Rated at 3.5-stars (not a full 4.0*) This restaurant is one shop in a string of shops on Greenwood Avenue. It's a little dark (window only on the street side), and it's seen better days. The staff seems friendly enough, but they are stretched thin, and it took a while for the server to take my order, then a while for the kitchen to actually produce it. The food was adequate, but nothing special: I had the Big Dipper breakfast & tea - in my case scrambled eggs, blueberry pancakes, hash browns, and a sausage patty. The hash browns were pretty standard, the scrambled eggs pretty standard, the sausage patty huge and greasy, and the two blueberry pancakes huge and very thick (a little heavy). It was a lot of food, more than I wanted to eat. They had a good variety of teas, but not the one I wanted (Earl Grey) so I settled for English Breakfast. There was nothing wrong with breakfast or the restaurant, but not much to get excited about either. I probably won't go back, but if I do, I'd expect the food to be adequate but not worth a special trip. IMO best dinner in seattle. Been to many seeking what North Star does. Food is five star, had chilaquiles, Benedict, Rachel, and Caesar salad. Ambiance is great! Had a killer eclectic playlist going with Mazzy Star and deftones, dragon ball z on the tv and the decorations from a retired Chinese restaurant. I know my egg preparation request is a little bit non-standard --eggs, fried hard with a broken yolk, so there's no runniness-- I always appreciate when someone comes out from the kitchen to clarify what I want regarding my eggs, and they did just that and the eggs were perfect. I enjoyed my vegetable hash and drip coffee as well. My friend who dined with me says the French toast is amazing. The TV's over the bar were a little distracting for me, at least the sound was turned down. Although the restaurant was less than half full, it was surprisingly loud with conversation. The coffee is served in large soup mugs and we never needed a refill. I would come back here because the food was hot and delicious and it came out quickly, the wait wasn't long and there's seating at the counter, and staff are friendly. We may have waited a few extra minutes, so we could sit in Tory's section. One thing to keep in mind is it gets pretty noisy in there and can be hard to have a conversation. Sadly, North Star is no longer a 24 hour joint. I miss enjoying boozy milkshake and a grilled cheese with fries at 1 am after a show. But, who am I kidding? When the server came to the table with the BIGGEST coffee mug I've ever seen, I was instantly a fan of North Star. The thing looks like a mini crock pot. Free refills too! All of the food our group of 3 got was good, a step above old school greasy diner food, but not Instagram influencer fancy - the perfect happy medium. Both of our meals hit the spot (him country fried steak, myself a BLT and sweet potato fries). Only concern was we both ordered the same Bloody Mary, nothing changed. However when they came out, I was able to finish mine fairly quickly with my food. I noticed my boyfriend barely touched his; it was over twice as strong and also had whole peppercorns which weren't in mine, and completely different garnishes. I love to eat mine (pickled girls unite) but there were just onions. I'd come back if we were hungry and nothing else was open, still better than your typical chain diner. read more

The huevos rancheros are a personal favorite -- spicy and delicious! The couple times I've come in for breakfast have been around 10:30-11:30am on a Saturday, and both times we were seated right away at the counter while larger groups waited for tables. Got this place for delivery and it was amazing! Their fried breakfast burrito was filled with loaded potatoes, beans, hashbrown, carnitas, and eggs. On the side, they provide you with sour cream, cheese, and red sauce so that the burrito doesn't get soggy. It was a hefty burrito and definitely had leftovers. We both got the biscuits and gravy, but he got the chicken version with meat gravy and I got the vegetarian mushroom option. My partner felt the biscuits were too hard and were bland, and he was disappointed that it was chicken tenders instead of fried chicken. I felt mine were ok and liked my gravy. The service was good, with our server checking in regularly and getting me a new water glass when mine had some marks on it. The Shanghai was by the bathroom which is like a whole new section. They do have patio as well. They serve all day menu which is awesome. But that day I was jus sticking to the breakfast menu. I got the Chicken biscuit with their chorizo gravy on the side. I usually prefer gravy on the side and add them myself. Just in case the gravy tastes south... this place their chorizo gravy was delicious. I could ask for second. My friend got their burrito chimichanga. This is more like 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up. I've been here twice, once in North Star Diner, and the other in Shanghai room. North Star Diner is the daytime side of the restaurant. Bright and spacious, with delicious brunch options. I got: "Chicken N Biscuit"- chicken tender with biscuits and gravy. Delicious. Bloody Mary- got the classic version, but it was still kinda spicy. Didn't come with veggies mentioned on menu. My partner got the pancake combo with carnitas (wonderful pancakes, but meh on the meat), and a Paloma (it was ok). There were some discrepancies with the menu descriptions and pricing and what we actually received/ got charged, but the waiter was good with answering questions and fixing the price. Shanghai Room is the afternoon/nighttime side. It starts with Happy Hour from 3-6pm, and sometimes they have events much later at night like live music and karaoke. It's very dark inside, but full of string lights and decorative charm. Too dark for me, but I can see why people who like that atmosphere would enjoy it. I came simply for the Happy Hour. The alcoholic frozen lemonade- delicious, strong, and plentiful. "Drive-thru burger"- this surprisingly came with fries and was served in a bag (creative touch). It was an ok burger, but because it was $6 and came with fries, that made it better. My partner got the same but with a PBR. However, again, pricing on an item didn't match the online menu they provide, and I had to let the waiter know. He was the same waiter from the other time, and he responded to our inquiries and issues in a friendly, understanding, and respectful manner both times. I think there's room for improvement, but I can see the pull to come here. Just make sure you pay attention to the price you are being charged. I love this iconic brunch spot. With one other dining companion, we split the order of their standard breakfast plate (big dipper) and chicken fried steak + eggs. They also have an option of a pitcher of mimosa which is not offered at many places around town and fun if you're having some funday Sunday brunch with friends. I definitely do not recommend this place for lunch. I went here with a friend because he works in the neighborhood and I was in the area. I remember going to karaoke here a few years ago so we took a shot in the dark at the diner next door. The poor server seemed to be the only person working in the whole restaurant. She was nice, but clearly overworked. The first booth we sat at had a broken seat, like the coils busted through and the cushions were deflated. We moved to another booth which also had the same problem. The aesthetic was weird: kinda 50's diner meets old-school Chinese restaurant with anime and The Addams Family on the TVs. And then a wall of astronauts, because North Star (I guess?) I asked about their beers and the server said she needs to check if they're still cleaning the tap lines. Then she left with no mention of the taps after that. I figured "fine, no lunch beer". All of that I can look past -- the food is why I took my time and energy to write this review. I ordered the Fish'wich fish sandwich. It literally looked like a sandwich you'd get in elementary school on a styrofoam tray. The fish part was the tiniest fish stick I've ever seen that didn't cover 50% of the generic hamburger bun they use. The one slice of American cheese was folded in half and wasn't even melted. And to top it all off, they added a small dollop of tartar sauce leaving most of the bun sad and dry. There was no coleslaw "piled high" like the menu stated. I felt like I was being pranked or in one of those psychology experiments that test how much s*%t you will put up with before speaking up. It's not in my mettle to complain and send a dish back. So I ate the saddest $14 fish sandwich I have ever seen. I will not be coming back. And I would stray away from this place and the Fish'wich. read more
