I've driven past so many times during the West Seattle Bridge closure. Finally, The Homie and I decided to stop in the last hour before closing for the day (5/2/26). Chelan Cafe has been open since 1938. Ample parking for the cafe that also had an attached bar with adjacent patio. The cafe itself has a U shaped counter, a few booths, and additional seating in another dining room. The walls are adorned with local art prints and decor - very pleasant. Menu had a great variety and also had featured specials on the whiteboard by the entrance. The waitstaff really work quite well as a team. Our waitperson was very personable and smiled despite the tail end of Saturday's shift. It was our first meal of the day, mid afternoon after attending a memorial, so we were definitely hungry. The Homie ordered chicken fried steak with country gravy. This came with poached eggs, hash browns, and toast. I was surprised he did not opt for sausage gravy and a biscuit. I ordered the corned beef hash with poached eggs, hash browns, and toast. This was the type of corned beef where it is cooked on the flattop with crispy edges, like a smash burger. Poached eggs were perfect and I appreciated the opportunity to salt and pepper the hash browns to taste. We polished it off our respective entrees and were kindly well hydrated with large iced waters throughout our meal. Happy to note that breakfast is served all day, which is a major plus for me. Straightforward, no frills diner food. Been living on this side of sound since 1983 and this was my first visit. West Seattle's all time # 1 greasy spoon breakfast joint. When Frank needs breakfast I head underneath the West Seattle Freeway to my favorite hidden hideaway. Nothing finer than this diners fresh coffee to start your morning off with. Now it's the kinda coffee that could peel the paint off your car it's so strong but a wake up cup for sure. My go to meal is the chicken fried steak over hash browns w/ country gravy smothering in. Sometimes I'll even through in a side order of crispy bacon. Granted this is a heart attack special yet so tasty. Did I mention this place is very consistent cause the meals never waivers in flavor... The crew @ Chelan Cafe have an amazing hard working group of ladies bringing a smile and my food. Appreciate them so much for starting my day off in a positive way. With all diners there's a low level of an abundance of rumbling noise but it's due to the exuberance of family & friends sharing a meal. I love the Chelan Cafe. Diner food revolves around breakfast and they serve breakfast all the time. Except for dinner. And do you know why? Because they aren't open for dinner. At all. Ever. The Chelan is a diner which takes itself entirely seriously as a diner. There's no irony to the vinyl stools at the mid century modern counter top. None of the historical Seattle and nautically themed decorations scream I AM NOSTALGIC at you, because you are already at a historical landmark. If there's a poster for the 1986 Seattle Eats then the reason it's up there is because they put it there *to promote the event at the time*. Okay, the food: always solid, right in the middle-of-the-lane diner food. Two stand outs for me, both of which are specials: The BBIT (Best Breakfast In Town) is a scramble of everything good you can get as a side: scrambled eggs tossed with string hash browns, bacon, ham, sausage, and maybe even some other versions of pig. Maybe there are peppers and onions in there too? If so they are seasoning. It's delicious. I get it (nearly) every time I'm there. Just about the only time I don't get the BBIT is when the Prime Rib dip sandwich is available. This is a thickly sliced prime rib sandwich made out of the full-rib-roast leftovers from the prime rib lunch the day before. It's a jaw-dislocating pile of oven roasted beef on a toasted French bun with a side of au jus. Get it with tater tots instead of fries and ask for extra au jus. It's a remarkable sandwich, actually. Entire culinary empires have been built around sandwiches like this one. Also: bottomless coffee and good service. Sit at the counter or one of the three counter booths if you can. read more

This is tough, since we have always enjoyed this West Seattle institution. We were seated almost immediately and got coffee soon after. Even refills. Our waitress, however, did not come to take our order until 25 minutes later, after taking the orders of the three tables around us that were seated after us. It then took another 35 minutes to get our food, and of course, after all the other tables. So at this point we are an hour or more into this. Our food, sadly, was warm, but certainly not hot. Not even close, but we were definitely not returning it at this point since we didn't even feel well after waiting so long. Once we finished, we sat longer, waiting for someone to come by to ask if we wanted anything else or ready to check out. Finally, our server came by and we had to ask for the bill. Once done with that and an 1 1/2 after arriving, we could finally get on with our Mother's celebration. Sad, but this had to be shared. Chelan Cafe: Home of the Floor Jam Let me set the scene: I'm at Chelan Cafe, excited for a classic breakfast--eggs, sausage, hash browns. The hash browns could've used another minute on the grill, but overall, the meal was fine. The coffee? Serviceable. Not writing poetry about it, but it did its job. Then came the jam. Oh, the jam. My waitress brought over a small container for my toast... and promptly dropped it on the floor. No big deal. Accidents happen. She smiled and said she'd get me a new one. How sweet, I thought. What customer service, I thought. WRONG. I watched her pick up the jam, place it on the counter, wander off, do a few other things, and then--like some sort of culinary sleight of hand--bring me the exact same floor jam. As if I wouldn't notice. As if this was some kind of secret test to see how badly I wanted toast. Now, let's pause. There's a sacred trust between a diner and their server: please don't serve me things that have touched the floor. This is not a complicated rule. I didn't think we needed to say it out loud. And yet, here we are. And THEN--oh yes, it gets better--she had the nerve to ask if I wanted to leave a tip. A tip?! Ma'am, I just had a near-death experience with a rogue packet of strawberry preserves. If Chelan Cafe is trying to launch a new "Five-Second Rule Menu," they should really tell people up front. Final thoughts: cook your hash browns longer, keep your condiments off the floor, and maybe don't lie to your customers' faces. Our family of three stopped by here today. After 40 minutes of no service, we decided to leave. The servers are walking around like chickens with their heads cut off. No rhyme or reason to their servicing. We were told 4 times that they'd be right back to get our order. Also another server said they'd bring us water, TWICE - never happened. Have always been a fan of the breakfast. Chelan is a great breakfast place. However the lunch is beyond disappointing. I got a French dip with fries, the fries were undercooked and soggy. The bread for the sandwich was also incredibly soggy but the meat was dry as can be. I got sat quickly but it took the waitress over 20 minutes to even get to my table. I came mid-day on a Friday. Then waited for almost an additional 40 minutes to get my damn food. Absolute shame that their lunch is so much worse than their breakfast. Won't be coming back for anything OTHER than breakfast. Been wanting to try this place for a while but it's always packed on the weekends. Got to go at a less busy time today (Friday 11am) and had a great experience. Cute inside and the service was quick and friendly. The food was delicious, quality and reasonably priced. Bacon was perfectly cooked, omelettes were amazing and coffee tasted fresh. Only thing I would have liked was to have a Splenda or sweetener option other than sugar at the table, but they may have had it. I just didn't bother to ask and opted to just drink it without sweetener and just cream. It was great coffee so it was just as well! Will be back. read more

I have lived in the West Seattle area for over 2 decades. I finally gave in and wanted to give this diner a try. It has the old fashioned diner ambiance that I like but unfortunately I won't be returning for two important reasons--mediocre food and horrible service. Came in on a Sunday for a party of two. Wasn't busy. There was a party of two before us and about 5 minutes after there was a party of 4. The party before us got seated fairly quickly and the manager was quick to clean up and set up for the party of 4 that came In after us. Realizing that we had been standing there waiting one of the waiters sat us in the corner at a table that had been long empty. Simple breakfast and lunch menu; which isn't a bad thing but one of my favorite things at a diner is corn beef hash. I had asked the waiter if it was in chunks or minced, he said he wasn't sure and had to ask. When a waitress came over to answer my question, her answer was as simple as the menu: it comes out of a can... that sure sounds appetizing doesn't it? I opted for the chef eddy hotcakes sandwich (two pancakes, 1 egg, two sausage links or two pieces of bacon. I got the two sausage links with a side of bacon). My other half got the chicken fried steak with sausage gravy. The chicken fried steak and gravy came out quickly. His biggest critique was that there wasn't much gravy. My overcooked slices of bacon and pancakes came out. I only was able to take a couple bites of the bacon because honestly it was hard to chew without risking chipping a tooth. The pancakes were your mediocre diner pancakes. A good 10 minutes went past as I nibbled on my pancakes before we realized the main part of my breakfast hadn't come out. My bf went up to the counter and informed our waitress that we were halfway done eating and I never got the rest of my food. She came out with an egg and more bacon. I told her that it should've been an egg with sausage. She went back and brought back the egg with two sausage links. Honestly, I can deal with a mediocre simple breakfast if the service is stellar but the combination of overcooked bacon and overlooked customers make this diner a no-go for me. read more

Have driven by the Chelan Cafe for years and have been curious. With over 1,000 ratings and a 3+ rating, I thought it was a safe bet where to meet a friend for breakfast. I was wrong. We were seated at a dirty table, the 'clean' coffee cups were upside down/ lip down on the dirty table and then used for us. The waitress apologized for the dirty table, wiped it down with a wet rag and left the dirty rag on the table until we asked for it to be taken. We both were served cold food. The food itself was mediocre at best and I am not a food snob. Easy Street Records is a much better breakfast, in a cooler space and is consistent if you are looking for breakfast in the area. read more

First the positives. GREAT FOOD, GREAT VALUE! PRICES ARE LOWER THAN PRETTY MUCH ANYBODY ELSE. The one major negative and it's a big one. There is a busser there, I believe her name is Beverly. She has been told multiple times that she needs to wear her hair behind in a ponytail. One of the servers told us that she's been refusing to do that. We were in today and she had two ponytails laying down in front. Her hair is very long very frizzy and it looked unkept and uncombed. When she brought us our water, she literally had the glasses up against her chest and her hair. When she put him down on the table my husband and I just looked at each other and said no we're not drinking those. (Thank you to the server who I quietly told and she was completely understanding and replaced the waters.) Granted, Sundays are very very busy and I get the things get low and sometimes it might take a little time to get what you want. When we asked for vanilla creamers instead of just politely saying "I will get them to you as soon as I can I'm sorry it's so busy I can't do it now."she said "No I can't" and just abruptly walked away. A little side note? We were sitting right outside with a store all those things so it wouldn't have taken her more than 30 seconds to grab a small handful and bring them to our table. O-M-G Seriously? The Chelan is a Seattle Icon where locals go to feel a part of something fun. The bar, located in the rear of the restaurant is a place I have visited before and always enjoyed myself. That is why I didn't hesitate to meet my friend there for a few drinks. I know the place has a 'dive' feel, but that doesn't give license for the bartender to be so rude. It was around 5pm on a Thursday night. We arrived there just before a shift change. The one lady bartender was nice and efficient. Her replacement was an incredibly incapable SNAGGLE TOOTH. My friend and I sitting at the bar went COMPLETELY ignored. So much so, I noticed people walking up to the bar were getting service, and we were not. So, I got off the bar stool and walked to where everyone else was getting drinks. She was SO RUDE and CRANKY it was ALMOST LAUGHABLE. She got into a yelling match with a co-worker who was playing video games. He must have said something negative to her and she lost her mind. It made everyone in the place stop their conversations and watch the spectacle. Honestly? I would never go back afraid she or someone like her would be working. Hey lady! No reason to be working as a bartender if you hate your job and the people in it. Everyone can have a bad day, but your customers should never be the ones to pay for it. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by the Chelan Cafe. It is a hidden gem nestled under the West Seattle Bridge. My husband and I came here for breakfast on a Monday morning and they weren't that busy. There was plenty of parking (they have two lots!) and once inside, we were seated right away. The building looks pretty plain on the outside, but the interior is really cool. It was large and bright on the inside with neat decorations on the walls. They have a wide selection of breakfast foods (omelettes, pancakes, french toast, etc). I ordered the Chelan Scramble, which came with hash browns and toast. Everything was delicious. It was a hearty portion, but I was able to eat most of it. The coffee was just ok. I thought everyone was pretty nice and our server did a great job. She took our order promptly and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time. The food was piping hot when it showed up at our table. Our server also made sure that we never ran out of coffee. We both really enjoyed the Chelan Cafe and we will definitely go back! read more

Bar is funny and karaoke Thursdays are entertaining. I come all the time for the awesome waitstaff, predictably good comfort food and the feeling of being treated like a regular. The food is good but not amazing and i prefer Luna Park for breakfast.
