    Crab rangoon
    Andrea P.

In search of the perfect spot for Chinese. It was middle of the road. We got chicken pad thai, boneless chicken fingers, crab rangoon and dumplings. The crab rangoon was very good. I won't order from anywhere with crappy ones. The dumplings however were really greasy, we ordered fried but now I'm wondering if we got steamed by mistake. The boneless chicken fingers were pretty over fried. Overall not terrible but I've had better so had to give it three stars.

2 1/2 stars. Today for lunch we did take-out from Red Ginger in Johnston. They have been around for 20 or so years now. The last time I had Red Ginger was in or around 2009/2010 I knew exactly what to expect, and what I expected is exactly what I got. They do a good job with their General Tso and Pork Fried Rice. We also did a round of Steamed Dumplings. I can't measure places by their Dumplings as it wouldn't be fair. To put it short I like what I like, not top priority at Red Ginger. They are good, but not the best out there. They have served the Johnston area with pride for many years. Red Ginger is a nice place with a really great & friendly staff. Red Ginger is a solid restaurant. They are uniquely themselves, they have great reviews on the internet, and a loyal following. Enjoy, ChineseFoodInRI.com

Found actual maggots in my beef teriyaki! This place doesn't even deserve half a star!!!

Do you always offer hair cuts between cooking meals? This is absolutely unsanitary!

The new owner turned this place into a unsanitary place to eat! I was going to place an order until the pictures of maggots in there food was on Facebook from a very realiable source! Then tonight they are cutting hair in between prepping meals!

Red Ginger Special Chow Mein and the Salty Shrimp/Squid combo. Yum.

Can't complain - food is always good. Came for lunch early Saturday with my sister. The only problem is it's located in a small strip on a busy street with other store fronts with limited parking so parking can be a hassle. We ordered the chicken corn soup, not too many places make this so we always get it when we come. Nice velvety texture full of corn and chicken bits..yum. For entrees, we had the Red Ginger Special Chow Mein and the Salty Squid/Shrimp combo. The Chow Mein is our usual here - done just right, crunchy veggies, nice combo of meats poured over a bed of crispy noodles that soften over time. The salty squid/shrimp wasn't what we were expecting, thought it was going to be a lighter not so floury batter but still tasty enough with a little kick. We were the only ones in there and my 2 yr old nephew was a bit angsty but they were very accommodating - service was great! Nothing calms down a 2 yr old like a free fortune cookie, lol.

Only got the vegetables not the noodles. Disappointed to say the least. I checked to makes sure I ordered what I wanted and it should of came with noodles.

Staff greeted us and got to see it real quick. We and another party was only ones there lunch time. Probably more take out than dine in. Menu selection was huge, so much to choose from. My gf is from china so picked out some noteworthy dishes to try and they did not disappoint! 4/5 stirfry bacon with bamboo shoots was excellent. The bacon is more like the fatty cross section of pork that's thinly sliced. It had a smoky flavor to it which mixes well with the crunchy bamboo and peppers. The spice level was also just right to give the dish a good kick. 3.5/5 fried intestines were also good but just didn't hit as well as the other dishes. Maybe just not crunchy enough. At least also spiced well. 5/5 Salted egg yolk with tofu... I could not stop eating this dish with rice. I don't know what kind of tofu they were using, but it was super silky, but it was also maintaining its form really well in firmness so doesn't break apart in contact. The salty egg yolk flavor balances out with the tofu and rice. It's so it's like a comfort food for me. 4.5/5 beef with Longhorn peppers, definitely on the spicy side, which I love. This dish was a bit softer than normal, but I was fine since we had rice to go with it. The beef strands mixed well with the thin sliced peppers so it was easy chew and the spice packs a punch. Overall, I love this place and will definitely come again when I'm around the area. The menu is so huge that I feel like I have to come back multiple times just to try 80% of the menu.

I ordered the double pork.. came out beautifully served in a pot, delicious with peppers and note this.. spicy. But I like that! Scallion pancakes were great as were the delightful, ethereal, chicken fingers/ puffs. Left me asking the question, how did they do that? Portions were excellent as was the service. BYOB... enjoyed a nice sauvignon blanc.

When we went inside, there was only one other party there and no music, so just whispers and the sounds of utensils against plates. There are about 4-5 booths and 1-2 regular tables to choose from. Since l am not familiar with Sichuan cuisine, I had Al help me choose my dishes. I went with the dumplings in chili sauce, fried rice, eggplant in garlic sauce, and chongquin chicken. While we waited, we were given water. The dishes came out at different times. They first served us the dumplings which were really good. The sauce they were in did have some chili sauce, but it was mostly like a sweet soy sauce and really tasty. It came with about 6 dumplings with a perfectly cooked wrapper and filled with flavorful pork - simple but delicious. Next was the eggplant. I was expecting a heavy garlic presence, but it was more like a sweet and sour sauce. The eggplant was very tender, but really hot so we had to wait to let it cool down a bit. The rice came after. I honestly think this was one of my favorite dishes since it was perfectly cooked, great flavor, and good portion. Lastly, the chicken came out. There was a large pile of chicken, but half of it was peppers. The chicken was cut into little bite sized pieces, each fried perfectly. Some pieces were more tongue numbing than others but it was nothing aggressive; very gentle and comfortable numb. I would have liked if there were music, but the no music was fine too; an escape from chaotic reality. Our total was around $50, which wasn't bad for the amount of food we got. I would come back to try other items.

Apsara Restaurant - Steam Pork Bun

Apsara is one of my favorite restaurants in the World. Yes, you read that right--I have been to…read moreevery continent (except for Antarctica) and still write this with great confidence. I have been going to Apsara since the late 1980s, back when it was called "Bayon." It became AMAZING when it was purchased by the Te family, who still own and run Apsara. At its core, Apsara is and always has been loved by the college students in RI, for its kind servers, wonderful and eclectic foods (Cambodian, but also with Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese and Lao dishes, as well), very affordable prices and BYOB. The family has attempted various new ideas over the years, such as having sushi, and Asian shaved ices, and sticky rice desserts, most of which have come and gone, but the core menu is generally unchanged. One can still also try to order "off menu," although it's not as common practice as it had been. Start with the Nime Chow, which is essentially a fresh spring roll but with their delicious fish sauce, with crushed peanuts for dipping. I highly recommend adding a dribble of Sriracha to the sauce. Addictive! The chefs are known for cooking their stocks everyday, from hours before dawn. I find all of their soups to be delicious, with a suggestion to try their Vietnamese Sweet and Sour soup or their Tom Yum when you're battling a Winter cold. The also make Mekong fish cakes as an appetizer (finally now sometimes found at Thai places), as well as Natang, which is a minced pork with coconut cream and curry, and sometimes dried shrimp. You spoon it onto their homemade rice cakes... trust me, you'll never be tempted by Quaker Oats rice cakes ever again! Crispy wings are also solid, and the beef teriyaki is an essential (think Phnom Penh street food). The restaurant is pretty small and bustling, but very warm and "family-like." People there learn your name, as you learn theirs. Entrees are wonderful. The whole fish fried with fresh pineapple, cucumbers and tomatoes is killer! The stir fried chicken with lemongrass is delicious (try the "dry sauce") although they no longer make it with ground chicken and Thai chilis and basil (a shame as it was REALLY awesome!). The bee bongs are essentially a noodle bowl with vegetables and a protein, with fish sauce, chopped nuts and a taro fried spring roll. Other favorites include beef loclac (tender grilled beef cubes with onions and a yummy lime and black pepper dipping sauce) or the stir fried ginger chicken, with aged ginger and fresh mushrooms and onions. On a hot Summer day, the shrimp nyom (a cold shrimp salad) is tough to beat. Or mix it up, such as with Phnom Penh twilight, with calamari, shrimp, scallops and sometimes green NZ mussels. And if anyone is wondering, their white rice and their house tea are very high quality. If you are concerned about the somewhat dicey neighborhood (South Providence) or the small size of Apsara, take comfort in the fact that famous actors, musicians and celebrities have joined their kids to go there when attending the kids' graduations from Brown or RISD or wherever!

It's also BYOB, so you can bring your own drinks to enjoy with your meal. Overall, this small, family owned gem in Providence is definitely worth a visit.
