    General Tso's chicken.

If you're looking for authentic Chinese/Sichuan food, this is your place. They have a wide range of options that cater to a range of tastes. The service is quick and friendly, and I have yet to have a less that enjoyable experience! My go-to is usually the General Tso's Chicken. Perfectly glazed with your choice of spice level, perfectly crispy and just what's needed to warm you on a cold day!

Food is always on point! Talk about authentic Chinese food in RI this is the place to go! Not many places in RI serve authentic Chinese food never mind make it this good it's a must try place. My all time favorite has to be the braised fish fillet with Napa cabbage and their Chongqing chicken to die for! Nowhere in RI can compare. The braised beef in the noodle soup is soo ridiculously tender and delicious. Staff are always very nice as well always love to support a small family business.

Chengdu's interior - a little on the rough side

Uneven. Some of the dishes were terrific; some were meh. On the positive side was an outstanding double-cooked sliced pork dish that was savory and delicious with thin pieces of pork belly and sliced onions and peppers. Also good was a braised fish soup with thin noodles and pickled vegetables which had an enticing mild and sour taste (better than it sounds!). On the so-so side was a lackluster salt & pepper shrimp which although it had a good flavor, the fried shrimp was soggy and missing that delectable crunch and crispiness. Also rather disappointing was the dim sum we sampled - just not much flavor in the juicy pork dumplings and crystal shrimp. The pea pod leaves in garlic sauce was also just ok, not having enough sauce. On the downside, the place is not very appealing in decor or furnishings; the booth seating is awkwardly placed being too far from the table and immovable so that you're perched on the edge of your seat trying to feed yourself. Service is a bit brusque. Oh and finally, although the signage says they take credit cards, they really prefer cash and will direct you to a nearby ATM. I could forgive all this if only the food had been consistently executed.

I really enjoy the food here but I feel like i'm only touching the surface on what they have to offer. Everything i've had so far has been stellar! I've gotten delivery once and dined in the other time (it was pretty empty but I could see a plethora of takeout orders). My first time I ordered delivery with my roommate and got Chonq Qing chicken (flavorful, delicious and distinct), Dan Dan noodles Chengdu style (classic), Green Bean Noodle (first time ever trying mung bean noodles and I dug the texture and flavor), a recommended spicy Double Pork dish (very tasty), and String Beans with Garlic (solid)...we should have also ordered a side of plain rice or made it at home to compliment the dishes. **Delivery was very fast but I'm not sure if they still deliver or not- I called a few times after my first delivery and they were not delivering at that time. I hope they continue delivery in the future! My dine-in order with my friend was Pork Wontons in Red Sesame Oil, Kung Pao Tofu and Dan Dan noodles. I also got to try some type of crispy fish from a neighboring table and I really loved the spices and flavor-would definitely try this dish again. When I think about delicious Szechuan in Providence, I dream about this place and will be back soon! My goal is to order from here with a large enough group of friends to get the full experience of trying more dishes at once- I love family style sharing! *I don't believe they serve alcohol and I'm not sure if you can BYOB- as a person who likes a drink with a meal I thought I should note this...but I look forward to coming back!

this is exactly what you need after a long day or in the middle of a rushed day. the service is hospitable and prompt. the booths inside are so comfy and it's the right amount of lighting to cure your hungry headache, and the tables are far enough from each other to either eat in perceived silence or comfortably hold a low key conversation. the food is served hot, seasoned, and timely for most dishes. it's clear the separate ingredients are sliced, chopped, ready and then combination is made when you order. i wanted a heaping pile of stir fry steak and green onions, and the dish was good but could have had more green onions. still delicious. my best friends wanted steak and vegetables and they also enjoyed it with white rice. they took home leftovers. i devoured mine because i didn't order rice. prices are great. i would get this for lunch and/or takeout too. glad i finally tried this.

Chengdu Taste is the ultimate "don't judge a book by its cover" restaurant. From the outside, it's... well, let's just say it's not winning any beauty contests. The exterior is nondescript, and completely unassuming--the kind of place you might drive past without a second glance. The dim sum is delicate, flavorful, and expertly crafted and not of the frozen variety (except for maybe the Crystal shrimp dumplings). The scallion pancakes? Pure magic. Crispy, flaky, and perfectly seasoned, they were so good we had one order then another. Hands down, the best I've ever had. The steamed vegetable dumplings had fresh flavors with the right amount of mouth feel, while the fried chicken dumplings had a satisfyingly crispy bite, giving way to a juicy, well-seasoned filling. They weren't just good--they were downright addictive. The cold shredded chicken salad was refreshing and zesty. The Singapore noodles? A perfect mix of spices, textures, and just the right amount of heat. Chengdu Taste may not look like much from the outside, but inside, it's a hidden treasure trove of incredible flavors. If you love Chinese food, ignore the exterior, walk in with an open mind, and prepare to be absolutely blown away. Just be warned: those scallion pancakes will haunt your dreams.

Fabulous Szechuan! Large menu with The menu has more exotic Szechuan specialties for more adventurous types, but it also has traditional choices for those with a tamer palette. Although we ordered a bunch of Dim Sum, Husband's Beef & String Beans came first. The Soup Dumplings were smaller than we are used to, but were very tasty We also ordered Fried Pork Dumplings, Dumplings with Chili Oil. The dumplings with the chili oil were good but probably my least favorite. My favorite starter though was the Szechuan Cucumbers. They had such a tasty, savory sauce, but were still so light and refreshing! 17 year old and I shared two main dishes as well. Everything had tons of flavor and lots of spice!

    L22.Country Style Bean Curd

Ordered takeout from here for the first time and absolutely enjoyed the food. We started with the pork dumpling in chili oil. The dumplings had a good ratio of the amount of filling and skin. The chili oil wasn't too spicy. There was about 6 dumplings. This was $9.95. We ordered two entrees from the lunch special. My husband had the L22.Country Style Bean Curd and I had the L28.Ma Po Tofu w.Mince Pork. When we first received the containers, the portions looked a little small, but it was very filling. I really enjoyed the ma po tofu with mince pork. The pork pieces were small and the tofu was very fresh and smooth. It was a little spicy, but not too bad. The lunch special comes with white rice or vegetable fried rice and a side. We chose vegetable spring rolls for the side. The spring roll was very crunchy and fresh. The vegetable fried rice actually had vegetables in it, sometimes at restaurants the options are just white rice or fried rice with pork. The country style bean curd was $11.95 and the ma po tofu with mince pork was $12.95. It is a little pricy for the lunch special, but it was worth it. I can't wait to try this restaurant in person and order additional sichuan dishes.

String beans, sliced ginger duck, pickled vegetables

This place looks run down from the outside. In fact, I would have guess it was permanently closed. I am SO glad it's not. I first came in with a large group on a Sunday. The place was absolutely empty. We decided to order a bunch of food and share. I am so glad we did! Just about every single thing I tasted was amazing. Shrimp crystal dumplings: amazing. Cold szechuan noodles: the best ever. Scallion pancake: delish. We also had a fish soup, the Chong Qing chili pepper chicken, Kung pao chicken, and a duck dish. Everything was so delicious but the chili pepper chicken was the best. It's fried and spicy but somehow light and crispy. My favorite. I came back two days later to get it again, and in addition to reordering some of the things I already tried, I tried the pickled vegetables, the garlic string beans, and a sliced duck that had ginger with onions and peppers. Everything was so, so good. I am already figuring out how to justify going back soon. My mouth is watering just writing this review.

    Crab Rangoon
    Robert G.

The food was okay but it didn't stand out at all. I might be a little more critical because of the great reviews this place has but I need to realize that people will like Chinese food just because of the location of a place. We ordered takeout and the crab Rangoon had a rubbery texture, the lo mein had no sauce and not much chicken. The general tso and chicken dumplings were good but average at best.

    Meat with garlic sauce

I think people confuse this restaurant with another one with the same name but different locations. Because when I walked in I was surprised by the ambiance that is bright and spacious. There is no red light like I saw in the reviews. I don't know if the restaurant renovated or the photo is for a different restaurant, my experience was great here. Very good food and very friendly service, which is not very common in Chinese restaurants. Such a good experience!! I absolutely loved the food. It is not very spicy even though it's Sichuan style. I'm sure you can ask for more spicy, but standard taste is good for me. There are too many things I want on the menu, I plan to go back very soon and try other dishes.

Are you open for indoor dining?

It was open for indoor dining when we went 3 months ago.

Do you have outdoor dining? If yes, could you post pictures? Thanks.

When I went 12/19/21 there was a porch/covered area but the tables were not in use there. As of now inside seating only.

Is there any way to order online? The website has a shopping cart but says online ordering is not available. With only takeout and delivery options, this would be helpful for both customers and the restaurant. I wish Chengdu would get on Grubhub

    It's on uber eats.

Do they have any dishes that are just mildly spicy? Thanks!

Yes, we do have some dishes which is mild spice or non spicy, we can always adjust the spicy level for you, just let us know when you order :)

Anyone have any idea when they will reopen? I've called every month since January and keep being told they will open the following month. I know COVID has slowed things down but I'm sure they would make a killing on delivery!!

They are reopening June 15,2020 at their new 495 Smith Street location for takeout only! Daily hours 12 noon to 9 pm. Enjoy!

Is yelp aware that firmer location has closed but new location on Smith St is being prepared for opening? Yelp banner that restaurant has closed is misleading.

Hi, this is Chengdu Taste and yes we have dine in now!

Stopped by Chengdu Taste 12/1/19 at 2:30. Restaurant was closed and appeared to be out of business. Anyone know if it's truly closed down?

I just called. They are in the process of moving to a new location at 495 Smith St. which will open around February 1st. Looking forward to that!

Do they give you rice with the entrees? like the shredded beef? or should I order it separately?

There is a $1.50 charge for a bowl of rice.

Staff greeted us and got to see it real quick. We and another party was only ones there lunch time. Probably more take out than dine in. Menu selection was huge, so much to choose from. My gf is from china so picked out some noteworthy dishes to try and they did not disappoint! 4/5 stirfry bacon with bamboo shoots was excellent. The bacon is more like the fatty cross section of pork that's thinly sliced. It had a smoky flavor to it which mixes well with the crunchy bamboo and peppers. The spice level was also just right to give the dish a good kick. 3.5/5 fried intestines were also good but just didn't hit as well as the other dishes. Maybe just not crunchy enough. At least also spiced well. 5/5 Salted egg yolk with tofu... I could not stop eating this dish with rice. I don't know what kind of tofu they were using, but it was super silky, but it was also maintaining its form really well in firmness so doesn't break apart in contact. The salty egg yolk flavor balances out with the tofu and rice. It's so it's like a comfort food for me. 4.5/5 beef with Longhorn peppers, definitely on the spicy side, which I love. This dish was a bit softer than normal, but I was fine since we had rice to go with it. The beef strands mixed well with the thin sliced peppers so it was easy chew and the spice packs a punch. Overall, I love this place and will definitely come again when I'm around the area. The menu is so huge that I feel like I have to come back multiple times just to try 80% of the menu.

The front of house person was so sweet and accommodating. We were the only ones there at 12pm on a Sat and so she told me I could have a little sample of what I wanted to try ahead of choosing. I liked pretty much everything I tried. My favorite was the chicken with mushrooms - nice savory flavors and the shiitake had a phenomenal flavor packed with umami. Although I enjoyed everything, I will have to say it does feel heavy after eating. The carbs are placed at the bottom and all of the woks are placed on top so all of the oils and sauces drip drown to the rice and noodles. For the most part it's fine but can eat heavy. These were my impressions: - Red Ginger had a nice list of Authentic Chinese dishes before, not now. - The new waitstaff and lady at the front are not very friendly nor knowledgeable. I asked for something regarding the menu and none of them knew the answer. They had to go inside the kitchen to ask the chef and it took like 5 full minutes for this.... - The scallion pancakes had no scallion taste whatsover. Usually they come with a soy sauce dipping sauce, they are now giving you DUCK sauce for dipping sauce. - The Fish with Ginger and scallions does not come in a clay pot anymore, there's almost no ginger, 90% scallions. Taste was not as good as before either. - Pan fried noodles with roast pork was ok, but the pork was dry and bland. Not very good tasting. Very disappointed and that was probably my last visit. They had close to a year to keep the quality of the former food and kitchen and it is now focused on standard American Chinese fare, not Authentic.
