. My favorite thing that we ordered was the mushroom risotto appetizer. It was creamy, earthy, and cheesy bliss. My second favorite dish was the cheese ravioli appetizer. The ravioli dough was so delicate, that they resembled a wonton wrapper. This place may have higher prices, but the food was what I can only describe as "silky" and it was worth every cent. read more
